i hope these rednecks down here appreciate this while they are over a BP office daily picking up those checks, because mc cain or bush damn sure wouldnt shake up an oil company with their personal oil assets at stake. thoughts?
The numbers already astound. As much as 60,000 barrels of oil gush from the Gulf of Mexico’s floor each day. Some 1,300 miles of shoreline are threatened, more if currents carry runaway oil around Florida’s tip and up the Atlantic coast.
The livelihoods of shrimpers, fishermen, restaurateurs, hoteliers and small businesses are on hold for who knows how long. And then there are the waterfront property owners who now expect the white beaches and blue-green waters at their doorsteps will turn toxic.
So what’s to be thought of the $20 billion fund BP Plc was persuaded to set up?
Call it a pretty good start. A shakedown? Oh, please.
Texas Republican Joe Barton called it that at yesterday’s House Energy subcommittee hearing, one of the few moments that BP Chief Executive Officer Tony Hayward wasn’t the target of members’ wrath.
But how can it be a shakedown, when BP had already pledged to pay all legitimate claims? If that was a sincere offer, then the fund is simply an apparatus to insure that it keeps its promise and does so fairly and more quickly.
It gives BP’s word credibility, something sorely lacking as evidenced by the number of times the company has pledged to operate safely only to host a deadly refinery explosion, a major spill in Alaska and now this catastrophe in the Gulf.
Gushing Crude
The company still can’t say with certainty when the crude will stop gushing, where it will go or how much damage will have been done by then. But at least the folks suffering along the Gulf know now they will be compensated for what the company’s apparent recklessness took from them. That confidence won’t save an oil-drenched pelican, but it should at least ease some anxiety.
We don’t know what President Barack Obama or any other administration official said during the four-hour come-to-Jesus meeting in the White House with BP this week. Nor can we say how accepting BP was of the escrow account and new claims process. No allegations of waterboarding have surfaced.
There are reports that BP wanted to cap the escrow account and eventually caved. Well, good.
It would have been impossible to set a ceiling now, anyway, given that oil is still pouring out at a rate no one even knows.
Storm Surge
Then there are the too-horrific-to-contemplate consequences if a hurricane should blow through. Even a minor storm surge would wash the crude miles deeper into low-lying wetlands.
If the escrow fund had been capped, no one victimized by this disaster could have been certain they would be made whole.
The $20 billion dollar figure looks big but shrinks when viewed against the harm already done and the potential for far more.
Oil still lingers in Alaska from the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill, which now seems like a mere puddle compared to this.
Besides, the escrow account will pay for all sorts of claims beyond the ones submitted in a process headed by Kenneth Feinberg, who oversaw payouts from the Sept. 11 victim compensation fund. It will also cover judgments and settlements from lawsuits, which victims are still free to pursue. There are more than 230 of those pending, many of them aiming for class- action status.
Plus, the fund will pay for damages to natural resources as well as local and state response costs.
Drilling Moratorium
It doesn’t include the $100 million that BP is setting aside for oil workers laid off because of the administration’s moratorium on offshore drilling. Nor will it go toward the $500 million BP committed for a 10-year project to study the effects of oil and gas pollution.
Eventual fines or penalties, which are bound to be substantial, will have to come out of some other pocket, too.
For a shakedown, this one came with terms that aren’t especially difficult. It isn’t as if BP has to find $20 billion in cash by next Tuesday, or even within the next 12 months.
A mere $5 billion is required each year for the next four. That is less than the canceled dividends, projected at $7.5 billion for the last three quarters of this year.
In case the annual contributions run short, BP is setting aside $20 billion in U.S. assets initially.
This will turn out to be the best thing to happen to BP since the Deepwater Horizon exploded on April 20. Investors showed they like it by pushing the share price up in the wake of the announcement.
It is also the first credible piece of good news for the people and businesses of the G

I've never met a conservative that makes sense....BTW I'm not a lib. I've stated many times I'm independent (but support President Obama)...I'd run your ignorant ass into the ground. It'd be best if you got someone else to debate on your behalf. Go back to weight room meathead and leave the academics and thinking to me and just vote for whomever is the Republican like a good little sheep.

Dude, I don't care if you're a Rhodes Scholar, the fact you even still support him proves your ignorance and the fact you haven't added anything even in the way of a logical defense for this marxist pig leaves much to desire about your academics AND your thinking. ok yes its a book. its called "____ of ______" By ____ ______. :)
right now its not so important that you know the name or who wrote it..
do you know what evidence was provided to support the claim the capitalism would work? what studies did the author cite?
surely capitalism must have been based off of some kind of proper education in economics and also real world experience of the markets, free trade, and some examples of it working as well.
do you know if that book contained any of those things?
or was it simply a philosophical work done by a man with no experience in economics??
do you know the author of that book was also best friends with one of the most famous and influential atheist thinkers of all time (david hume) ???

you can not choose for them. your actions(the planets) do not affect yourself, but future generations. the government has every right to, and in principle is required to stop all of the combustion of fossil fuels (with a small exception for emergency uses only.. natural disasters, life threatening situations, etc)

Seriously man, you are the same "kid" who lived off fish oil and was afraid to brush his teeth because of the carb count. You obviously have seen the error of your ways, and now seem to have a more appropriate way of living. Now, I say this because ever since you get a few props on the AAS board for giving decent advice, and people see you as Tbombz and not Candidate or Candizzle who most here tortured for years, you have developed an unsuiting air about you . You are 21 years old, you go to school and really have no real responsibilities, i.e. bills, wife, kids, taxes, etc. You are typical in the fact that a lot of young people tend to lean left on politics, but lean more to the center or right as they get older and acquire life experience. You need to grow up a bit and listen to what people have to say, without the condescending attitude and the ::) just because someone disagrees with you. 10 years from now, when you have a mortgage, pay taxes out the ass, and pay upwards of $8 or more for a gallon of gas, you may be a lot closer to the Coach's way of thinking than you could have ever imagined. ;)

broseph, i was the youngest lead congressional intern on record. 16 years old i was working for REPUBLICAN congressman Richard Pombo. both working on official tasks (dealing with constituints and the press) and also on campaign issues. i worked for him becausei was super conservative.
most people lean "left" when they are young because they want to do what they want without gov. interference and dont like how uneven the money is spread out in this world. most people turn "right" as they age because they have kids and think the government should do the parenting for them.
i give a ::) because he asks a question with an obvious answer.

