From the LA Times:
Reporting from Sacramento -- With deficit forecasts growing darker by the day, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is considering a plan to slash California's safety net for the poor by eliminating the state's main welfare program, health insurance for low-income families and cash grants to college students.
Of course California is known for having "sanctuary cities", $200,000 pensions for firefighters and in general providing largess to everyone - even those who aren't citizens.
This is a problem, of course, but it didn't bother all the bleeding hearts so long as all the high-flying people out there were flipping houses and running up their credit cards.
Now, of course, the credit card is dead and the home is being foreclosed on, much like the rest of the nation as a whole - but of course the Federal Government can run deficits so long as it can con China - California can't.
Its time to set an example here folks:
No more "freebies" for illegals. Period. No free medical care, no free schools, not even jailing people - you get caught here illegally you get sent home. Period, end of discussion, full-stop. Start right now and enforce the damn law; a HUGE percentage of California's prison population are in fact illegal aliens. We pay twice - first for the crime, then again to jail them. Stop being stupid.
Stop paying civil service jobs (firefighters, teachers, etc) $100,000+, more than twice the per-capita income.
Fix the pension system so it can't be gamed and double-dipped to the tune of $200,000+ for that same firefighter when they retire.
Stop subsidizing people who want to have 8 embryos IVF'd into their uterus when they can't personally cover the cost of BIRTHING those eight new mouths, never mind attempting to raise them.
If you're "poor" and need help, make receiving that help conditioned on working. If nothing else I bet there's a bunch of trash alongside roads that needs to be picked up. If you're able-bodied, no help without working in exchange - for the general benefit of society. Period.
What's happening here is entirely predictable and in fact has been predicted. You can't spend more than you make for very long; eventually your credit card comes back "declined."
California is first in this regard but won't be the last.
Wake up America.
And in the meantime (and as a hedge if the government tries to be even more stupid) go buy a gun and some ammo. When the "entitlement" checks stop going to those who think they have a right to pop out eight kids and bill the state for the medical, I'll make book on riots and other forms of general civil nastiness.

What is worng with asking people of sound mind and able body to do some type of work for government assistance?

What is worng with asking people of sound mind and able body to do some type of work for government assistance?
Because the assistance will never be a fair exchange for the work provided. If it was, it would be called a job.
This newly created workforce category... the "assisted worker" program will expand, with private industry bidding on worker contracts... People will be stuck in a vicious catch-22 unable to leave, and a new class of indentured and perpetual servitude will have begun. They'll sell it to the stupid & spiteful, as a way of combatting the illegal aliens. "Instead of them coming to OUR country to steal our jobs, ...we'll have OUR people taking those jobs back!" Of course people will turn a blind eye when they realize they have to continue being paid 50 cents a day... no one wants the cost of their produce to raise, ...so people will be forced to pick produce, pick up litter along highways, ...work in Walmart or any other corporate behemoth who buys or rents the worker from the government, 12 - 14 hrs a day on an endless treadmill unable to progress forward. Pretty soon, the middle class is wiped out because no company is going to want to hire an employee and pay them a decent wage, when they can get a dirt-cheap 'assisted worker'. They will have solved the challenge of outsourcing, ...through assisted workers. By the time people figure it out, ...they're checking out the new nifty assisted worker number that's just been tattooed to their arms or foreheads. (Much easier to track the slave assisted worker that way... ya know, ...if any of them escapes gets lost while out in the fields picking cotton corn for all that bio-diesel.) :-\

Fine, lets eliminate welfare anyway for all but the most physically incapable. .

screw em. Let them work the fields or join the military.

Not quite. Look at it as a form of education...learning how to actually work for money. ALL aid should be cut off to illegals. Cities and counties should send the illegal criminals to federal jurisdiction immediately to be deported and parents should have to show birth certificates and SS cards to enroll kids in school for the first time in school district, otherwise no school.

Overspending on education and illegals has put the state in the hole big time. Illegals alone cost the state 8 or so billion dollars. Arizona hospitals would lose millions a week in emergency room care because of illegals. It has to stop.
-

Yes, it is inhumane to expect a welfare leech to actually work for ANYTHING.
All they would have to do to not be a 'slave' is go get a job like the rest of us.
-
I say we get rid of all the defined benefit pensions for public workers (including police and firefighters). It's archaic to pay someone 80-95% of their salary for the rest of their life. They could also do pay cuts for public workers. We've got cops and fire-fighters make 120k to 150k+ here in the bay area. That's f'ng crazy.
-

Hey , welcome to the real world. 80%+ of the work force will never get a fair exchange for the work provided. :P

Except you're framing this as an illegal alien issue. The vast majority of welfare recipients are legal citizens.

That's why I find emploment so disgustingly unrewarding in comparison to network marketing. :P
The difference between standard employee / employer relations and work for welfare, is that at least in the former, one often has the ability to improve their lot whereas in a work for welfare arrangement, the individual will be perpetually stuck in the system. I don't disagree with you though. Employers buy you wholesale and sell you retail. In a work for welfare situation, the government sells you at cost, and corporate profits soar. :-\

They collect tons on medical care and they do receive federal aid for themselves and their kids. Many of the legal residents NEVER try to work and just collect welfare, and then their kids collect it, and then their kids collect it, etc. Teach people the value of work and start cutting off aid, you will see a change...and if they don't want to work, but are able, then you cut them off. This "slave" argument is nothing more than excuse to justify people not working to EARN their money.

