MINNEAPOLIS – A replay of the nation's only file-sharing case to go to trial has ended with the same result — a Minnesota woman was found to have violated music copyrights and must pay huge damages to the recording industry.
A federal jury ruled Thursday that Jammie Thomas-Rasset willfully violated the copyrights on 24 songs, and awarded recording companies $1.92 million, or $80,000 per song.
Defense attorney Joe Sibley said the music companies failed to prove allegations that Thomas-Rasset gave away songs by Gloria Estefan, Sheryl Crow, Green Day, Journey and others.
Sibley urged jurors not to ruin Thomas-Rasset's life with a debt she could never pay. Under federal law, the jury could have awarded up to $150,000 per song.
WOOOSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH !!!
-
Fuck that. What bullshit.
-
LOL... they were probably some embarassing songs too. She had to sit in court for a month hearing the titles of the Jonas brothers or Miley Cyrus tracks she ruined her life over.
-
You can have my utorrent when you pry it from my cold dead harddrive.
-
I feel much safer now!
-
Can't they just make her pay for the downloads? What are they, like a dollar each?
Giver her a small fine.
What the fuck is wrong with our judicial system?
-
they are going to settle for a few grand. trust me....

Agreed. A total waste of time. It's certainly not going to stop me from sharing/trading digital files: movies, music, and more. I do it every weekend. 8)
-
then they should forbid to sell pc's with a cd/dvd rewriter
-

No. But does the punishment fit the crime? People who commit crimes that endanger lives get off easier. Assuming she has a good record, why ruin her life for downloading songs?
-

its a statutory penalty. a song is treated same as any other copywritten materials. if you think the penalty was excessive, then look at it from the point of view of the artist or composer who creates the work.
-
LOL talk about having shit luck
everybody downloads music, she's the only one that has to pay for it

It's not stealing. It's copyright infringement.
Digital copies are not finite, physical resources.

you can steal intellectual property which is what a song is
-
they just cant beat it and fail to understand that, if they want people to buy music then lower the prices or add some extra material stuff to the cd. maybe the "artists" can also make a little less money?
-
this is total bullshit just like our judicial system. everyone and there brother were swapping songs on the computer, and they want to nail a few poor suckers to make an example. michael vick got 2 years for killing some dogs, note i'm a dog lover and hope he roasts in hades for his offenses, but donte stallworth got drunk killed a guy with his vehicle, in effect killing someones father and he gets 30 days in jail. some guys in pa beat a mexican immigrant to death for being a mexican and got off scott free at first. than due to public outrage got retryed and were sentenced to a few monthes for assault, they couldn't retry them for murder because they already got off on that charge. where's the justice certaintly not in the us judicial system. i rest my case.

That would be plagiarism, which is not the case here.
The punishment is excessive to the nth degree, which is against the law. The defense has a decent case here.

ok I'll look at it from the view of Mariah Carey. Hmmm, I've only got 100 million dollars in the bank and I work once a week. What if i fail to collect an extra 2 million over my 18 million for the next fiscal year? my world will collapse!
-
Thanks. That reminds me, I need to download a few tracks of Limewire. ;)
It's laughable that the music industry is crying about copyrights. I should sue them for producing the trash I've heard for the past fucking decade. :-\

How is it that Sony or whoever owns the distribution rights to something like the Brandenbug Concertos? It's kind of hard to get an answer out of 'ol Bach these days, but I bet he would disapprove of those who presume to claim ownership of his work.

this is laughable, like sueing a homeless person for 1million dollars, you might win, but you ain't getting no money, this is just for the news to try and scare people, believe me she isn't going to pay or even attempt to pay them, she will end up paying a few thousand and get some publicity out of it come out even.

Why did she share the files? That's how she got caught. She should have moved the files to another location on her hard drive as soon as she downloaded them. Plus who want to share files with other users all the time? It eats into your bandwith!

I totally disagree with you.
I think filesharing between private individuals should be totally free.
Of course it should be free.
If I have a book, and you want to borrow it, you can.
I I have a CD, and you want to borrow it, you can.
What's next, are the corporations and the governments gonna try to charge me if I play a song at home on my guitar?
This is just Fascism.

x2 and not only that, when people are over charged and downright stolen from basically for decades for overpriced music beyond belief it is only give and take that is taking place, every action has a reaction. In this case greed has screwed these men now for the conceivable future.

To a corporation, their profits are worth more than a life. Seriously.

Here in Brasil we have no problem with the downloads. US must be harsher.

Yup. I quit buying music after one too many artist put out a couple decent tracks to make it to radio and then filled the cd with garbage filler. I still buy trance and some rock, TOOL mostly but I only spend money when the artist truly deserves it. Most do not, and they suffer accordingly. That is called CAPITALISM.

