compared to some I was pretty good...compared to others I sucked ass ....so it's relative
Definitely.
If I was better at something than all my athletic friends, then I just assumed I was *really* good. Of course, this was at a time when I lived in a town with only 8000 people. L O L
As I got older, I moved to a couple of larger towns, and the standards changed. Then when I got to the university, I really had some eye-opening experiences, because my school alone was about 5 times the size of the town I grew up in.
I ended up playing club football, which was unbelievably competitive as most of the players were guys who just weren't quite good enough to make the varsity squad at a large, D1 university. But even though we had some fast guys with great skills, there was a night-and-day difference between that program and the varsity program when it came to the size of the linemen. Game. Over. lol
At 5-10, 185 lbs, I was undersized (I played like a 6-footer, though), but I used to wonder what it would've been like to attend an NFL tryout. Knowing some of the guys who did get NFL jobs, I always believed I could've made someone's team.
I really should get to sleep....I'm sitting here dreaming about a past that I never made for myself.
