I just got this job a week ago. I bust my ass for shitty pay but I leave work with my shirt soaked in sweat every day and feeling great. This job plus weight lifting is the ultimate in physical conditioning. Love it, fucking love it.
-
is it still 8.50 an hour?

that is a good honest job....and, you don't have to worry about your nipple getting bit off
-
I did that when I was in college for a month getting paid 8.50/hr and I wanted to shoot myself in the head. I'd rather pick cotton.
-
no way its only 8.50 an hour?

i did it from second half of senior year in high school to the day before i left for college.
that summer, me and a buddy double shifted. so we did 1 shift til 10 pm, then came back from 2 to 7 am. it was overtime from 2 to 7.
went from 210 to 175 lbs that summer.

I did a similar job for one year and it fockin sucked after two weeks ;D
-
Yeah guys its bullshit for the first 3 months they pay 8.50...then they move you up to 9.50, then 10 when you near the year mark...the job has awesome benefits but they don't even kick in until a year. The positive news is you have a secure job, its good honest work, they have some pretty sweet part-time advancements into management which can kick in before a year is up if you're a good worker, and they assist in tuition (up to 4,000 a year).

do they still give you the Terminator style scanner to put on your forearm and finger?

It would take around 8300 hours of loading those trucks to buy one of those prestigious SUVs for your wife. ;D :-\

They only do 4 hours a day, 5 days a week where I work. They don't give any OT. 4 hours is a perfect amount of time IMO. Anything more would be overkill.

HA, I am just waiting for this job to get the best of me. Hopefully I can handle it.

true dat.
it was "honest work" though as the guy said, and when you're 17, the money's great. right now, it'd be a little hard to get by on 8.50 an hour.
-

The one I use has the scanner on your finger and a mini computer that you stick in your pocket. I'm glad I don't have something big and clunky stuck on my forearm. I've seen those, they look annoying to work with.

I started out as a loader and then went to unload and Slide. I loved the Slide. Great to train and then head into there and the fuckin Humidity in South Carolina after working in those trailers and on the slide.....I use to drive home in my Undies....Not kidding ;D I use to go through Subway and get a footlong after work every night

I love my post-work meal. Nothing better. Subway sounds like a good idea, I have one near the warehouse I just may start going there afterwards.
I've been hitting the gym before work as well. It's been working out fairly well. But tomorrow is the real test...LEG DAY before work. Fucking squats are going to kill me. We'll see how it goes.
-
I wouldn`t do that kind of work even if you paid me.

Ya, you should just stick to your TANF check...

I've always strayed away from manual labor, being more enticed by jobs that typically focused on mental strengths and intelligence in order to be performed efficiently. But there's some real value in going to work and busting your ass. It's making for a great part-time job while I work my way through school.

That is what i did for three years. That was one of the best experiences that i have ever did besides being a Coal Miner and that is tough as shit! The money was only like $225 a week and my union dues but i miss working at UPS and Working out before you came in. I loved lifting the E-regs for fun!!

Ask to get put on the slide. You will have "MONSTER" size delts!! Stay away from working the smalls. You are new there but try to get to one of the tower spots.
-
I've worked for UPS for 2 years.. Started as a Loader now I am driving.. The pay goes WAY UP! Loading is a good workout, but is trted getting all kinds of old man pains in my elbows and shoulders that affected my workouts.. Great company! i'll never leave :)
-
I wouldn`t do that kind of work even if you paid me.
never would of thought that since your built like a sherman tank
you just seem genetically cut out for manual labor ::) ::) ::)

been there/done that....get ready for ALL of your strength lifts to decrease...you'll prob drop 10-15 lbs too...don't know your current stats, might be a good thing
-
I worked at a similar style job for awhile. It does get you in pretty good shape. I actually miss those manual labor jobs...job burnout does that to you.
-
Fedex same thing, and it's $10/hr in some places. Demanding job, if you like it it's great conditioning for sure.