I am glad to be in the company of so many fellow Socialists.

Whos stealing! I'll tell you whos stealing, the fatcat rich music companies and artists charging ridiculous sums for a 20c CD and 30 minutes work. I dont see PINK and other famous recording artists doing it tough. FUCK SONY and the rest of the monopoly screwing the poor majority into the ground. Matthew 5:5 "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth." Too right we will, via the INTERNET and torrent sites

Socialism at its finest!

as a result of this well-publicized case, there are thousands of people who will turn off their sharing the next day.
it's a deterrant that will work on some people. Record companies make $ from this verdict, even though she'll neverp ay a dime.
And personally, I download for 99 cents with I-tunes. You don't have to worry about viruses. I used to use bearshare, limewire, winMX even.

Really? I have a hard time buying that. Software companies like to make the same claim: they count every pirated copy of their software as a lost sale and then go on to claim they have lost hundreds of millions to illegal copying, but as someone who routinely copies software I can tell you that if copying were not possible and I had to choose between legitimately buying or doing without, I would do without 90% of the titles I have copied. Just because I copied a piece of software (or a music file) doesn't mean I would have legitimately purchased it otherwise. In most cases, it is something I didn't really need and would never have purchased.
The same is true for music files.

Is this really a SONY suit? I used to train one of the top lawyers of Sony about a year ago right here in NJ. I believe she had a house in NJ that was built for her but spent most of her time in NYC. She wasnt too pleasant to be around and thought very highly of herself. I remember asking her if she ever thought of coaching gymnastics for kids (since she had a background) and she said "what the heck for im rich". My response was "uhhh i coached wrestling for years for FREE just wanting to help kids and enjoy their progress/success"......some people just dont get it. Sounds like the type of person who would run a law suit like this

Exactly.
Who the fcuk are doing the stealing?
I don't see the fat record companies making all the songs.
Yet they are making big bucks when an artist sells their songs.
What's right about that?
These companies has monopolized the music industry, now they're afraid that their times are coming to an end.
Fcuk those fat companies I say.
I've stated in a different post that I have no problem coughing up money for live gigs, and spending money on music per se.
But I rather make sure all the cash gets to the band, without a big fcuking chunk landing in the pockets of fat record company owners who doesn't do diddley for the artists.

LOL, That would be great, a countersuit from her claiming the music she downloaded is fuckin shite and she wants some corperate suit to explain in a courtroom why.
Now that i would pay to see (or just download it from youtube) :D
-
i wonder if the sale of music dvd's would equals the same as it is today if people couldnt have downloaded music in advance. i bought music dvds from bands that would otherwise never became known to me.

Haha. You got it. These corporate pig bitches are flipping out, trying to figure out how to contain this "problem". Things are trending toward giving the artists more control over their destiny, and the worthless middlemen can't stand it.
I mean, throwing darts at a map and using gangs of lawyers on some random person, followed by a corporate-media "blitz" to make the most of it (but only revealing the utter stupidity of it all), is the best tactic they've got.
Time to rearrange your scam, gentlemen. It ain't working anymore.

Yes, so true. It's a typical corporate game: writing false shit down on paper and assigning real value to it.

Epic black and white viewpoint. Have you never downloaded music online? You must be the only person in the world.
-
The Goddamn record companies think that this is going to HELP them? All this does is make everyone HATE them.
Fucking U.S. judicial system.
-
The entertainment industry is doomed anyway. Few years from now all record companies, movie companies and video game producers are broke. You'll make so lil money with that stuff that nobody will do this to himself anymore.
The internet is teh devil, an invention many wish could be revoked. But it's too late, it took over the world within few years and basically made any other form of media unnecessary (TV, books, newspapers, CDs, DVDs,...)
-

Why would you have to worry about viruses anyway, all you are downloading is the .mp3 extension? Its the people who run executables from Limewire who need shooting.
-
if a band i like is in town, i'll go see them. might even buy a shirt.
buy a cd or mp3? ha ha, lolz.

My only regret is that my download cap is 120 gigs a month :(
there's only so many divx movies and whole band discographies that I can download with that cap... that's why I usually don't download Blu Ray movies, unless it's a really good title!
;)

Bahhhh...my ass... I have single handedly supported the movie studios and RIAA for over 20 years..
I have over 650 original cd's , and about 800 dvd's, so they can suck my balls... besides what I download usually is digital copies of what I already own, cause Im too lazy to rip cd's and dvd's to my ipod or laptop (like wathing movies on flights)
:)
with my aproximate calculations I've put aprox. $14,625 in CD sales in the RIAA's pocket and another $22,400
in movies/dvd's into the movies studios...not to mention the amount of times I've gone to the theatre to see a new movie... so they can suck my balls.
