Title: question for the Guitarist BODYBUILDERS
Post by: JOHN MATRIX on January 13, 2011, 03:36:25 AM
have been playing long enough that all i want now is great Tone.

want to have a sound something like david gilmour from this album;

can anyone translate this fucking calculus problem of a website/rig layout into simplified common english for me (aka what i would need pedal/amp- wise)?

http://www.gilmourish.com/?page_id=31

thanks

Only use guitar and amp. Why the gay effects?
I even removed the vol. and tone pot from my guitar

Gilmour is a fantastic player but common his tone sucks.  If you want tone try bare knuckle stormy Monday pickups. Best I've heard.

Perfect tone is subjective. (BTW This is not how Gilmour gets his tone)

A decent tube amp. (I use a Mesa Triaxis into a 100/100 6l6 Marshall Poweramp)

Guitar -> Preamp -> Time based effects in the loop run in parallel -> Power Section -> Speaker Cab

If you want effects in front of the amp get a loop switcher(GCX or Loop from Tonebone) which can take the pedals in and out of the signal path.

This will get you in the ballpark of Gilmour's sound

Guitar: Am Vintage Reissue strat with a DG20 set from EMG
Amp: Gilmour uses multiple HiWatt amps to create stereo effects but a decent Mesa/Boogie Lonestar or Stilleto would get you close. Or try the Triaxis setup I mentioned above.
Effects: Gilmour uses Big muffs, pro co rats, boss sd-1's, ce-1's, Space echos, tape echos, etc. A TC G-force will cover a lot of the ground for you instead of buying individual effects. Then you can add in anything you find is missing/not quite what you need.

This is me with a $99 Strat and a simple distorted amp.

David Gilmour's tone's main equation is this: 1) HIM! 2) His fingers 3) A Fender Stratocaster

most tone comes from the studio.  the pedals are moneymaking devices.  studio does most of the shit.

btw tone is unimportant to the music you create.

have you ever considered just hooking your guitar up to your pc and buy some good quality speakers, or hooking an amp to the output and using VSTs to get the sound you want?

a friend of mine is helping me record some music, and i never thought i could ever get a tone like that... hooked it up to a Peavy VST that has the XXX cabinet and it sounds fucking awesome... the range of tones you can get from those VSTs is endless, and they're very easy to use.

Tone comes from touch.. You develop that with experience.
After that development, you can buy some gear conducive towards the tone you're after, but remember this... you're always going to sound like yourself no matter what you play through.

Take an acoustic guitar for example...

Gilmour would still be a stand-out and identifiable.

Gilmour is a huge fan of Hiwatt's and really old vintage strat's, surprisingly he uses EMG's (SA's)

for the pedal section you can simplify his rig quite a bit with:

rat co pro overdrive
sovtek big muff
boss chorus
boss graphic eq
mxr compressor
boss digital delay

those aren't so expensive, the old school hiwatt's and vintage strat's however... $$$

gilmour has one of the craziest, cleanest sounding rigs as far as guitar players go, he's always been a huge effects hog
ever since dark side, he's actually partly responsible for a lot of effects being made/created because he was constantly experimenting with different pedals/combinations in the 70's

btw. dyslexic great job and great tone

in fact most "feel" players don't even have feel.

hit as many notes as possible, in todays music you don't want to waste time with key and scale.  just hit notes faster than the next guy.

amp setting should be HI-10
                              MID-0
                              LO-0
                              Reverb-0
                              Gain-11
volume maxed out. remember that you are most important to the band's success and that speed is everything.

Wow..great Randy Rhodes...and your Gilmour stuff is excellent too. How long have you been playing? Also, what's the best way for newbie to learn good rock and metal on the guitar? I would love to be able to play like you. I'm good on piano and keyboards but can barely play guitar besides a few riffs.

I learned music theory early in the game. It helped significantly.

I've been playing too long to remember. We had guitars in the house when I was a little kid.

As far as transitioning from the keyboard (or any musical instrument)-- your fingers will be dealing with some serious "conditioning"-- the guitar strings remind me at times of razor blades. Even after playing for all these years, I still build new callouses and not only do you end up "shredding" on the guitar, your fingers also get "shredded" much like a cheese grater would do.

You gotta stick with it. Make a committment. Learn your notes and scales.

If I had to suggest the best scale to start with, I would choose the "Pentatonic"--there are instructional vids all of YT. You can learn picking techniques and all that jazz, but the bottom line will be just plain sticking with it. Kinda like bodybuilding. Sooner or later, something has to be achieved.

Dyslexic... man, the way you bend, you gotta start playing some of the country shred stuff out there (being dead serious).  Its about as challenging to play as anything out there, and sounds really cool once you get good.  This dude, Josh Zee (he has the most watch youtube video on expert village as well) of the Mother Truckers, is a metal shred guy turned country shred guy, he wails, go to 2:45:

dyslexic, you're using some echo/delay in your gilmour stuff, let's be fair.

good work though, i have an olympic white usa strat (maple fretboard though).

keys, scales?  who needs to know those when there's so many pedals out there?

they would have the basic knowledge, essentially, but the two instruments and their functions (in your standard rock band) are wildly different.  I've only met a few people who were really good at both.  I've met people who were serviceable at one and great at the other, but people that are great at both are few and far between.

Of course I am!

But for a beginner, that's almost like saying to an ASSpiring young bodybuilder "Get some juice first"

I am basically saying "Learn to play first"

But yeah, to be "fair" you have to deal with some distortion, chorus, echo, tremelo...delay.."

I guess my point was this: "If Gilmour handed you all of his shit, would you sound like him?"

Play acoustic all you'll need for good tone is lots of practice.  All the gear in the store won't matter.  This guy, Bryan Sutton, has the best tone in acoustic music today.  You should check out his vids.  Unreal.  This vid has a lot of good tips.  Sick on the electric too.

it's because he doesn't pretend to play with "emotion" and then just stand up and wank a blues scale up and down

This thread...

Didnt John Cougar Mellancamp have a song called "Play guitar?"

You may drive around in your town
Ina brand new shiny car
Your face in the wind your haircut's in
And your friends think you're bizarre
You may find a cushy job and I hope that you go far
But if you really want to taste some cool success
You better learn to play guitar

[Chorus:]
Play guitar-play guitar [3x]

You got your eye on the cheerleader queen
You're walkin' her home from school
You know that she's only seventeen
She's gonna make you a fool
You know you can't touch this stuff
Without money or a brand new car
Let me give you some good advice young man
You better learn to play guitar

[Chorus]

All women around the world want a phony rock star
Who plays guitar
You can pump your iron and shine your shoes
And wear your hair just right
You go down out on cruisin' street
'Cause you want to score tonight
Ra da ra da ra da
And you really want to show your scars
forget all about that macho shit
And learn how to play guitar

Not sure what he was referring to in the "pump your iron and shine your shoes..." could be taken more than one way. Maybe he meant 'yank your crank' or maybe he meant actually 'lift weights'
