Works well. Lot of the college staff where I work, plus grad students, swear by it. Spanish and French being number one with them. Other learning programs, like the one offered by the Monterey army language school or the UN, are tops but big bucks. Can get different programs through the California college systems. But for the money Rosetta Stones is very good. Uses the flash card approach with pictures and videos. If wanting to learn Spanish with RS, try tuning in Spanish tv and radio stations to learn faster with the program. If living in SoCal your going to pick up a little Spanish slang also. Some very hot Mexican bebes out here.

In your into things like BitTorrent than might try Mininova.org to download complete Rosetta programs for no cost. Not suggesting you do of course.

I have the Japanese edition. Expensive as hell. I'll say its decent for vocabulary but for every day conversation its not good. The pictures are supposed to convey the meaning of the sentence displayed and you're supposed to figure it out w/o an actual translation provided. If I knew what i know now i would have used bittorrent to get it for free. Might be more suitable for non-eastern languaged. Start with Pimsleur which get you speaking and learning the sounds of your target language. I also recommend using a SRS like Anki (google if you don't know it) to help you remember sentences and vocab over long periods of time.

I got the 10 cd Pimsleur program.  it was like 40 bucks I think.  I learned conversational spanish in about 2 weeks, just keeping it on as I drove around town.

Pimsleur is good, gets you talking quickly and helps develop a decent accent. I felt at the end of the course for me to say something I had to be prompted like "How do you say X?" like real conversations work that way.  ;D haha

It's pretty much 6 hours of conversation.  You repeat what they say, at first.  I went from knowing very little spanish to being able to handle converations.  I still had to look up more vocab - nouns and verbs that weren't on the tape.

But then it makes you complete your own sentences.

Maria will ask you in spanish how much $ it costs for three beers.  You'll have to respond with "I want to buy 4 beers for my friends, but I only have 4 dollars".  etc etc.  You have to construct your own sentences.  it's very good.

You don't learn to spell it, but you learn to speak it quick.

R/Stone is a CIA driven product...As soon as you click on the site, you go into the system...What they do is narrow it all down between /myspace/facebook/email/google/yahoo/and hundreds of others including R/stone....However R/stone is much higher on the list because it shows "them" that you have the capacity to learn...

good luck...CIA IS WATCHING YOU AND TAKING NOTES...