Oh I could handle it easily, its just a waste of time and not beneficial at all mentally. They don`t care about you and you do not matter. Why would you want to succumb to such an environment? Are the trinkets that can be bought with the 8.50 an hour REALLY worth your time.
-

The piehole on your face....Shut it. I would destroy you in the gym and in the next Mr. Getbig, 112 times if I were to live another 112 years.

worked as an unloader my first year of college from 3-7 am. actually started the monday after thanksgiving, brutal

OK tough guy..what's with the "would" scenario...how about backing this up in GB IV? Or, maybe you'll just use the "don't have the time" excuse again :P

I don't know if I could make a lifetime career out of a job like this...I would much rather prefer something more "scholarly" if you will. But, while I'm going to school it's awesome. Also, it gets pretty intense as an endless stream of boxes swiftly engulf you no matter how fast you're going. It can be a mental challenge, not letting the boxes beat you and remaining resilient.
been there/done that....get ready for ALL of your strength lifts to decrease...you'll prob drop 10-15 lbs too...don't know your current stats, might be a good thing
Any diet advice to minimize the deterioration of my strength?

Glad to hear it! It seems like they take pretty good care of their employees...they keep their eyes open for hard workers and look to move them up in the company.

If there is an "Aquilles" or another like that, I am not interested. I suggest you boycott it as well if this is the case. I think you and I and others should put together our own contest.

I have known a couple fellows who did this job. Not a bad part-time job for a young person (beats flipping hamburgers) as long as the young man has realistic expectations.

Hmm. Maybe, there should be a DL minimum for entry for such a contest. Say, 225x112?

UPS ain't going bankrupt anytime soon either.
You are talking about 100's of different shipments on each trailer, they make a TON of cash with each truck sent out.

The contest should be for LIFETIME Naturals, no steroids or Pro-Hormone usage ever.

you must better define this cause you'll have all the gh/slin junkies crashin your party
A steroid is a terpenoid lipid characterized by a carbon skeleton with four fused rings, generally arranged in a 6-6-6-5 fashion. Steroids vary by the functional groups attached to these rings and the oxidation state of the rings. Hundreds of distinct steroids are found in plants, animals, and fungi. All steroids are made in cells either from the sterol lanosterol (animals and fungi) or from the sterol cycloartenol (plants). Both sterols are derived from the cyclization of the triterpene squalene.

It is too difficult to really set rules especially over the internet, which is why I think competition should be limited to people of some notoriety that have been around this place.

Very true. I guess it also beats mopping up the floor at the local wacky jack after a nights worth of sticky studs have ejected their semen all over the floor.

the thing is that somebody HAS to do the shit work... so its sort of odd to rag on the people who are doing it... be thankful its not you

Or working at UHC...I used to beg my coworkers, "Don't tell my mother I work at UHC. I've been telling her I play the piano at a whorehouse."

You do not know anything about UPS. I was concerned about everyone of my guys that worked the slide and Loaded, unloaded and worked the smalls. I asked each and every Man/Woman how they were feeling and if they had any pain in any place, then just let me or another supervisor know and they were seen by a Dr. and generally put on light duty. You have never ever been into a UPS facility and have no clue as to what goes down in meetings and how the Safety Team works.

I`ve heard that UHC`s corporate offices are being moved to Buchenwald and that the Guantanamo detainees are going to be sent to train as RREs in lieu of the prison closing.

Within a week they'll beg to go back to being waterboarded. Far more dignity in that.

Did you have the common courtesy to give them a reach around as you fantasized about dousing your co-worker`s brown shorts in epic cum stains or did you just build up as much pre-cum as possible and then unload it bathroom floor between shift changes?

You bring up how playing Football is gay and now this.... ::)

They're still going strong indeed. DHL and FedEx are hurting, UPS is doing great. I'm thankful to have a solid job at a young age.the thing is that somebody HAS to do the shit work... so its sort of odd to rag on the people who are doing it... be thankful its not you
What I like about UPS is that many of their successful managers who are pulling in nearly 6 figures or more started doing what I'm doing..loading trucks, getting dirty and sweaty.

They really do take safety very seriously. They want to see their workers lifting properly. Adhering to all the safety guidelines and loading at a pace they want are two contradicting things, though. You gotta use common sense when loading.

