Its a glorified stair stepper in my opinion and I don't see the benefit from having this machine over a standard leg press in as it prob would coast around 2-3000 dollars for it.

I haven't bought any weights in a while and was looking to add a pair of olympic 45's.
They wanted over 200 bucks, that's ridiculous. This stuff is so expensive nowadays.

Well, if you are doing alternating press movement which is what that contraption does, then its no different from doing the same thing on a Stair Stepper. You can add more weight of course but it would be a very uncomfortable movement as well as pretty dangerous. Better to do squats with both legs for even development of the quadriceps

I do sell other brands but there's nothing wrong with Body Solid. They have a great line of home and commercial equipment and its a lot better priced than other companies. They don't sell any fancy machines like belt squats machines or etc but they'll kill any company when it comes to your basic Power Rack or Smith Machine.
If you're putting together a training studio or gym, its hard to properly equip everything from just one company. You have to do your research and chose the equipment best for your goals.

I don't agree with the BS part, but your last words a very true. Problem is that most gym owners rather go for the price than a good "portfolio" of equipment. From what I saw on the vids Bev Francis Powerhouse did a very good job on that.

all these powerfliter types do their repetitions in a manner that takes out muscle involvement as much as possible.. what is she working, hips glutes lower bakc and a little bit of lwer quad? that looks like an awesome machine there, but close up the stanc a little bit and get all the way down, utilizing your legs as much as possible... thats a squat.... not that quarter rep hip gesture..

The first thing a prospect looks at is the equipment because that's what they see when they walk into a facility. They look at the equipment, pictures on the wall, how clean the facility is, what amenities it has, etc. Your facility will determine your clientele much more than the trainer itself. Serious Powerlifters expect to see Forza Racks and competition bench presses while senior citizens and housewives want shiny expensive equipment with a weight stack.
So give me a break, Joe, that's just common sense

You make a good point, but think about it though, technically, the start position with the knees bent is the RIGHT way, because a regular squat you are doing the negative first before the actual movement. Where as the start with the knees bent, you are pushing out first, then doing the negative.
Its like barbell bench press and machine bench press!

You're correct about that initial contracted or stretched position.
As long as the number of positive movements equals the number of negatives I don't think it matters what that -so called- start position is. What does matter is that you start in a safe position (i.e. your strongest position) so that you have a chance to estimate whether you can make those x number of reps or not. The main problem I have with those machines is that safety issue.

Items like power racks and bench press don't have to be brand new. Since there's no real moving parts on either piece of equipment, being a used one for the most part is more economical.
However, when I do open my studio everything will be brand new other than the Forza Super Bench

Spot on. Also agree with you about the machine in the first post - most people would have different ROM and strength in each of their legs and will probably only increase the imbalance with time. I prefer doing leg presses on the standard machine, on which you can also do a unilateral movement if you want.

I love belt belt squats. Just a real nice movement, nice to get the bar off your shoulders sometimes and it transfers over to all types of power sports. Even the old dip belt style works well, if you have time to rig it up with different height boxes, etc....

because i am sure no one can ever train his right side THEN his left side or vise versa and give each side the exact same thing.. to be sure you train them exactly the same it's better to train them at the same time!!.. no one is perfectly accurate to do the exact same form for each side and to leave the exact same time between each reps in every set!!.. also i dont like to count reps while doing a set, i just go to failure..
i know this sounds stupid and a lot will see i am exaggerating but i really have a phobia against all one side exercises!!..

If your going to correct leg/hip imbalances the last thing you want is a machine. Machines are good for two things, isolation and peak contraction. In the real world there is never a time that you would use "isolation", isolation is not function so why attempt to correct a problem with a machine? Function in the real world is multi-joint and recruits other motor units to help move that particular function. Multi-joint unilateral movements should be included in EVERY program from bodybuilding to the elderly to the elite athlete, if not, you can expect a whole host of problems should an injury happend to one particular side moving up the kenetic chain.....in other words, you maybe fucked!

The majority of my training is functional. I rarely use equipment with clients and mainly use toning bands, medicine balls, and aerobic steps. This year I'll also be using TRX straps, Lerbert Bars and Straps. A lot of people think that toning bands are shitty but 10 minutes with me and I'll have them lying flat on the ground.
The only time I'll use any equipment is with a strength athlete and I'll then use a Cage Rack, Dumbbells Barbells, and Cable Equipment. I don't use any Smith Machines or other machines because its too restrictive and doesn't build muscle as well. Of course I still use toning bands and medicine balls with those athletes to build core conditioning.
When I do open up my facility, its only going to have maybe 3000-4000 dollars worth of equipment in there at most.

It is all sour grapes because he uses bands and other nonsense instead of good gym equipment. Guys like him are what the industry should be ashamed of. They have no proper qualifications and have very little experience in gyms. This self-styled personal trainer is a charlatan who shouldn't be advising anyone else about exercise. Thank goodness he doesn't have the funds to open his own facility. What a dreamer. $4000 is all he is going to spend on equipment. What a buffoon and total fool. Most well-equipped gyms spend $200,000 to over $1,000,000 on equipment.
The leg press with two sleds could be handy for athletes and anyone wanting a different leg machine. Ray Mentzer is the first guy I saw doing one-legged leg presses. Yep, they can be done and are quite effective. So there are all sorts of protocols that can be done on those machines. Exercise physiologists will like to have them for clients.
The reason you start the leg press with bent knees is because you have to get into the loaded machine to start with. So stoppers are placed about 1/3 of the way from lockout. If you didn't do this how would you load the plates on a machine? You have to pick a height that suits most people. Also, you need a safety catch that requires the sled to be lifted some distance before disengaging.
The sleds on the first machine look like copies of what I made back in 1987.

If Keith was right, he wouldn't be 600lb overweight and fighting for every breath he takes. Also, I'm not opening a fitness center, I'm opening a PT studio so my needs for rows of equipment are not even required.
A lot of personal trainers depend too much on equipment and simply standing next to a client counting reps. I'm a more interactive trainer and I use functional training methods to get people in shape fast.

Love the Prowler. I sell the East German Training Sled and the Prowler can be used similarly along with the added benefit of pushing it.

It really is sad that on line fools like Goodrum can obtain credentials and train other people. This is almost criminal because he has no idea about exercise physiology or exercise science.

Looks a lot better than some of the pics he's posted in the past and way better than the average person in the street he (supposedly) trains. I use a leg press machine like the one Joe posted on the first page.
The sled itself weighs a ton, and doing them unilaterally has helped bring up my twiglike legs quite a bit. :)

Well, if you are doing alternating press movement which is what that contraption does, then its no different from doing the same thing on a Stair Stepper. You can add more weight of course but it would be a very uncomfortable movement as well as pretty dangerous. Better to do squats with both legs for even development of the quadriceps
