What do you think?
-
Another thread without men in thongs. ::)

One of the few times I've seen them look good on a white guy. Only blacks and certain hispanics can pull it off well.
-
I've seen people of all races pull it off well, Asians, Whites, Latinos... What about Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean? I think his looked really cool. Lots of other white guys pull it off.
It's more about the shape of a persons face and personality I think. But lots people who get dreads aren't really doing it to look "good" the want to look kind of freaky and strange.
-
Alright, bouncing it around a bit, you'd need to be on the leaner end of things facially. Also, atleast with white guys, it helps a bit if you combine it with facial hair.
-
Dreadlocks on white dudes are a slippery slope - it often leads to playing with hacky sacks at music festivals, juggling, taking part in street theatre and other assorted twatery.
My older brother went to school with a lad called Billy who decided to get dreadlocks; fastforward 10 years and Billy is an unsucessful reggae artist called "The Undercover Hippy" who sings about love and peace in a fake Jamaican accent. This is despite him being very white, posh and from the West Midlands.
Typical white hippster with dreadlocks (note. also a ginger):

Don't Look good majority. It tends to look like stringy rope, and the top tend to look like the ginger pictured. Latinos of varying african descent can pull it off the har is easier to twist, and with African people's if twisted and left alone, it will dread. Don't really need to put anything in it to dread it, but to keep it looking good. I had some small growth in college.
Depp look durty in POC.
A funny thing I used to do in high school was to take some Dax hair grease (it was like axle grease), after I had a temple fade, and put in in my hair and massaged it in. I did this until I had hundres of little tight balls or "peas" in my head, making my head "peasy". This was a cool look when you have a temple fade (only the temples and back faded up) and had the hairline edged up...
-
Did you ever have a high top fade, Parker?

Oh, hell yeah, and and those are blackmail pics right there. I had a 6 inch high top in 8th grade. By 9th grade I had a part put in (my homage to the hip-hop artist Kwame).

Awesome.
I've got pics of me during my "ponytail and earring" phase which I like to keep well buried.

Ahh, youth, I also had a "Gumby", in which the hair was of course to the side...but the one that upset my mother was the "peasy" style I described above. She said i looked like a Bushman with that hair.
-
Never knew that was called a "gumby".
I briefly went by the nicknames "Hanson" and "hmm bop", due to me bearing an uncanny resemblance to the drummer of a popular pop trio at the time. The long hair went pretty quickly after that.
-
So what do you all got now? Just regular boring haircuts?

dreads are disgusting, nasty. braids work for anyone if done right.

Dreads are actually clean. It's a myth that they are nasty.
As a teenager I had them for 2 years and I still washed my hair every other day.
Some people with dreads let themselves get nasty, but that's just because they have a dirty and grungy personality. There's nothing dirty about dreads. People just think they "look dirty", and they kindof do, but that's how they're supposed to look. They aren;t supposed to look sexy or glamorous.
My hair is getting pretty long, maybe i'll let it lock up again.

Maybe yours looked kinda dirty. But locks can be glamous and sexy. I've dated women with beautiful, sexy, vibrant locks. Some that just look gorgeous on them. Clean, well kept, with moisturizer in them. You see the difference between yours and theirs is that they knew how to take care of their hair, and they lock it whether it's short or not. Most black people can just let their hair lock, naturally, other folks got to do stuff to their hair to lock it (so I've heard)...

No I just had natty dreads. I let them form naturally over a period of months so the looked more random, some big, some small. The kind of dreads you are talking about are salon dreads where it's all sectioned off and backcombed and all that. They can look really clean and nice, it's true. But natty dreads just look rude.
By the way, white people's hair locks up naturally too. It just takes longer. Mine did.
There's lots of myths out there about dreadlocks.

I made half an attempt but decided not to continue.

All you do is stop combing your hair and stop using conditioner. Let it get dry and it will start to tangle up into dreadlocks on it's own. It usually takes about 3 months to start up, and maybe a year or year and a half to finish.
All you gotta do is wash it with shampoo a few times a week and leave it alone, let nature work it's magic.
Of course if you do it like this, you'll have some insane looking dreads.