Arent you afraid of "over training"? :)

wow this sounds like a decent job
i need a second job and i might look into this

I just got this job a week ago. I bust my ass for shitty pay but I leave work with my shirt soaked in sweat every day and feeling great. This job plus weight lifting is the ultimate in physical conditioning. Love it, fucking love it.
LOL i did this for a short bit in high school
it is a great cardio workout but it's shit work for shitty pay
nothing is ever good enough, if you load 400 packages in an hour they will then demand 500, 600 etc
you get zero respect and you are surrounded by mentally unstable people
if you can stand being there for more than a month, you are fucking crazy
have things changed since 1989?

Well I haven't been there that long...I am still considered in training and it will remain that way for another week or so, so they don't really expect me to load that much. As far as the people I work with...everyone so far is real nice and helpful. It seems more tolerable than you describe.
wow this sounds like a decent job

If you're looking for a second part-time job this is a great opportunity. Many people do that...have a regular job and get this as a part-time for the AMAZING benefits, extra pay, and the workout. Just be aware that the benefits do not kick in until you complete a year. But you get awesome discounts on many things such as suits, jewelry, cars, your cell phone bill, books, movie tickets, etc. The list is fucking endless. It has its perks. Definitely consider it.
-
sounds like a shit job for a bodybuilder... jay cutler said that when he worked at a golf course in his younger years he wouldn't even mow the greens... he just said he'd park his golf cart and get his meals in out on the course.

my stint ended in summer of 99 and no, not much changed then.
i remember there was an epileptic guy working on our dock, and he went into a seizure.
as he was shaking, one of the cheesedicks that worked with us goes "oh, he'll be fine in a couple minutes", and reaches into his pocket and grabs a cigarette.
it was fucked up, but apparently they were roommates, so it was fine.

hey, i was getting ready to go to a school with 20,000 girls. i wasn't heading in there naked, i needed some money!

yes, fuck having money. whatever will us getbiggers say when we see how stringy you are? in the words of quaker oats "aren't you terrified??"
-
Honestly why not just work at a convenience store and do fuck all for nearly the same amount of money?

haha you sound like me when i was in training
didn't seem too bad at first, people were nice blah blah
wait until you are out of training and they demand you to load a certain amount per hour
if you are too slow you get sent to the unload where you have to work 10 times as hard and 10 times as fast
the good part is the supervisiors get zero respect, you can tell them off and they can't do anything once you are in the union

another thing, maybe things have changed but they lied about everything from the beginning
i remember the newspaper ad said you would get benefits, when i started you had to wait 6 months or so, the ad made it sound like you got benefits right away
also they told me they didn't care about how fast you loaded, as long as you didn't mis sort the packages
the truth was they didn't care if you had 100 mis sorts, as long as you finished loading a truck within an hour
i loaded something like 15000 packages without one single mis sort in a month, they sent me to the unload because other guys loaded faster while having tons of mis sorts ::)

well, it's your fault for trying too hard. they wouldn't give us percentages, they'd give us a "scan quota". so we'd scan like 400 in a row, then not scan half the truck.
i was also a 2nd string sorter, so whenever they'd send our main sorter somewhere else, i'd sort. that was great. you're high up on the belt, i'd just sit up there and smoke.

Spare me. I'm the only new guy in my section. I see the pace everyone works at and I will be up to speed soon enough. You make it seem like an unreasonably grueling job. It's not. If every worker was as wishy washy as you, there would be no productivity.

Do you still take those test? Look for the give aways at the end of the month!!
Insurance kicks in on the first day of the sixth month that you started ;)

Spare me. I'm the only new guy in my section. I see the pace everyone works at and I will be up to speed soon enough. You make it seem like an unreasonably grueling job. It's not. If every worker was as wishy washy as you, there would be no productivity.
hmm again that's what i thought while training
keep thinking positive, that will keep you going ;)

I give you props for doing some hard labor. About 8 months ago while I was between jobs and living off of my 401K, I decided to get a job to offset the money coming out of my savings. I worked for a lumber yard arranging orders for contractors. It was hard work but I did get that sense of satisfaction at the end of a hard days work. The kind I never had when I would finish out the day at my desk job.
It was great. Awesome way to blow off steam and not have too much face to face interaction with people.
The other job I had was cleaning pools part time. That was fun. If I could work both of those jobs and make what I make now, I would be a happy man. Being a mediation specialist for an insurance company I don't think the two part time salaries would ever come close.......but everyones gotta have a dream.

