The best heavyweight boxer in history, never trained with weights.
-
Bowflex worked fine for him
-
Professional boxers rarely train with bench presses, squats, curls, etc. They're training is more concentrated on hand speed, footwork, endurance, and core strength training.
Out of all the weight classes, heavyweights use free weights more often. No weight limit to worry about in case they gain muscle and added weight.
-
All depends on the fighter/athlete and how long they've played with weights.
Roy Jones Jr. lifted his entire career, Floyd Mayweather lifted on HBO 24/7 at the "fitness club" lol.
All depends..... Mosley was on his high school lifting team and still lifts.
I would say if you are late in the game adding weight training with boxing it will hurt.
If it's been part of your workout since early on, I see no problems with it as long as you don't go for the overly diesel power lifter route.
Trainer Manny Steward once said it's the heavy style weight training that can present a problem as UPINTHEM pointed out below.
Slows down the "fast twitch" fibers needed to snap shots. Mike Tyson he said probably was the only guy he's ever seen that was overly bulky/stocky/muscular/compact that defied that rule.
He mentioned this during a Jeff lacy fight. There was no reason for Jeff to bulk like that at that weight class ever imo.
-
Ole Cassius.....with they would lock him and Joe Frazier in a room today.

It's noticeable with his paper thin muscles.

Are you saying if a boxer started out early lifting weights he would be ok with the muscluarity hence it wouldnt slow him down but if waiting until later then it may hamper him?

yes.
I feel if you already had weight training introduced to you earlier on, your boxing ability is not likely to take a hit as you progress from teenage years to adulthood.
Example: Evander Holyfield ..another guy that lifted since day one boxing. He up'd his game as a pro and hired Lee Haney....and we all know Evander used to take mofo's to the woodshed back in the day.

Agreed on Evander. Now Ken Norton was muscular but had an unorthodox style broke Ali's jaw once was that due to his strength?

Ken had nice power and distributed it nicely, so I would say that helped him out along with his shot selection.
But you can easily get your jaw broken if you have your mouth open (not biting down on the mouthpiece) by a light puncher.

I was in the university boxing club for a semester in college (never fought, I just did the workouts like the pussy that I am). I found it be very hard on my shoulders. I think it would be difficult to train for boxing and also do any meaningful press work.

My trainer was old school and didn't let me train with weights ,he used to tell me that it was going to slow me down , I believed him then I don't believe that now. .
This is me when I was 16 yo , 125lbs training (boxing ) 3-4 hs a day , I did do pushups and ton of sit ups ,my shoulders and back were decent but my legs and arms were small.

Nice point man, have you boxed before or hit the bags? Hitting heavy bag is a great cardio and shoulder/tricep workout.
