It's a great finisher at the end of your weight work out or a quick metabolic workout when you don't have time to do some "cardio", I wouldn't rely on it as regular cardio, Intervals of 20-30min are much better for fat burning in the long run.

How much is "much better"? Some of us don't have much time to kill.

Typical getbigger does Tabata on an empty stomach with his personal best in bench pressing, squatting and deadlifts, then calls his company to see if the secretary does everything right and then goes to fuck a few supermodels.

I remember you told Ron to do this and the guy hasn't broken a sweat in over 15 years (except while eating).  He'd drop from a heart attack for sure.  You can't tell a totally unfit individual to go like the devil is after him.  At least include some disclaimer about maintaining a safe heart rate.

I know you swear by Tabata JNN but it's not suitable for some people.

while this is true, because the workout is very taxing, its results are amazing

...and this is my opinion of Tabata. I like to do Tabata a few times a week and normal cardio a few times. Complete and balanced results. BUT you have to have some serious drive to do it effectively.

this is what i like to do

I like to do 3 tabata runs during the week in the morning on empty stomach before breakfast.  I go to a local track to do it.  Pretty simple, sprint as hard as i can for twenty, jog for ten

then I do a tabata circuit after my weight workouts in the PM.  The circuit I usually make up that day and is mostly consitent of kettlebells, a burpee variation and some sort of compound, explosive movement (like power snatches)

two things to keep in mind:
- Using the Ratings of Perceived Exertion, on a scale from 1-10, you should be looking to be at a 11 during your "sprint" rounds
- invest in a "gymboss" interval timer (www.gymboss.com) or get a tabata app on your smart phone.  Trust me, you'll need it.  If you decide to do tabata runs at a track then I strongly you use a gymboss timer over a cell phone app though

I don't recommend it. It's too much if you're just getting back into things. You can burn yourself out. Fight the impatience and get your diet down first.

disturbia, why don't you just do what i did?

find a part of town where hot chicks jog, and then walk for a week, work up to a mile jog a week, then 2, etc.

i just ran 7.5 miles yesterday.  40 lbs gone (not in one day)

Tabata (Dr Tabata... Japanese Olympic/sports clinic) is one of the most effective methods of losing fat while maintaining muscle mass. 20 seconds of intense effort followed by a 10 second pause. Any where from 6 to 8 such cycles. No rest between cycles. When sprinting for 20 seconds, pause for 10 seconds which does not mean jogging (self defeating). Either have a complete rest in place or a very slow walk. Can do Tabata hitting a heavy bag, stair running, bodyweight squats, pushups, dips, etc.

Tabata is only one of many interval training protocols. In which lifting can blend in very well. BB's, DB's, Kettle Bells, machines, etc. Any interval system is an outstanding stamina (endurance+strength) program. From experience I would have to rate Tabata #1. Just my view, that's all.

Might also consider the old PHA system, an excellent method of reducing body fat while retaining muscle mass. And gaining unbelievable stamina.
