I hear this all the time but never receive an explanation? So some guys that are smart in nutrition, please enlighten me...BTW be prepared for follow-up questions.

squats are known to be better for legs than leg presses, although basically it's the same movement except presses are easier
shakes are too easy and convienient, instead dry oatmeal and unflavored chicken breast will make you bigger
actually some supps are just as good, but just think if you told a beginner that. then he would never eat food, just loads of vpx and muscletech crap. and personally my body will get tired of the same protein shakes week after week, and my body just quits responding, food never fails or contains proprietary blends

so why would you rely on shakes, when you have real food?
........i drink 6-7 shakes a day, and only eat around 2-3 meals a day......i drink shakes because i honestly like them....and cause i only sleep about 2.5 hours a night, and if i cooked every time i was hungry i would likely end up killing someone...

All the guys I see who look great at any age and have excellent muscle memory get the majority of their protein from whole foods.
I'd guess shakes actually hydrate you far better. Everyone here knows damn well how fast changes happen when shakes are discontinued but it makes perfect sense considering how muscle holds water better than fat. Shakes are a lot easier, though. :)

i question this also
i read the other day somewhere that we only absorb like 13-17% of protein from shakes.........it this bullshit...........is this the same with whole food
and does that mean that if we drink a 200 calorie protein shake..........we only absorb 13=17% of the calories from it,........or is that number just how much of the protein could be utilized to promote anabolism and the rest of the calories go toward gluco-neogenesis or whatever
if you were to simplify you diet, and drink all you protein through shakes.............woudl the result be different then if you were to get them from real food (i know whole foods have vitamins and minerals not present in shakes) but save for that is there really a difference???
someone with knowledge please speak on this???

From what i have gathered, it has to do with micro nutrients. When you eat whole foods like chicken or beef or beans you dont just get the proteins, you get a ton of other micro nutrients that shakes and other processed foods just dont have.
could be wrong but makes sense to me. You are just healthier by eating more natural foods then processed.
One a side note, i drink the hell outa myoplex (cookies and cream) ready drinks from HEB. I guess i have been conditioned for past decade or so to drink protein shakes if you cant get a good meal in.......

You nailed it, plus I'm sure there are some benefits to your body processing and breaking down the food as opposed to just drinking the liquid shake and it being absorbed (different forms of absorption)

apart from the thermic effect eating whole foods provide, and the feeling of satiation, there is no difference from getting your protein from whole foods or shakes.

Whole foods are also more thermogenic that supplement shakes.

There was this Flex article years ago on Chris Duffy....he was a pro at the time and he went on and on about how he loved the shakes....he literally lived on them....8 or 10 a day of these calorie-monsters per day

well certainly a calorie is a calorie and a gram of protein from chicken is a gram of protein from a shake.
raw plants and animals contain a huge variety of known phytonutrients/micronutrients and probably a whole lot more unknown as well.
every year we find out tons more new information about the benefits of certain comounds in certain plants. these compounds/phytonutrients were always present and the benefits always accompanying.
what happens in 10 years when we know the key to disease prevention is a diet rich in raw plants?? only the people who know this information reap the benefits, or would the people who had been eating this way ignorant of the great benefit also get the disease prevention as well???

Have you ever scanned the ingredient list on a bucket of protein powder? Can't pronounce half the chemicals in there. The amount of lab made substances/perservatives in powders are one reason why whole foods are better.
