Valentine's Day 1995 was not going well for Sally and Ray McNeil.
Not that either expected love poems and roses.
Both bodybuilders and ex-Marines, the couple's awful eight-year marriage was wearing out, ground down by vanity, jealousy and muscular machismo.
Yet Sally seethed that evening when Ray was late in showing up at their apartment in Oceanside, Calif., north of San Diego.
She was spoiling for a fight when he finally arrived after 10 p.m.
Shantina and John, Sally's preteen children from another marriage, cowered in their bedroom as the combat commenced. The kids knew the drill.
As a prosecutor later said of the marriage, "That's what they did - they hit each other."
And neither was the sort to surrender.
Ray McNeil, 29, was a buff 256-pounder who was named Mr. California in 1991. Sally, a 34-year-old ripped blonde, had won the U.S. Armed Services Physique Championship twice in the late '80s.
But this confrontation would be different. It would be their last.
As Ray stood at the kitchen stove cooking chicken, Sally asked him to explain where he had been.
After some shouting, Shantina, 11, said she heard a "gurgling" sound, as though her mother was being choked.
Sally went to a closet, removed a 12-gauge shotgun from its case and chambered a shell. She walked back to the kitchen and pulled the trigger.
The shot blew a hole through Ray's six-pack abs. He fell to his knees, and his wife loaded a second shell and shot him in the jaw.
She then called 911. In the background, Ray could be heard moaning, "Why, oh god, why?"
Shantina ran to a neighbor's apartment, hollering, "Oh my God! My mom shot my dad!" As Sally waited for police, the neighbor overheard her say, "I just wanted him to leave me alone."
Ray McNeil was still alive and conscious when police arrived. As he listened to Sally tell cops that he had choked her, the bodybuilder tossed his bloody head from side to side and uttered a firm "No!"
He was declared dead two hours later, and Sally was charged with murder, causing a sensation in the insular world of bodybuilding.
Ray McNeil, a native Jamaican, was among the top 20 professionals in the nation in his weight class.
Sally, who grew up in Allentown, Penn., was an amateur bodybuilder, but she used her physique to earn money in niche muscle sports, including female submission wrestling and a semi-erotic amusement known as apartment wrestling, in which men pay to grapple with muscular women.
She used the nickname "Killer Sally" in those enterprises.
It fit, said her first husband, Anthony Lowden.

Sometimes when you read the McNeil interviews, you see her talking about a bodybuilding roommate they lived with but is never mentioned by name. It was probably Michio Grubbs, I remember someone mentioning him and Ray being roommates for a time right before Ray died.

Let this be a lesson not to buy the expensive chicken (taken from one of Sally's appeals) -
"McNeil and Ray were both former [M]arines, bodybuilders and steroid users. Their relationship was replete with violent altercations. Evidence was introduced that McNeil had hit Ray and threw things at him, including dumbbells and a VCR that she threw out a second story window as Ray was walking below, and that Ray had hit, kicked and pushed McNeil leaving her with bruises and black eyes. Evidence was also introduced that McNeil had several violent altercations with others, including women she suspected Ray was having affairs with, barroom bouncers, and the police.
On the night of the shooting, Ray said he was going out to the Price Club, which closed at 8:30 p.m., to get chicken for dinner. However, he did not return until 10:30 p.m., and had gone to a more expensive market. Ray had had several affairs during the course of the marriage, and McNeil suspected he had been seeing a girlfriend. McNeil criticized Ray for getting the more expensive chicken, which she could not afford, and asked what had taken him so long and if he had been with his girlfriend. She also told him he looked like “shit” and would not do well in an upcoming bodybuilding contest.
McNeil told police that Ray then slapped her, pushed her down on the floor and started choking her. McNeil squirmed away, ran into the bedroom and took her shotgun out of its case in the closet. She grabbed two shells, loaded one, pumped the gun, and then “went out and aimed it at [Ray]” and shot him. At the time, Ray was at the kitchen stove cooking chicken. McNeil stated that after Ray was shot, he doubled over and then came towards her, so she loaded the second round, pumped the gun again, and shot him a second time.
After that, McNeil gave the shotgun to a neighbor, and called 911. The 911 operator who took the call testified that she heard a male, who had been moaning, ask: “Why did you shoot me?” and McNeil respond: “I told you that I wasn't taking your shit anymore.”
When police arrived, Ray was on his hands and knees about five feet inside the apartment and McNeil was standing at the kitchen sink. It looked like Ray's face had been blown off from the bridge of his nose down, and he was saying “Why?[,]” “Oh God,” and “Help me.” When paramedics arrived, Ray pointed to his stomach, and they saw his liver protruding through the skin. Ray was taken to the hospital and died that night. The shotgun wound to his midsection was the one that caused his death; the shotgun blast to his face caused massive damage to his lower jaw and face.
A police criminologist testified that the weapon used was a 12-gauge pump shotgun with a pistol grip, which was fired at Ray's midsection and then at his face from about six feet away. A crime scene reconstructionist opined that Ray's head was close to, and in line with, the sofa cushions when he was shot in the face, which would indicate that Ray was not upright when he was shot a second time.
Police discovered fingernail marks on McNeil's neck the night of the shooting and Ray's body was exhumed so that his fingernails could be examined. His fingernails were very short, and it was determined that his hands could not have caused the marks on McNeil's neck and further, that the marks were inconsistent with manual strangulation and could have been self-inflicted."
Other points of interest, I remember from a bunch of interviews and conversations with people who knew them -
1) Ray did stay alive for at least a few hours before he died.
2) Sally's kids might of saw the whole thing, as they were called as witnesses to relate what happened that night.
3) Sally made some bizarre comments to the police, including one blaming Ray for hogging all the good drugs during their marriage.
4) Sally alternately complained and raved about Ray's giant dong in interviews afterward. She said he'd have rough sex, including anal, and complain when Sally couldn't take it.

