Title: Need a new car.... Advices please
Post by: TacoBell on July 21, 2010, 07:32:35 PM
Cliffs will likely be best so...

Time to get a new car, now.

When the hell did tahoe/avalanche/Yukon become 50 grand???

At the end of the year I'd be much more inclined to buy a large expensive suv as I can use the major tax advantages.

Considering a large pickup as there are write-offs there as well, ie nissan Titan or dodge ram...

If I get a pickup now, much less inclined to buy an suv at years end, which I'd prefer.

Thoughts?

I own a Titan and it is a huge improvement over the domestic sh*t trucks I owned in the past.  With that said Nissan is NOT on the same fit & finish level as Toyota (or Honda for that matter).  If you are shopping trucks (non-diesel) than you owe it to yourself to go check out the Toyota Tundra.  The 380hp 5.7 DOHC V8 is to die for.  With that said the 5.6 in my Titan is also an amazing motor.  The combo of a big displacement V8 with DOHC and 32v is the only way to go.  The American pushrod V8s are not in the same league.

The downside to any of the full size loaded up trucks/suvs with V8 power is that once you get done optioning them out with leather, luxury packages etc you are mid $40K-$50K easy.  This is a stupid price to pay for what is basically a tarted-up pickup truck.  Pricing on trucks has gotten f*cking out of hand in the past 5 or 6 years.  The next couple months are a good time to shop though as most dealers are very anxious to clear the lots of the 2010 models to make room for the 2011s which start rolling into many dealerships as early as Sept.

The full size Toyotas will depreciate the least and are likely to give you the best reliability and ease of ownership too.

There was a Editorial in Automobile magazine that mentioned the Yukon Hybrid, and the discounts for it. Plus, doesn't one get a tax credit for buying a hybrid, and incentives from gM? I would look into that if I were you.

One of my coworkers has a 2010 Ram 1500 Laramie and I gotta say its the nicest truck overall I have ever seen for style both inside and out and driving dynamics.  Its also got the coil spring suspension in the back so if its more for play than work that makes it a much nicer drive than your standard light duty pickup (its not a gimmick there is far less bed hop than you get with standard leaf springs).  As far as interiors go the Ford has some nicer trims and its a better choice for straight work but overall for a truck thats a daily driver not for work then the Ram is your best bet - plus you get the 5.7L Hemi  ;D

The Titan isn't on the same level as the other players in the light duty pickup segment and the tundra may be comparable to the chev (I would still take the silverado over it) but the ford and Doge blow it out of the water.

I'm about to get in the market myself here shortly. Getting a truck this time around. My brother (worked with nissan) let me take a Titan LE  Crew 4W loaded...puppy was nice (hard as hell on gas lol). He mentioned the 2011 where going up the HP 390 (on select models i'm sure). I liked the luxury feel of the Titan and plus it still was a full size truck..etc. It is my first choice...bastards are not cheap at all though.

I'm starting to like the new tundra's. This guy had a black crew cab ram at my gym that looked nice also.

My only problem is if/when I get the truck I'm going to have to lose my honda. Don't have any room where I stay. Wife will still have her honda though. Decisions, decisions.

The Yukon is my 1sr choice and there are indeed numerous incentives, but the timing is wrong, that is an end of the year purchase, basically when I have to have money to pay the govt saved, I can use a very nice chunk of it on a 60k yukon denali and then immediately writeoff 35k or so.. ;)

One thing I can tell you...I've been pricing, comparing and consulting with my brother (who worked sales) all those puppies you listed will be very high 30's to 50 easy after you load them up.

Makes no sense to buy in between to penny pinch on an SUV or Full size truck. Either go stock/base model with nothing added on (which makes no sense to me unless you are a painter or running a lawn care company) or go hard. I'm going to go in hard, so I plan on putting a good amount down so my payments won't be insane...right now I have $0/month payments on the honda lol.

