Man Attempts to Set Off Explosives on Detroit-Bound Airplane
Suspect Claims al Qaeda Terrorism Link, but FBI, Investigators Are Suspicious
By RICHARD ESPOSITO and SCOTT MAYEROWITZ
Dec. 25, 2009
Federal officials and police are interviewing a Nigerian man, who allegedly tried to "explode" a powdery substance aboard a Northwest flight from Amsterdam to Detroit, injuring himself and two other passengers, law enforcement officials said.
The man said he was directed by al Qaeda to explode a small device in flight, over U.S. soil, ABC News has learned. Authorities have no corroboration of that information, and the credibility of the suspect's statements are being questioned, officials said.
The suspect was identified as Abdul Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, who according to federal documents is an engineering student at University College of London.
He was flying from Nigeria to the United States for a religious ceremony, according to his entry visa, which was issued June 16, 2008 and was good until June 12, 2010.
The government had no immediate plans after the incident to raise the threat level, a federal government source said.
The suspect had been in a law enforcement-intelligence database but was not on the government's no-fly list, according to a law enforcement official.
"The subject is claiming to have extremist affiliation and that the device was acquired in Yemen along with instructions as to when it should be used," a federal situational awareness bulletin stated.

Delta spokeswoman Susan Chana Elliott said that "as the plane was getting ready to land" in Detroit "a passenger caused a disturbance" by trying to ignite what was initially reported to be firecrackers.
The man was "subdued immediately," Elliott said. Northwest is a wholly owned subsidiary of Delta.
The suspect told authorities that he had explosive powder taped to his leg and used a syringe of chemicals to mix with the powder that was to cause explosion. This is of concert because it is a method of mixing that is consistent with terror techniques.
Northwest Airlines flight 253 landed safely in Detroit at 11:53 a.m. The man, who flew from Nigeria to Amsterdam and then Detroit, was taken into custody at the Detroit airport and was interviewed by authorities there. He was then taken to an area hospital to be treated for burns.
An in-flight emergency was declared when a fire indicator light when on in the cockpit, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The pilot asked for airport rescue and firefighting services, and for law enforcement to meet the flight at gate, the TSA said.
It is unclear how powerful the explosive could have been and what the man's intentions were. Initial reports were that fireworks or firecrackers had gone off on the plane.
The man suffered second-degree burns, which is consistent with a small fireworks device, police sources said.
One of the passengers is being treated at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, according to hospital spokeswoman Tracy Justice, who was not sure if it was the suspect or one of the other passengers.
Man Tried to Ignite Explosives on Plane, Law Enforcement Says
Federal Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Sandra R. Berchtold from the Detroit office confirmed that the FBI was at the airport, but she would not comment further.
"All passengers have deplaned and out of an abundance of caution, the plane was moved to a remote area where the plane and all baggage are currently being rescreened," the Transportation Security Administration, which handles aircraft and airplane safety, said in a statement. "A passenger is in custody and passengers are being interviewed."
The aircraft was an Airbus A330-200, twin-engine jet carrying 278 passengers.
President Obama was notified of the incident by his military aide between 2 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Detroit time or 9 a.m. in Hawaii, where the Obamas are vacationing, according to White House spokesman Bill Burton.
The president subsequently convened a secure conference call with John Brennan, his Homeland Security and Counter-terrorism adviser, and Denis McDonough, acting chief of staff for the National Security Council.
Obama then instructed that "all appropriate measures be taken to increase security for air travel."
"The President is actively monitoring the situation and receiving regular updates. There is currently no change to his schedule," Burton said in a statement.
The Department of Homeland Security said Secretary Janet Napolitano has been briefed on the incident and is closely monitoring the situation.
The agency, which includes the TSA, said passengers may notice additional screening measures put into place to ensure the safety of the traveling public on domestic and international flights.
"As always we encourage the traveling public to be observant and aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious behavior or activity to law enforcement officials," the agency said in a statement.
Shortly after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Richard Reid, a British citizen and al Qaeda operative, tried to blow up an American Airlines flight from Paris to Miami with explosives hidden in his shoe.
Passengers on the flight complained of smelling smoke shortly after the meal service, and Reid was found trying to light a match. He was subdued by other passengers on the plane and the flight was diverted to Boston's Logan International Airport.
Reid, the so-called shoe bomber, pleaded guilty to terrorism charges in January 2003 and is serving a life sentence at a federal prison in Florence, Colo. His actions, in part, are why we must all now take off our shoes as part of the airport security screening process.
With reports from Matt Hosford, Pierre Thomas and Steven Portnoy.

