You can't strengthen a joint. You can only harm it. Supplement your workouts with Fish cartlidge and Glucosemine and ice your joints with a cold pack 4-5 times a week. That will strengthen the tendons around the joint and get rid of that nagging pain.

Is a hot/cold bath approach useful?

No, but a cold/hot bath approach can work wonders.

I find that helps more for muscle pain like an achy back for example.
