LOL
now that's an alpha drummer :D
-
at another forum i post at, some guy posted that, i remember seeing it when it had like 7 views. great drumming though, apparently he was in an 80's hair band.
-
lars ulrich
no dynamics.
-
Most people don' know who the best drummers are as they work in music fields most people don't give a shit about.

although i HATE death metal... i can't listen to that shit... but i gotta give it to these guys

jazz drumming is the hardest. not metal.

jazz drumming is the hardest. not metal.
Exactly. You want to know today's bests: Gerald Cleaver, Hamid Drake, Paal Nilssen-Love, Jim Black. Just a few of them. One of the few great metal drummers is Dave Lombardo (I'm not talking about the classic drummers like John Bonham for example who could really play music).
-

... Dave Weckl, Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Gadd, Dennis Chambers ... Buddy Fucking Rich!
Lars ain't even a great rock drummer. The f'n muppet's better than Lars.

Hottest (for a rock chick):

Nope. The guy from Rush takes the cake. No one can compare to that guy.

Great rock drummer, no doubt. FAR from the best, though.

Hottest (for a rock chick):
thread over, i'd love to plop my balls on one of the cymbals and have her take a few whacks.

It's no overly technical....or anything like that. She plays with great emotion, and is clearly a talented drummer.
Fucking hot.

Nope. The guy from Rush takes the cake. No one can compare to that guy.

Buddy Rich tribute. Many great drummers there and Peart was, by far, the worst. Not saying Peart is a bad drummer, he's a great drummer in fact. But at the Buddy Rich tribute he was definitely outclassed.
-
It's gotta be this guy!!!

-
Buddy Rich was just sick...look up some of his solos on drumworld or youtube. 4 piece drum set and he is all over it. His hand speed was amazing. MORTALCOIL hit the best ones I can think of off hand.
Some metal drummers are very good too...not the best but good. Each style has its best drumers. Jazz/Rock fusion drummers tend to be my favorite and arguably the most talented.
-
Jazz sucks
-
Came across this chap on YouTube...
-
Neil Peart.. End of Thread!
-
Jazz fusion drummer Virgil Donati is about a decade ahead of everyone.
Fast metal drumming is impressive, but those guys can't handle the crazy time signatures of high level jazz drumming.

the greatest drummer is now in the earth john bonham

Art Blakey
-
there isnt a 'best', just a level which many individuals have reached in which they can pretty much play anything.
my favorite though is neal peart
-
danny carey...isnt even close.
-
Neil Peart that's an easy one , but Corky Lange is awesome as well .
-
corey taylor
-
Peart is a good drummer maybe a great one but definitely the most over-rated out there.
Like someone said the best drummers are jazzers- Tony Williams is probably my favourite.
Rock-wise, Bonham was great, Ginger Baker, Mitch Mitchell, Keith Moon- far less technically proficient than a lot of guys but still a great player, Dave Grohl is great to see live. Bill Ward of Black Sabbath/Heaven and Hell is a very under-rated drummer.
lars ulrich is not even worth mentioning. Way over-hyped, terrible drum sound, and of course a c$%t

Lars and Kirk can barely play these days.

Tommy Lee
(and don't laugh..........Phil Collins)
-
danny carey...isnt even close.
this is a man with knowledge---danny carey fuking rules
-
what do yall think about this drummer?
-
That guy is insanely awesome.
In real terms there's lots of great ones.
John Bonham was one of the best, although 'best' is a relative BS term I guess. Nick Barker, Derek Roddy, Hellhammer etc are all technically good but all rely on triggers, (Roddy maybe not?)
Gadd and Calleuta (?) both float my boat.
-

This. Lars Ullrich shouldnt even be mentioned in the same thread as this guy.
-
In no particular order:
John Bonham, Tommy Lee, Vinnie Paul, Travis Barker, Nicko McBrain
-
not many musicians here to not have this man listed
Mike Portnoy

He's a great drummer but he plays with a shit pop band now. Too bad.
This guy is sick, especially when it hits 280 bpm.

Phil Rudd

I forget the guys name, but he was the drummer for toto and did some work with boz scaggs and others. I think his name is Jeff Pacaco

Sick playing right here twinks.