Ex-Mossad official sees massive attack on U.S. homeland

Ex-Mossad official sees massive attack on U.S. homeland www.worldtribune.com
WASHINGTON Yuval Aviv, who predicted the Al Qaida strikes on London's mass transit system in 2005, said he believes Al Qaida was planning a series of mass-casualty strikes throughout the United States. Aviv said the most likely targets were places such as Disneyland, Las Vegas casinos, malls and subways.
"The attack will be characterized by simultaneous detonations around the country terrorists like big impact involving at least five to eight cities, including rural areas," Aviv, a former Mossad official said.
Aviv, responsible for the Israeli offensive against the Palestinian Liberation Organization in the early 1970s, said many of those sites designated by Al Qaida comprise easy targets. He said an Al Qaida agent could simply drive a car loaded with explosives into the parking lot of the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas and walk away.
Al Qaida does not plan suicide hijackings similar to its attacks on New York and Washington in 2001. Aviv said Al Qaida has determined that American passengers would immediately fight Islamist hijackers.
Instead, Al Qaida could bomb the entrance to the departure terminal of a major U.S. airport. Aviv, chief executive officer of the New York-based Interfor, cited the failure of airport authorities to check baggage before people enter the facility.
"It would be easy for someone to take two suitcases of explosives, walk up to a busy check-in line, ask a person next to them to watch their bags for a minute while they go to the restroom, and then detonate the bags before security even gets involved," Aviv said. "In Israel, security checks bags before people can even enter the airport."
Aviv, today a consultant to the U.S. Congress, said the federal government has been alerted to the prospect of a major Al Qaida strike. He said U.S. intelligence has determined that a likely source of a mass-casualty strike would be an American Muslim, particularly one who flew often to the Middle East.
"These young terrorists will be most dangerous because they will know our language and will fully understand the habits of Americans; but that we Americans won't know or understand a thing about them," Aviv said.

It was a jab at people like 240 who constantly try to convince me of a 9/11 CT saying Bush was out of the area and let it happen, etc etc. I guess that went over your head. Anyway, this is no amish granny who tried this.

Federal Officials and Rep. Peter King: Suspected Plane Bomber's Name is "Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab"

Rep. Peter King has named the suspected terrorist who attempted to blow up an Amsterdam to Detroit flight today as "Abdul Mudallad.", according to the AP in an article timestamped 7:04 p.m. EST.
King was just on live with CNN talking about the failed terrorist attack, but the CNN anchor cut King off when he started to say the suspect's name and would not allow King to name him. The anchor said CNN was not able to confirm the name.
King is the Ranking Member on the House Homeland Security Committee.
Citing federal officials, MSNBC is also naming the suspect, but uses a more complete version: "Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab".
MSNBC also reports Abdul Mutallab left Lagos, Nigeria yesterday and boarded flight 253 in Amsterdam today.

I love u guys...I also learned today that u aren't interrogating a shitbag if ur not an interrogator..u are conducting tactical questioning..which allows our guys to get what we need from the jihadi's before we turn em over to the Iraqi's. They then beat the tar out of them...PC bullshit sometimes works both ways. Peole like Blacken have their heads in the sand.

- Supposedly his father warned the US embassy that his son had been radicalized
- He was being watched for several weeks.

