What do you think about this routine or the principles behind it, courtesy of BigA from promuscle:
TRAINING
Why does a muscle grow? Because it has to adapt. When
does it have to adapt? When you expose it to something
that it has not done before. When is something that it
has not done before? When the muscle is taxed 100%.
That's 100% effort. What's 100% effort? When you train
to 100% PHYSICAL, not mental failure. So, to make the
muscle grow, you have to train with 100% effort
otherwise, the muscle will not adapt/grow.
Now, using the above logic, for a set to be beneficial
to your growth, it needs to be 100% effort. So, a 100%
effort set of an exercise, will make you grow. Then,
what is the point to do a second set of that exercise?
You cannot go more than 100%. The muscle already has
been taxed by 100% from the first set, so why should
you do a second one? You will just eat into your
recovery ability.
So, you should only do one set to failure per
exercise. Later on, I will describe the training
program and how exercises and warm-ups are involved.
A muscle will not grow until it's recovered. The
muscle will not begin to recover until the nervous
system is recovered. It takes roughly 24hours for the
nervous system to recover from a workout. Only then
will the muscle begin to recover and grow. So, you
should never train 2 days in a row. Even if you train
different bodyparts, you still use the same nervous
system. You train 2 days in a row, your nervous system
recovers, but by the time the muscles begin to, you
train again, so the body has to concentrate again on
recovering the nervous system.
A training frequency of 3 days per week (Mon, Wed,
Fri) is more than enough. Numerous pros, including
myself, train like this offseason for maximum growth.
Even if you use streroids, you still have to train
like this. Steroids increase your recovery ability,
but they also make you stronger at a quicker rate. The
extra strength will give you the ability to train
harder/tear more muscle tissue, so you will need the
extra recovery that the steroids will give you.
The following is a great training program that I
recomend:
Mon - Chest, Shoulders, Triceps
* Incline press - warm-up sets, 1 work set
* Flat flyes - 1 work set
* Millitary press - 1 warm-up, 1 work set
* Lateral flyes - 1 work set
* Rear delt machine - 1 work set
* Tricep pushdowns - 1 warm-up, 1 work set
* Lying tricep extensions - 1 work-set
Wed - Quads, Hams, Calves
* Squats - warm-ups, 1 work set
* Leg press - work set
* Leg extension - work set
* Leg curl - warm-up, work set
* Stiff leg deadlift - work set
* Standing calf raise - work set
Fri - Abs, Back, Bis
* Rope crunches - warm up, work set
* Lat pull down - warm-ups, work set
* Deadlift - warm-up, work set
* Bent-over rows - work set
* Shrugs - work set
* Standing BB curls - warm up, work set
* Concentration curl - work set
You do a lot of warm-ups for your first exercise of
the day. You do one warm-up for the first exercise of
each bodypart, only to optimise the firing of te
neuropathways.
Let's use chest as an example - if for example your
max (work set) in the incline press is 3 plates, then
you do 2 warm-ups with the bar, 2 warm-ups with one
plate, 1 warm-up with 2 plates and then your work set
with 3 plates. The work set is a set where you fail at
about 6 reps. Every workout, you have to do more reps
or increase the weight in that work set (remember, the
muscle has to do something that it has not done
before). So if one work out you fail with 6 reps, the
following nothing less than 7. When you reach 8 reps,
the following workout you should do (increase) a
weight where you can do minimum 4 reps. Then increase
your reps again every workout until you reach 8 again,
and so on. Each rep has a tempo of 2-1-1. That is 2
seconds in the negative, one second in the contraction
and 1 second in the positive.
Then, after you fail in the incline press, you move
straight to flat flyes. You do not need a warmp now
because your chest is more than warm after you failed
on presses.
And that's it for chest. The basic routine stays the
same. If you want variety, small changes as using DB's
instead of BB or doing flat presse and incline flyes
for example, is mor ethan enough variety to keep the
muscle 'confused'.

Mentzeresque!
-
your CNS doesnt have to recover before muscle growth can occur.
-
Any routine that has you contantly increasing the poundages is VERY dangerous.
Stimulate, Don't annihilate
-
"It takes roughly 24hours for the
nervous system to recover from a workout."
So it doesn't matter if I do one warmup set on squats or 30 sets to failure?
-
His workout is pretty much on the money IMO. That's almost exactly what i do just different exercises and i do chest+arms and Back+Shoulders.
After you get to a certain strength and have been training for years the body needs very little to break the muscle down.
-
sounds like pure DC principles to me. whicj imo is the right way to train
-
that's pretty much how i train
-
I pretty much agree in principle to this theory but.... Isn't there also a factor sometimes known as "inroads"? How much you work the muscle? Sometimes it's referred to as how "deep" you work the muscles. I know these are very elastic and ambiguous terms but I can't help but think there's something more. If 100% intensity of effort in one set is all that is needed why wouldn't, after a proper warm up, a one rep max work? Taking a weight that only, with the maximum gut busting effort, you can only barely manage to perform one rep. And just to be sure say you do another forced rep where a partner helps you achieve that second rep but only after maximum effort. Say that rep is so hard that you can barely move the weight and may take 10-15 seconds just to complete that one rep. Would that be enough? Those 2 reps? The muscle has been worked at 100% intensity and even beyond but would you have dug "deep enough" to stimulate an adaptive response?
-
too logn to read ,,,someone ask in short sentences ,,make it short ,,you have here geniouses that can make it all short
-
there's a contradiction though; first he says only 1 set to failure is needed, but the workout includes 5 sets to failure of different exercises that train the same muscle. For example both leg press and squats for quads.

