I was a varsity baseball stud during my glory days. Every 450 lb "powerlifter" at my gym benching 185 could have played "pro football" if not for a mysterious knee injury.

I'm great in football...like, one of the best you've ever seen great.

I'm ok in basketball (for a black guy, not so 'ok').

I'm ok in tennis.

I'm ok in soccer.

I'm proficient in plenty of sports.

...

But despite my incredible structure, I suck at bodybuilding.  That whole muscle-building thing gets in the way...plus, I'm a schmoe who likes stronger girls, so there's that whole mindfuck issue, too.

Good thing bodybuilding isn't a sport.   ;)

I still play but never really got good at it. I'm pretty good at table soccer, if you want to call this a sport! *ggg* Just won a small local tournament with a friend...

Fast runner-- can run a 5 minute mile. Discovered this later in life however, (mid 20's) while training for bodybuilding competitons...go figure. Wouldve been good in track had I not pissed away my athletic abilities in favor of my social life going thru school. I HATE team sports however...didnt get the whole point of it.

you thinking of that speaks volumes

Insomnia : you gotta have serious lungs to pull a 5 min mile ... you realize that's 4 consecutive 75 sec 400m laps

the reason I am asking you is because I trained before and currently train a pro soccer player and one of the things I did and I do with some athletes is 400 m laps ...intervals

at 6 ft , 1min 15sec for a 400m lap is a semisprint pace...for you, being shorter, even more so

I am willing to bet anything that u exagerate a little bit (more)

ok...youre right! the actual time was 5:02. keep in mind that I am very accustomed to doing sprints at various intervals on a constant 15% grade. Very big, strong glutes & hams too which definatly help.

Level ground feels like nothing to me.

I should also add that my resting heart rate at the time was 42bpm

I happen to know these stats because at the time I was testing for law enforcement, and was in the police academy.

My best 12k (7.5 miles) race time was 57 minutes. Do the math. that is with (i think a half mile portion of it?) being steep uphill grade.

Im seeing potential with my kids...they wont make the same mistakes I did in life. I will live vicariously thru them.  :)

BULLSHIT.

Just for fun, and my own curiosity's sake, I'm gonna try and make it to a track and have somebody time/ videotape me. It would be interesting to see how much difference 8 years and an extra 25 lbs makes. I bet I can still do it in under 7 minutes.  :D

I will report back to you on this!

What a bunch of bullshit, you can't play basketball at a top amateur level. Aren't you like 40???

Top amateur level would most likely consist of the shortest players being 6' and unless you have an insane jumpshot and ball control you are going to get laughed off the court.

That proves absolutely ZERO.

Height is so crucial in basketball and if you don't have it you won't play top level competition unless you are a freak of nature like Isiah Thomas and Allen Iverson.

You are certainly your own biggest fan.

If you are so naturally gifted why are you working in a swiming pool and playing with teenage retard girls for a living?

Surely you have a few good years of world class thleticism left where you could dominate any sport?  ::)

lol where did that rock picture come from its epic

i was an all-state wrestler at 215

and all-big bend goalkeeper in soccer, which i actually had and maybe still have real potential, i made the cut at the olympic regional tryouts but my mom couldnt afford to send me to the next round, people always say because i was big and quick i shouldve played football.  It would all be speculation, but I know for a fact I could play semi-pro soccer or maybe even pro as a GK.

raquetball all at top amateur level ( tennis I played as a professional )

I played A raquetball

I absolutely loved it !

I played tennis on the tour future level

did you know Cliff Swine tried his luck at tennis playing Futures in the qualies ? he wasn't able to win matches though ...nonetheless just to play at that level speaks volumes about his ability as an athlete

"

Cliff Swain and Michael Jordan have a lot in common, though perhaps not at first glance. Swain is, after all, a South Boston Yankee with a full head of black hair; at 5'11" he's a good seven inches shorter than Jordan; and he's virtually unknown outside racquetball circles. But Swain dominates professional racquetball as much as Jordan ever did basketball, and there are plenty of other parallels to suggest that Swain goes further than merely wanting to "be like Mike."