Yet, 80 year old white ladies are still getting frisked at air ports
Unbelievable.

well people are too god dam worried about being politicaly correct to actually take measures to stop things before hand, because someones lil rights may get violated boo fucking hoo, i would rather someone get sterio typed and profiled then see 200 people lose their lives because officials are being politicaly correct

I agree, even though a part of me thinks it not right, it is however, prudent and the reality of the times we live in. Islamic nut jobs aren't usually named Charles Williams.
-
Well i dont care what religion or race a person is, if there is suspicious questionable happening surrounding someone or a group they should have attention paid and if they wana cry profiling or sterio typing or whatever who cares, national security officials are paid to keep people safe, not be politicaly correct, and if people need to be pulled aside and questioned or investigated then fucking do it, its worth it if it saves lives

LOL this already happens to a much greater degree than people realise IMO. Especially following the years after 9/11 it was brutal for us to travel. I've been singled out for questioning both times I have traveled overseas to pakistan in the last two years... I sure didn't see any white people in those waiting lines ;)
Can't say I can really disagree with the policy but there are people who are strongly against this type of profiling.
-
i am white and i have been stoped in philly and dfw, sure its a hassle, but hey i would rather be hassled a lil then blown up in a high jacking, middle eastern people need to realize that when all you see are middle easterners blowing planes and buildings up that maybe america just might be more incline to suspect middle easterners,

well, conversely I would have my suspicions if my house in pakistan got bombed by a drone ;)

I got profiled because I looked like a guy who was wanted here for kidnapping (and I had my kid with me). it sucked being handcuffed while they ID'd me, but I understood it. There was a higher chance that a scruffy young man like myself was the kidnapper than say, a 70-year old woman. So I got profiled.
I'm betting 100% of the people who scream about it, and believe old ladies should receive as much scrutiny as young men, ARENT THE ONES ON THE PLANES!

I suppose there's some realities that muslims have to put up with in america. It's important to remember that not all muslims here are foreigners- they're born and bred american citizens.

if china had a number of terrorist attacks, and 90% of them were done by white folks, and i flew to china i wouldnt be offended if they hassled me, hell they are just trying to protect their people from the people that are obviously creating a problem for their country, if you ask me i think america should do more to weed out these people and if it offends people or the word gets out that the u.s. is being more strict, maybe it will detour some terrorists from even trying

Alleged Terrorist Known But Not Thought A Threat
by The Associated Press
December 27, 2009
The alleged Christmas Day terrorist had been in one of the U.S. government's many terror databases since November, which is when his father brought him to the attention of embassy officials in Nigeria.
However, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab came to the attention of intelligence officials months before that, according to a U.S. government official involved in the investigation. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because it is ongoing.
Still, none of the information the government had on Abdulmutallab rose to the level of putting him on the official terror watch list or no-fly list. On Christmas Eve, the 23-year-old Nigerian who later claimed to law enforcement that he was operating on orders from al-Qaida was able to carry a concealed explosive device onto a U.S.-bound airplane.
Officials warn it is still early in the investigation. But lawmakers are already calling for hearings, and the government may order a review. As President Barack Obama received regular updates on the investigation from his staff, his national security and policy aides have been asking whether the policies the U.S. has in place are working. These internal discussions marked the informal start to what will likely become a formal executive branch inquiry into an attack that failed because the bomb did not go off as planned and not because the intelligence community stopped it.
Passenger accounts and law enforcement officials describe the events around the Christmas Day attack this way:
On December 24, Abdulmutallab traveled from Nigeria to Amsterdam and then on to Detroit with an explosive device attached to his body.
Part of the device contained PETN, or pentaerythritol, and was hidden in a condom or condom-like bag just below Abdulmutallab's torso. PETN is the same material convicted shoe bomber Richard Reid used when he tried to destroy a trans-Atlantic flight in 2001 with explosives hidden in his shoes. Abdulmutallab also had a syringe filled with liquid.
As the plane approached Detroit, Abdulmutallab went to the bathroom for 20 minutes. When he returned to his seat, he complained of an upset stomach and covered himself with a blanket.
Passengers heard a popping noise, similar to a firecracker. They smelled an odor, and some passengers saw Abdulmutallab's pant leg and the wall of the airplane on fire. Passengers and the flight crew used blankets and fire extinguishers to quell the flames. They restrained Abdulmutallab, who later told a flight attendant he had an "explosive device" in his pocket. He was seen holding a partially melted syringe.
The airplane landed in Detroit shortly after the incident.
On Saturday, federal officials charged the young man with trying to destroy the airplane. A conviction on the charge could bring Abdulmutallab up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
U.S. District Judge Paul Borman read Abdulmutallab the charges in a conference room at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, Mich., where the former London university student is undergoing burn treatment. Abdulmutallab smiled as he was wheeled into the room, his left thumb and right wrist bandaged and part of the skin on the thumb was burned off.
Abdulmutallab claimed to have received training and instructions from al-Qaida operatives in Yemen, law enforcement officials said. He is also believed to have had Internet contact with militant Islamic radicals.
While intelligence officials said Saturday that they are taking seriously Abdulmutallab's claims that the plot originated with al-Qaida's network inside Yemen, several added that they had to yet to see independent confirmation. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is incomplete.
Four weeks ago, Abdulmutallab's father told the U.S. embassy in Abuja, Nigeria, that he was concerned about his son's religious beliefs. This information was passed on to U.S. intelligence officials.
Abdulmutallab received a valid U.S. visa in June 2008 that is good through 2010.
His is one of about 550,000 names in the Terrorist Identities Datamart Environment database, known as TIDE, which is maintained by the U.S. National Counterterrorism Center and was created in response to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Intelligence officials said they lacked enough information to place him in the 400,000-person terror watch list or on the no-fly list of fewer than 4,000 people who should be blocked from air travel.

