When Stupid People don’t Know that They are Stupid: Glenn Beck’s Restoring Honor Rally and the Dunning-Kruger Effect

URL to article: http://blogs.alternet.org/speakeasy/2010/09/02/when-stupid-people-dont-know-that-they-are-stupid-glenn-becks-restoring-honor-rally-and-the-dunning-kruger-effect/

The masses are asses. We know this. But the level of ignorance displayed by the attendees at the “Restoring Honor” rally is shocking even by contemporary standards.

It is quite clear that Glenn Beck is a master propagandist with a chilling and Svengali-like power over the lemmings of the New Right. Beck-watching is compelling (to me at least) because his popularity is a barometer of the toxins in our political atmosphere. Moreover, I wonder if Beck’s followers would be so slavish as to follow him off a cliff, and to what extremes would the tea party brigands go in their devotion to his cult of personality.

To point, here is a little armchair sociology to help put Beck and the New Right’s devotees into a broader context.

Courtesy of Wikipedia:

The Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which an unskilled person makes poor decisions and reaches erroneous conclusions, but their incompetence denies them the metacognitive ability to realize their mistakes. The unskilled therefore suffer from illusory superiority, rating their own ability as above average, much higher than it actually is, while the highly skilled underrate their abilities, suffering from illusory inferiority. This leads to the situation in which less competent people rate their own ability higher than more competent people. It also explains why actual competence may weaken self-confidence: because competent individuals falsely assume that others have an equivalent understanding. “Thus, the miscalibration of the incompetent stems from an error about the self, whereas the miscalibration of the highly competent stems from an error about others.”

The Dunning–Kruger effect was put forward by Justin Kruger and David Dunning. Similar notions have been expressed–albeit less scientifically–for some time. Dunning and Kruger themselves quote Charles Darwin (”Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge”) and Bertrand Russell (”One of the painful things about our time is that those who feel certainty are stupid, and those with any imagination and understanding are filled with doubt and indecision.”
The Dunning–Kruger effect is not, however, concerned narrowly with high-order cognitive skills (much less their application in the political realm during a particular era, which is what Russell was talking about.Nor is it specifically limited to the observation that ignorance of a topic is conducive to overconfident assertions about it, which is what Darwin was saying. Indeed, Dunning et al. cite a study saying that 94% of college professors rank their work as “above average” (relative to their peers), to underscore that the highly intelligent and informed are hardly exempt. Rather, the effect is about paradoxical defects in perception of skill, in oneself and others, regardless of the particular skill and its intellectual demands, whether it is chess, playing golf or driving a car.

The hypothesized phenomenon was tested in a series of experiments performed by Justin Kruger and David Dunning, then both of Cornell University. Kruger and Dunning noted earlier studies suggesting that ignorance of standards of performance is behind a great deal of incompetence. This pattern was seen in studies of skills as diverse as reading comprehension, operating a motor vehicle, and playing chess or tennis.

Kruger and Dunning proposed that, for a given skill, incompetent people will:

1. tend to overestimate their own level of skill;
2. fail to recognize genuine skill in others;
3. fail to recognize the extremity of their inadequacy;
4. recognize and acknowledge their own previous lack of skill, if they can be trained to substantially improve.

Title: All that stuff sounds logical if you sub OBama for Beck.

Normal people see Obama as the charlatan.  Tax raising economy destorying bureaucrat fattening shitbag with deficits [which are simply interest growing taxes], endless war,  and unemplyemnt for good measure.  Hate to see what communists consider a failure if Obama is a success.

Straw, I really don't know whats more hilarious.

1.  You posting this thread, since the title fits you perfectly.

2.  The fact that this article applies perfectly to the legions of far left progressives and democrats still supporting this admn.

3.  College professors who never worked a day in their lives callling others incompetent.

4.  The article not applying equally to Obama and the complete circus and puppet show that his admn is.

5.  Calling followers of Beck clueless when you have the Peggys' and Julios' of the world literally worshipping Obama and this admn.

6.  19 months of unmitigated failure and incompetence from this admn on healthcare, economy, forgeign policy, etc, and the best these two hacks can do is attack Beck.

and lastly

7.  After the utter beat down you have received in your last attempt on these boards to make some misguided, uninformed, and idiotic point, that you would go for a third time.