A real life Doug Heffernan in the making here.

i quit 20 years ago
worst job ever
E
That was one of the best Jobs that i have ever had. I came home soaking wet even when it was 30 degrees outside!! I learned so much from UPS and i am still proud that i got the chance to work for them.

How do you like building the T-Walls? I had people who could not build a damn wall and i was like wtf? I always told them that it was like playing Tetris
That seems to be the #1 training tip...pretend you're playing tetris. I do my best but it's still hard to get used to. I see guys who have been working there a while who know exactly where to put every box...it's second nature to them. Sometimes when I have a box I need to stop and think about where to put it. Time will fix that, though, as I get used to the job.

They wrote a new contract...my benefits don't kick in until one year. :-\

I agree. I think it would benefit everyone to do some manual labor at some point in their lives. Great experience.

Wow! I am shocked that the union let that happen. No benefits untill a year... >:(
That sucks because i know Exactly how hard that job can be and is.
I hope that you have cool supervisors.
Try to get there early and bring a bunch of quarters and buy all the Dasani water from the machines!!
I never had a problem with having my fridge full of water!!
Building the T-Walls will come quick and be like second nature.
I did not think much about working at UPS or that it would be a "Hard Job" but now when i get a package from those guys...I respect them. They had to start where you are starting and did all that work too.
Try to get on the slide though. Does your Super come to help you out? It was hard for me not to help my guys out when i became a supervisor but the union would get involved and not let me help because i would "Take away Hours from the guys".

The union don't have the same amount of power as a few decades ago.
They've been making alot concessions in recent years.
-
UPS drivers have a civilized shift and do not load their own boxes, whereas Fedex drivers who have no union have much longer shifts AND have to load their own boxes early-morning. Fedex needs a union.
-
Fedex needs a union.
Agreed.
I imagine they got a few "union busting" tricks up there sleeves but it would really nice to see them go that way.
-
You would never know it from the outside but Fedex seriously over-works the employees, because they can and there's no union.
I saw the hours Fedex drivers work, then asked UPS drivers about their days and there's a significant difference. I use UPS now for shipping in order to avoid supporting slave labor.
Today
NEW YORK -- FedEx Corp. is set to launch a multimillion dollar marketing campaign on Tuesday against chief rival UPS Inc., arguing the world's largest shipping carrier is the driving force behind a bill that would make it easier for FedEx workers to unionize.
The bill currently before Congress would switch FedEx to the jurisdiction of the National Labor Relations Act from the National Railway Labor Act. The Railway Labor Act allows workers to organize, if all workers vote on a union at the same time. That has been a roadblock to unions that could not afford nationwide organizing campaigns.
If FedEx Express workers were to be reclassified under the National Labor Relations Act, they could organize one terminal at a time.
FedEx's nearly 5,000 pilots are the company's only employees that currently have a union. The company has a total work force of 290,000. UPS has about 425,000 workers; more than half are union members. Most of UPS' unionized workers are members of the Teamsters.
FedEx says that UPS will benefit from the legislation because it could potentially drive up costs for its closest competitor. FedEx also argues that more unions would mean a greater chance of work slowdowns or strikes.

Fedex is horrible and all my buddies wanted to get into UPS. I liked the Union but some people took advantage of it and that pissed me off because some people did not pull their own load and forced others to work even harder.

If a job can't pay enough to support someone with a family with one breadwinner, that job has to be redesigned. Jobs in the economy should be examined with a gestalt attitude. If a job doesn't pay enough to support a family, then it is probable that that family will be on some form of welfare and so therefore that job is a leach on the whole society.
The logic is perfect...

