Health insurance industry trade groups opposed to President Obama's health care reform bill are paying Facebook users fake money -- called "virtual currency" -- to send letters to Congress protesting the bill.
Here's how it's happening:
Facebook users play a social game, like "FarmVille" or "Friends For Sale." They get addicted to it. Eager to accelerate their progress inside the game, the gamers buy "virtual goods" such as a machine gun for "Mafia Wars." But these gamers don't buy these virtual goods with real money. They use virtual currency.
The gamers get virtual currency three ways:
-- Winning it playing the games
-- Paying for it with real money
-- By accepting offers from third-parties -- usually companies like online movie rentals service Netflix -- who agree to give the gamer virtual currency so long as that gamer agrees to try a product or service. This is done through an "offers" provider -- a middleman that brings the companies like Netflix, the Facebook gamemakers, and the Facebook gamemaker's users together.
It's this third method that an anti-reform group called "Get Health Reform Right" is using to pay gamers virtual currency for their support.

SO WHAT?
You have a dictator and his communist mob trying to put them out of business. Should they just sit down and take it?
Fuck that! People are not taking this anymore and are starting to fight back against this marxist revolution.
-
Thats great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!IF oBAMA CAN USE acorn THEN EVERYTHING IS OK.
-
haha it means people can't shit on acorn shitbags any more. goodbye moral high horse. both sides playing dirty politics, and there is no denying it.

About time, fight fire with fire.
-
About time, fight fire with fire.
I agree and if the republicans ever get back in power, they can start investigating ACORN,the EPA,all those agencies that try to steal our liberty. They should get dirty just like the democrats.
-
okay. but understand - ANY TIME you criticize acorn now, all we have to say is "They're just trying to keep up with health care companies paying facebook kids in farmville dollars to spam their family about health care bill.
And at that point, your only argument will be "well, acorn was caught FIRST".
it's a slippery slope. Your side is now a big piece of shit cheater and liar, just like acorn. Pass the crap sandwich - your side is eating from the same menu now :(
-

240 - read my thread about the health bill. Give me a real answer and not spin and you tell me how this mess ends.
-
a real answer to what Q? You know i dont support the bill, what else do ya wanna know? lol

If you cant see the differance between a private company or companies protecting their buisiness interest and a federally funded volunteer organsisation then I dont know what to say.ACORN uses MY tax money to pervert the political process and get fools ass community organisers elected. They work like unions who STEAL money from the workers and redistribute it to political parties. There is ZERO comparrison.
-
they're both crooked fvckers.
to defend either shows a major lack of integrity.
you're debating which is more crooked.... give it a break... you do the right thing, or you're a piece of shit. In this case, both sides are pieces of shit.
-
240 so very true. 333 and Billy however, will fight to the bitter end on this. 333 especially. He has little mental sanity left (he believes the Copenhagen meetings are going to result in a NWO of some sorts) you can't honestly expect him to see in the correct light. Besides it's really no surprise he is as he is. After agreeing with this he can no longer complain about GS or GE lobbying govt and the white house without being hypocritical.

If some dirtbag in govt was trying to put me out of business for no good reason, you dont think I have the right to defend my business?
Who the hell do you think you are?

Pure Horse Shit 240!
Insurance uses their money, and Acorn uses Our Money (Our Tax Dollars given to them by the Government)
Even you should see the difference.
-
well it's worse beacuse it's our tax $, I'll give ya that...
but it's like we're comparing a rapist to a murderer at this point. Both dems and repubs cheating... dems just using our $ to do it.
-
240,
I really don't see the difference between this and an insurance company using tv advertisements to get there message out.
It's their money, their advertising call, their decision. So what? How that makes them "close" to being as bad as ACORN, I just don't get.
-

240, If you truly believe they are same, or "one is worse than the other" then you are not the person I thought you were.
What if the Government wanted to get in the Website Building Business, and to promote this, they were using your tax dollars, to give to Acorn, to help promote this. In essence, using your money, to put you out of Business.
You on the other hand were using your own money and time to fight back.
Do you honestly think it is the same thing ?
-
240 probably does not think Obama will ever come for his business.
-
240 probably does not think Obama will ever come for his business.
fixed.
-
I conceded it was worse.
-
I conceded it was worse.
One is trying to protect its business, the other is trying to destroy business.
The two are not remotely the same.
-
sorry, but if it's 1% wrong (which you and BILLY both admitted it was dirty tactics), I don't give it respect.
-

No. i dont agree that dirty tactics are wrong in a case like this.
-
"No. i dont agree that dirty tactics are wrong in a case like this. "
because you agree with the goal they have?
Sorry, IMO this bullshit tactics from both sides turns me off. I voted libertarian in 08, as you well know, and I sure wouldn't want the libertarian candidate putting out lies about the D or the R.

