Personal Trainers: Smart or stupid move?
« on: October 07, 2009, 02:13:10 PM »
Why have a personal trainer when everything you need , all the info is free on the internet...

The irony is most of those who pay for Personal trainers are the ones who quit the most when the self-taughts are the most consistent and fast to understand the basics and make progresses..

Like you need a pt to teach you how to curl, sit on a machine or even do bench press. Like you cant use the gym's equipment cause you need someone to teach you how to use it ... ::) Oh yeah, "reps" and "sets" are very complex concepts to assimilate too....

If you cant get yourself to lift weights or lose weights doing some cardio you re never ever going to achieve anything.

Godamn motherfuckings morons.

Pts dont even pretend they care about the customers either, i saw this young #### with no muscle at all laugh frantically with despise at his "customer" while hurling a big ball in his face while he was doing some push up on the floor.. It's like the pts do everything to make their "customers"  look stupid in front of the others gym members.

poor newbies , they put trust in these trainers with shit "certifications" that mean nothing ... who laugh at them hanging and joking with the gymrats instead of at leat trying to do their "job" correctly. In fact i sometimes wonder if they dont create the most stupid and shameful "programs" and "exercises" to torture their "customers".

Agreed.  :D When my mom started going to a commercial gym all she got was some lousy program and a recommendation to buy protein (she bought a big bag  ::)), which is completely useless since she is just trying to lose weight.  ::)

ehhhhh, i kinda disagree. other than the case of professional athletes whose lives depend on their athletic abilities and their bodies, i think for everyone else (normal folks) hiring a PT is a desperation move. To me, a PT is like a prostitute, a "Paid Friend". Sure they both offer "services", but in all honesty, you hire them out of desperation. by hiring a PT, they then think they are "healthy/athletic" but in reality they are just plain stupid... just like hiring a prostitue... banging a prostitute doesnt make you a player, sure you get laid, but in the end your still a loser...

eeer, looks like you dint understand i was saying eactly th same thing you say lol
Of course most newbies are getting owned by these "personal trainers".

in fact as soon as the newbies pay for their membership fee, it's like if they re just here to be laughed at by the guys who know what they re doing here.
And i almost never see any "pt" or gym staff members trying to help these poor sobs if they didnt pay for "programs".

This is really a nasty industry with nasty scornful and egocentricals people everywhere you look at from top to botom.

Customers need to get a fucking clue and stop paying for being molested by gyms staffs when it pleases em.

its like going to the mechanic cause you have some problems with your engine, and once there the employee throw a wrench at your face and tells you to do it yourself now you're there.

not everyone has the time to do the research on the internet

however, i will agree that PT's are pretty much paid friends/therapists

If you have time to go to the gym, you have time to "do research on the internet."

The reality is most people need help getting started.  For many of us this comes in the form of a friend who shows you the ropes in the gym; everyone needs a muscle mentor.  If you don't have that gym friend, a PT can be very useful.  Remember, going into almost any gym is second nature to us, but to the newcomer a gym can be a very intimidating place.  :-\  I am always friendly to new people at the gym (especially if they are fat) for that very reason.

logical thinking would make you think this but many people come in clueless.

I'll say this- alot of college age girls know their shit cuz magazines like "SHAPE" do a good job of keeping their readers "up to date" which is ironic cuz their idea of "up to date" is teaching them how to do burpee's which is a exercise my uncles used to do back in the military.

i can see getting a pt for two weeks tops when you first encounter  the gym enviroment  after that it's pretty much a waste.

I'd love to be a PT at a high end club where the lonely hot houswives come to visit. Make some extra cash on the side.

How stupid do you have to be to think you're better than a good trainer?

based on what i see in the gym, many people need some body or something (the net) to teach them how to lift weights, i'm always amazed how people can't do lat pulldowns or tricep pressdowns

it seems the PT's rarely have their clients lift weights, they mostly watch them do jumping jacks and text as the client jogs or walks around the track

all weight lifting involves cables or those exercise balls

the adult clients seem to be the submissive type that likes being bossed around, the teenage clients are nerds with parents that have money to throw away

honestly you guys would be suprised at how uninformed the average person is about nutrition and exercise. I was a pt for a while and it was absolutely amazing how ignorant some ppl were.

Also pt's provide accountability to ppl who would otherwise skip a workout or eat like shit...

also guys im sure those who have trained long enough know that there are tons of different theories for exercise and many of them very conflicting especially these days with a new exercise routine coming out everyday or a new diet...

take it easy on the noobs they keep the gym memberships cheap

nowadays Most PT in gym chains cant speak about nutrition, they have people called nutritionists to do it!
gives jobs to people somehow...

i love it when a pure ectomorphic "nutritionist"  explain to a poor fat insecure girl how to lose weight...doing cardio and eating this and this in front of all the usual gym crowd.
Like she knows what its all about when she never ever got fat in the first place anyway due to her genetics.
You usually dont see the fat customer come back again after the first humiliation.

I have never been a PT but my observations at various gyms that I've belonged to have led me to think that many PTs prey on the ignorance of inexperienced clients and feed their fears about working out "incorrectly" in order to get the client to keep paying them week after week.  I go to a Gold's in western Massachusetts and have never once witnessed a PT showing a client how to do a freeweight squat, bench, or deadlift.  Seen plenty of them showing their clients how to do one-armed curls while balancing on a BOSU or needlessly micromanaging every aspect of their workout to make it as complicated as possible, and thus as difficult as possible for the client to do it on their own without the PT.  Like yesterday the twink head PT at my gym was having a client do pushups, nothing wrong with that, yet barking instructions the entire time.  "Tilt your head up, down a little bit more, there it is.  Move your hands in and back a little, not that far, up a little more..."  Fuck man just let the dude do a pushup, it's not rocket science.

In closing I'm sure there are good PTs out there who genuinely want to help people lead healthier, fitter lives, but I think a great many of them are in it because it's a cake job that requires little actual training or intelligence, and couldn't care less about actually helping someone improve their fitness.

you got it all right.  In fact the gym managers tell the PTs to fool new customers as much as they can and that they must try to sell them as many useless side products or programmes as possible.  It's all about making money , and it's really low.

LOL ill agree that the majority of trainers are pretty much worthless but my point is the position itself serves a valuable purpose. Dont blame the shitty trainers for giving the profession a bad name the profession is needed.