Its getting redesigned for next year although they have yet to release anything but spy images of the new look.  I would take the challenger any day over the charger and when it gets the 6.4 it shouldn't get spanked so bad by the other 2 pony cars

So seriously wtf.  I went to the nissan dealership today, drove a Titan and liked it, but.... 22,500 doesnt get you power windows, power doors, power side mirrors?  Its 2010, why do the even make cars without power windows?  So I couldnt help but feel like 22.5k + tax gets you a motorized red flyer wagon so I left.  Im guessing that these days its 15k for a bicycle.
Then I drove a 2010 chevy avalanche which I can get for 37 nicely loaded, so im mulling that over...

why would you buy a GM car that are pieces of junk that will fall apart on you?  Buy a foreign made car that will hold up.  Ford makes good cars for US not sure any other US manufacture is any good.

i hadn't driven a GM truck in a very long time.....i was on my way home from work in 2007....saw the 2008 1500 Texas edition test drove it, and got it the same day...even after that old bastard totaled it, i went back and got a identicle truck, just 2 years newer..since i have gone back to GM i couldn't see driving any other type of full size truck daily other than my 1500......if you need something bigger for working, i would recommend something else...

for around 38-40 you could get you a Titan LE fully loaded Crew Cab (4DR) leather, sunroof, nav, entire deal. You gotta go heavy in on a titan ..their lower end titan models just don't appeal to me at all plus makes no sense to get them unless you really only want a base model truck.

The denali is nice also. got a co worker with one loaded. not cheap at all but it's really nice.

LOL, Dodge Charger/Challenger/300C.....built by an Italian company on German platforms made in Canada.  The Hemis are GARBAGE.  The 5.7s have been regularily blowing up under 600 hp stress tests and the police Chargers are starting to break down with regularity.   I would like the 6.1 SRT version, but there ain't no way in hell I"d spend $35-40k on a Fiat.

I've always loved the LSX series motors, despite the new Camaro looking like a 10 year old designed it(and its built in Canada).  The 04-06 GTOs were boring, but handsome cars(and Australian with Pontiac badges slapped on).

The new 5.0 Mustang is the real deal, but I fear that there's gonna be a markup for quite some time.  The one thing that kept me from buying a Mustang in the past(aside from every other person having one) was the piece of shit Modular Engine it had.  The ONLY way it was able to make power was if you swapped out the block, went with forged internals, and put a 2.4, 2.8, or Mammoth Kenne Bell blower on it for 15+ psi.  That, along with tranny and rear end work, costs a stupid amount of money.  My old Heads/Cam LS1 with 4400 stall would regularily demolish blown 4.6 mustangs.  The only ones I had trouble with were KB and TT 03-04 Cobras.

As for trucks, just get a Diesel.  Reliability?  Check.  Longetivity?  Check.  I traded in my Hemi Quad Cab Dodge for a newer Cummins 3500.  I got rid of my piece of shit truck with a piece of shit motor for a newer piece of shit truck with a badass motor.  And Diesels last hundreds of thousands miles more than what any gas motor can put out, including overrated Toyota and Honda.

This whole Toyota and Honda "lasts longer" is a myth, a stereotype.  These cars are mostly assembled here in the US by US workers with the same amount of parts coming in from China and other Third-World countries as their competitors.  There is no longer a true American-made, or even Japanese-made or German-made car anymore.  What do you do?  Buy a Jap car assembled in Kentucky, or buy a Ford made in Mexico?

JBGray, I start with you bottom post. VW has had more quality problems with the cars assembled in Mexico than the ones assembled in Germany. So it would stand to reason, that the Fords built in Mexico, possibly will have more flaws than the ones made in the US, and the ones made in the US have more flaws than the ones made in Europe. Euro Fords have higher standards, as the Euro customers and have higher standards for cars. As do the regulators. That's why the Ford Mondeo and Focus (RS and ST) versions are wanted over here. The Japanese cars made here, as well as the German ones, the respective companies tend to have higher standards, and the parts made in Germany or Japan. Allegedly the issues with the Am made gas pedal is to blame for "some" of the sticky pedal issues in Toyotas, not the Japanese versions of the pedal. How true that is, I don't know. But, BMW M and Mercedes M and Audi S and RS cars are assembled in Germany. Shows you just how much they trust American workmanship on the assembly line.