Well, thats good you were politiclly active at such a young age. Most kids can't say that and have no interest, but what you say is a bit flawed IMO. What do you think Cap and Trade and the health care bill are? Government interference on what you want to do, same with the Arizona law against illegals which the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT plans on suing over. And the statement about wanting the government to be the parents, I've honestly never even heard that one before so I have no clue what to say. And your ::) answer to Coach is as disputed as it is recognized, but I'm sure your Professore tell you otherwise. Life experience ;)

Tbombz, I'm on football field right now with about 40 kids but I have quick break. I told you that I just read parts of it I do remember the authors name was I think Ellen Woods (or something like that). I remember it was waaay off the charts liberal and you saying she was "best friends with an atheist confirms it. Ok, now give your "history" lesson with your liberal twist and I'll be happy to give you a life lesson on, well...life and what capitolism has done for me without the help from government assistance and from barely being able to pay my rent to owning my home on a beach without even thinking about usuing the government for help.

you show a huge amount of ignorance by acting like the words of college professors dont have any substance. who should we listen to, the scientists or the "politicians" with no expertise in any field whatsoever??
government restrictions and regulations within the economic sector are necessary to some degree. of course we want to allow all people as much freedoms as we possibly can. but the actions of coorporations/big business have global effects upon the people's abilities to live their lifes in the manner they desire. when a company is operating in a way the puts the nations economy in danger for its own benefit, that must be regulated. when people are acting in a way that puts the earth's future at risk, then that must be regulated. everyone has basic rigths to life liberty and the pursuit of happyness, and the governments duty is to protect those rights from being infringed upon.

um.. youve killed yourself again.
try again.. the book is called "the wealth of nations" and its by adam smith. universally recognized as the source of capitalism and smith is regarded as the father of moder economics.
he had zero education in economics. he was a moral philosopher. he based the whole idea of capiptalism on the assumption that the owners of resources would use them in the way that is most profitable to the country.
an idea alan greenspan recently admitted to as being faulty.. "ignorant to the greed of man" ;)

First off, college professors are notorious for leaning to the left. If all professors leaned to the right and that was universal, your thinking would probably be much different, but thats neither here nor there. Professors do have a lot of substance in what they say, but when what they say is heavily slanted in one direction, they lose some credibility and are more or less pushing an agenda.
And Government regulation is only an excuse used by politicians on both sides of the aisle as a power grab, nothing more, nothing less. You are delusional if you think any politician gives a f*ck about your basic rights or the earths fortitude to sustain life, only an ideologist thinks that way.
-
lol.. if the majority of the highly educated people tend to think a certain way, isnt it clear thats probably the better way to think?
what is "left" anyways? it seems "left" is someone who pushes for human rights and economic equality. ;)
-
who is better judge of how to regulate economy... an economist, or a "politician"?
who is a better judge of how to regulate environment...a climatologist, or a "politician"?
-
Whatever man, you obviously know it all already so why even have a discussion about it. ::)

I accept your apology. Now, you base your knowledge on learning a one sided philosophy of liberalism as it translates to socialism, without knowing what it's like to really work for a living, get a pay check and have 35-40% of it taken (before Obama, now it will be more) and the rest left to feed your family. When you FINALLY realize that, you MIGHT understand. Until then, you're reading the rhetoric that will wind up hurting you in the long run. If you can't see whats going on RIGHT NOW then keep reading your blind literature.

Don't know, don't remember. Find me proof that capitalism doesn't work and compare it to socialistic societies that have failed and are collapsing. Time and time again history has shown that living in a socialist world has collapsed or is collapsing. Again, you have no personal experience with the exception of reading and listening to left wing and socialist garbage.
On here I have posted proof that 100% contradicts what you think and what every other socialist might think in the way of taxes, government take overs and especially "Universal Health care" which has PROVEN to be a failure in this and other countries yet you still support it, why do you support it? because you believe the hard working successful people have some sort of an obligation to have their hard earned money TAKEN to have redistributed to people to are too lazy to get it on their own.....right? You can make all the arguments you want, quote all the people you want but it all boils down to commonsense. Don't TAKE what is rightfully mine. If you can't work for it and create your own wealth then you don't deserve it!
But don't sit here, a 21 year old kid, with no job, still living with his parents, admittedly don't vote and probably doesn't pay taxes and tell me how the world should work. Fuck!
-
why dont you check out the current state of the european economies and compare them to our own
-
why dont you check out the current state of the european economies and compare them to our own
I have and they're fucked, just like where we are heading. Right now (and I believe this) by 2014 our deficit will out do our national GDP...that isn't good Tbombz, that mean YOU will have to bear the brunt of paying that back. Why don't you ask one of socialist friends if they would be willing to handle their own money like that.
-
sorry brosephg, europe has been killing the usa for a couple decades now.. GDP is not a sign of economic health for anyone but the treasury and the big corporations, its about standard of living for all citizens... something most all european countries have had on the usa for quite some time..
-
So the next time I want to see where our GDP stands I should look in the sports section!
