One of the few times I've seen them look good on a white guy. Only blacks and certain hispanics can pull it off well.

I've seen people of all races pull it off well, Asians, Whites, Latinos... What about Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean? I think his looked really cool. Lots of other white guys pull it off.

It's more about the shape of a persons face and personality I think. But lots people who get dreads aren't really doing it to look "good" the want to look kind of freaky and strange.

Alright, bouncing it around a bit, you'd need to be on the leaner end of things facially. Also, atleast with white guys, it helps a bit if you combine it with facial hair.

Dreadlocks on white dudes are a slippery slope - it often leads to playing with hacky sacks at music festivals, juggling, taking part in street theatre and other assorted twatery.

My older brother went to school with a lad called Billy who decided to get dreadlocks; fastforward 10 years and Billy is an unsucessful reggae artist called "The Undercover Hippy" who sings about love and peace in a fake Jamaican accent. This is despite him being very white, posh and from the West Midlands.

Typical white hippster with dreadlocks (note. also a ginger):

Don't Look good majority. It tends to look like stringy rope, and the top tend to look like the ginger pictured. Latinos of varying african descent can pull it off the har is easier to twist, and with African people's if twisted and left alone, it will dread. Don't really need to put anything in it to dread it, but to keep it looking good. I had some small growth in college.

Depp look durty in POC.

A funny thing I used to do in high school was to take some Dax hair grease (it was like axle grease), after I had a temple fade, and put in in my hair and massaged it in. I did this until I had hundres of little tight balls or "peas" in my head, making my head "peasy". This was a cool look when you have a temple fade (only the temples and back faded up) and had the hairline edged up...

Oh, hell yeah, and and those are blackmail pics right there. I had a 6 inch high top in 8th grade. By 9th grade I had a part put in (my homage to the hip-hop artist Kwame).

Awesome.

I've got pics of me during my "ponytail and earring" phase which I like to keep well buried.

Ahh, youth, I also had a "Gumby", in which the hair was of course to the side...but the one that upset my mother was the "peasy" style I described above. She said i looked like a Bushman with that hair.

Never knew that was called a "gumby".

I briefly went by the nicknames "Hanson" and "hmm bop", due to me bearing an uncanny resemblance to the drummer of a popular pop trio at the time. The long hair went pretty quickly after that.

Dreads are actually clean. It's a myth that they are nasty.

As a teenager I had them for 2 years and I still washed my hair every other day.

Some people with dreads let themselves get nasty, but that's just because they have a dirty and grungy personality. There's nothing dirty about dreads. People just think they "look dirty", and they kindof do, but that's how they're supposed to look. They aren;t supposed to look sexy or glamorous.

My hair is getting pretty long, maybe i'll let it lock up again.

Maybe yours looked kinda dirty. But locks can be glamous and sexy. I've dated women with beautiful, sexy, vibrant locks. Some that just look gorgeous on them. Clean, well kept, with moisturizer in them. You see the difference between yours and theirs is that they knew how to take care of their hair, and they lock it whether it's short or not. Most black people can just let their hair lock, naturally, other folks got to do stuff to their hair to lock it (so I've heard)...

No I just had natty dreads. I let them form naturally over a period of months so the looked more random, some big, some small. The kind of dreads you are talking about are salon dreads where it's all sectioned off and backcombed and all that. They can look really clean and nice, it's true. But natty dreads just look rude.

By the way, white people's hair locks up naturally too. It just takes longer. Mine did.

There's lots of myths out there about dreadlocks.

I didn't know they can form naturally.

All you do is stop combing your hair and stop using conditioner. Let it get dry and it will start to tangle up into dreadlocks on it's own. It usually takes about 3 months to start up, and maybe a year or year and a half to finish.

All you gotta do is wash it with shampoo a few times a week and leave it alone, let nature work it's magic.

Of course if you do it like this, you'll have some insane looking dreads.

Dreadlocks is most associated with Rastafarian-ism whether white or black it is most is irrelevant to me. The more pertinent question is whether they subscribe to the religion, and the answer is probably no.

I understand that getbig is not the place to discuss such matters. Probably only parker has a concept of what I am talking about and knows who that person in the picture is.

What do you think?

Nordic Vikings braided their hair into dreadlocks so its not anything weird.  They did it because it helped protect their head from injuries to the head from combat

That's another myth about dreads. That they are for rastas only. They are not.

Rastas have only been around for about 80 years, dreads are ancient. Ancient Hindus, Chriistians and Buddists had dreads thousands of years ago. Cavemen also had dreads because they wren't combing their hair.

So no, dreads are not just a rasta thing. Go to India and check out how many hindu holy men have them.

No flame, but that sounds like potential vagina repellant to me.