I agree with the engine issue.

Now, the Dodge issues, this current gen of Challenger, Charger cars are built off the old E class chassis from the late 90s, to roughly 2004. No, Fiat chassis at all. But, Fiat might have them build cars off a Lancia chassis, who knows. But, the new Grand Cherokee is getting rave reviews, because it was being worked on in conjunction with the new Mercedes ML, meaning it has a better interior and the first Jeep with independent rear suspension (why didn't I write IRS?)

as far as not driving a car owned by Fiat, you'd drive a Ferrari, Alfa 8C, or a Maserati, correct? All three companies fall under Fiat....

Hi Ahmad! :D

Perfect for certain types of businesses...

WOW!  Here is a story.  I told this one a while back.  My best friend who I grew up with had just signed with the Montreal Expos 2nd round in 1977 June draft.  He had taken some of his Bonus and bought a 76 Chevy Van and had it customized.  A few months later we went and saw Smokey and Bandit.  We left that movie and before we got to the van decided to buy a Trans Am.  We went to the dealership and told the guy we wanted a Trans Am cause we just saw the movie.  Well he said they got in a Special Edition exactly like the one in the film.  They had made 250 of them.  It cost about $11, 500.00  My friend paid the down and I made the monthly.  That winter we went to St. Petersburg, FL for winterball with the Expos.  He drove and I flew.  Well after about 5 weeks I ended up going home.  A couple months later Winterball was over but he didn't want to drive so he flew back to Cali.  He left the car with a guy who had a small used car dealership in Tampa.  I flew back to pick up the car and drive back.  When I got there the car had over 12,000 miles.  This was all done in less than 5 months or so.  It appears this guy actually had the car for awhile and was driving it everywhere.  Back then hardly anyone had a Trans Am and no one had one like this.  Anyway, I took it and drove it back to Cali.  Well the car started making this noise when I got to Louisiana.  I had pulled over into a rest stop and when I woke up and pulled out of the place the car started knocking really bad then it wnet POP really loud.  I pulled over and couldn't see anything wrong.  Well when I started it back up it revved really high around 2500 rpm even with my foot off the peddle.  Anyway I drove it about 50 miles in idle at about 20 mph till I got to Lake Charles, LA.  I pulled into Siebarth Dodge, Pontiac, Merecedes and a bunch of other cars.  When I pulled it because the car was so beautiful but loud as hell everyone came out to see.  Well they took it in the back to see what was wrong.

In the meantime I met a beautiful girl and became very close friends.  Very close.  Then the door opens (guest lounge) and in comes this really tall guy.  The girl gets up and says "Hi dad" HOLY SHIT her dad owned the place.  Well he took me outside and she came along.  In short the motor threw a wrist pin.  They wanted $1200 to replace the motor cause it was beyond the warranty mileage.  It was over by less than 2000 miles.  He told me that if I could turn back the odometer the warranty would pay, but he couldn't do it.  He said for me to go to the next dealership which was in Texas.  Anyway, the car ended up blowing up for good on the Texas/Louisiana border.

I flew home.  We ended up selling to one of our friends dad who had a trailer go pick it up.  He had the odometer turned back and took it up to Santa Barbara and they put a new motor in it and he sold it.  He ended up paying us exactly what was owned on it.  I remain good friends with the Siebarth family who since then sold their dealership which was the largest in Louisiana and now own a huge ranch and raise cows in which McDonalds is their largest account.  They have a herd bull they paid $1 million for.  They sell the sperm for $10,000 a cc.

