Title: The good old days.
Post by: Vince B on September 21, 2010, 12:24:46 AM
One day these will be the good old days. I turned 68 today (21st) and still post on muscle forums. Getbig is a challenge because so many anonymous blokes have a free for all and say what they like and bag others if they can. This is a great site for masochists and sadists alike. Each can take turns being humiliated and being nasty. If you want to feel like crap just post your earnest ideas and opinions here.

I am not gay whatsoever and don't drive a white van around. I date grandmothers nowadays. Your turns will come.

I still train a bit but not as much as before. Maybe I need to challenge Josh or Keith to a self-improvement contest! Enterring bodybuilding contests is a good way to maintain motivation.

Perhaps Ron can give me my Blue Stars for my birthday? Can't comprehend why an IFBB national champion isn't recognized here. Maybe the Pro Athletes Rep can go to bat for me here? I am a professional by NABBA standards because I own a gym.

Went to a 35th High School Reunion for students I taught in the early seventies in Sydney. Here I am with Brett Falkner who was the only kid I couldn't catch at British Bulldog in PE. He was my very best PE student that I ever taught and a fast sprinter. He got injured some 20 or more years ago in a windsurfing accident and is now a quadriplegic. He had some businesses so did okay after getting insurance money. Nice to catch up with Brett again but so sad to see this superior athlete in a wheelchair. He has a good attitude about life so that was refreshing to see.

As far as I know I inspired only one student to take up bodybuilding competitively. Several others train regularly in gyms and look good for their age.

Here is Ray Cosh at 53. I taught him in the early seventies.  He won some titles in the Sydney scene in the eighties. Great to meet up with former students and have a few laughs.

I always made my classes fun to participate in. We always played games and never did drills. I believed in learning by doing.

Thanks, Wes. I think when you hit 50 you don't want any more birthdays but they seem to arrive quicker each year. I guess it helps to have things to look forward to. That way time seems to pass much slower. When things are relatively boring you don't have many highlights and it all fades into very little at all.

Happy birthday, Vince! We've had our beefs and I don't agree with everything you say but I respect you and listen to what you say. You've been there and seen it all. No matter what anybody says, if you left this board you would be missed. I'm glad you stick around in what must be the toughest board around. You give as good as you take and you've never had a meltdown.

Fair dinkum, my friend.

No flame but please start doing some regular cardio for the sake of your health and stay out of the Burger King.  Hope the next decade is the best one ever for you, champ.

I didn't do anything today so am going out now to get a Family Feast of KFC. Should do for a few meals. Just a warning to you blokes. Beware of being married because you could end up on a park bench like me and Milos! I think if you get married and both work in a gym the marriage is doomed.

Using my iPad at McDonalds eating KFC.

Thanks to those sending wishes. Hazbin joins Paul Dillet who didn't win the Mr Canada title. According to know-it-all Goodrum there was no one in my contest. Believe it or not but I was working for Ray Beck the promoter and it was my task to pick the judges!

Thanks for sharing Vince. Unlike so many useless repetitive posts on GB, yours seem to have themes, and lessons. We all take so many things for granted in life until they are gone. Happy birthday.

I picked 15 judges but 13 were there. Ken Rivard got 5 and I got 8 first place votes. I picked intelligent, independent, experienced and unbiased people. Chuck Sipes picked me which I felt good about. It was a close contest and I was surprised that I won.

Guys like me have a lot to offer the younger generation. When I post helpful advice here I am usually ignored, ridiculed or told to kill myself. Imagine the things people my age have done. When I was young I didn't do well in the romance department. I learned the formula the hard way. Most of the young guys here don't want to listen so I seldom offer advice. I was the guy who told Milos I might be able to get his arms bigger and he scoffed at me. Well, he never found out my advice and his arms never got any bigger.

I don't need blue stars. I just say it to stir the moderators. I mean, can we imagine Ron up there in posing trunks? Never. The rules and privileges should apply equally to everyone. Where are Goodrum's blue stars? Ron isn't consistent. A guy competes so he deserves blue stars.

Yeah, Bob, just like you when you accepted the trophy over hapless Rusty Jeffers. Talk about a travesty.