My question is this: Howcome Cat Stevens (now Yusuf Islam) was on the no-fly list and this guy wasn't? That boggles my mind. It strongly hints at how incompetently this is being handled.
-
More govt incompetence to the Nth Degree.
Thank god for the white guy, AAGGAAIINN, who saved the other passengers from certain death by taking this savage animal down.
They should have opened the hatch and thrown him out the door.

wow.

wow.
Do you think some fat black lady was going to take this animal down?
How about some skinny little grandma?
How about some wimpish fag with flip flops on weighing 90lbs wet?
How about some little asian college girl?
How about some fat slob unable to get out of his seat?
If it wasnt for this guy, the average white guy, most likely 287 people would be dead.
Sorry, its the fucking truth. If we ever get to see the seating chart, I guaranty you most of the other passengers probably would never have been able to stop this savage beast.
-
Yeah shame on the Asian girl for not bulking up and shame on the gamma for not learning jujitsu and shame on the 90 pound whimp for not learning kung fu.
::)
-
wow.
also, unbelievable huh?
-
Yeah shame on the Asian girl for not bulking up and shame on the gamma for not learning jujitsu and shame on the 90 pound whimp for not learning kung fu.
::)
Yeah, it is. When you have crazed strong young males intent on killing you, and you are a 90lbs defenseless little chick or old lady, you are donezo.
Most people have zero ability to defend themselves from a physical attack.

Maybe they should a government program, spend billions, training 80 year olds to fight with carry on luggage.
Or make it illegal to weigh less than 150.
Or make it illegal not to know at least 3 moves in kung fu.
I so agree with you.
:D
-
what you really meant to say was that a black guy wouldn't have done it
Thank god for the white guy, AAGGAAIINN

So what do you think should be done? Should every one of those 500,000 people be barred from flying or traveling?

Make a joke about it if you like, but it is not a joke. Most people are completewly defensless against any type of attack whatsoever.
People need to understand that they are responsible for their own safety and the magical govt cop or protector wont be there when you need him.
When seconds count, the cops are only minutes away.
-
So what do you think should be done? Should every one of those 500,000 people be barred from flying or traveling?
How about they put 20 of them on the plane and you go on it? Feel good knowing that 20 of these people are on the place with you BF?
-

Congratulations to him for being male and white, I guess.
-
what you really meant to say was that a black guy wouldn't have done it
Thank god for the white guy, AAGGAAIINN
A black guy probably would try to help out. However, most likely there were not too many black males on this place considering the origination of the flight.
-
so instead of saying "A WHITE GUY" saved the day... maybe you could have said "A HEALTHY BRAVE MALE" saved the day?
-
How about they put 20 of them on the plane and you go on it? Feel good knowing that 20 of these people are on the place with you BF?
I think my opinion of Islam is well documented on here but let's be honest, unless you're willing to ban every single person on that list from flying or traveling then it's going to be almost impossible to stay on top of them. Especially if they're acting alone like this guy may have been.
-
Things are too black and white for him to say that.
-
so instead of saying "A WHITE GUY" saved the day... maybe you could have said "A HEALTHY BRAVE MALE" saved the day?
I put the white guy in there because DHS and the disgusting bull dyke that heads that agency issued a report saying white guys are the ones we need to be fearful from. If we can blame white guys for every evil in the world and make the public suspicious of them via DHS, it seems the least we can do is at least give some recognition when they do good deeds no?
-