That is my daily story.  It is titled Trans Am from the Bandit

Thoughts?

No you are way lost.

a small efficient car, perhaps a Toyota Corolla?

Parker, You appear to really know your stuff about cars.  Which do you think is a better better buy?  A 2007 Mercedes SL550 or A 2007 SLK55 AMG?  My take is styling goes to the SL550 hands down.  Power and reliability go to the SLK55 AMG.  That reliability factor scares me away from the SL550.  I've basically been told that you don't want to buy any 3 0r 4 year old SL without an additional warranty.
What's your take?

In terms of image and hp, go with the SL550, better overall look and design, has a beautiful, graceful design, that will age well and stand the test of time. The ugly square headlights of the 2008-2009 (?) redesign sucks ass. It has more hp than the SLK55, but the SLK55 is far more maneuverable and agile, due to the lack of bulk compared to the heavy SL. The SLK55s class is the the Porsche Boxster/ Cayman, 350Z (at the time), and BMW Z4M coupe, and Audi TT, the Mercedes, Porsche, BMW, and Audi being the premium, and the Porsche and BMW being the better handling cars

The SLK is kinda regarded as a "hairdresser's car", even though they tried to butch it up, it kinda looks ugly to me, better in black. The car to get if you fing a good clean example, if you are looking at Mercedes folding hardtops, is the SL55 AMG, 493 hp and a whole lot of torque. It sounds great, has a SC 5.4 liter V8 (hence the 55 moniker). That car, was and still is a monster, and it saddened people when they stopped making it, going with the Naturally Aspirated 6.2 liter in the SL63 AMG.

If you are looking at a small 2 seater lux car that has sport in mind, the sleeper is te BMW Z4 M, they didn't make a whole lot, and the ones they did, they didn't sell that many, so you can find one with very low mileage. It has the E46 M3's S54 Inline 6 engine, and is light weight, which means it handles better than the SLK55, and has more usable cargo space. It cones in stick. A guy near me has the Z4 M, and it looks badass in black with 35 % tint.

Hopefully this helps.

what makes u think the lt1 was stock? could u not hear it idle? and what makes u think the supra was low power because it got rolled on? a stock k20 in a hatch will do 12's all day the reason i know that is because ive owned two of them and ran that in palmdale with stock management.

not saying the k20 isnt capable....but that camaro owner is on several LT1 message boards...and is stock...he has full exhaust, it doesnt even make 300 to the wheels..the guy is hounded on a dailey basis because of that video..honestly, do you really think a 400hp supra is going to move that slow, and have no front end rise when accelerating?

Damn, Kubby you Mexican, right? What's with the Civic love? Most people into the K20s have move on, to the Evos, STi's Audis and BMWs (more so the BMWs).  AWD or RWD, and with today's environmental concerns and gas mileage, hybrid power trains are going to be the performance way to go. It seems that people into the Civics and RSXs tend to be those who can't get a M3, they tend to have a "thing" about people who own M3s, or those stuck on Honda 4 bangers, basically price point modders. Never have they gone the TSX modding route, from what i've seen

I always want ed to see someone take two F20Cs and make a V8 and stick that in the NSX chassis, would be tight.

Never saw the fascination with Honda (other than the S2000, NSX in terms of cars) , and the fact that they literally refuse to bring a V8 in their RL (now, it's being discontiued) or RWD for their Acura line has made it a low rung luxury brand. And they are capable of doing it it, because they have the ARX-01s race cars in Le Mans and Honda HSV.

BTW, I'm a 2JZ-GE, fan (not a fan of the 2JZ-GTE, but respect it)

I agree that the SL550 has a timeless design.  I also agree that the new "more muscular" look that began in 2009 is NOT an improvement.  That's why I'm considering an '07 or '08.  Mercedes bumped the HP up to 382 in '07, and now the car is capable of low 5's for its 0-60 sprint.  That's impressive for such a heavy car that's not truly a sports car.  I considered an '04 - '06 SL55.  I test drove an '04 and that car is a monster.  I would buy one tomorrow if they didn't have reliability problems.  They are even more problematic than the SL500 and SL550.