Would you believe it was my job on the day of the contest to take Chuck Sipes, the guest poser and head judge, to English Bay Beach? I wore my suit and behaved immaculately. Did any of this help me win the contest? I have no idea. I learned from the Mr America contest that bodybuilders had to present themselves properly if they wanted to get fairly treated by the judges.

Compare that behaviour with what Bob does. He makes sure he is mates with the guy running the pro shows. I guess he isn't as daft as many people think. It is who you know in this small sport.

Some of you guys harvest the internet for photos even I don't have. You know, when I was a teenager I was extremely fussy about what I liked in girls. If they had any fat on their legs I noticed it and it turned me off. Some years later the big legs and hips started to excite me. Nowadays I like them much bigger. I still appreciate the shapes that most people like. It wasn't too long ago I saw an absolutely perfect and hot figure. She was an instructor in a gym on the north shore. I swear her hips were only 32 inches or less but she was built like a Barbi Doll. So there are heaps of attractive shapes and you never know what your preferences will evolve to over the years. Experience helps the process. If you don't have much you can't expect to grow. Most guys just like what everyone else likes. Yeah, those gals are nice but sometimes we get wired to like something different. You have to admit that not many women fancy big muscles and yet we all train hard trying to get them to impress the gals. Seems counterproductive.Very few guys have the confidence or nerve to be seen with larger women. You sure get some huge women in America. I don't see them that big over here. Not even close.

Here I am with my Dad, Frank Basile. He was born in Italy and emigated to Canada in 1926. A great guy who really cared about his family. Mum took off when I was 13 and left 7 kids behind. Dad looked after us by himself. Not many men are like him. This was taken a year of so before the Mr Canada contest. I was natural for the first 11 years. My Dad never understood my lifting weights but he was sure proud the day I won a couple contests and a bunch of trophies.

Hey, I listened to you when you ridiculed me for consuming 350+ grams of protein a day at my paltry 185lbs. The extra money I save now goes into my gas tank as gas here is $3.55/gal for regular. Also, I learned what hypertrophy means.

Comment to Pellius. Being scientific means reading the literature and research findings and accepting the evidence for theories that are held and supported. Too many hold beliefs picked up from magazines and the gym. For example, how much protein does a guy like you need per day? You claim you used to take 300 to 350 grams and have cut that back to about 200 grams just to be safe. Well, someone like you who is not increasing muscle size probably needs only 20 grams of protein per day and probably no more than 50 grams. So you could save even more if you stop wasting it on unnecessary protein. The extra will be converted to energy and it is much cheaper to get that directly from fats and carbohydrates. You need to read university nutrition textbooks and not forum hearsay for your information.

Ray Beck thought it would be a good idea to have the Mr Canada contest in Vancouver. So he applied and Ben Weider accepted his proposal. Then he found out he had to pay a substantial fee to promote it. He was busy running two gyms and an equipment store so left a lot of things up to me and my wife to attend to. We did just about everything from arranging the poster and distributing them. We selected trophies anc collected them. I posed with the Mr C trophy at home a day before because I sure didn't expect to win. I knew more bodybuilders so was given the job to select judges. I picked 15 top guys but only 13 showed up on the day. That was enough to avoid local bias that one sees in most contests. I had two friends judging. One voted for me and one didn't. That is what I expected because I picked independent, intelligent guys who apply criteria and make an unbiased decision. I even appeared on a TV Wrestling show and did my posing routine to promote the contest. I didn't want to expose myself before the contest because I was training in secret. Ken Rivard was a favourite and he asked me 3 months out if I was enterring. I told him I was going to win it! He laughed in my face. I always trained in a track suit at the gym after that. Trained in secret. Ken wasn't happy when he was announced second. He won a lot of the bodyparts and had the best upper body there by far. His legs and posing let him down. I think I was more prepared than he was. He posed like an amateur and figured he was so big they would have to give him the trophy. I honestly was surprised that I beat him. He got 5 firsts and I got 8 so a couple of votes the other way and he would have won. There you are.

I just cut out the protein drinks and worrying about protein intake. I probably get maybe 200 grams max not because I want to be safe but because I am an unrepentant carnivore. I love meat and consuming former sentient beings. I have prominent incisors and a predatory nature with a chase instinct. Blood excites me. 20 grams of protein per day -- lol! That's not even a decent hamburger. Science or not, my ancestors didn't claw their way to the top of the food chain so that I can eat grass.