These companies are fighting against someone who wants to shut them down.
What would you do?
-
::) are you out of your freaking mind? "So what?" This shit should be illegal. Would you be ok if I started giving away meals in the poorest areas in exchange for them writting letters to congress in support of obamacare? don't tell me there's a difference, virtual currency obviously has a $ value.
I could care less what you do with your own money, time and resources.
If you start coming after my business and livlihood, its all out war and I will do anything and everything within legal bounds to defeat threats to my livihood.
I dont know why insurance companies, car companies, and anyone who makes a buck all of a sudden is supposed to be a willing pinata and just take this crap sitting down.
-
I certainly don't want to waste all of our time debating whether their unethical behavior was justified or not. I concede it's worse acorn uses taxpayer $. And I sure concede I'd be using the same tactics if I was the CEO of Aetna and Obama was trying to shit on my parade.
Re-read my original post. I simply stated if you support this, you have to get off the moral high horse, as you're using unethical practices too. Justify it any way you please - hell, I admit I'd be doing it too in Aetna's shoes. But that CEO can't sit on a high horse anymore, that's all. I don't have a high horse lol... I dont blame them for trying to shut down what I think is a shitty bill. I'm tired of being called a lib or whatever because I analyze things politically.
-
you can't take what one organization unethically does and use it to fucking justify it as right for your team. It's a quick spiral to a pile-o-shit where nobody gives a fuck. It's wrong wrong wrong and I can't support a lousy opinion that says you'd do it too or it's ok because they did it too ::)
sad state of affairs when to not be considered a lib you have to make retarded posts.
politics is war wo bullets

Well, after reading Hugo's post, I read the article thoroughly. I was thinking they were just paying for advertising. But, having people push letters out to their congresspeople...meh, not so thrilled with that. Something like that could result in congress getting a biased impression on what people want (even though I think most aren't thrilled with the bill anyway).
So, I'll have to reconsider my stance. But, if the insurance companies just advertise against the bill, then I wouldn't have a problem with that.

Whats the alternative? A govt law, agency, regulation banning this?
That to me is horrific compared to this.
-
it's not illegal what they're doing, and ALL of us would do it if we were running aetna.
it's just that the prez of aetna - or anyone supporting this bill - can't claim to be any authority on ethics after paying people to write their congressmen.

240 they are accused of murdering people every day. Do you really think they are going to claim to a higher ethical authority?

I'm not sure. I've seen something similar with Unions offering perks to members who wrote letters. I wasn't too thrilled with that either. I suppose an argument could be made that Unions and Corporations have 1st amendment rights and this is just an extension, but where do you draw the line. A powerful Union or corporation can have really, really deep pockets.

Im a huge free speech advocate and think the givt has no business regulating or infringing on any policial speech. As it stands corps are considered people for those purposes.
I really have no problem with this since no one was forced to to do this. If they felt that the letter was against their personal beliefs they didnt have to send it.
-
"240 they are accused of murdering people every day. Do you really think they are going to claim to a higher ethical authority"
Hey, if the piece-o-shite left is going to make up lies about them, that's what you expect from the piece-o-shit left. Sinking to their level doesn't make them correct. It just means they become pieces-of-shite too.
I find the behaviour inexcusable - corrupting our democratic system by flooding letters for play money.
it has nothing to do with Acorn, who is also disgusting bcause they use our tax $ to fvk us. You can always excuse any murderer because "Bundy killed WAY more than that", but it doesn't make it right. I call for high standards from ALL parties - you with me? :)

ha ha. liking asking fat girl to put down cake, never happening.

