Yeah, we all seem to fall back on the foreign language most familiar to us. Did you know there is no verb in French for 'to stand'. Kind of weird.

We can say " se tenir" for to stand.

We can say " se tenir" for to stand.

It's not really the same thing such as 'standing in line' but I am not a native speaker so...still no real verb for 'stand'.

Yep. french is an hard language to leran.

That depends. I think compared to many others it is not. But would you ever use the expression 'se tenir' to say something like:

I stood in line for 3 hours=Je me suis tenu a la queue pendant 2 heures? I don't think so, but correct me if I am wrong.

There are similar things in japanese.

座る means the act "to sit down", when you are sitting on a chair you have to use a form like "sitting" 座っている

Yes, we ll say. " Je me suis tenu dans la file d'attente pendant 3 heures = I stood in line for 3 hours. Line = File d'attente

You can say "queue" but it's not that good, cuz queue can mean dick in slang.

Yes, but that is a result of culture and habit, not one based on rational argument, neither the Japanese nor the Chinese have ever produced convincing rational arguments why Kanji are NECESSARY. The fact is, they are not. If someone wants to argue that they are pretty and culturally important, that's fine but arguments such as: it's saves space or there are some homophones are not valid or convincing.

1500 at my age...unlikely but possible. Well, I have applied to a few jobs in China (only because they pay well) so I will be forced to learn some if I end up there. :-\

No. Especially in China, you can make that very quick. Only one reading per Kanji, that's not a big problem.

I suppose but it's funny. I know this guy who is fluent in spoken Mandarin but is essentially illiterate, so whilst he can talk about say economic problems in Chinese, he can barely write half of what he can talk about.

His spoken Mandarin is as good as a foreigner can speak it. As for writing...if Chinese had an alphabet, none of this would be a problem. Even though my Korean sucks even now when I hear it, I can write it down instantly.

Can you write complex essays about complex topics in Japanese without having to always look up Kanji?

Pinyin.

It works perfectly fine with diacritic marks to distinguish tones, in fact when foreigners start with Chinese THAT is how they learn it. No reason they couldn't just get rid of the Kanji and just use pinyin, other than cultural reasons.

BS, pinyin is not effective and takes to much time for reading.

Kanji are perfect, just accept that.

They used to argue this for Korean too...do Koreans need too time to read? You are in denial. There is NO LOGICAL reason for them; purely cultural. Anything else is just a rationalisation.

Last post on this topic:

I have an MA in japanese. I have learned it, i have read many many many texts and texts written in romaji are not understandable. Even if you have to look up some Kanji the texts are easier to read.
