Gilmour is a huge fan of Hiwatt's and really old vintage strat's, surprisingly he uses EMG's (SA's)

for the pedal section you can simplify his rig quite a bit with:

rat co pro overdrive
sovtek big muff
boss chorus
boss graphic eq
mxr compressor
boss digital delay

those aren't so expensive, the old school hiwatt's and vintage strat's however... $$$

gilmour has one of the craziest, cleanest sounding rigs as far as guitar players go, he's always been a huge effects hog
ever since dark side, he's actually partly responsible for a lot of effects being made/created because he was constantly experimenting with different pedals/combinations in the 70's

btw. dyslexic great job and great tone

just remember "feel" is no excuse to play slow and shitty.

in fact most "feel" players don't even have feel.

hit as many notes as possible, in todays music you don't want to waste time with key and scale.  just hit notes faster than the next guy.

amp setting should be HI-10
                              MID-0
                              LO-0
                              Reverb-0
                              Gain-11
volume maxed out. remember that you are most important to the band's success and that speed is everything.

O.K. then...  ;D

Wow..great Randy Rhodes...and your Gilmour stuff is excellent too. How long have you been playing? Also, what's the best way for newbie to learn good rock and metal on the guitar? I would love to be able to play like you. I'm good on piano and keyboards but can barely play guitar besides a few riffs.

musically this will help the most. take it to the max then deal with those wretched six stringed instruments.

I learned music theory early in the game. It helped significantly.

I've been playing too long to remember. We had guitars in the house when I was a little kid.

As far as transitioning from the keyboard (or any musical instrument)-- your fingers will be dealing with some serious "conditioning"-- the guitar strings remind me at times of razor blades. Even after playing for all these years, I still build new callouses and not only do you end up "shredding" on the guitar, your fingers also get "shredded" much like a cheese grater would do.

You gotta stick with it. Make a committment. Learn your notes and scales.

If I had to suggest the best scale to start with, I would choose the "Pentatonic"--there are instructional vids all of YT. You can learn picking techniques and all that jazz, but the bottom line will be just plain sticking with it. Kinda like bodybuilding. Sooner or later, something has to be achieved.

Dyslexic... man, the way you bend, you gotta start playing some of the country shred stuff out there (being dead serious).  Its about as challenging to play as anything out there, and sounds really cool once you get good.  This dude, Josh Zee (he has the most watch youtube video on expert village as well) of the Mother Truckers, is a metal shred guy turned country shred guy, he wails, go to 2:45:

dyslexic, you're using some echo/delay in your gilmour stuff, let's be fair.

good work though, i have an olympic white usa strat (maple fretboard though).

keys, scales?  who needs to know those when there's so many pedals out there?

Yeah I know that this is probably a really dumbass question, so y'all will have to forgive me ignorance, but if one can play a mean guitar can they also play a mean bass?

they would have the basic knowledge, essentially, but the two instruments and their functions (in your standard rock band) are wildly different.  I've only met a few people who were really good at both.  I've met people who were serviceable at one and great at the other, but people that are great at both are few and far between.

Of course I am!

But for a beginner, that's almost like saying to an ASSpiring young bodybuilder "Get some juice first"

I am basically saying "Learn to play first"

But yeah, to be "fair" you have to deal with some distortion, chorus, echo, tremelo...delay.."

I guess my point was this: "If Gilmour handed you all of his shit, would you sound like him?"

Play acoustic all you'll need for good tone is lots of practice.  All the gear in the store won't matter.  This guy, Bryan Sutton, has the best tone in acoustic music today.  You should check out his vids.  Unreal.  This vid has a lot of good tips.  Sick on the electric too.