I used to think of the SLK as pretty much a chick car.  Mercedes allowed me to keep a SLK55 over the weekend.  The car feels like it has more that 355 ponies.  Maybe it was due to my lack of driving skills, but I only felt comfortable pushing the car on straight-aways.  It just felt scary pushing it in curves.  The Air-scarf system really does work!  I liked the overall design of the SLK55, but the rear end is a bit blunted in my opinion.  I think it's sad they're getting rid of the Formula-1 nose, though I will concede that it's been around for a while.

I really don't care for BMW's Z4.  The latest design looks great when the top is down, however, the hood looks too long when the top is up.  I didn't know they put the E46's M3 engine in the Z4M.  That's gotta make for a quick and fast car!

Thanks for the solid advice.  It does help.

BTW, I'm a 2JZ-GE, fan (not a fan of the 2JZ-GTE, but respect it)
I DONT GIVE A FUCK WHAT YOU RESPECT! I GIVE RESPECT WHERE ITS DO. FOOLS THAT TALK SHIT ABOUT HONDAS AND SAY THEY ARENT FAST CAN SUCK MY DICK SHIT HERES A 700 HP POWER MOTOER NON VTEC ON PUMP GAS STREET TRIM . SHIT IM 28 DRIVE A 2009 DENALI I RESPECT ANY CAR THATS QUICK DONT GET ME WRONG M5S AND ALL BUT MAKE NO MISTAKE THEY HAVE BEEN HANED THERE ASSES BY HONDAS SO QUIT THE SHIT TALKING AND GIVE RESPECT WHERE ITS DO!!!

You can't read, can you? I never said i don't respect Honda, i've given them respect. But Honda doesn't want to commit to a true out and out sports car. And stop shoiwing 4 bangers and look at their F1 engines or their Super GT engines, or the V8 in their Le Mans LP1 racers. Those are the real feats of engineering. Plus, a 700 hp Honda is still, a Honda. And no stock Honda (unless its a NSX )has ever handed a E39 M5 and E60 M5 their asses. None. You have to pretty much modd the hell out of Civic to do that. And lightly mod a S2000 to do that (beat a E39), but heavily mod a S2000 to beat a E60 M5 with SMG.

Stop it with the Honda fanboyism. It's young minded. Which shows that people who play around with Hondas are young minded.

Civics and Vtechs are like Mustangs , they're relatively cheap to make fast hence very popular and I don't even think the Alex Zanardi NSX could beat an M5

The thing with Honda and most other Japanese brands is there was a law in Japan that no car would have more than 285HP ( the law is gone now )  , so they didn't need a V8 to get that type of HP just lightly modify an existing block ( vtech ) made sense from a bottom line standpoint

no matter how fast, i'd rather have a "slower" RWD car with more than 4 cylinders

I would rather have a V8 over any 4 banger just for the sound alone

Thing is, Honda's luxury brand, Acura, is 25 yrs old, and still doesn't commant respect like Lexus, and to a lesser extent Infiniti does. And it point to the FWD and lack of V8s in their line up. It is a tier @ Luxury car brand, and has aspired to be Tier one for yrs. Lexus and Infiniti have done this by bench marking the competition and either keep up or beat them out right. Not Acura (except for the SH-AWD Aucra TL vs. the Audi S4). Honda just like Toyoata has played the conservative route, and Honda is far more conservative, so bad that it hurts their bottom line sometimes.

I realize that about the Honda engines and cars,  a modded Civic is like a hotrod '57 Chevy, ubiquitous.

One used to see them everywhere. Where I work, only the  poorer people mod them, I see '87 CRx's buzzing around all the time, sometimes with no fenders, hood or bumpers.  You see certainlevels of modding depending on income and class of people.