If HLS or who ever was doing their jobs it would have never happened. But i do agree, seriously. I was making fun of the way you worded it from the start.

BF - this case is one so far that looks like there were ample warnings , just like Ft. Hood of this savage being a threat to society.
-
so instead of saying "A WHITE GUY" saved the day... maybe you could have said "A HEALTHY BRAVE MALE" saved the day?
exactly, his color had nothing to do with it
-
It is cool though, I always knew if someone tried something on a US plane this would happen. Thank goodness they stopped him.
How long do you think its gonna be before some group mistakenly assaults someone on a plane and they sued for it?
-
BF - this case is one so far that looks like there were ample warnings , just like Ft. Hood of this savage being a threat to society.
There are millions of extremists out there, though. It's not like this guy had been traveling back and forth from Pakistan for a while or posting jihadist videos on the internet.
-

No kidding.
However, the point of this is that the govt is not doing its job and if you are on a plane and see shit like this, dont wait - attack. Your life depends on it.
This guy fit the exact profile of someone with no business on a plane whatsoever.
-
There are millions of extremists out there, though. It's not like this guy had been traveling back and forth from Pakistan for a while or posting jihadist videos on the internet.
His father warned the authorities.
He paid cash for a one way ticket.
He was on the list.
He was previously denied a US Visa
He was going to yemen with this imam or some crap.
Thats so far from what I can tell.
-
So what's your solution? Ban anyone who checks any of those terrorist boxes from flying?
Personally, I think it's impossible to account for every potential terrorist.
-

Than dont complain the next time we have a 911 again if we are unwilling to protect ourselves from these monsters who actively seek to exploit our weaknesses.

Haha, don't try to paint me as the bad guy. I think we need better security measures at the airports and things like those full body x rays. I don't give a shit how invasive it is. There's no explanation for someone getting that shit on a plane when it's taped to their leg. I'll gladly walk through a full body x-ray if it ensures that I'm not going to get blown up 37,000 feet in the air.
I do, however, think it's impossible to account for all these people unless you're willing to ban every single person who pops up on that list from flying.
-
About that homeland security report...
is it 14-year old asian girls, or 70 year old black men, who are on message boards talking abou how many guns they have, and about how civil war 2 is right around the corner? (answer = zero - it is white men doing the talking about this stuff usually)
Just as STATISTICALLY you are going to catch more terrorists by searching middle eastern males entering planes, you are STATISTICALLY going to catch more domestic anti-govt terrorist types by profiling MEN. Arab males, of course. Yes, white men too.

I know this is Debka but there is some good info in here.

