ive been wondering lately, id always thought da vinci probably held that title but now i think Archimedes may be pushing him. and then theres Imhotep, and theres probably great minds of antiquity from the east too that i dont know about, no doubt some Chinese and indians. who do you think is the smartest person ever?
oh and im about to workout arms btw gonna try to get some beef on my tiny bicep/forearm muscle bellies.

Probably some guy who did nothing at all, maybe repaired watches. What the fark does this have to do with oiled-up men in sparkly thongs. ::) ;)

Probably William Sidis, the son of Boris Sidis, at least that is the one we know about.

Leonardo Da Vinci had no sur name,...He was what is politely known as illegitimate or born out of wedlock. The words Da Vinci refer to the town that he was from. If you refer to him with just one word it would be Leonardo. The book and the movie had it wrong...

Isn't he the one who died when he was quite young?
Anyway, Yawn, none of you are smart and everything you say is an insult to my intelligence ::)

The guy who invented the American rugby...

Anyway, Yawn, none of you are smart and everything you say is an insult to my intelligence ::)
Yep.
His father, Boris, was a psychologist with his own theories about "genius". Supposedly he used hypnotic techniques on William as a baby to promote his intellectual gifts. Wheter it worked or not is uncertain (it could have been just genetics), but his intellectual feats were unparalleled. His IQ has been estimated to 250, but the validity of this estimation is uncertain.
-
Tesla
He's the guy who invented bad 80's hair metal and the Tesla Roadster, right?
-
While not "Smart" as we're defining it here... some savants are worthy mentions in this thread for those who are unaware of them.
Kim Peek:
http://www.webtvhub.com/kim-peek-videos-amazing-memory-of-individual-with-savant-syndrome/
He can read a page of a book in less than 10 seconds (about a book an hour) with his left eye reading the left page and his right eye reading the right page at the same time. Everything he reads he memorizes. He is literally a wealth of knowledge memorizing practically everything he comes across...

alternating current, sinusoidal, rootmean square...

They named it Mississippi, but yours is better.

How you like them apples?

This is an easy one. It is suckhisowndick. He is the smartest, toughest, strongest, richest, and most experienced on Getbig or the world. He already has said his IQ is over 180. We hear it all the time................ only from him of course. ;D

Savant was perhaps the smartest person ever.
Marilyn vos Savant
and IQ tests over 200 are believed to be complete BS these days. Savant scored 230 back in the day but depending on the test she couldve got as low as 169.
IQ doesnt work too good for those at the extreme end of the spectrum.

Good point. There is very little data on very IQ people, like for 140-145+, which is natural due to the nature of the bell curve.

I think that Newton chap wasn't stupid.
Socrates was pretty badass, Plato, Aristotle etc.
There's no one measure of "smartness" so it comes down to preference. I think insanely artistic minds which can capture what it is to be alive in a single brush-stroke or note, or whatever are the coolest. But the scientific brains which gave us electricity or the telephone are kinda cool.
People keep naming Ninja Turtles, maybe Dexter Jackson?

According to Guiness, it's Marilyn Savant, ith an IQ of 228 on the Stanford-Binet test. Hoever, that as a score obtained at the age of 10 and as a ratio score - meaning mental age divided by chronological age -, and hen you convert a ratio IQ to a deviation score, it becomes 185.

Smartest living man is Ed Witten. The reason half the theorists working on string theory/M-theory are still working on it as opposed to LQD, Lisi's E8 model, and other various forms of QFT/GR unification is because Ed Witten is still working on it.
When some of the most intelligent people in the world say that the biggest reason String theory still looks like a possible TOE candidate is "Ed Witten believes in it."
There are too many to choose from to name a single person, but it sure as hell isn't some fuckstick artist or musician. I don't place too much faith in IQ tests either. Obviously, a person 15 standard deviations from the norm is going to be "smarter" than the average person, but beyond about 125 or so the tests just don't seem to provide any direct correlation between increase in IQ and increase in novel "brilliant" ideas that improve upon theoretical models of various fields of study.
MattT is probably pretty close to Ed Witten though.
-
Well you should just marry Ed Witten then.

The smartest man ever probably lived and died as a field slave, was homeless, or was a mystic or monk.
Fame is elusive and elitist.

I marry for money, tight vaginas, and belief that a woman's role is to take care of a man and take care of her appearance, not intelligence.
Why the fuck would I marry someone because they're smart? Were you serious with that put down, or is this some kind of "haha...I say really silly things and then see if the person catches the sarcasm" thing?

I don't know that I believe you, but if you can answer this basic question from an introduction to string theory course (first graduate course in string theory, so it should be pretty easy), I'll answer your question.
Consider the Polyakov action of a string moving in D-dimensional Minkowski space background (with metric ημν taking the typical 4x4 matrix form):
S= -T/2 ∫dσ2√h(σ)hαβ(σ)∂αXμ∂βXμ
σα = {στ}; Xμ = Xμ(σα); σ∈[o,π]; τ ∈(-∞,∞)
∑ = the world sheet; hαβ(σγ) = metric on the world sheet
h(σγ) = -det(hαβ); α = 1,2; μ = 0,...,D-1
(I used a short hand notation for partial derivatives, but didn't use the pre-subscript comma that is often used in tensor analysis in case your profs don't regularly use it)
Obviously, I used summation suppression as usual.
Now:
1) Show the LOCAL symmetry transformations:
(HINT: one will be reparametrization, the other will be weyl transformations)
2) Compute the energy momentum tensor Tαβ defined by:
hαβ ⟶ hαβ + δhαβ ⇒ S ⟶ S + δS
δS = -T/2 ∫dσ2√h(σ)hαβ(σ)Tαβ
Which condition on Tαβ does invariance under Weyl transformation imply?
(see...we're not even considering a space-time where the curvature tensor doesn't vanish, so you only have to deal with a flat geometry for space-time)
I don't have Latex on this computer, so I had to do it with the damned "special characters" on the mac fonts. You can reply with latex or post a scan of your scratch work if it's easier.
Good luck on your dissertation! I don't know why you chose Heterotic string theory, but I guess you have to go with what you're interested in.

Isaac Asimov never considered himself smart, just considered himself an expert at what he does. Knowing the equations above doesn't make you smart, it just means you understand string theory. Asimov also said he wouldn't consider himself any smarter than an auto mechanic because he is not dumb enough to try and fix his own car.
Intelligence is all relative to what you do.

Big Daddy Langan
The beef
I'm not impressed. He claims to have an IQ higher than Einstein, but I've never even heard of him.
Shit, I could sit around for a few hours and brag about how smart I am, but it doesn't put an accomplishment in my pocket.

High IQ doesn't necessarily mean you will do something with it. For example Marilyn Vos Savant's biggest accomplishment is creating the numbriz puzzle. Chris Langan wrote some bullshit indespicable quasi scientific paper he likes to call the "Cognitive-Theoretic Model of the Universe" which no scientists takes seriously. High IQ merely shows your ability to solve patterns.
Like Steven Hawking said; "people bragging over high IQ are retards"
