How do you figure a drink with zero calories, zero sugar, a tiny bit of sodium, and some artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners will make you gain fat?  Retain some water sure, but fat?

the theory being that since the brain equates sweetness with calories...when you consume something sweet with no calories, your body will make up the calories at some later time

crystal light is good stuff.  ;D

Honestly guys, I don't think drinking diet stuff is the worst for you, but yeah I think there is a possibility of your body sensing something sweet and producing a little insulin that may store some fat.  Like anything drink it in moderation and if you are looking to get super lean just cut it out to be safe.  Also it helps to learn to love water if you don't already.

Coca Cola Zero - Sweetened with aspartame and acesulfame potassium., the reason this is different than Diet Coke is Coca Cola Zero is a sugar free version of the Classic Coke formulation.

In other words, this is meant to be a sugar free version of the red cans of Coke you know and may or may not love. It has a redder, deeper color close to the color of Classic Coke and tastes far less like a diet soda (by many accounts) than Diet Coke.

I love Coke Zero. Always have. I don't get fat off of it. I understand that for a person who consumes a shitload of sugar that the sweetness (although not sugar) may trick the body into thinking it has sugar and will signal the release of insulin to stabilize this "fake" sugar and cause all the responses that sugar would under normal circumstances. Too bad, so fucking sad.

this only happens in some folks, not all-- and usually not those heavily involved in the fitness industry. There are no calories for my body to store and it is not easily fooled. I can diet into the single digits on Coke Zero. I love it chilled and from a can. Gotta have one. Every day.

ASSSSSSSS per tame.... will prolly jack me up some day, but NOT today.

That article is BS, its physically impossible to get fat from drinking sugar free / calorie free pop!!!!!!.   There's nothing your body can take from the diet pop to store as fat!. My old trainer Vince pro bber told me to drink diet pop when i get cravings.  Plus i know so many bbers that drink diet pop through their whole diet and get shredded.  I drank diet pop all through my last diet, and all through this off season.  Im the leanest iv ever been in the off season at 8%bf.   Its like saying drinking water will making you fat if you believe that their sugar or fat in the water?  ::).  Only in American people would believe such nonsense ::)

Because you think you are having something sweet, you get fat...

Broskie, there has to be a transference of energy. So there needs to be calories (energy) injested in order to convert and store as fat (dense energy)

you know whjat the funny thing is?

people argue that the body releases insulin because it thinks something sugary is going to enter the body

and they think that this would cause a decrese in body composition

but they dont understand that if this was to actually happen, if your body would release insulin after drinking a calorie free beverage....   this would actually help IMPROVE body composition

insulin release woudl be a positive effect!!!

ever hear of the controversial application of humalog where it is taken without any carbs, at a very low dose..... it is used to lean people out... before cardio, or whenever.

if you have an increase in insulin, your body's blood glucose will drop below normal, because some of it will have been pushed into storeage- almost always as glycogen in muscle. as a result, you have fuller muscles, and an increase in fat burning hormones. (the fat burning hormone, like GH, are released to elevate blood glucose back to normal)

Only for a shot time after you have depleted the glycogen through intense exercise.

Otherwise it's into triglycerides & transported through the bloodstream (where some can be oxidized & deposited as fatty plaques) to be stored as body fat.

one last time...the theory goes (again...i didn't make this up..just heard it thru some iron agers eons ago)..the theory goes that if you drink a diet soda that is sweet...millions of years of evolution has adapted the brain and body to associate sweetness with calories. So when the body does not get those calories with the sweetness, it makes up for it later by making you hungrier and you end up eating more.

hense taking in the same calories that you saved yourself by drinking a diet soda, from other food

thats about as simply as i can put it

Then instead of stating that you can magically create calories, just say it elevates hunger and can be a possible detriment to those who are dieting. :)

For the record, diet cola doesn't make me hungry, it actually creates satiety. Part of it has to do with the carbonation, the other contributing factor is the taste. After drinking any sort of cola, even if it's flat (yuck), I don't feel like eating. Even if I feel hungry, the carbonated beverage fills my stomach and I couldn't eat as much as I want to anyway. I love diet cola.

This thread's making me crave a Coke Zero and some Jack Daniels 8)

No tbombz, you're making this a blanket statement, insulin release in most cases with the average person who is trying to drop weight is not good.

insulin is a hormone-not a calorie, or source of energy.

insulin does not control or affect the "rate" of metabolism, insulin will never affect daily calorie totals..whether outgoing or ingoing.

thus, insulin can never be the cause of fat gain, because fat can can only be caused by energy excess. insulin contributes no energy.

You are an idiot.  In general, a theory is a time-tested, empirically-validated fact.  Not only is what you're saying wrong, it's just plain retarded.  You can't just make up some bullshit like this and call it a theory.  If you replace regular soda with diet, you're going to reduce your calorie intake.  Period.  Do not post false information to confuse all the tiny twinks.

So many things wrong with what you said...

the theory being that since the brain equates sweetness with calories...when you consume something sweet with no calories, your body will make up the calories at some later time

hense..fat!

I don't know about fat gain, but drinking Pepsi max makes me feel all sorts of bloated. Also seems to have a negative effect, albeit temporary, on my body composition.

Still it tastes great!

I already posted this on this thread. It's called an hypothesis.

Pepsi Max = fabulous drink.

Certainly puts a stop to the sugar cravings for sure.

Another trick to stop sugar cravings is to eat sugar free jelly/jello.

I agree.  Pepsi max is pretty badass.  In 20 years, research will probably show that all diet sodas are bad for you somehow... but until then...

It bothers me when people use the term 'theory' in everyday colloquialism when they really mean hypothesis. This is why people are confused when scientists use the word Theory. Perhaps they should exchange it with the word 'fact' for everyday use outside the scientific community.

I thought the problem wasn't in the fact that it was 0 calories but in the fact that sodas are carbonated and carbonation was hindering the absorption process of nutrients.
Correct me if this 'study' was proven wrong in the meantime
