If you've read any of the numerous books about the Chicago Bulls of the 1990s then you know that Scottie Pippen is kind of funny about money. Raised in a poor household, Pippen jumped at the chance to sign a long-term contract prior to the 1991-92 season, choosing the security of a long deal over being paid what he was worth. Throughout his career, Pippen would endorse anything and everything, assuring that the money kept flowing in. Following the end of his playing career, Pippen was involved in a number of bad business deals that left him nearly broke.
One of the notable money mistakes that Pippen made was the purchase of a $4 million Gulfstream jet in 2002. Due to a missed inspection, the jet's engine needed $1 million worth of repairs shortly after the purchase. Rather than paying that, the jet was grounded, making it the world's most expensive paper weight. Pippen sued his attorney for the missed inspection and Monday was awarded a settlement of $2 million. He was pretty happy about it. From the Chicago Sun-Times' Lisa Donovan:
One-time Chicago Bulls star Scottie Pippen dissolved in tears Monday and gasped as a Cook County jury awarded him a $2 million verdict in a jet deal that went south.
Pippen had sued two attorneys at the Chicago law firm Pedersen & Houpt for malpractice, alleging they failed to closely monitor his purchase of the jet, which was grounded only months after the 2002 purchase. [...]
"I don't want to really say anything, I'm just exhausted and tired," a red-eyed but smiling Pippen said before leaving the courthouse with wife Larsa Pippen.
You know how they say you can't have your multimillion dollar jet and eat it to? Well, tell them that they're wrong. And also that that is a weird saying.
But really, this is good news. Yeah, it's kind of hard to feel bad for a guy filing lawsuits because he didn't get to use his super expensive airplane, but with all the 1990s basketball players that have been going broke these days, it's nice that something good actually happened for one of them.
That being said, I think we've all learned a valuable lesson here. Whenever you spend $4 million on a jet, make sure it works first.

the former No. 4 draft pick is seriously in debt. As the Associated Press reports, Curry defaulted on a $575,000 loan with an 85 percent interest rate, which can only happen in Nevada, and has been ordered to pay back $1.2 million to Allstar Capital Inc., the world's most ironic loan service.

Not to be mean or anything but first tell me where you bank so I can get that interest rate. And two, to be more realistic lets say he gets lucky and gets 5% so that would cut you figure in half.

Broke?? He's lost 120 million due to bad investments and people taking advantage of him but he still has about 15 million left. He's not in a cardboard box or anything like that..... ::)
He's a basketball player, not a lawyer or financial expect so he's more likely to be taken advantage of. One thing is for sure, he proved that he can play without Jordan with win NBA Championship rather than being considered a sidekick and that's why he's now in the Hall of Fame.

He won $2m, but the lawyers fee eat that up lol

so he buys a $4M plane, but doesn't have $1M to fix the engine? How did he expect to pay for fuel, pilots, fees, licensing???
amazing logic

The attorney handling the purchase didn't schedule any inspection of the plane prior to the purchase. If they had done that then there would have never been a problem to begin with. Scottie was smart to have it done that way but he just got some lawyers that only wanted to push the deal through so they could get their commission.

Yeah, lil Scottie was too busy melting down when he didn't get the last shot that went to Kukoc as he "carried" the Bulls to nothing......

Nah, can't bother, I'm sure he put up good numbers....but flamed out in the playoffs....probably a migraine.
The whole deal is this.....you could have had 10 or 15 guys that could have played Scottie's "Robin" to MJ's "Batman", but not one single player could have filled MJ's role in that partnership.....not one.....you agree?

Tellin' it like it is...
At his income level, he could afford to take a charter jet to just about anywhere he needed to go in the world. At his income level, just like you or I, he could not afford a Gulfstream, not even a used one!
MAYBE he could've considered an Eclipse...$1 million out the door:
The thing is, though, people who've never owned planes typically don't understand that on-call pilots aren't part of the package and neither do storage and routine maintenance costs.

Fawk naw....he invented the point foward...locked down magic...one of the 50 greatest players...they dont just throw that shit around...hall of fame 2010
check it out
Michael Jordan retired before the 1993–94 NBA season, and in his absence Pippen emerged from Jordan's shadow. That year, he earned All-Star Game MVP honors and led the Bulls in scoring, assists, and the entire league in steals, averaging 22.0 points, 8.7 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 2.9 steals, 1.9 three-pointers, and 0.8 blocks per game, while shooting 49.1% from the field and a career-best 32% from the three-point line. For his efforts, he earned the first of three straight All-NBA First Team nods, and he finished third in the MVP voting. The Bulls finished the season with 55 wins, only two fewer than the year before.
Pippen finished the 1994–95 season leading the Bulls in every major statistical category: assists, rebounds, points, steals, and blocks; Pippen is one of only four players in NBA history to accomplish this feat.[1][8]
Jordans nutsack my ass (wait that didnt come out right)....PiP was a beast in his own right