The Rich Jihadi Proved Western Anti-Terror Measures Don't Work
DEBKAfile's Special Analysis
December 27, 2009
Airliner bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab
The horrendous sight of another Western airline crashing over the US on Christmas Day 2009 was averted by a fluke and the resourcefulness of passengers and cabin crew - not by the anti-terror agencies' high-tech gadgets, vast budgets and airport security measures.
Six months ago, Umar Faroul Abdulmuttallab's father warned the US Embassy in Lagos of his 23-year old son's alarming extremist Muslim activities. Yet he was granted a US visa. On Dec. 25, he sailed through Schiphol international airport with 80 grams of PETN (pentaervthritol) high explosive and liquid detonators in his underpants after landing from Lagos and caught the Northwest Flight 253 from Amsterdam to Detroit.
If the British Richard Reid goes down in terror history as "the shoe bomber" who failed to crash a US airliner over LA in 2001, Abdulmuttallab may be remembered as the Rich Jihadi, the son of a wealthy Nigerian banker and ex-minister, the second millionaire-terrorist to follow in the footsteps of the first, Osama bin Laden.
Saturday, Dec. 26, the US government filed the following charge: Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, a Nigerian national, boarded Northwest Flight 253 in Amsterdam, Netherlands on December 24, 2009 and had a device attached to his body. As the flight was approaching Detroit Metropolitan Airport, Abdulmutallab set off the device, which resulted in a fire and what appears to have been an explosion. Abdulmutallab was then subdued and restrained by the passengers and flight crew. The airplane landed shortly thereafter, and he was taken into custody by Customs and Border Patrol officers.
Terrified passengers told the FBI investigators that twenty minutes before landing, the suspect went to the bathroom. On returning to his seat, he complained of a stomach ache and covered himself with a blanket, from which pops, smoke and flames soon emerged. Jasper Schuringa, a Dutch passenger, tackled the suspect and helped the cabin crew put out the fire and restrain him. Abdulmuttallab himself, hospitalized with burns, is quoted as admitting to links with al Qaeda and claiming to have received the explosives in Yemen after a month's training.
This contradicts earlier US attempts to play down the incident by claiming he was a loner.
Indeed, al Qaeda's record since its first attempt to blow up New York's Twin Towers in 1993, is remarkably consistent; its planners have deviated very little from their methods of operation or their targets and remain fixated on their primary goal of smashing America as the Western world's superpower.
To this end, Al Qaeda has forged ahead steadfastly for 18 years undeterred by failures:
After the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York and Washington, the fundamentalist terrorists took a break before striking Madrid trains in 2004, London transport in 2005, and trying to down a dozen transatlantic airliners with liquid explosives in 2006. This last plot copied the terrorist Ramzi Yusuf's failed bid in 1991 to hijack 12 airliners taking off for the US from Asian airports and crash them over American cities.
Just as stubbornly, Western counter-terror agencies, while armed with the most advanced especially developed technology for fighting terrorists and astronomical budgets, persist in playing down al Qaeda's potency and resolve and glossing over two essential facts:
1. The fundamentalist school of Islam, Sunni and Shiite, has declared a perpetual war on Western culture. It is not rooted in political or social differences, such as the gap between the have-not Muslim peoples and the affluent West, or even in various world disputes like the Israel-Palestinian conflict, which are often held up as symbols of injustice. These extremists simply loathe everything the West stands for: religious orientation, philosophy, way of thinking and mores, and are willing to lay down their lives to extinguish it.
2. Al Qaeda holds to the belief that devastating attacks on big US cities are the key to smashing America's wealth and strength as the leading Western superpower.
For its activists, the jihadists, civilian airline jets are the preferred weapons of mass destruction because of their vulnerability and because Western security is full of holes and easily misled by its own preconceptions.
Most of the Western media covering the failed attempt to blow up the Delta airline over Detroit mulled in wonder over the discovery that the bomber was no wild man from Tora Bora or Waziristan or poor boy from a wretched Baghdad, Cairo or Karachi slum, but the scion of a rich and privileged Nigerian family, who could afford to send him to the prestigious London College University to study engineering and allow him the freedom to choose what he wanted to do with his life.
Why he chose to martyr himself as a terrorist defied most Western pundits, showing that very little has been learned from the way al Qaeda evolved from 1987, when Osama bin Laden debuted in the Pakistani town of Peshawar as leader of an organization no one had ever heard of called al Qaeda, despite a background very much like that of the young Nigerian. He too belonged to one of the wealthiest families in Saudi Arabia and opted for the life of an extremist terrorist.
Western agencies appear to find the real objectives and the roots and the motives governing the Islamist organization's choice of targets and weapons beyond their understanding, when in fact Al Qaeda's methods are brutally simple, even primitive.
The two elements working for them are good intelligence and patience.
Having achieved its first major objective, obliteration of the iconic New York Trade Center in 2001, al Qaeda's planners are working on their next goal, which has so far proved elusive: knocking the transatlantic air traffic connecting America to the world out of the skies.
DEBKAfile's counter-terror analysts are in no doubt that Osama bin Laden will not rest until he attains this goal, which means that the war on terror will not be resolved in the battlefields of Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan or Palestine, but in the Pentagon, Washington and the authorities safeguarding international civilian air travel.
Al Qaeda is in no hurry. Seven years elapsed between the first attempt to destroy the Trade Center and the final calamity. Therefore, the jihadis will patiently repeat the young Nigerian's failed attempt until they succeed.
Taking this into account, US and British law enforcement authorities must now confront their own deficiencies and put them right without delay. But first they must answer some tough questions:
For instance, although he was placed on a US watch list, Umar Abdulmutallab never made it to the no-fly category.
And on top of America's abundant sophisticated gadgets, satellites, drones and electronics which failed to put its security agencies on guard for the threat to Northwest Flight 253, they had two known pieces of human intelligence to hand which they ignored:
The UK refused the young Nigerian an entry visa after he ended his engineering studies at the London College University in 2008 - which should have alerted the Americans, if they were informed; and his own father cautioned the US ambassador in Lagos about his son's extremist proclivities.
Finally, although the German BND intelligence service passed on its suspicions of a dynamic, youthful al Qaeda network evolving in Western Europe, Abdulmuttallab easily passed through two airports' screening arrangements carrying an explosive device, and boarded a transatlantic airliner with a valid US visa.

