Title: price of pizza has plummeted (Political?)
Post by: Eyeball Chambers on April 01, 2010, 04:57:04 PM
Back in the 90's and early 2000's you couldn't get a decent pizza for under $18.00.

Now $5.00 to $10.00 dollar pizzas dominate.

i don't agree...it has gone up in my area, as has everything else.

i'm talking about prices i have observed in pizza places in NY/CT..

You say that the price has fallen with such conviction...where is your evidence?

My evidence is Eyeball's first post.  I've noticed the same thing.

I like this answer to the question

I dont know where youre from, but in nyc its still expensive as fukc. unless you order dominoes or a place like that where they use cardboard for most of the ingredients. there will always be a demand for pizza, there will always be stoned college kids and people too lazy to cook.

there used to be Uno here in CT...No more these days...how much for a pizza there?

As americas economy dives the attempt to keep people from rioting will come from what has come to be known as BREAD AND CIRCUSES. This is an attempt at quelling uprisings in a society as thing go from bad to worst. The Romans put on shows, chariot races and made food cheap and available to everyone. So the same is being done in america now...notice as you said the falling prices on fast food. Notice a lot of sales at supermarkets, notice how trinkets and 99 cent stores are erupting everywhere in america? It is the CALM BEFORE THE STORM. Just as with the Romans you can only carry that on for so long before economically it can not be carried on any more. By then the corruption of the country and the crooks have walked off with so much and the financial ruination of the country is so complete that the nation falls soon thereafter. These cheap foods are an indicator of trouble ahead....

look at the pizza building cooking and delivery process....
it's gotten more efficient

instead of having some kid write down your info every time, then pass that paper to the kid cooking it, then having him roll the dough from fresh ingredients, cook it in a big oven, then give it to another kid to hop in his 84 oldsmobile and wasitng a lot of gas trying to find your house...

you have a computer telling a kid to pop pizza style A4 into an oven/Q unit.  The timer beeps, and another kid hops in his tercel and travels to 1 of 4 stops using his GPS unit to tell him the best path to take.

in my mba course on operations mgmt, we used the pizza prep and delivery process, as well as variations made behind the scene which can lead to greater overall efficiency, as an example of how to run any business.

the ingredients are cheap. its the process you pay for.  and technology has made the process more efficient by a mile.

I agree

My girlfriend and her husband used to own a pizzeria that they had her brother-in-law run for them.
It was a very consistent source of mad-money for her. Whenever she felt like going shopping,
...she'd pop into the pizzeria and help herself to the till. The profit margins were just craaaaazy!!!
It boggles my mind how that place could support her shopping whims, which were very high end,
support her brother-in-laws family, and still turn a profit. The money she pulled out of there was crazy!

Hahahaha... she is! But that's why they bought the pizzeria to begin with... to keep her in pocket change.

You should have seen what a witch she was to be around when she found a receipt from European Jewellers for a very expensive piece of jewellry, ...and she didn't get any jewellry for Christmas! tHen she waited for 2 months to see if she would get it for Valentines Day. ...she didn't. She was not a happy camper, 'cause she knew exactly what that meant... hubby had a mistress.  lol.

The decline / collapse of the Roman Empire took centuries. I am wondering how fast the US decline / collapse will be? Perhaps it will be much faster because we are living in different times where a lot can happen in a much shorter timespan.

Regarding the price of pizza: A decent extra large pizza here in Michigan is still around $16-$20. That is one with a few meat / vegetable toppings. I have yet to see a decent Buddy's Pizza for $10. Once or twice my wife have found coupons that brought the price down by 50%. But they are not always available. Shield's pizzas are about as awesome as Buddy's. Not sure if they are available outside Michigan. California Pizza Kitchen has a great tasting avocado w/ chicken pizza. The crust is also a lot thinner than the deep dish Buddy's and Shield's pizzas. However those deep dish pizzas are great!

In NYC, Pizza is between $2 - $3 a slice.   If you want chicken or other crap it could be anywhere from $3.50 - $5.00 a slice.

So why don't they have it anymore if it was so profitable? Was it because of the alleged affair?

I don't see the price getting cheaper  unless your getting some shitbox pizza. A good 4-5 topping pizza around my place is still around 18 bucks. I could get one from a 2-1 barf pie dealer that's way cheaper but like I said it tastes like ass.

Speaking of Pizza - check this out.  This NYC to a tee back in the day.  I remember those days like it was yesterday.  I grew up in a Italo-American hood in the Bronx, N.Y. and it was like this.

i've noticed the same and wondered...
1) either they were making an ARM and a LOAD off of us back then
OR
2) they r using WAY lower quality ingredients combined with subtle changes to the size ....ie take an inch off the diameter and add a bit less cheese and sauce and make it "lighter" which makes them enable the price cuts...

however top chains like ZeePizza still charge around $22 a pie

So why don't they have it anymore if it was so profitable? Was it because of the alleged affair?

If i recall correctly, it had something to do both with the property the business was housed in, and the brother-in-law taking a job elsewhere.

She didn't care about the affair so much as the fact that the mistress was getting better jewellry than her. lol. The affair had nothing to do with it. Her marriage was pretty much dead anyway. They only stuck together for the sake of their parents, and their kids, and providing a stable home environment for their kids growing up. Tthey had a workable arrangement among themselves, lived their separate lives discreetly, and no one was the wiser that the marriage was dead, ...not even their kids... until the day she said she couldn't live the lie anymore and wanted a divorce. He said "fine no problem. we'll sell the house and split everything up", ...and she said "Nope. keep the house I'll move into an apartment, when the kids move out, then we sell it." Two years later when her son moved into his own place and their daughter went off to college, they sold the house and split everything up. It was one of the most amicable divorces I'd ever seen. Her husbands behaviour throughout the whole process made him look like an absolute saint (especially since she was the one who left him), and we were all wondering if she was insane to be divorcing such a wonderful man. There were times when she asked herself that as well. It was just one of those arranged marriages where she married as a teenager, and went from her father's house straight to her husbands house, and she never got to know who she was, and they never really grew together. It was her duty to obey her parents and marry the man they selected for her, and it was his duty to marry the woman his parents had selected for him, start a family and carry on the family name. Neither of them was ever really happy, and when they turned the corner with their daughters health challenge... there was really nothing keeping them together. After what they went through with their daughter, they had the strength to tell both their parents to back off and they will do as they pleased with their lives, even if it meant divorce. it was their marriage to dismantle if that what they chose to do.