Billy Cobham has been a beast for decades
Jay Lane from Primus is also pretty sick

ok- serious question-
i love music. i can listen to and enjoy pretty much anything.
but i just don't 'get' jazz. at all. to me it just sounds like noise of the worst kind. what am i missing? it sounds just off and like racket. no offense to anyone who likes it, but wtf am i missing here?
-
This Video is from like 95 or 96...........Natural Born Drummer, makes me want to start playing again.
-
Video from last year, playing at Guitar Center in New york. He goes on tour/plays the drums for JAY-Z.
-
another older vid from 95.........
-
Flo Mournier, Kevin Talley, Bran Dailor, Brandon Thomas, Dave Witte, these guys are all awesome.....
Naming a greatest drummer of all times is like naming the best anything of all time, too subjective,
-
My vote goes to Vinnie Paul!
-
Jazz sucks
Someone should come over there and beat you with a Donald Byrd album and then feed you the whole Duke Ellington catolog of his works
oh, and no mention of Chick Webb?

haha, I just hate it....some of the older stuff is ok, but damn it bores me to tears. bunch of guys blowing on horns to some timing that only they and 1% of the population understands.....but it's "cool" to like jazz, so whatever....

most of it's improvised so yeah it can get boring. I never could listen to it. seems like theres no chord progression, just bass hitting notes all over the scale and a horn solo that gets monotonous.

And like you said...i don't consider myself a simpelton when it comes to music, my taste is all over the map.
But Jazz just loses me, occasionally they will get into a sick groove.....or someone will crack of an ill solo.... and your like "oh yeah...i can dig this" but then they spin off into some weird noodling that you can't follow.
-
I've heard this too many times. Jazz is like most other complex musics, it demands a lot of attention and to listen to a lot of it to get into it. As simple as that. Nobody starts listening classical music with Schoenberg, Webern or Scelsi. You have to work your way through it. But when you're there, it one of the most exciting musics there is. To me, nobody has ever topped John Coltrane.

What type of jazz are or have you listened to? Duke Ellington has a sick catalog...Donald Byrd, Coltrane---you can't go wrong with Coltrane.
Sometimes you just have to be in the mood, I've always gone by the "5 minutes" rule. I made up this rule, due to Go-Go music. That one who is not a Washington, DC native can only stand this music for 5 minutes, after that, it sounds like someone beating on pots and pans...
But, as I have matures, I have listened to what is underneath...especially with jazz...
Simply put, you or your musical mind hasn't matured yet. Afterall, Jazz was the Rock music of it's day, and no jazz would mean none of music that you listen to today---unless you listen to Classical or Folk music.
-
So many,couldn't name just one.
-
You fellas who want to try and understand jazz music should read "Sonny's Blues" by James Baldwin

you got you facts wrong brother....rock mainly comes from the blues and R+B...although Music is ALL derivative.....Rock is not a linear offshoot of jazz. Progressive rock would be more like that, guys like Jeff Beck pioneered the jazz-rock fusion in the early 70's....that kinda morphed into the Prog-Rock stuff
Not being defensive here, but my "musical mind" is quite mature...i just think Jazz is pretentious noodling and i can't be bothered...I love Classical on the other hand
-
Pink Floyd=prog rock at it's finest 8) And yeah, rock was born from da blues

Totally wrong. Jeff Beck didn't pioneer shit, you don't seem to know shit about the history of this music. Jeff Beck's "jazz-rock" recordings, mainly "Wired" and "Blow by Blow" are from 1975, prog-rock existed already with bands like King Crimson, Van Der Graaf Generator, Genesis, Yes since 1968/1969. The first jazz-rock records are generally considered to be Miles' "In A Silent Way" and "Bitches Brew" which are from 69 and 70 followed by his offsprings Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report, Return To Forever, Hancocks' Mwandishi and Headhunters which all started recording circa 1970.

I was simplifying it...Jazz is basically the father (or mother) of them all.
I wasn't really talking about your musical mind, per se, and I had to grow, I grew up playing the cello, so most of the music I played, I listened to besides Hip-Hop and R&B...but, when I would listen to Classical music (when not playing it) I would get bored, or fall asleep after 5 minutes (hence the 5 minute rule).
Before I couldn't really get into Jazz, maybe except the big bands, but listening to Dinah Washington, or Shoo Fly Pie by D. Shore, I like it, or the expressive nature of Coltrane's works, it took for me to mature as a person for me to understand it, that is what it took for me. But, it was due to my musical tastes understanding the underlying themes and melodies of Jazz music. when Guru had his Jazzmatazz albums in the early to mid 90's (mixing Hip-hop with Jazz) or Tribe Called Quest sampling tons of Jazz songs, did I not really get it, just some cool beats to me...
And actually, I was just listening to Jose James' "Park Bench People". I'll say this, if more young people got into Jazz, there would be less of them on the streets or in the UFC, and they would actually learn something...
And yes, even now, depending on my mood, the 5 min rule still can be applied, to any form of music...you try listening to Soca for more than 5 minutes...