Dreadlocks is most associated with Rastafarian-ism whether white or black it is most is irrelevant to me. The more pertinent question is whether they subscribe to the religion, and the answer is probably no.
I understand that getbig is not the place to discuss such matters. Probably only parker has a concept of what I am talking about and knows who that person in the picture is.
-
What do you think?
Nordic Vikings braided their hair into dreadlocks so its not anything weird. They did it because it helped protect their head from injuries to the head from combat

That's another myth about dreads. That they are for rastas only. They are not.
Rastas have only been around for about 80 years, dreads are ancient. Ancient Hindus, Chriistians and Buddists had dreads thousands of years ago. Cavemen also had dreads because they wren't combing their hair.
So no, dreads are not just a rasta thing. Go to India and check out how many hindu holy men have them.

No flame, but that sounds like potential vagina repellant to me.
-
they also cause heavy tension on your hair follicles, so if you don't have thick hair I would highly suggest not dreading your hair. long story short, my (white) friend dreaded his hair, fast forward 2 years after he shaved his head and he's practically bald.. it's suicide for your hair. I've heard this story countless times from white people with dreads, it's just not meant to be.
-

Yeah, but seesince white have different texture hair, it's stringy at the top, and dopey as locks. And yes those are salon locks I was talking about. But when my sis had them foe a while, they looked good
your application of the words "rude" to your locks gives off the impression you want or try to be diff or to go with a counter clean look. To me, it looks unkempt on people who don't have African textured hair because the stringiness of the hair up top at the root of the lock, it looks like regular hair, thing stringy locks. With African hair their is more body to the hair itself, and the locks look better from the root...it has a more pleasing aesthetic...
Put it to you like this. It's like someone who has naturally wavy hair and only has to "train" it to lay down with a lil Dax grease vs someone who puts a shitload of "S" Curl in their hair with a du-rag, there are two different looks. I had the former (and the women got sea-sick on the waves, baby...)
Locks like any other hairstyle can be either clean or dirty...like a unkempt Afro---which is a bush, Like Maxwell used to have. Or just a bush with "peas" in it... I used to just sit in class and twist my hair and after a couple days all I had were mini locks all around...
-

I don't think that you read my comment, I said "most associated", I never said "That they are for rastas only.". At the end of the day it is a hair style, that is why I said "associated". And you are correct about the time frame.
-
No flame, but that sounds like potential vagina repellant to me.
It definitely does repel lots of chicks, but it also attracts some like magnets. Some women will fall in love with you instantly.
If you're the playboy type, dreads aren't for you. I'm not the playboy type myself so I don't care too much about it. I've always got vaj no matter what my hair looked like.

Well, when a white person has locks they do tend to look more rough and grungy for the first few years until they mature. Black peoples locks easily become mature and get that hard solid look faster.
Neither way is better though, just different. When I see a girl with crazy, wild looking dreads I think it looks awesome and its a big turn on for me. But i'm not realy into normal ideas of what's beautiful really. When I see a woman wearing tons of make up and looking like a barbi doll I will usually not be very interested at all. Different strkes for different folks.

Done correctly and kept groomed they will attract women...it's how they are kept that matters. It's been said that for a black man a good barber is one of top 6 things to have. And that goes for upkeep of locks...keeping them "tight", groomed at all times..that is what attracts women, a well groomed man, who takes care of his hair, especially something as noticable as locks...
Vince, have you seen any Norse Vikings?
Red Hook, yeah for many black folk locking their hair was a "religious" affirmation of the Rasta movement. But also women did it to reject having their hair permed and to reject the notion hat only straight hair is beautiful, to accept one's African roots...there are pics of Nubians and other Africans with dreadlocks in the tombs of Egyptian kings, so locking hair goes back thousands of yrs...
What old is new...

Ha! My missus throws a fit if I shave my hair too short, fuck knows when I'd get laid again If I decided to go for the Burning Spear look.

Yeah dreads go back thousands of years to every contient and every race of people. So linking it to the Rasta movement is kind of silly to me. And although there is a lot of dreadlocks in black history and they have become a symbol of Afro-culture to lots of people they aren;t a black thing really. Chinese Kings have had dreads, lots of characters from the Bible had them, the Vikings, Aztecs and Mayans, Pacific Islanders, etc.
I'm not saying dreads aren't an important part of black history, but I don't like it when some black people act like dreads belong to black people, and other races have no right to have them.
It's true, your average run of the mill woman will want a slick looking man with a shaper looking style. But some women prefer a more grungy look. It depends on your lifestyle and your pilosophy on life. People who are into natty looking dreads are usually against materialism and have certain other spiritual philosphopies.