Swain, 28, is his sport's best player and arguably its greatest ever. Certainly no one has achieved a record like the one Swain amassed in the recently concluded 1993-94 pro racquetball season, winning 13 of the 19 International Racquetball lour stops, with two streaks of five tournament victories in a row. Swain was especially daunting over two weekends in December. First he took the Coca-Cola Pro Am in Denver by winning four matches without a loss. (Pro matches consist of the best three of live 11-point games.) It was only the second time in the sport's history that a player had won a pro stop without losing a single game; Swain himself was the first to do it, in 1989. The next week Swain went 15-0 over live matches to win the VCI Pro Am Championships in Dallas. And with a win in Anaheim in March, he clinched the season No. 1 ranking for the third time in his career, equaling Jordan as a three-time pro champion.

But don't expect Swain to jump to another sport now that he's won a third title. He has already taken a couple of years off from racquetball to sample another sport. After sealing his first No. 1 ranking, in 1989-90, he sat out two racquetball seasons for a go at pro tennis.

Moving from racquetball to tennis may not seem as quixotic a stretch as switching from basketball to baseball, but remember that most tennis pros begin training at a young age. Swain had barely played the game when he turned pro at 24, yet he achieved surprising success. In his second year of competition he was ranked 11th and co-ranked ninth in New England in singles and doubles, respectively.

What made Swain quit racquetball for a shot at tennis? Partly it was the lure of so many more spectators, and partly it was the unusual encouragement he received at his local club in 1990. Boris Becker and his coach at the time, Ion Tiriac, showed up at the Boston Athletic Club one day with Tiriac's teenage son in tow. Swain obliged the kid with a game of tennis, and soon Tiriac and Becker had stopped hitting to watch Swain. "Tiriac asked me how long I'd been playing," says Swain. "I told him I didn't know—maybe 15, 20 times. He said I would get good fast and that I should give it a try. I figured while I was young enough, I would give it a try."

Swain returned to racquetball for the 1992-93 season, having decided it was more fulfilling to be the absolute best at one sport than to be a late-starting non-champion at another. He finished the season with his second No. 1 ranking. But he didn't give up other sports entirely. Every chance he gets, Swain still plays hockey with a passion rivaling Jordan's for golf.

Swain plays most of his hockey in American Amateur Hockey Association "noncontact" games around Boston. In May he showed up for a tournament in Acton, Mass., having forgotten his shoulder pads; he played anyway and scored two goals in his team's 8-0 win. He even got into a brief altercation in the goal crease with an opposing defenseman who forgot he was in a noncontact league and fattened Cliff's lip with a cross-check.

News of the bruise did not sit well with Cliff's father, Red Swain. "I hate it," says Red, a bindery supervisor at a Boston printing company. "I say, 'Cliff, I like you to enjoy yourself, but you're playing with your rent.' "

Cliff understands his dad's logic but plays hockey anyway. "Sometimes," he says, "it's not fun to do the smart thing."

Fun has always meant sports to Swain. Red bought Cliff his first Whiffle bat when he was three, and neighbors used to gather to watch the little boy take his cuts. Red believes to this day that baseball could have been Cliff's best sport, but that was not all that Cliff was good at. At four he was beating kids twice his age at swim meets near the family's apartment in San Jose. When he was six, his family moved to Braintree, Mass., near Boston, and hockey was Cliff's sport from then until he took up raequetball at 13."

Although I have decent bodybuilding genetics (muscle shape, ability to retain some mass while cutting), I'm not a natural athlete at all due mainly to below-average cardiovascular capacity and poor coordination.  I seem to do best at individual "sports", like skiing, rock climbing, shooting, and the like.  I played football and wrestled in high school.  Good enough to make varsity, but overall "below average" in talent.  I played a lot of intermural volleyball and raquetball in college, and wasn't too bad, but that wasn't real competition, just people in it for fun.

Although they're intended to be fun, I know a lot of people who took their intramural sports *very* seriously.  Of course, being in a sports fraternity, it was expected from us, but we were so naturally gifted across-the-board that we didn't have to play all crazy and yet, we still dominated.  :)

Not bragging (well, maybe a little), but one year, we held the championships in all but a few sports (not counting badminton and shit like that).  We didn't win A-division flag football, something I took personally, but ruled everything else.

Ok, this is what my life has become.  I'm boasting on GetBig about intramural dominance from almost 20 years ago instead of talking about the supermodel I should've been fucking here in my mansion tonite. lol

Definitely.

If I was better at something than all my athletic friends, then I just assumed I was *really* good.  Of course, this was at a time when I lived in a town with only 8000 people. L O L

As I got older, I moved to a couple of larger towns, and the standards changed.  Then when I got to the university, I really had some eye-opening experiences, because my school alone was about 5 times the size of the town I grew up in.