How many crimes to members of the VRWC commit each year in relation to others? Its a phony bs scare tactic by the govt to divert attrention away from real threats.
-
i agree 100% that middle eastern males age 16 to 35 are the biggest threat.
What group do you think presents the SECOND largest threat, 33? Is it young white males?

240 - who commits the most violent crime in this country? Thats who.
-
I see. You want to change the topic from Terrorism, over to domestic violent crimes.
Was the homeland warning referring to terrorism, or violent crimes?
-

I really dont know 240 since it was more of a political document than anything else.
It was not a serious work, but a complete sham to sell to a stupid public.
-
if the topic is domestic terrorism (and it is)
#1 group that commits the act is arabs
#2 group is white males.
I understand this.

Other than one incident in 1995, nearly 15 years ago, what acts of terrorism have white makles committed?
i am trying to remember and cant.
-
More govt incompetence to the Nth Degree.
Thank god for the white guy, AAGGAAIINN, who saved the other passengers from certain death by taking this savage animal down.
They should have opened the hatch and thrown him out the door.
333 dontcha know white people aren't allowed to make statements like these... ;D
-
yea i guess the only mentioning allowed of white people is if a white beats up a minority, if a white does something good, he should be described as a healthy male, more of the political correctness double standards
-

Hey - to me, if its ok to sterotype white guys as RW crazies, potential domestic terrorists, fanatics, etc, the least we can do is point out when they save 287 people on a plane right?
As far as this whole incident goes, its more PC suicide just like the left wing caravan freakshow wants.
-
exactly 333 if the left didnt do something good, which they havent, then heaven forbid give someone credit for actually doing something good that isnt a lefty communist, liberals dont like competition.

Bull Dyke Napolitano came out today and said "the system worked"?
What was that - having a passenger take his life in his hands to make up for the incompetent govt not doing its job?
-
that sounds about right, the communists, trying to take credit and pat their bullshit system on the back even though it failed
-
I think BF's pretty much dead-on.
We're never going to plug all the holes. We can always push the government to do better (and should), but, in a free society, there's just too much inherent vulnerability built into the system.

As per this incident, I disagree Skip. All of the billions and billions of dollars, patriot Act, etc were all geared exactly towards this type of person.
Sure we cant stop everybody, but if we cant stop something like this, than what is the fucking point of having DHS, Patriotic Act, TSA, etc when all evidence points to the fact that the average guy is probably more ffective than all of this shit?
-
good point 333 we spend all this money with these organizations but they wont act on shit when the guys own father lets officials know months in advance, and it came down to one passenger saving the flight , great point 333
-

Of course we cant get everyone, I get that, but if we cant stop this but for the brave actions of some average person, than I see absolutely no purpose whatsoever for TSA, Patrioti Act, Etc.
I'm dead serious, this guy was the exact proto-type terrorist everything we did was geared to stop. AND IT DID NOT WORK!
Let me carry my firearm on board and I can probably save the govt billions and billions of dollars.
Its not as if this guy shot up a school in a rural area or something.

