ive read many things about Deads over the years that make them seem unique among lifts; supposedly they increase your natural growth hormone output, improve muscle tone all over the body, greatly improve overall strength, and also bad things like they temporarily weaken your CNS or something like that...and i have to wonder ....do they make you shorter over time? :D
-
Well man, they basically work ALL the backside of your body, from hamstrings to traps, especially if you do the stiff-leg style. If you do conventional, you also get a bit of quad work as well, but not so much quad work.
-
I recomend Romanian Deadlifts, basically a semi-straight leg deadlift. Uses the quads just a tiny bit.
-
So what's the diff btw romanian deads and stiff-leg deads?
-
romanian deads are with stones on each side.

I think with Sevastase deadlifts you flex your knees a bit. Stiff-legged are supposed to be truly straight-kneed and are mostly a ham/glute exercise.

Do you really think that stiff deads (lol at stiff deads) are mainly directed at the glutes/hams? I think that after on passes the 2/3 mark of the lift that the lats and traps really come into play. And I hear ya Tito ma man! Maybe yo fellow countrymen Mr. Ted Van Der Parr knows a thing or 2 bout deads 8) All the way badass dude right there ;D

haha.

Hoosvelt stones? ;)

bottom 1/3rd of the movement is all legs. do deads in a rack to isolate upper body (back, traps, rear delts)
-
but do you guys think they have any effect on your height?

Maybe I'll try that, but I would want to still do both.
-
Ask Ronnie... deads for sure did something to him...
-
Serious question, where is the ideal range to work on da sexual thrusting power ;D Is it the middle part? We all know dat sexual pumping power be coming for da ass 8) I will be honest, this is THE ONLY REASON why I do this exercise 8)

Agreed.

Glutes, quads and hamstrings work hard at the bottom, but so do abs, and lower and upper back (I believe there is not much change in the upper back activation during the movement).

If deadlift makes you shorter, than any exercise with loading on the spine does it too. I don't believe it. Natural growth hormone output increase is very minor or nonexistant. Deadlift works for a lot of things because it's a big movement, like fat loss, for aerobic training, and yeah it can make very many muscles strong. Deadlift is very hard on the body. Many powerlifters deadlift every 2nd or 4th week only. Because of these big demands I would advocate light pull training, because this you can do often, but I believe it still has big benefits.
-
deadlifts destroy the back
-
no
-
deadlifts destroy the back make the back unbreakable.
There.
-
Good post klaus, but I disagree on quad involvement, even with conventional style. And yeah, you are right about powerlifters doing them very infrequently. In my own case, if I go more that 17 days without doing them, I get weaker, and my strength regresses.
-
A nice change of pace is doing them "raw". No belts, no straps, just you and the bar. 8)
-
yes, just you and barry..

Massive lol @ using DL's as isolation.
At matrix:
Yes, I read somewhere that heavy lifting compresses your spine temporarily. I'll try to find sources.
-
Doing deadlifts can make you shorter. Squats can too. Anything that puts a lot of weight and strain on the back can do it.
Doing yoga can make you a little taller too.
People's spines can get stretched out or compressed down. It can make an inch or two of difference.
Personally I never go really heavy on deads or squats. The 8-10 rep range is the lowest I go. Better to stay injury free.

Men not suffering high estrogen still exist on GB :o :o

It seems to me that barbell squats would put more compression forces on the spine than deads would, being that the bar is placed across the neck and makes a more direct compression on the spine than deads do. Just sayin... FYI, God (gh15) says that the gh/test spike from doing deads/squats is next to nil

I've been wondering about that for a while. You always hear people talk about this test spike from squatting and I thought it sounded like an urban legend.

Lets ask Fat Panda, maybe he can show us some studies.

haha.
;D

Yes, even just regular gravity will compress your spine. Measure your height first thing in the morning then last thing before you go to bed sometime.

what about your tendons?

what about your tendons?
Not sure what you mean haider. Tendons get shorter from gravity?

Been deadlifting for years, still the same height. ::)

Haha, well I'm not going to bother reading 9 pages of that shit. But the failure (rupture) strength of tendon is far beyond the force that even the most steroid-addled muscle fibers can produce.

no bro, you're supposed to bend at the knees slightly... unless you want to blow out your back... which im guessing most don't want to do. i know dorian did them with actual straight legs... but look at his laundry list of injuries.

Yeah I usually bend my knees quite a bit when I do them. It's one of the few lifts I can do an above-average amount of weight on so maybe I'm just cheating :)

nice... ya, i bend a bit too... but thats just because I feel it more in my hammys and not in my back that way. I actually feel strong when I do these... as opposed to when I bench press :-[
Damn scottish genes...

gayer than asking a man for a spot on deadlifts telling him "make sure YOU GET ME FROM THE BACK REAL TIHGT'

So what your saying is bob chick might have been 6foot tall when he was younger...then he started doing heavy donkey squats with joe weider on his back...here's the result