I ended up playing club football, which was unbelievably competitive as most of the players were guys who just weren't quite good enough to make the varsity squad at a large, D1 university.  But even though we had some fast guys with great skills, there was a night-and-day difference between that program and the varsity program when it came to the size of the linemen.  Game. Over. lol

At 5-10, 185 lbs, I was undersized (I played like a 6-footer, though), but I used to wonder what it would've been like to attend an NFL tryout.  Knowing some of the guys who did get NFL jobs, I always believed I could've made someone's team.

I really should get to sleep....I'm sitting here dreaming about a past that I never made for myself. :(

lol ... why do I get challenged always by 2 left feet type of guys ?

poly or goudy couldn't make a basket if the hoop would be eye level and 1 ft away lol

This might be top amateur level in romania, by german basketball standards this looks like Landesliga at best, which is the the 6. highest division in germany. But this is just a 3 minute clip, maybe you have more? Me moved up to the 7. highest division, but i didn't play that much. *g* We get a new coach though, maybe a get in the rotation this season...

Who'd you play for, Blackrock college? I know what you mean about selections, it's so political its frightening, seen many a good player get fucked over cos some dudes dad paid a selector...one of the reasons i stopped coaching

If I had of went to Blackrock I would probably have got selected.  Unfortunately I came from small, unsuccessful school and didn't stand a chance as no-one stuck up for me in selection meetings.

It is funny as the same shit is still happening.  Keith Earls never really got selected for Irish schools, spent quite a bit of time on the bench, but is now a Lion...

I wonder if I am/was (as I haven't played in a long while) the best white basketball player on here?

sev has a decent resume.  I actually played for a low-level pro team in Augsburg, Germany.

it depends

like what we play

for example they used me to defend...I was very athletic and could outhustle even the fastest pointguards...put pressure on the shooter that's hot , distribute the ball and my specialty , shooting 3's

1 on 1 is diff...

I hate 1 on 1.  we sound like similar players....hustle, defense, etc...  In my younger years I was a SG, 3's galore....the last league I played in, an intramural league at Wake Forest Univ, I was a bruising PG who distributed the ball and rebounded.   Never even looked to shoot.

I miss basketball sometimes....

6', so not much of a difference.  One thing I noticed from years ago is that the added bulk, strength and weight was a HUGE advantage in rebounding from when I was so skinny.  I weighed about 165-185 when I was playing a lot.  At WFU I was about 210-220.  Certainly couldn't play for hours like in the old days!

when I was playing in GE, I liked the game much better than what the US games is at times.....europe was a lot of coming off screens and ball movement.  US was too much 1 on 1.

in US I played streetball and point guard at a comunitty college ...

I felt the game was more physical in US and more in the open

in Europe is more structured and like you said, a lot more ball movement and comming off screens

I really did like the structure better.  More of a team game than the US game.  A lot more grabbing and holding in the US on defense.  Which is good if you are playing defense, but not so much when you are on offense.

It was funny listening to the Germans talk trash to each other... ;D  They would have to translate to me during timeouts and tell me things to call or say about the other players.  It was a lot of fun.  Had beer after every game.

I caught crap too.  I was taught to ALWAYS keep a hand on someone you are guarding when they have their back to you.  Also to use your forearm to control their movement.....but in GE it was a foul and players whined about it.  Blocking out on rebounding was very different too, much less using your hands to get position.

Which division? 2.Liga? Regionalliga? A few months ago i played 1-1 against a former 2.Liga-Player. He was in his mid forties bud still in great shape. I hab no chance guarding him. He hit like 90% of his jumpshots, even from just inside the three point line and with a hand in his face.

It was quite a few years ago, early 90's, and they always referred to it as the III division.  We had a decent season and I heard they moved up to II the following season.  Does that help? It was probably the equivalent of Div II college basketball here in the states at the time.  I had a lot of fun.

Division III is Regionalliga. That's good - if your not a bench player from the own youth program you should have earned a few bucks. Germany won the eurpean championsship in 93, so the early 90's were a good time for german basketball. Our team played one of the players from the 93 championsship team a few weeks ago. Hansi Gnad, 6'10 and about 260pounds in good shape, now 46 years old. He still kicked our ass of course.

It was pretty solid competition.  They were only allowed to have 2 Americans (or foreigners I should say) on each team.  I made a little bit, blew it all on german beer and fests!  I really liked Germany, it was a great time to be there.  Many of the German players were very good and had played together for years, even though they were relatively young.  Good chemistry.