I think EVERY politician or "expert" should have to face an hour of questions from opponents, while wearing a polygraph on display right next to them.
Anyone who refuses this shouldn't get any air time.
You'd have Ron Paul sitting next to Peter Schiff in the presidential debate... everyone else woudl be too scared to show up.
-
333, others, by supporting this you're effectively giving up any stock you had to bitch when the other side pulls this shit. You're taking the eye for and eye, shit happens, this is war stance. So when the next lefty scandal happens, I expect the only thing you'll be saying is, "oh well, to bad we didn't think of that one"
No, I think there has to be some middle ground. Unions, corporations, organizations...all have a right to free speech too. So the real issue for me is at what point is that free speech usurping the democratic process. Quietly paying people to write letters is definitely pushing the envelope.
-
haha it means people can't shit on acorn shitbags any more. goodbye moral high horse. both sides playing dirty politics, and there is no denying it.
actually numb nut this had nothing to do with the republican party as accorn does with the dems....
nice try...
the reps and dems are both in bed with health insurers...only dems in bed with accorn ::)
more double standards from you 240, cover up bro your liberals showing
-
the only part I'm talking about is the buying of opinions, of course Unions, corporations, organizations should have a voice... this is a method that disenfranchises individuals, not a voice.
Hugo - you seem like a good guy, but bro, you have no clue how bad things really are. In 2000 I was a poll watcher in the Bronx when Hillary ran.
I witnessed this myself!
The democrats literally went into nursing homes and got people who were comatose, not even knowing what day it was, and brought voting machines in the nursing homes to get these people to vote for Hillary.
They also set up soup & coffee tables 200o feet from the voting place with hillary shit.
Are you upset at that?
-

I see people robbing banks and murding people on tru-TV all the time. So I guess that makes it ok for me to do ::) I've been all over the fucking world, I'm older than you, I've probably been engaged/interested in politics longer than you, don't tell me I don't have a clue. Wrong is wrong dummy. You don't make it a right because the other side has done it ::) These are basics drilled into people who grew up out here, I don't know what the fuck you were taught out east...

I am not offended by this stuff because i know it always goes on, always will go on, and there is nothing you can do to stop it. It is what it is.
To me, if both sides play dirty, fine. If you both sides play clean, fine.
However, history tells us that in most likelihood we will more often than not end up with both sides engaged in blood sport.
Im totally ok with that.
-

Please.
Come on.
So just because some acorn employes act like idiots it somehow makes this ok?
BTW, when did this become a "your side and mine side" kind of thing?
You really try to simplify things, aren't you?
-

They are funded by tax dollars and advocate breaking the law.
Nothing of the sort happened here. Stop triyng to equivocate two things that are not related.

no you're not, you're a fucking hypocrite. Don't tell me you're ok with it when you've bitched about the other side on similar issues. If you were ok with it, you'd just say, oh shit, nicely played, we should do that next time. You're full of shit, you're reaching for excuses so you can support it when it's in your favor. You've lost all stock in bitching next time it's not in your favor. I guess you'll just be ok with it. Again, wrong is wrong dummy. You just cannot say it's ok or ok to look the other way because it happens. ::) You're dead ass wrong on this.
Lets just say 2000 people wrote letters to their reps for obamacare and 1000 people wrote letters against. Then Company X comes along and buys people for an additional 2000 against Obamacare for a total of 3000 against and 2000 for. You don't see a problem with all the people who wrote sincere letters to their reps essentially having them nullified by bought opinions? You don't have a problem with one of the most core ways our system works manipulated like that essentially rendering the whole point of our representative system dead in this case? It's wrong no matter what side does it. The thing to do is to condemn it no matter who does it, but hey, as long as we have people like you and billy thrilled to death about it as long as it is in your/their favor.... ::) unethical morons.

Bro - WTF are you talking about?
This goes on every day, everywhere, on every issue.
The left has its rent-a-mobs for every protest.
The AARP head is a Obama personal buddy. The AARP sends out all sorts of shit that many of its members disagree with and try to make it as if all of the elderly are in favor of ObamaCare. Same with the AMA, BAR Association, etc.
The Unions do it by funneling campaign cash to pols that probavbly 30 -50% of the members dont agree with.
I dont see where this company did anything wrong at all.
If they sent out letters in these peoples' names without their permission, I have a problem with that.
And besides the point, what is your answer to this? A law? a regulation? a govt agency?
-

Oh really?
1. Accusing carriers of murder.
2. Sending people to the homes of AIG employees.
3. Guns at Campaign events
4. SEIU goons beating people up.
5. Reps. telling formers VP's STFU
The level fo discourse is going to get far worse once the amnesty and crap & tax thing heats up.