agreed, the poster is just insane with all the thought he puts into training lol

Lot's of spinach
Popeye wasn't just a myth
You're gonna need at least 1kg (2.2lb) Per day
"of all the chemicals contained in spinach, phytoecdysteroids (a type of plant steroids) do spur muscle growth by increasing the body's conversion of protein into muscle mass. However, don't rush to the market just yet: these effect could be felt only if humans were to consume over 2.2lb (one kilogram) of spinach daily."
"Phytoecdysteroids placed on samples of human muscle increased their growth by up to 20%. Rats that had received shots of phytoecdysteroids for an entire month were also more powerful and had increased grip strength."
-
I love spinach but i 'only' eat 200g per day
-
One can of spinach is like roto rooter to the bowels.
Imagine 2lbs....
-
One can of spinach is like roto rooter to the bowels.
Imagine 2lbs....
Ideally you should be having 6 bowel movements per day
This is achieveable with 2lb's of spinach
This will ensure your complexion is almost flawless as there will be almost no toxic buildup in the colon.

I hear this frequently. How do you know it takes "roughly 24 hours" for the CNS to recover? Has there been any studies that the CNS has to be fully recovered FIRST before a muscle can grow? If your CNS is fully recovered, your training intensity is 100%, nutrition and rest is optimum, does that mean your muscles will grow after every workout session? That obvious doesn't happen. Why not?
-
is it true free weights build muscle better than cables and machines??
-
no ,,any resistance training will build muscle as long as you work that muscle,, great champs of regional shos and in europe were build on bow flexes tyep of machine to begin with

There are several posters on this forum that I find particularly interesting and/or worth reading: VanB, Hank Wood (very ambivalent about him but interesting), TA ( though I don't like him) and gh15 whom I find by far the most compelling. He gives us information and a perspective we would never get anywhere else. So what? Who are you and why do you care? How do you know I cling to every word gh15 says unless you are on the same thread following me? If you don't like him fine but why do you care if others read him? Why do you care about what anybody does unless it directly effects you?
Don't pay attention or follow me. I'm not that fascinating. I certainly don't know who you are and there is nothing about you that has pique my interest and nothing about you that stands out. You're just part of the chatter here. Nothing wrong with that. I'm in that same group. If you want to argue or debate a point or belief that I've made then you can address me. But why pick a fight or insult me in a way you would never do to my face or to anybody elses face? I've never said anything or even noticed you before.

Most of the top BBs over the last 50 years have gotten best results hitting each muscle twice weekly. This crap about having to baby the CNS is just another theory that happens to be in vogue, there's nothing conclusive about needing rests that long nor did the top guys do so. Main thing is resting a muscle that's been worked 2-3 days then go to it again.

Yes, my living standards has taken quite a dive since getting laid off from my aerospace job almost two years ago. A company I was with for 17 years. I join the ranks of millions of Americans who lost everything. My sister also worked for a company for 25 years and when it went belly up so did her 401k and retirement. What's your point?
I assume, since you feel you can look down on others less fortunate or financially successful as yourself, that you are doing well. Maybe very well. Good for you. But don't ever take for granted your good fortune and being born in a country that has afforded you opportunities you would not have gotten if you were born in many, if not most, places in the world. A privilege you did nothing to earn or deserve. You just got lucky, as I have, being born in a tittering but still great country.
Though my life style is modest it's still light years ahead of what most people in this world have to endure. And don't ever forget that and I don't complain. I work three jobs, seven days a week, all bills are paid, and I never go hungry -- something (hunger) that is routine for most in this world. And I've been through tougher times and had to live out of my car while still only 18 years old until I was able to get on my feet and put myself through school. And never was I on the public dole or on welfare taking hand outs. I don't exactly come from a good family and never had the support of say, Wiggs, who was able to move back in with his family while he was unemployed. Nothing wrong with that. That what family is for. I am pleased that now he has recently found a decent paying position and is able to afford gear and weight loss products and can eat better and get on his weight loss program. Perhaps you as well have a safety net should the rug be pulled out from under you. Be grateful for your good fortune.
But don't ever take from granted that what you see around you will always be there. Don't think that this country, and the relatively free and open culture, as well as our staggering prosperity -- that was paid for in blood and treasure by previous generations -- will always be here. Don't think that just because your savior, Obama, says to print a trillion dollars that suddenly we will be a trillion dollars richer. Don't think that just because he's going to decided what kind of cars the auto makers should produce and demand standards that increase their cost that they are just going to take it and not move to another country to run their business. Don't think that not calling a war a "war" or a terrorist a "terrorist" will mean that it will just go away.
Be grateful my angry and bitter internet warrior. The future of this country does not look bright and there's no guarantee it will always be here. No culture, no matter how rich and powerful, has lasted forever. And if things ever get hand to mouth you may find that your cushy life has made you soft and you will be no match for the scrappy survivors who accept setbacks, hardships, obstacles and pain as just a normal part of life.
I've briefly gone through some of your previous posts since you have now called attention to yourself. You do not seem to be a person of much substance and character. Therefore, taking my cue from gh15, who whether you agree with him or not, does add something to this board and has a lot more people "clinging to his every word" than they do to you (which may explain some of your animus towards him and people that listen to him) I will dismiss you.
