Title: Personal Trainers: Smart or stupid move?
Post by: uberman09 on October 07, 2009, 02:13:10 PM
Why have a personal trainer when everything you need , all the info is free on the internet...

The irony is most of those who pay for Personal trainers are the ones who quit the most when the self-taughts are the most consistent and fast to understand the basics and make progresses..

Like you need a pt to teach you how to curl, sit on a machine or even do bench press. Like you cant use the gym's equipment cause you need someone to teach you how to use it ... ::) Oh yeah, "reps" and "sets" are very complex concepts to assimilate too....

If you cant get yourself to lift weights or lose weights doing some cardio you re never ever going to achieve anything.

Godamn motherfuckings morons.

Pts dont even pretend they care about the customers either, i saw this young #### with no muscle at all laugh frantically with despise at his "customer" while hurling a big ball in his face while he was doing some push up on the floor.. It's like the pts do everything to make their "customers"  look stupid in front of the others gym members.

poor newbies , they put trust in these trainers with shit "certifications" that mean nothing ... who laugh at them hanging and joking with the gymrats instead of at leat trying to do their "job" correctly. In fact i sometimes wonder if they dont create the most stupid and shameful "programs" and "exercises" to torture their "customers".

Agreed.  :D When my mom started going to a commercial gym all she got was some lousy program and a recommendation to buy protein (she bought a big bag  ::)), which is completely useless since she is just trying to lose weight.  ::)

ehhhhh, i kinda disagree. other than the case of professional athletes whose lives depend on their athletic abilities and their bodies, i think for everyone else (normal folks) hiring a PT is a desperation move. To me, a PT is like a prostitute, a "Paid Friend". Sure they both offer "services", but in all honesty, you hire them out of desperation. by hiring a PT, they then think they are "healthy/athletic" but in reality they are just plain stupid... just like hiring a prostitue... banging a prostitute doesnt make you a player, sure you get laid, but in the end your still a loser...

eeer, looks like you dint understand i was saying eactly th same thing you say lol
Of course most newbies are getting owned by these "personal trainers".

in fact as soon as the newbies pay for their membership fee, it's like if they re just here to be laughed at by the guys who know what they re doing here.
And i almost never see any "pt" or gym staff members trying to help these poor sobs if they didnt pay for "programs".

This is really a nasty industry with nasty scornful and egocentricals people everywhere you look at from top to botom.

Customers need to get a fucking clue and stop paying for being molested by gyms staffs when it pleases em.

its like going to the mechanic cause you have some problems with your engine, and once there the employee throw a wrench at your face and tells you to do it yourself now you're there.

not everyone has the time to do the research on the internet

however, i will agree that PT's are pretty much paid friends/therapists

If you have time to go to the gym, you have time to "do research on the internet."

The reality is most people need help getting started.  For many of us this comes in the form of a friend who shows you the ropes in the gym; everyone needs a muscle mentor.  If you don't have that gym friend, a PT can be very useful.  Remember, going into almost any gym is second nature to us, but to the newcomer a gym can be a very intimidating place.  :-\  I am always friendly to new people at the gym (especially if they are fat) for that very reason.

logical thinking would make you think this but many people come in clueless.

I'll say this- alot of college age girls know their shit cuz magazines like "SHAPE" do a good job of keeping their readers "up to date" which is ironic cuz their idea of "up to date" is teaching them how to do burpee's which is a exercise my uncles used to do back in the military.

based on what i see in the gym, many people need some body or something (the net) to teach them how to lift weights, i'm always amazed how people can't do lat pulldowns or tricep pressdowns

it seems the PT's rarely have their clients lift weights, they mostly watch them do jumping jacks and text as the client jogs or walks around the track

all weight lifting involves cables or those exercise balls

the adult clients seem to be the submissive type that likes being bossed around, the teenage clients are nerds with parents that have money to throw away

honestly you guys would be suprised at how uninformed the average person is about nutrition and exercise. I was a pt for a while and it was absolutely amazing how ignorant some ppl were.

Also pt's provide accountability to ppl who would otherwise skip a workout or eat like shit...

also guys im sure those who have trained long enough know that there are tons of different theories for exercise and many of them very conflicting especially these days with a new exercise routine coming out everyday or a new diet...

take it easy on the noobs they keep the gym memberships cheap

I have never been a PT but my observations at various gyms that I've belonged to have led me to think that many PTs prey on the ignorance of inexperienced clients and feed their fears about working out "incorrectly" in order to get the client to keep paying them week after week.  I go to a Gold's in western Massachusetts and have never once witnessed a PT showing a client how to do a freeweight squat, bench, or deadlift.  Seen plenty of them showing their clients how to do one-armed curls while balancing on a BOSU or needlessly micromanaging every aspect of their workout to make it as complicated as possible, and thus as difficult as possible for the client to do it on their own without the PT.  Like yesterday the twink head PT at my gym was having a client do pushups, nothing wrong with that, yet barking instructions the entire time.  "Tilt your head up, down a little bit more, there it is.  Move your hands in and back a little, not that far, up a little more..."  Fuck man just let the dude do a pushup, it's not rocket science.