You have 10% interests in USA ?
this just shows how dumb many at GB are.
who cares what the interest % actually is. If its 10% then its $400k per year, if its 5% its $200k per year. If its 2.5% then its $100k per year.
no one is broke if they are getting $100k per year for doing nothing.
heck even $50k per year.
surely bank interest is better than 1.25% PA in the US?
the point is that at some point this guy had MUCH more than the $4m he spent on this jet. And if he simply put it all, or some, into a bank, then he could easily live off the interest.
And not do a thing.
But dumb asses are greedy mofos.
so they go for high risk strategies and then cry victim when and if it goes pear shaped. and the opposite it true also- donald trump for instance didnt get rich due to brilliance- yet he doesnt mind acting like it or having others revere him. right place, right time, educated choice, then some luck and BAM- youve got so much money that you can afford to make loads of bad decisions for every good one.
and so on..blah blah..
-
I just did a search for "white athletes in money trouble" and it doesn't pull up much. I was hoping that the numbers might be semi similar to the black athletes in money trouble, but its not even close. I wonder why, maybe because there are more black athletes I guess :-\

You'd be surprised at how low interest rates are on standard accounts here.
BUT, for someone who's got better-than-average cash to invest, an 8% annual return is considered to be a conservative estimate and 6% is considered VERY conservative in many financial circles.
So, on $4 million, he easily and safely collects $360,000 a year in interest.
-

I think your also leaving out the fact that their managers and lawyers no how to manipulate the black athletes. It's no secrets they come from poor backrounds, so they got no one in their family or community to get advice from, something whites usually have a load of. So they go to agents try to invest it wisely and at the same time avoid paying taxes. This is of course were the lawyers get a huge cut. The easy victims to lawyers who no how to pray on black ignorance, to the max. They get them to invest in toxic investments just to get a cut. Just look into retirement portfolio's for white people and you'll see have the commerce sector knows how to manipulate other peoples savings.
-
i grew up idolizing the bulls, and lived through the hard times without jordan.
yeah, pippen was great, but watching the bulls without Michael for those couple years was like watching old people fuck.
Scottie's stats don't matter. Lebron puts up 50 points a game, but gets destroyed in the playoffs and gets his mom fucked by his teammate. Only the rings matter, and if you need a ring, Michael's the guy to go to. Like Treyson said, he made the players around him better. Shit, an assist from Jordan could make my sloppy ass look awesome.
-
He won two more NBA championships without Jordan.... ::)

First of all, it’s these “financial advisers”, who more often than not SHANK these pro athletes for their money. Many of them have lost a lot, trying to invest in certain businesses (i.e. former Saints running back, Deuce McCallister, lost big time bucks, when his car dealership went south).
Second, as for spending on “bling”, that happens across the board. If you think white athletes aren’t doing the same, you are on crack. How much money do you think guys like Tony Mandarich, Ryan Leaf, Lex Luger. The latter reminds me: if you want to see a laundry list of WHITE athletes who have blown their dough over the years, look at some ex-pro wrestlers.
-
Does the name Ryan Leaf ring a bell?
Hey bro...Actually i was listening to Dan Patrick and he said something about putting money away and he wasnt broke. I think he was caught stealing because he couldnt get an RX for those pills he was taking..But i think he is fine with money...well according to the DP show

so they go for high risk strategies and then cry victim when and if it goes pear shaped. and the opposite it true also- donald trump for instance didnt get rich due to brilliance- yet he doesnt mind acting like it or having others revere him. right place, right time, educated choice, then some luck and BAM- youve got so much money that you can afford to make loads of bad decisions for every good one.
and so on..blah blah..
Hahaha. You obviously don't have very much money.