Steve Alford was a better drummer for Guns n Roses then Matt Sornum was.
-
Oh fuck! How could I forget about Juthro Tull... Now dat is Prog Rock fellas 8)

mozart's music took listening skill, and usually only the one playing it really can appreciate. Bach's music must be thought about.
but let's be realistic, listening to those guys was like hearing a cat walking on a piano. There's no "listening" to it, it's just chromatic sludge. the tones were divided into scales for a reason. ignoring the scales and atonality just kinda goes against music.

Many musics are not exactly familiar with the concept of tones, you realize that. Though there would be a tonal center of sorts and even scales but the division of tonality is a western concept.

that's why western music is most studied and glorified.
atonal takes a lot of thought. but you can produce the same results with no thought.
that's my beef with atonal.

A progression of stacked fourths per se, may sound atonal to the untrained ear, but it isn't. Most jazz is usually based on a 7th chord progression as opposed to the usual triad progressions found in more conventional western music.

Steve Alford played PG for the Indiana Hoosiers my drunken friend? Are you referring to Steve Adler? ;D And I agree..... Sornum was too 1-2-3 by the numbers.... Adler gave them that early "live" feel on all their stuff, imo.

You fellas who want to try and understand jazz music should read "Sonny's Blues" by James Baldwin
No shit, this is EXACTLY what happened with me in college. Professor read it with Charlie Parker or someone playing in the background, and I was absolutely hooked.
Parker is a good place to start if you don't really understand jazz. Or Louis Armstrong's early stuff. You can't just jump into some of the more avant garde Coletrane ("A Love Supreme") or Thelonious Monk and expect to enjoy it much.
-
Plenty of great rock drummers out there, but the best rockers are still the ones just beating the hell outta jazz, like Bill Ward and John Bonham. Lotsa 8ths and jazzy ghost notes on the snare and hi-hat.
Listen to Matt Cameron on "Temple of the Dog" or Soundgarden's "Superunknown." Or Vinnie Appice on the first two Dio records. Both guys are just playing jazz on 11.
-
Mark Zonder is decent. Nothing flashy here, but it's got a cool groove.
With Fates W.
-
Copeland is where it's at.
Bonham is badass.
Portnoy is all triggers and no feeling. Utterly pointless in many ways. Just like Petrucci's guitar work.
Tony Royster is disgustingly good, kind of like Cobham on steroids. Jay Z should just let him go nuts all the way through the set, at least that would improve the boringness of his rapping over the course of an hour or so set!
Weckle, Calleutta and Gadd must surely be the holy trinity of drumming however!!!

Uhh... smoke on the water is essentially a progression of stacked 4th's and does not sound atonal whatsoever.
Agreed about jazz = 7th and lots more fucked up chords (dim. aug. etc)
as far as best drummer, Buddy Rich makes almost everyone else look like lost children, the wrong gig guy is awesome! and Neil Peart is a pretty good drummer, modern amazing drummers? Mike Portnoy of course from Dream Theater..
problem is , just like with shred/guitar music..most of the best guys are novelty acts and couldn't write a song to save their life... guys like michael angelo, gary howe, even tony macalpine (who I think is amazing) same with drummers, some guys are just better off as novelty acts and can't really function in a band environment (they get bored playing simple stuff) and usually have issues interacting with other musicians.
-
Hands down Neil Peart - best drummer. I have been to a lot of contests (including 4 Rush concerts), and he is incredible. When he does his solo, no one leaves - it is just awesome. Best part of a Rush concert. Long live the Professor.

Chords are stacked 4ths, true. Depends on the progression though. I should have clarified this in my previous post.
SOTW progression is G - Bb - C ---> G minor/F major/Bridge is B Flat blah blah...which isn't exactly an atonal progression. Atonal music is devoid a central tonality.
-
Not sure if he's been mentioned, but let's not forget Charlie Watts. He's solid. And for those making the jazz caveats, he's got that area covered, too.

In regards to music in recent times, 'atonal' is very subjective there's a lot more bands (esp. in metal) using really obscure and unconventional diminished and augmented progressions which 15 years ago would have been labeled absurd.
-
Not sure if he has been mentioned yet ( I never read whole threads) but Danny Carey is far and away the greatest drummer who has ever lived. Hands DOWN. I dare anyone with serious drumming knowledge to prove me wrong and state your drummer of choice and what he can do better.