The one that i worked in was pretty cool. If you caught someone stealing "ANYTHING and i MEAN ANYTHING" You got paid!! I caught someone stealing a magazine and it was a Hustler Mag and i got $500 for that. I know that the lowest you got for someone who was stealing was $500 and it went as high as $5k. I caught another guy trying to steal a Diamond ring and i get a hell of a Pay Day that week. I use to get people to try to steal so that i could get more money. That also helped with weeding out the idiots also. I use to see steroids pop open and would tape them back on and send them to Mr. Smith....Good Ole' days. Their was a religious kid and a box popped open and abunch of Dildo's hit him in the face and i have never laughed so hard in my lifetime!! ;D

Yeah the benefits thing sucks but what are ya gonna do? It's a stable job, with opportunities for advancement part-time which is great while I go to school. The work is brutal, I just got home now (shirt's soaked). The supervisor I'm working with is a good guy, he makes himself available in case I have any questions. I like him. And I know what you mean about seeing a UPS worker...when I see them I have respect for them too knowing they started doing what I'm doing. It takes a certain amount of perseverance. Btw, what do you mean by "getting on the slide"?

I hear stealing is a problem among the UPS workers. I can't believe you get a pay day if you catch someone...is that only for supervisors or anybody?
My advice....get an education and a career and train in a gym.....call me crazy.
I don't go to work to train I go to work to get paid. The conditioning is just a plus. Besides, the money I make gets put towards an education and the gym bill.

I'm afraid you miss the logic...
i get the logic. but there are millions of jobs out there that just aren't worth much, such as being a UPS package handler. millions of packages are handled daily, if every asshole that touched the box was getting 30 bucks an hour, it would cost us 300 dollars to mail a 50 dollar item out.
-
I quit because i got tendenitis in my shoulders from it back when I was in college. My lifting techniques weren't the best. I would throw things above my head using my shoulders too much.
Also, your muscles will be overworked for sure doing that. Epic bad for your health and for 'bodybuilding'.

if you mean, loading trucks with packages/tires that came down slides, then yes.

I worked for Fedex. Yea the management was anti-union.
-
if you mean, loading trucks with packages/tires that came down slides, then yes.
No, you were a loader. The slide is also knows and sorting and that is what tore my shoulders all up. Loading, Unloading, Sorter and Smalls.

yea i think they would slide down 300 packages per hour.

Overworked? Only in the mind of a bodybuilder - someone who thrives on lifting weights as a hobby - would a few hours of functional lifting and loading be considered bad.

Well i worked 25hrs a week. That's not a lot of work hours, but for constantly lifting shift, that's beyond 'over-training' for your muscles.

Again you miss the logic, you redesign the low value jobs and make them worth more. Somewhat as you don't see charwomen scrubbing floors by hand anymore, machines are used on floors now...Machines are used to sew...I'm sure even the linear thinkers here can see the point I am making.

i signed up for 10:30 - 2:30 shift, but they always wanted you to stay until 4

Look into looking for thieves because it can get you a nice paycheck! I caught that one dude that was trying to steal a diamond ring, $5K brung a smile to my face and there was like $225 and that was my basic check.

Times have changed man...I'd take more hours if they had them, but they don't. Overtime is out due to the economy. I'm very lucky to get the full 20.

True. I know that you are dead tired after loading and want to get the hell out after but see if you can help walk the belts again or ask them if you can help set things up for the Pre Load or Afternoon group! Just trying to help you make some extra cash because i remember how hard it was. Get Hazmat Certified, $1 more per hour and it can get you out of the trucks also or try for one of the Tower spots. Towers are also another $1 raise and i know that it is not much but every dollar helps.

LIGHT WEIGHT!!!!!!

LIGHT WEIGHT!!!!!!
Yea, i always loved the E-Regs and workin the slide and having to be able to see where four different packages are going and seeing each weight on each one and getting one that says 62lbs but actually weighs 110lbs!! I MISS THAT!! Desk Jobs suck :D

I am very interested in all this, and will inquire about it when I put in a few months seniority.