The latter reminds me: if you want to see a laundry list of WHITE athletes who have blown their dough over the years, look at some ex-pro wrestlers.
of course white athletes have blown fortunes as well. wrestlers really arent a good example because most of them (save for a lucky few) make money for a few years...but then their life spins into a disarray of drugs, injuries, and emotional problems.
white ball players no doubt buy nice things for themselves.......but to try and argue the point that there is not a unique situation with black players is ridiculous. you see multiple stars from the 90s, not journeymen who played a few years, stars who made tens of millions...............g oing broke. and it has to do with this culture of uber-rich super-conspicuous-consumption among young black athletes that has spilled over into the realm of professional sports from the hip-hop community.
this is not even a point that could be contended............... ..i took a course in college called "basketball and black masculinity" taught by an ultra-liberal, black activist-PHD-type guy...........and he devoted an entire part of the course to exactly this topic. this guy is a militant black dude...........and even he acknowledged that this problem is pretty rampant amongst young black athletes who quickly come into wealth
white guys typically buy a house or two, some cars.............these black players have to support whole fucking entourages......many cars, "Jew-ry" (as they pronounce jewlery), usually a couple of baby mama's......list goes on and on
hey, there is nothing wrong with acknowledging that certain problems are more prevalent among certain groups........
now for the sake of fairness i wll say somethign harsh, yet true, about whites...........almost a hundred percent of the time, molesters, pedophiles, kiddie pornographers, and general child sex offenders are white males.......so are almost all crazy shootin g spree guys, and almost all serial killers (although other races seem to be catching up)
.......

Scottie was my favorite player growing up :'( He went to some bumfuck NAIA school in Arkansas and became an NBA All-Star. Best defensive player I've ever seen.

Jordans nutsack my ass (wait that didnt come out right)....PiP was a beast in his own right
mal, you know what I said was true.....Jordan + any of 10 or 15 other guys during that era = title. I truly don't believe that about Pippen.....and just so ya know Larry Bird truly invented the Point Forward....6.3 APG for his career....about 1 more than Pippen..... 8)

He won two more NBA championships without Jordan.... ::)
No, he didn't you idiot.
He played one year in Houston with Barkley and Olajuwon and was bounced in the first round of the playoffs. Traded to Portland and played there for four seasons. His Portland teams were loaded with talent but had no leaders. No titles there either.
Pippen was one of my favorite players to watch back when the NBA was great. Pippen had so much versatility with his defense, rebounding, and assists. Jordan wouldn't have own any of his 6 NBA titles without playing alonside Pippen. And Jordan would be the FIRST person to tell you that. Sure, he was a head case sometimes but the guy could flat out play and deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. One of the 50 greatest players? Probably not. I think Dominique Wilkins should have made that list over Pippen.

I love it when someone puts Goodrum in his place.
By the way I was lucky enough (get ready for a name dropping) to play with a few pretty good guys in a celebrity vs firemen/policemen basketball game in Boca Raton Florida back in 88 or so. On my team (or I was on their team) was Dr. J (also my golf partner), John Havlechick and Rick Barry. It was awesome watching these guys screw around and still look good. And Dr. J passed me the ball and I made a basket.

You CAN say that about pro wrestlers, because it has unfortunately applied, not to the guys wallowing in the bush leagues, but many of the wrestlers who were major starts in WWE or WCW (such as the aforementioned Lex Luger).
this is not even a point that could be contended............... ..i took a course in college called "basketball and black masculinity" taught by an ultra-liberal, black activist-PHD-type guy...........and he devoted an entire part of the course to exactly this topic. this guy is a militant black dude...........and even he acknowledged that this problem is pretty rampant amongst young black athletes who quickly come into wealth
That tends to happen with nearly ANYONE who comes into wealth quickly. White kids who come from the farm or from the trailer park often have that same problem.
white guys typically buy a house or two, some cars.............these black players have to support whole fucking entourages......many cars, "Jew-ry" (as they pronounce jewlery), usually a couple of baby mama's......list goes on and on.
Same thing happens to white players. It just doesn't get advertised as much. That how many of them end up getting into drugs, via members of their entourages. It ain't a race thing; it's a combination of too much money, too much time, and hanging with the wrong people.

Yeah when they go from nothing to millionares over night literally....to them it might be like an endless money pot compared from where they come from

TRUE story about pippen...
this maybe just a 1 time thing and not a 100% declaration on his intelligence, but i remember years ago when in chicago i was at a "johnny rocket's" hamburger joint shooting the breeze with the waitress in the nearly empty place and she gets a call for carry out..
over and over she tried to explain what was on a certain burger and the person on the line just wasn't getting it.... she had to explain in slow motion slow voice what was on the burger, what it came with, how much it would cost and when this person could pick it up...
finally after 10 minutes of what should have been at most a 1 minute conversation. she gets off the phone and says "OH MY GOD, what a fricking moron! talk about no comprehension!...
fast forward 30 minutes later, guess who strolls in to pick up their burger and fries? you guessed it.

Im not sure what you're referring to Vincent Kennedy Goodrum.
I'm not warring with you, only stating facts.
You've outlived your "enemy's" so you're the vicror.
Also did Goatboy pass away, I thought he was banned and permanently left the boards.

These black athletes grew up poor and have no concept of money or math. They live like their money is unlimited. Then the cash flow ends it's over. Think they would invest in sound diversified investments and live modest to their temporary income. Nope they live large and right up to what they make.