Sounds like you need to pick up a book and do a little research. Geez, where in the fuck do you come up with this crap?

i had a discussion on here with Chick a few years ago about the difference between 'FIXING' contests and giving competitors 'GIFT' placings in the IFBB.  he actually called me a fool for not knowing the difference. he clearly stated that the IFBB does not 'FIX' contests, but certain competitors are 'GIFTED' wins in the IFBB pro division. i said i wasn't aware of that as i don't have an IFBB rulebook. i guess i am a fool, as i still don't comprehend the difference.

this discussion was here on Getbig back in May 2007 in a thread about Milos if anyone wants a chuckle, i mean to learn the facts of the IFBB judging system.

I sure didn't think I was going to win this contest and since we had the trophies at our place I got Roz to take a photo of me holding the Mr Canada trophy just for fun. I still have that trophy but gave all the others away to family and friends.

It saddens me to see dorks like Bob Chick involved in running bodybuilding. Look at how that jerk shits on former champions like me. Why on earth would anyone enlist him to represent professional bodybuilders? Well, the unvarnished truth is he represents the Pro League and his job is to get the musclemen to tow the line and not make any trouble. They got the right guy to do that because this former cadet deputy sheriff is good at enforcing rules.

Here is the list of the judges. Not sure if this is the complete list because the simple program was made days before the show. You can see most of the judges were past bodybuilding champions and that is about as good as it gets for a judging panel.

The Mr Pacific Northwest was also staged with the Mr Canada contest. This was supposed to be for Washington and Alaska as well as BC and Alberta. The Washington State bodybuilders didn't show up so what can I say? John Mikl on the left was the best junior and came second. I think that is George Fletcher on the right who came third. Ken Rivard didn't enter this contest because he was confident he would win the Mr Canada title. In the background is Walter Milner who won the Mr Canada a few years later and was a great champion from Moosehorn, Manitoba. John Mikl won Mr Canada as well and sang professionally as Thor. The lad in the back in trousers had polio but was allowed to compete as a favour to give him some encouragement. Joe Hing is partly hidden but was a popular lad from Fiji. I will have to find the Mr Canada photos and post some here.

Hi Joe. I believe the lad with polio was Lenny Marriott. He got an encouragement award that night. It was great to see him training in the gym despite his handicap. Not sure what happened to him because I moved to Australia 6 months after winning that title. I never enjoyed the prestige of that title in BC.

Then you should have no trouble explaining to us how you came to the conclusion that a 185lb man who obviously weight trains and is extremely active and trains in MMA (non-competitively I'm assuming) and is older, needs only 20 grams of protein per day? Do not understand there are multiple functions protein has besides hypertrophy?

There is a direct correlation between nutrition and hypertrophy, you claim to be an expert in hypertrophy, you cannot have one without the other. You told Pellis that he was wasting protein and he only needed 20grms per day. Again, how did you come to that conclusion?

Here is the article I wrote for Joe Weider after the Mr Canada. Ray Beck didn't have time to write it! I also wrote the article in Ironman but it was by an 'observer'! This article made Frank Zane tell me I have been in Fantasyland all my life because it said my ambition was to beat Frank Zane. Who knows what I could have achieved had I gone to live in LA instead of Sydney? Perhaps I was lucky I went to live in Australia! Most of those champions from the good olds days are hardly remembered nowadays. In those days the two big titles were Mr America and Mr Universe in England. Mr Canada was prestigious because Joe and Ben were from Canada and their early magazines featured many of the bodybuilders from Quebec. By the time I won in 1970 Joe was in New Jersey and soon to shift to California where he lives to this day.

This article lists the competitors and winners plus the other events that day.

When I reread my article there are inconsistencies about the number of judges and how many 1st places Ken and I got. At one point I write that Ken and Phillippe both got one first place each and I got the rest. Perhaps this was after the prejudging because we were judged again in the finals and perhaps there were more judges there. Not really sure now as that was 40 years ago. My memory is quite good but sometimes details fade away. I do recall that it was close. I must have the judges sheets somewhere so might find them and see what the heck happened. All that really matters is who gets the trophy.
When I look at the photos I am pleased with the one showing me with all the trophies. The others aren't so impressive. The ones of the guys on stage standing relaxed makes our shoulders look narrow. That is because the angle is looking up. The really big guys still look big from that angle. So most of us in those days weren't very big. I was 190 pounds and Joe Gold looked at me when I was 210 and said 180. That is what he figured my lean weight would be. I never did get cuts on my thighs so maybe Joe was right. Of course I never accepted what Joe said.