Do it quick brah! When i ran the loaders and i had a guy that wanted to know everything, i knew then that was a guy that i wanted to work the tower because he "wants to Advance". It was a college job for me but i did it for three years and i advanced pretty quick and then made supervisor. I understand that you wanna put in seniority but just keep learning and doing your best. You will be sore but you can get up in UPS if you show intrest. I remember that most guys had like two other jobs and i could never count on them and they would forget to scan in and out of trucks but you seem smart, GO GET IT BRAH! You have to do your time in the trucks and i hated that but you will learn how to play Tetris and build T-Walls like they are nothing. I have been out of UPS for four years but i still remember the sort numbers and the codes to every package and where it goes! Get on the slide and you will not need to train your delts ever! They will be popping out but if you get on the slide, that is the beginning to know how it all works and they will put you in different spots and you get to learn everything.

What is "getting on slide", exactly? I'm not sure I know what you're talking about.
Alright, sounds kind of silly to say, but you're getting me psyched. Today I felt like a real worker. Much more was expected out of me by everyone. Once I adapted, I loved it. Time goes by so fast there, and again, GREAT workout. I'm building walls better now, it's beginning to come more naturally. Should only be another week or two before I ace that shit.
I'll make my way up the UPS ladder soon enough.
-
Good job man.. Working at a deskjob can be bad for your health. Just don't mees up you back.
Honestly after my first couple of days my back did bother me a lot. I am much more conscious to bend thoroughly at the knees in order to limit the amount of stress on my lower back. It's very important to work safe, I learned that fast.

The slide is where they sort packages but we just called it the slide as the packages "Slid" down to us and i worked the point which is the toughest part to work on the slide. I always got psyched at work...I mean it is so damn "PHYSICAL" and i was like an animal while i was there and worked out before i went in sometimes and i was so damn hungry at work but always brought a Protein shake and sometimes a couple while i was at work. I was just as hungry after my 5 hours or more were up! It will become easier and it will be like driving a car after a few weeks but it is fun! Just tell your supervisor that you want to get into different parts then just "Loading". I had guys that showed no emotion or even wanting to advance and they stayed in the trailers loading and i moved up and go to be a supervisor. I guess what i am trying to tell you is, "Do not be satisfied with just being a loader". Show enthusiasm and be willing to go that extra mile. That extra mile will and can take you up to be a supervisor over the whole Center or you could get a transfer. I wish that i would have stayed with that company but i left and i make the same as i would had i became a center manager.

I remeber those days. UPS is a great job and very Physical and the only other job that was more demanding then UPS was working as a Coal Miner. I would take UPS anyday over working in the mines in W.V.

I'm definitely gonna start showing enthusiasm for other aspects of the job and ask questions. I can't wait until I master my job and go into work every day knowing exactly what has gotta be done and doing it with ease!
I get psyched up before work too man! I did my shift yesterday after leg day at the gym. Loading after squats was a real killer, but now I know if I can do that then I can do anything! Haha! I'm looking for that supervisor position, but HR said I need to wait at least 7 or 8 months before I can expect something like that. He said to just keep coming in on time, doing what I gotta do, don't be absent, work hard, and I should be fine. We'll see.

Why is this TA guy so arrogant?

LOL at the ''managers'' telling the minimum wage guys who work there bones off that they will climb an imaginary ladder. Thats prob the first thing they teach you in a twenty K business school; Tell them you started out just like them with no diploma's, only a hard working mentality and good will.
-
problem with a shitty job like this is that you are way too tired and sore to work out.
sure you are working out, but its hard manual labor. not going to make your chest grow. maybe your back a little stronger. but in the long run, you will loose weight.
-
plus these type of jobs frown upon donning the thongs and some posing oil to settle differences on the line....

They wouldn't demand that amount but they started making me jump from one trailer to the next, and one of the dudes that worked up the ladder with the belts kept telling me I needed to go faster even though I would be going as fast as I could. Also, they started putting me all by myself instead of having a dude come in to help once in a while. All this made loading more boxes inevitable, and it made the work much harder and more annoying by the third week. Not worth it for 8.50 an hour 20 hours a week.
Work inventory at Best Buy now. More hours, a little better pay, better people to work with, and after the UPS experience I don't get too excited over shit I have no experience with anymore ;D
