The healthcare package now contains a 10% tax on indoor tanning.
Owners are worried. They say they'll lose customers if they have to raise prices.
"These taxes go against what our president said he was going to do -- not taxing anyone who makes less than $250,000. All of these taxes hit the majority of people," one tanning salon owner tells KY3 News.
Also, they say, the tax targets women - one third of whom visit tanning beds before they turn thirty.
Still, many others support the tax. “It will cost the government more money to care for these people who tanned decades ago,” said Dr. Raffaele Pennela, a dermatologist for St. John’s Health System.
But don't worry, cash strapped indoor tanners. The tax only applies to cancer-causing fake n' baking. Spray Tanning is exempt.

Good. Tanning beds have PROVEN that if you use them, you will have a higher chance of cancer. This is a fiscally responsible tax, it's taxing those that are most likely to use and need future cancer treatments. This is what happens with cigarettes and i have no issue with it being applied to tanning salons.

Oh please. If you work on a 10% margin and can't pass on a 10% cost which equates to a real cost of about $3.5 to the consumer on the higher end (15 sessions run around $35 at a lot of places) then your business was destined to fail and that's the hard reality.

the idea that the government thinks they need to put higher taxes on things that may or may not lead to need for healthcare is leading strait into socialism , lets say for example there are 100,000 tanning beds in the u.s. the 10% raise is almost 3 part time employees monthly earnings, so if a business owner can make that 10% back up by letting 2 of those three people go that means 200,000 people just lost their job and now depend on the government just like the government wants, oh and kc as a teenager i managed a couple of tanning salons and i know what there margins are and people will get let go over 10% percent extra tax.....

Doctors were able to surgically remove the so-called Botax from the Senate's health-care overhaul bill and replace it with a 10% tax on tanning services.
"We suggested that the tanning tax would be a better alternative to the cosmetic tax and hopefully will reduce the incidence of skin cancer down the road," said David M. Pariser, president of the American Academy of Dermatology Association, which represents dermatologists.
The American Medical Association had also opposed the proposed 5% tax on cosmetic procedures -- dubbed the Botax after the antiwrinkle product Botox -- which was among the issues it wanted changed by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. After that change and others were made over the weekend, the AMA announced its support Monday for the Senate bill.
A spokesman for Mr. Reid said in an email the tanning tax was "on the table for a while" before the Botax was proposed several weeks ago.
An industry spokesman said U.S. tanning businesses were unlikely to earn enough to provide the government with the roughly $2.7 billion over 10 years envisioned by the congressional Joint Committee on Taxation. The Botax was expected to generate an estimated $5.8 billion.
There are an estimated 20,000 tanning salons in the U.S., mostly stand-alone shops, and it's impossible to know what total revenue figures are for the industry, said Dan Humiston, president of the Indoor Tanning Association. "It's almost laughable" to think the tanning industry's revenue adds up to what Congress is projecting, said Mr. Humiston, who owns a chain of 34 salons in upstate New York.
Mr. Humiston added that salons have been hit hard by the downturn, as middle-class customers cut back on spending. He said he has closed four shops since 2008, and has been discounting heavily to get customers. "Our industry is really beat up," he said. "And now, a 10% tax? Where are we going to get this?"
Mr. Humiston added the tax was a surprise. "We do have a lobbying presence in Washington," he said, "but not to the extent of the medical industry."
The tanning industry said Monday it was getting unfairly burned. But to dermatologists, the switch from a cosmetic tax to a tanning tax was a no-brainer. "Indoor tanning is a practice which is a known carcinogen," said the dermatologist group's Dr. Pariser.
For its part, the Indoor Tanning Association maintains that overexposure to any source of ultraviolet light, including sunlight, is potentially dangerous. Instead, the association promotes "responsible" tanning.