Ok, I'll bite.  What did you study, Vince?

I went to a few universities. First was CMR at St Jean, Quebec as an Officer Cadet. Didn't like that so accepted a National Scholarship to attend McGill University in Montreal. I won that in grade 12 at Kamloops High School. So so in arts classes at McGill so headed for UBC. Topped my class in 3rd year PE while doing 6 subjects and got on the Dean's List. Earned a BA from UBC majoring in Philosophy and Geography with a minor in Psychology. Made it to the last 8 when I applied for a Rhodes Scholarship. Did a couple of years in Grad school but dropped out. Then off to Australia and completed my DipEd that I started at UBC. Taught PE in high school for 10 years. Ran my gym, started a gym equipment business and finished my MEd from Sydney University in 1989. Did most of my masters courses in the Philosophy of Science which I enjoyed. Did one course in Exercise Physiology at the masters level. College Militaire Royale, McGill, UBC, U of Toronto, Simon Fraser, Alexander Mackie (NSW) and Sydney U were the universites I attended.

That was a joke. Josh keeps telling me to do that when I post in his threads. Atheist by choice.

I'm surprised, Vince.  I expected to see a lot more business administration or maybe mechanical engineering given your endeavours.

Why the move away from education and into the gym business then?  It seems like a fairly risky venture with a big startup cost.

When I came to Sydney in January 1971 I had to get a job and found one teaching PE in high school. Killarney Heights High in Northern Sydney. In August 71 I opened The Sydney Morning Herald and told Roz I was going to buy a gym. Well, one was for sale so I went out to have a look. I brought a 60% interest in the West Ryde Barbell Club for $1000. Had to borrow the money from a finance company and they put my Mr C trophy up as part of the collateral. In 6 months paid another $1000 for the rest of the gym. Changed the name to Vince's Gym. Worked teaching and then went to the gym every night. No holiday for 10 years! In 1980 I quit teaching as it was too stressful. Early in 1981 I started a gym equipment business and bought a mig welder, bandsaw, lathe, radial drill and other machines and tools and started designing and building gym equipment. I had a partner for 6 months but he pulled out so I was on my own. I hired a guy who knew more than me about making gym equipment and in the meantime had to learn fabrication and engineering. Read a few text books or at least looked at some from time to time. Engineering is relatively easy for me and I can now design a new piece of equipment and get it almost spot on the first time. Usually it takes several prototypes to get it right.

The reason I started making equipment is because people in the gym would both bore and annoy me. The way everyone thinks they know all about exercise and training when in fact most know either bugger all or very little. Steel will do what you make it do and you can always correct mistakes. People are not as malleable.

I regret not continuing with my studies and earning a PhD. I would have enjoyed lecturing at a university. Perhaps staff should have encouraged me to do the philosophy of PE way back in the sixties. Or even exercise science. I am hardly interested in business admin. I did earn a patent for my biceps supinator. I was pleased because the head of an engineering department at Sydney University couldn't solve the problem of having two degrees of freedom in an exercise machine with two weight stacks. Even Arthur Jones couldn't solve this problem. He was the one that alerted me to the desirability of having resistance for supination and rotation for the biceps. On my machine you can do that independently or simultaneously. I have no doubt that my machine is one of the most complicated pulley machines ever installed in gym on this planet.

Vince, it occurs to me that there are settings where lectures of the sort you propose would be greeted with greater enthusiasm than you might find in ivy covered halls, and you just happen to own one.  Why not organize a free seminar and see how it goes over?  I bet you'd get a lot of interest.  You could even form a few groups and test out your ideas.  I bet you'd have a blast.

I have given a few seminars and training camps. I think I charged either 10 or 20 dollars and people had theory plus putting that theory into practice. They usually went for hours. Ray Mentzer gave training camps so I thought they were a good idea. I haven't given any for many years now.

I picked 15 judges but 13 were there. Ken Rivard got 5 and I got 8 first place votes. I picked intelligent, independent, experienced and unbiased people. Chuck Sipes picked me which I felt good about. It was a close contest and I was surprised that I won.