In closing I'm sure there are good PTs out there who genuinely want to help people lead healthier, fitter lives, but I think a great many of them are in it because it's a cake job that requires little actual training or intelligence, and couldn't care less about actually helping someone improve their fitness.

you got it all right.  In fact the gym managers tell the PTs to fool new customers as much as they can and that they must try to sell them as many useless side products or programmes as possible.  It's all about making money , and it's really low.

Many many many trainers do try and keep clients coming back ive never seen one intentionally tell a client to do an exercise wrong though. I have seem some trainers have their clients do some crazy ass shit though.

My pitch was always to explain to them that my goal was to educate them to the point that they could go and exercise efficiently on their own. Problem is without a trainer there most ppl have no accountability and will slack off I would say one of the biggest parts of being a trainer is holding your clients accountable. Most repeat clients dont come back for the exercise advice etc...its simply for the accountability and as others have said they form a personal relationship with their trainer.

I think getting help from a PT at first is a good idea. But I'm sure regular PT's abuse the system and don't teach the clients appropriattely / or make them do weird exercises that absolutely necessitate the presence of a PT. I don't think most people start out correctly, because beginners never have a good idea for what a starting point for them is. For example, most people will start out doing a traditional bodybuilding split which is the last regimen anyone should start out doing. Also, core exercises like squats and deadlifts take some time for the beginner to master. having a trainer around to teach u these things (assuming he's a good trainer) will raise the learning curve tremendously and save you a lot of time and hassle. So I would be in favor of getting a [good] PT to begin working out.

If someone wants to pay you to hold them accountable, then at least establish that fact and enjoy the money.

I am a strength coach but I am there to motivate athletes - they get there at 6:30 and have a set program for that season we develop then they must be supervised and sometimes have to make there strength mark

now working with general public -- I mostly train women -- cause they either want to gain weight or tone up - I train only active women who have very demanding jobs -- they tell me the most they like the MOTIVATION I give them after traveling, putting up with their kids and ex-husbands shit all day - then they come see me and we get it dun

but mostly people hire me to write diets - which yes you can do on your own - BUT they ALWAYS have questions like if I left apples off the list of fruits/veggies if they can eat them --

remember the #1 reason people dont workout or use a gym is LACK OF EXPERIENCE - so it makes sense why a trainer would help SOME people out

but hell yea I mostly feel like someone these ladies tote around the gym and dont mind being seen with working out -- and I make em sweat - but I'm like the big guy you bring to the club so all the guys dont hit on you but in the gym when I train some of these women

There are personal trainers and then there are personal trainers.

Of course, unless you have some sort of legitimate degree, regarding exercise and nutrition, you are (for all practical purposes) a maid/janitor in a weight room. I know that firsthand from my summer job at Bally back in 1995.

I'd love to be a PT at a high end club where the lonely hot houswives come to visit. Make some extra cash on the side.

That's what I thought. But the manager put me in the free weight room, because I was the only one strong enough to put all the dumbbells back in their proper place. He also wanted me to keep people from bringing their bags where the weights were, as people were stealing the collars and the 5 and 10-lb plates.

Honest to God where do you people come up with this dribble?

Honest to God where do you people come up with this dribble?

This "dribble" comes from firsthand experience. I applied for a job as a personal trainer at Bally, back in 1995. They were supposed to send me to their crash course in personal training, about 2-3 weeks after I got hired.

But the class got postponed and by the time it was re-scheduled, it was time for me to return to school. Guess what I did in the meantime: CLEAN UP THE WEIGHT ROOM!!

Guess what the other folks, who had already taken that course, did during slow/medium hours: CLEAN UP THE GYM FLOOR!!

90% of all people are retarded and lack common sense. Always assume that about people and you will never be disappointed.

I called it "dribble" because you made a blanket statement and that's just not so. There are PLENTY of good trainers without degrees. Its great to have degree but it doesn't mean shit unless you know how to apply it. The problem is that VERY FEW know how to put an effective program together.

How likely is it for a beginner to find a really good trainer when first starting out? It's almost impossible for a beginner to know where to look for one. So many trainers and so few who really know their shit. Only by pure luck can he find a really good one when he really needs it - in the very beginning.

Again, he made sound like a blanket statement.

This. I look at it not as people paying me to count reps, or be their 'friend" but for the programming. I have knowledge and skills that they dont, same as a mechanic, doctor, etc.

Way true, I mean they can waste their money if they want, but they would be better off reading for about 30 mins on the net about nutrition and watching a couple of youtubes about form with certain excercises, and in that time developing some sense of autonomy over themselves so that they don;t feel they have to rely on some out of shape guy with a certificate. The goddamn motherfucking morons bit was funny as Hel haha!

I didn't say there weren't good trainers without degrees. But, without one, in certain places (i.e. Bally) you are indeed a maid/janitor in a weight room. I knew more about training and nutrition than most of the guys there. But, I ended up cleaning the weight room.

Yeah right, like it was Goodall. We should all know by now that Al Sharpton is the new commissioner of the NFL. He obviosly has that right since 70% of the players are black. Who's the racist now? Sure as hell isn't Rush!