Creating a nanny state/country will have a negative economic effect. Just look to some of the European countries. We are on a path to remove us as an economic superpower.
It's noble (and necessary) to educate people on what is and isn't good for them, I do that every hour of the day and strongly support education...but I strongly oppose taxation and/or unequal treatment as a deterrant to a behavior. Positive reinforcement, yes, but not taxation as negative reinforcement. Weighing the harm of certain activities can be a very grey area.
Even though I love that we restricted smoking in most public areas I see where sin taxes opened the door for things that we are seeing now. Liberals have proposed other taxes like this (tax on pop)...and we'll probably see more of it We must preserve our freedoms.

The health reform bill passing through Congress may hold out the hope to 30 million Americans that they will at last be able to get medical insurance, but for another 30 million people it will mean more taxes: the frequenters of indoor tanning salons. In a last-minute change to the Senate bill that was agreed on Friday, a 10% tax was introduced into the legislation on all indoor tanning sessions as a way of reducing the cost of extending healthcare to many of the medically uninsured. Democratic organisers expect the levy to bring in almost $3bn over 10 years.
The move has angered owners of the 20,000 tanning salons that are thought to exist across America who protest this is additional punishment for an industry that is already suffering extreme pain as a result of the economic downturn.
Dan Humiston, president of the Indoor Tanning Association and the owner of 34 salons in New York state, said they was being picked upon. "Out of all industries you could chose, why the tanning industry? Because we're so wealthy? Because we're making so much money? From customers who pay $6 for a tan? No, it's because we're not going to fight back..."
The bulletin boards of tantoday.com, a web forum for salon owners, were full of irate posts. One said: "Thanks Obama for helping a family of 4 trying to get on track and plan for our kids future in a struggling economy after 5 years of personal financial struggles. Please no more help for us small business owners, I can't afford it!"...

Also, they say, the tax targets women - one third of whom visit tanning beds before they turn thirty.
Still, many others support the tax. “It will cost the government more money to care for these people who tanned decades ago,” said Dr. Raffaele Pennela, a dermatologist for St. John’s Health System.
But don't worry, cash strapped indoor tanners. The tax only applies to cancer-causing fake n' baking. Spray Tanning is exempt.

A new federal tax on indoor tanning services isn't bringing in as much revenue as hoped, a report says.
The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration said the IRS developed outreach plans to notify tanning salons the 10% federal tax would be due on ultraviolet light services paid for as of July 1, 2010.
But, while the agency also updated tax forms and tax return processing systems to prepare for the new levy, the IRS had difficulty determining the actual number and contacts for businesses required to collect the new tax from customers.

Using an April 2010 Indoor Tanning Association estimate, the IRS initially projected the tax would be due quarterly from roughly 25,000 stand-alone tanning salons, plus spas, health clubs and beauty parlors.
But the inspector general report found that actual tax returns filed for the first three quarters through March 31 averaged just above 10,300.
Tanning tax receipts for that nine-month period totaled $54.4 million, the report found. That was below projections by the Congressional Joint Committee on Taxation, which had estimated the tax would raise $50 million in the last three months of fiscal year 2010 and $200 million for the full 2011 fiscal year.
The report blamed the problem on the IRS' apparent use of incomplete information in its effort to identify taxpayers covered by the levy. It also said the IRS should have acted faster to collect. By the time notices were issued, tax returns had been due for three quarters.
"The IRS quickly implemented the tanning tax under a tight deadline," said J. Russell George, who heads the inspector general's office. "Since this was a brand new tax imposed on a group of businesses and taxpayers with no previous experience with excise taxes, the IRS should have done more to inform taxpayers of their filing responsibilities and bring them into compliance in a timely manner."
The inspector general's office recommended the IRS analyze the data sources it used for the tax, including records with incomplete address information, to determine whether some tanning businesses weren't notified about the levy. The agency should also determine whether other data sources are needed to identify tanning salons.
Agreeing with the recommendations, Faris Fink, head of the IRS Small Business/Self-Employed Division, wrote in a Sept. 7 response that the tax agency has "compared the list of taxpayers who have already filed returns with the broader list that we have collected, and have sent explanatory notices to businesses who have not yet filed."
"Once this analysis is complete, we will have a better sense of how many of the businesses who have not yet filed are actually subject to this new excise tax," Fink said.