A San Francisco bodybuilder convicted of the 1993 murder of his fiancee received the maximum sentence for the crime yesterday, despite his family's pleas that he be shown mercy by the court.
Superior Court Judge Douglas Munson sentenced 33-year-old Gordon Kimbrough to 27 years to life for the first-degree murder of Kristy Ramsey on June 20, 1993. Kimbrough killed the 27-year-old aerobics instructor in their Potrero Hill apartment after Ramsey told him she was ending their four- year relationship.
The sentencing followed a tearful plea by Kimbrough's sister, Denita Allicock, who, holding a Bible, begged the court to sentence Kimbrough to a lesser amount of time.
"My brother committed this crime in a fit of passion after being unexpectedly rejected by the ideal woman of his dreams," said Allicock, who quoted passages from the Bible during her passionate plea. "I've come to beg this court for mercy for my brother. He is a loving brother and a loving and caring soul. It is in your hands to temper justice with mercy."
Munson also heard from Ramsey's mother and sister, who held each other's hands as they each addressed Kimbrough directly.
"It has always been about you," said Ramsey's sister, Samantha, as she faced Kimbrough. "You have been so selfish throughout this entire process. You manipulated and humiliated Kristy by constantly lying, cheating and abusing her. . . . The pain in my heart is indescribable. I lost my best friend. I will forever be haunted by the panic she must have felt as her life was being taken away from her."
Ramsey's mother, Shirley, held a photograph of her deceased daughter, as she spoke to Kimbrough, who did not look at her.

Munson read his sentence after denying a request for a new trial by Kimbrough's attorney, Michael Gaines.

On the night of the murder, Kimbrough tackled Ramsey, wrapped an electrical cord from an iron around her neck three times, knotted it and then stabbed her with a kitchen knife.
Kimbrough maintained throughout his trial that he had killed Ramsey in a fit of passion. But prosecutor Peter Cling argued that the killing was premeditated.
Munson read his sentence after denying a request for a new trial by Kimbrough's attorney, Michael Gaines.
He will be again be eligible for parole later this month, on the 22nd:

Well that’s close…
When the Fuzz showed up he grabbed a 5ml syringe and loaded it up with cypianate and then jabbed it in his neck. When the man approached him he threatened to “Shoot all this shit in my neck and die!”
They didn’t know what it was. I don’t remember if he simply gave up or they bum rushed him and grabbed the syringe.

Last I heard he was in Folsom Prison.
Gordo tells another similar story, in San Quentin News:
" One Light Keeper shared his experience with despair and hopelessness.
I had the knife to my throat, and it was a friend,
a retired police officer, who talked me out
of it,” said Gordon Kimbrough. He still
bears the scar from his attempted suicide
on his neck. “Just as my friend was there
to help me, the Light Keepers are here to
help you!” Kimbrough added."