Baldness is genetic. This entire post = false. Read up on it, dont argue with me cause I'm just stating facts.
no shit it's genetic captain obvious, if you would read what I actually posted you would understand. Dreads cause heavy strain on your hair follicles from the constant back combing and just the weight, which will cause your hair to be weak and thin out, or in some cases the hair will not grow back.
-
We have a few whites here with dreads (not to be confused with braids by the way)
95% of them over here are from neighbouring island St.Barths where there are alot of white dreadlock kings.
Here is one that lives here...
-
Dreadlocks just look plain stupid on whites. As do corn rows and afros. Just doesn't look right.
Saopl is right regarding follicular strain. The constant tension on the follicles results in the hair ceasing to grow in areas where it occurs. You also see this alot in people who've worn tight braids for many years. Their hairlines are far receded from their original hair line due to all teh years of stress.

No. Follicles do not fall of and not come back from dreads because of the weight. Your friends would have lost their hair no matter what hairstyle. Male pattern baldness is caused by dihydrotestosteron and nothing else.
http://www.alopecia-information.com/blog/hair-loss-from-stress-alopecia/
"Traction alopecia (hair loss) is caused by pulling tightly on the hair for long periods. Dreadlocks have been viewed as a major concern for loss of hair. Extreme tension on the hair and scalp contribute to hair loss. In some cases, hair loss can be permanent. If caught early enough, damaged hair can be helped and process can be reversed."
fucking idiot.

You have absolutely no idea of what your talking about. There aren't depictions of Egyptians with dreadlocks. When you see an image of an Egyptians they are wearing headdresses and wigs often made out of animal hair. All of this is ethnocentric pseudo-history. Egyptians weren't even black, or to be more precise black like you, nor were they white as in European but something akin to a proto-Semitic race. And Nubians, were a separate group distinct from Egyptians used mostly as labor by the Egyptians.
Africa is a huge place with a lot of distinct types. It would be the equivalent of me claiming my family were vikings because my ancestors came from Europe. Blacks want to claim heritage with Egypt because it gives them a sense of cultural accomplishment and importance. There was a big movement in the sixties in interject this type of pseudo-history into public schools as a way to boost of the confidence of blacks by giving them a sense of cultural roots. However, it has no basis in reality.

it's pretty obvious that those dreads are weaved into real hair.

Archer77, you need reading comprehension lessons. Nowhere did I state that Egyptians wore deadlocks. I stated that there are depictions of Nubians and other African peoples with them in tombs of Egyptian kings (pharoahs). And I know the difference between a wig and actual hair.
Furthermore, we don't really know the genetic make up of ancient Egypt at that time because. There were many peoples in that area and race mixing in that whole area has gone on for thousands of yrs.
Nubians, yes were used as laborers, but they were formible foes in the lower kingdom. Sometimes Egpytian nobles wore sandles with a depiction of Nubians on the bottom, so that they could walk on them all day.
Also, Egypt is part of the African continent and is on the African Shelf...
There has been a long standing issue that Egyptian or Muslims or Arabs of that region do not want to call themselves Africans, due to cultural and racism, but they are part of that contitnent. That's like Italians not considering themselves Europeans...please read my post next time

You're not even really white. You have dark hair. You're mixed.
-
Dreadlocks or braids wil only make you hair fall out if they are done really really tight against the scalp, or maybe if you have some enormous and heavy dreads. If you have regular size braids or dreads and you leave a little bit of room at the scalp for the hair to be loose then your hair won't fall out.
This usually happens to women who keep their hair in ridiculously tight braids for years, it's very uncommon, especially for dreads.

You are so full of shit it's not even worth discussing this with you...
You don't have to have blonde hair to be white, and having blonde hair dosen't mean that you are white. There are people with jewish ancestry who have blonde hair. There are plenty of people with fully germanic/celtic/slavic ancestry who i consider white and they have dark hair and even brown eyes but they are still white and not mixed.
For the record, my "whiskers" are red and brown, the red is more obvious in my facial hair than my head hair.
Heres my hair and eye color again, now post yours. Thanks in advance.
p.s to anyone who dosen't know already, these pics are 2 year old and i have shorter hair now.