I live in NYC, we invented panhandlers.
Seriously though, not everyone can be a chief, we need indians too.
Your typical welfare case is not going to be a driven networker selling services goods and produicts. Maybe eventually. but they need to start somewhere.
cleaning the trash along the road, helping seniors, the dog pound, whatever, seems to me like a good start.

1. Not the best analogy. Are you forgetting what the US government did to the Indians? :-X
2. Maybe you should spend 12 hours a day volunteering to show them how it's done... how good they'll have it. :P

Nonsense. I am self employed and dont need to learn skills to be productive. Welfare cases by definition need to learn good work habits and skills to be productive.
-

Well, the option to work has been there for these people and they choose to leach off the system. They don't want to work, plain and simple. If they don't want to work for themselves, then they should least perform a service for the money they get.
-

:o What world are you living in? The self employed more so than anyone need to learn skills to be productive.
Or maybe you're substituting productive for employable. Even so, what welfare recipients need, isn't good work habits, they need jobs that pay them a decent wage, something that's going to make them want to bounce out of bed in the morning eager to go to work. Infact, ...that's what EVERYBODY needs. Something they can get passionate about.

You don't know how hard that is to do. Shit, I'm a teacher and we have kids from the city pour into our suburban school district and live with their"aunties and uncles", leach off of stuff that they didn't have to pay taxes for and fuck our schools up and fuck otherwise good kids up with violence and gangs activity. And we can't tell them no because they can stuff 50 kids in a house and as long as they claim it as legal residence we can't do anything. Mayor Daley of Chicago should be drawn and quartered for what he has done to the state, county and collar counties, bull dozed the ghetto project housing and gave gave them housing vouchers and pushed them into section 8 housing in our area.
Now if it is almost impossible to do to legal citizens, how hard will it be to do to illegal citizens who will claim discrimination, racism and get La Raza and all the cooks to shout down logic and reason?
-

I understand it's hard but just do it. It might sound callous but if you can't keep track of your birth certificate or go get a SS from the SS administration then you don't belong in school. Just tell people bluntly, if you don't have these documents and cannot prove you live in the district then you can't attend class.

I couldn't say for certain on the breakdown by ethnicity but I had an interesting chat with a Korean man about how "his people", as he put it, come over with millions, claim they are broke and get free health care and welfare while running cash businesses. Apparently he said they get away with it because they live in meager homes or have a bunch of people living in one house. Basically they keep up appearances really well. They aren't like other welfare cheats that are rollin in Escalades or 350Zs with 20 inch rims.

I mean unless you are crippled and cannot work there is no excuse for not trying to work or working a mediocre job until you get something better. Shit, the Marines are looking for a few good men and they pay.

People need routine in their lives, which makes for productive work and employment. Sitting home and collecting a check and running down to the liquor store does not make for good work traits.
Additiionally, work makes people have a sense of worth and dignity. Sitting home watching springer and My9 is a recipe for perpetual welfare.

Am in total agreement with you here, however the way welfare is structured with it's clawbacks for earned income, it's more of a disincentive to seek gainful employment. Under a work for welfare system, it would be even worse. At least a pt job that pays a few bucks an hour would allow someone the free time to seek an employment upgrade. A work for welfare system keeps the person forever trapped in the system without the possibility of escape.
-

I don't love my job right now but it is a job and I can collect my check knowing I earned every cent; I can say that much for myself.
I was so proud when I got my first paycheck as a 16 year old boy and have learned the value of hard work.
Jag, you bring up a valid point but unfortunately the current system does the same thing.

...as would be work for welfare.
The problem is that all the social welfare programs, coupled together, amount to more than most people can make in entry level jobs. Its a big problem, but you cant force small companies to pay people with little or no skills high wages just because welfare pays so much.
These people should be given the choice of cleaning trash on the highway, taking care of seniors, getting a job, or getting nothing at all. If they dont like it, they dont eat.
-

{lol} Oh they'll eat all right. Don't get it twisted. And they'll rob, steal, pillage & plunder to do it.
Mainstream society often forgets many social welfare programs exist primarily for their benefit,
not so much the impoverished. Believe me, ...you don't want to live in a society without a strong social safety net.

You know, I actually thought about the other day, but it felt really shitty to think that we give people welfare just to placate them from committing crimes. Its a sad testement to the society if that is the case that we have to bribe people in that way to get them to not rob and pillage.

So the solution is to bring effective 'reform' to the system, not abolish it or make it worse.
A great man recently said something to the effect of "You don't use a hatchet where a scalpel is required."

Yes, but until then I want people to work for their money.

simple solution for a decent chunk of budget problems
no more defined benefit pensions for any federal, state, city worker
they are archaic and unsustainable