But, I digress, I'm sure in some part of your mind you think you are making a brilliant point with this thread.  I'm sure others will come along and do to you what they did in the other threads.

333 - this guy is clearly a head case (and again, it's been posted many times before)

how about you just find some examples of regular people, such as the plethora of teabaggers, who are have normal brain function but are just suffering from stupidy and ignorance.

the content I posted is from last week and person after person appears normal yet when they speak you realize they are so fucking stupid that they don't even know the positions, beliefs, quotes from their own spiritual leader Saint Glenn

Hey Straw Man - doesnt your thread label apply to people who believed ObamaCare would lower costs?

it does because those people would be part of the hugely uninformed masses who somehow think that legislation that phases in over 7 or 8 years would somehow lower costs today when that was never part of the program.

Here's a link from Reuters from March 2010 summarizes the benefits, both immediate and phased in over time.
http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSN1914020220100319

do you see one that says health care premiums won't go up in 2010 or 2011?

Are you cognizant of the fact that you are stupid?

I'm cognizant that a lot of stupid people who read this board got all worked up without ever realizing they were part of that group of people who are destined to be dumbfounded dipshits for their entire lives.

I'm also cognizant that I spend way too much time trying to educate these people who are too dumb to ever learn anything and most likely would prefer to stay dumb and angry.

I'm also cognizant that your lifetime membership in that group of dumbfounded dipshits has been confirmed

congratulations

Thank you for the unnecessarily verbose meltdown. A simple yes would have sufficed. Did you have to break out the large print thesaurus to use all of those fancy words? Next time you pick up the big book with all of the fancy words, try looking up the word irony. Irony would be the most applicable word to use when considering the fact that one of the stupidest people who posts here made a thread entitled "When Stupid People don't Know that They are Stupid".

how is it a meltdown?
do you see caps or exclamation points?
I have no clue which words you think are so "fancy" but I'm not suprised you would find some of them challenging

the response by the dumber people on this board to the title (which I copied from the article which most dipshits probably didn't bother to notice) has been hilarious.

the real irony of this thread has been the response by people such as yourself - the epitome of the people referenced in the title of this thread

HAHHAHAHHAHAHAHHAAHA--- no thank you. Clearly, you still don't know what the word irony means and you also lack the intelligence to discern sarcastic statements from serious ones. The only fancy word you used was the word cognizant --which you borrowed from my prior posting. Also, FYI- you don't have to use capital letters or exclamation points to meltdown. Since this is the internet, I can't hear you.

Hope this helps.

I've shown you at least a couple of examples of this

It's truly one of the most bizarre things I've ever seen anyone do so I'm not too concerned with your "perception" of me

Frankly, I think I treat all people pretty fairly on this site and only start giving people shit when they do it to me first.

Even with you I always try to start with having a civil discussion but you (and others) tend to have no real position other than unfocused rage (often due to being misinformed)  always get weak and break down and start calling people names when your core argument starts to fail

I've noticed that Georgy Girl doesn't even bother feigning an argument most of the time and just starts with personal insults (usually just as an excuse to  tell us all his gay fantasies)

Dude seriously, look up the word ironic. The more you respond, the dumber you look. This last response you came up with is starting to make me suspect that you have some sort of severe learning disability or mental illness. I used the word cognizant and you responded with a posting that had brilliant words like "dipshit" and "dumbfounded" with cognizant sprinkled in for good measure. I pretended to be impressed with your expansive vocabulary and referred to your choice of words as fancy. You were obviously too stupid to see that I was being sarcastic and made the comment that you were surprised to see that I found the words in your post challenging. That response made this thread even more ironic. With your latest response, I think that it is abundantly clear that you have a reading comprehension problem or poor eyesight. In either event, you have not only made a complete fool of yourself, but now you are  insistant on butchering the word ironic and stretching its meaning into something that doesn't exist. Congratulations on destroying another of your own threads. Keep up the good work.  :-\

of course I can't "see that you are being sarcastic, just like I can't hear tone or inflection

you asked me if I was cognizant of something and I responded by telling you what I am cognizant of

why do you thing that's such a "fancy" word?

333386, I honestly think you should calm down and relax. Seriously.

You are sooo frequently on the same page with many posters, but you are also so often too worked up to even realize it. You interpret every statement as an attack against you and then you lash out.

Take a deep breath ffs, ...and understand what is actually being said. put the reptilian responses to rest.