Yeah, I follow you. It's just that you're dealing with huge bureaucracies like the TSA and shit just gets lost, mishandled, not passed to the correct people, etc. These are errors inherent in all governments.
There's no doubt they should have caught this guy and some heads should probably roll. But, I don't forsee us every being mistake free. Thankfully, there are still heroes helping out.
-

You still want to send him to Nigeria for punishment?

Of course, but we have to catch these types.
Do you know what would have occurred if this guy was successful but for the bravery of the passenger?
-
You still want to send him to Nigeria for punishment?
I wish they would have opened the door and thrown him out over the great lakes.
-
I wish they would have opened the door and thrown him out over the great lakes.
Not you, I was asking BodyProSite. I'm with you...throw him out the fucking door.
-
na that guy on the plane shoulda just killed the piece of shit, at that point they are just two people on the plane, one doing good one doing bad, no government involvment, so nobody could have cried about the government violating anything
-

How - choking him to death? He would get arrested by the govt.
-
Of course, but we have to catch these types.

Dude, really...that's like trying to say why haven't the police caught all criminals, after all, criminals are exactly the type of people they're looking for. C'mon.
-
yea 333 you are right, the govenment wants to prosecute soldiers for bloodying the lip of a proven terrorist, i am sure they would have found a way to make the passenger that saved everyone look like the bad guy if he had killed the terrorist
-
Dude, really...that's like trying to say why haven't the police caught all criminals, after all, criminals are exactly the type of people they're looking for. C'mon.
Skip - most of our resources are geared towards this exact type of criminal. IMHO, if we cant stop this, there is probably not much elese we really can stop.
Btw - check out this video from Celente on December 24th !!!!!!
Damn this guy is good.
-
"what is the fucking point of having DHS, Patriotic Act, TSA, etc when all evidence points to the fact that the average guy is probably more ethan all of this shit? "
They should teach Heroism 101 in every high school class.

Where are all the Muslim apologists in this thread? I'm surprised the Christians or Jews haven't blamed for this yet by the Muslim lovers on this board.

Perhaps your "Destroy on Sight" posting style in regards to the apologists has made them think twice before just chiming in.

COPS fear that 25 British-born Muslims are plotting to bomb Western airliners.
The fanatics, in five groups, are now training at secret terror camps in Yemen.
It was there London-educated Umar Abdulmutallab, 23, prepared for his Christmas Day bid to blow up a US jet.
The British extremists in Yemen are in their early 20s and from Bradford, Luton and Leytonstone, East London.
They are due to return to the UK early in 2010 and will then await internet instructions from al-Qaeda on when to strike.
A Scotland Yard source said: "The great fear is Abdulmutallab is the first of many ready to attack planes and kill tens of thousands.
"We know there are four or five radicalised British Muslim cells in the Yemen.
"They are due back within months when they will be under constant surveillance."
The 25 suspects, of Pakistani and Somali descent, were radicalised in UK mosques.
Some had been to university and studied engineering or computer sciences.
Others were former street gang members.
Special Branch monitored them as they flew to Yemen, in the Middle East, from British airports in the spring and summer.
In almost every case, their tickets were paid for in cash and bought less than a week before travel.
The source added: "Imams would have promised them rewards in heaven for becoming suicide bombers prepared to kill Westerners."
PM Gordon Brown and Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson were being briefed.
The warnings came as another Nigerian was last night held in Detroit on the same flight attacked on Christmas Day. It later emerged the man had fallen ill.
Al-Qaeda in Yemen warned the West four days before Friday's attack that a bombing was imminent.
Terrorist Mohammed al-Kalwi issued the video threat in the wake of a Yemeni airstrike on a militant training camp.
Al-Kalwi was reportedly killed in another airstrike on Thursday.
President Barack Obama's administration is to review all airport security.

All I know if that a lot of very alert people will be on planes now - which is a very good thing.

Only because the govt is so damn incompetent and negligent that people literally are taking their lives in their hands despite the hundreds of billions we spend on this crap.
