...played on a Strat
-
WTF is this shit ???
-
You have got to be kidding.
I know Eric is a legend, but he basically sucks as far as lead guitar solos are concerned. He is a song-writer, composer, much like Zappa. Eddie Van Halen he is not.
I know, Eddie was "inspired" by him, but not in the way most would assume.
He is the last guy I would choose for a "best guitar solo ever" thread. If I had to choose "old-school" guitarists I would choose Alvin Lee, Dickie Betts, Hendrix, Jeff Beck...
I know lotta guys like Clapton for some reason. Watch his "Crossroads" double live DVD. He has a million guitarists on there. All of them blow his doors off.
Of course, that is only my humble opinion and I don't even play the guitar. ;D

True.
I agree with most of that. (I'm a huge Eddie VH fan.) But did you listen to this? Clapton stepped his game up here. Starts at about 5:09. And I don't think all of those guys were playing Fenders.
-
most overrated guitarist ever. ::)
There are thousands of high school kids that would outplay him. Most people that think he is great don't play any instruments.

Nothing wrong with enjoying good music but to proclaim this dude as a great guitarist is nonsense. Just keep listening to your music while us real musicians weigh in on who is great.

Hendix, dipshits.

I may be...fuckit, I am, a little drunk...but Clapton didn't make his bones being a composer. He is a great guitarist. And I'm pretty sure I could wipe the stage with you "outby43". Maybe, maybe not; but don't assume I don't play because I recognize the genius in this SOLO.
Fuck it I work with a LP anyway. The original idea was giving props to the whole Fender sound.
-
'Best', is subjective.

I played an awesome solo on the flesh flute earlier

All three are different Strats, none of them "expensive..."

If you don't know Tommy Emmanuel, you don't know shit about guitar......

Heh, heh…
For giggles and grins, though, another of my favorite guitar solos (starts at 1:42)

That was some mighty fine playing by Clapton, and he did something there that Hendrix never did - he played it in his shorts.

I consider that a compliment from the highest level.

Best cover version ever by miles.
The second solo that starts at 1'42" is my all time favourite.

Good guitar thread for a change!!
-
SRV and big bro Jimmie

Denny Dias

I like Clapton, but he's been playing the same licks and phrases since 1972.
I started playing when I was 12 and I could play everything Clapton played by the time I was 16.
-
Robin Trower, one seriously ugly mother f ucker but he can make a stratocaster sing.
Love jamming to this tune on my midnight rides on my HD.
-

Good stuff. Trower's singer, James Dewar, was great.
The cool thing about youtube is that you can put the greats side by side and compare them, and, from what I've seen, there is no acoustic guitarist better than Bert Jansch.

The guy's got talent on guitar, no doubt, but unless he can write ORIGINAL great songs, the money he'll be making is $50 on a Saturday night playing in a Journey tribute band.

the painful truth
too many guitarist and no enough musicians. today you can just write a poem, steal a chord progression, and hope you get radio time. musical talent is irrelevant to success.
-
am I the only one who loves this guitar solo?
everybody likes the same shit: SRV, David Gilmoure, stairway to heaven, Dime, Wylde ::) etc.
-

exactly. yes, there may be high schoolers out there who can "outplay" Clapton (and i seriously doubt that), but they can't write a 3 note progression if their life depended on it.

So are you saying that someone who has writing talent can make some decent cash selling their lyrics to make a song? I've got decent writing talent, but zero musical talent. Yeah, I've written lots of lyrics, but I'm not sure that they could be transformed into a song.
-
Here is a simple fact. If something is popular, it's generally worthless garbage due to the fact the general public is simple minded and lazy. They don't want to put in the effort it takes to understand and appreciate complex art forms, and prefer simplistic tripe instead as it takes less brain power.
The best music generally goes unheard, or heard and appreciated by few for the most part.
-
LOL you've got to be kidding.

What I'm saying is that there's a wide gulf between being able to play SOMEONE ELSE'S stuff, and creating your own. This silliness about "I could play Clapton's solos when I was 3 months old." Let's hear YOUR song that's as good as "Layla."

LOL...it's not a common term here, but it's generally used when referring to a child or youth. It also means 'fellow, chap etc' though. :)
-
He's right unless dyslexic .can write his own solos that also fit with the other instruments he could never be a pro. No offense I could listen to you rock that strat all day being a guitar player myself but technically your no better than I am, and you don't need to be. But you do need to be able to create world clahhss solos of your own t anything big. G15

are you a Aussie ?
-
Uhhhhhhhhhhhhh...
My point was that a guitar solo is different than composition. Some here picked up on that, others didn't. As usual, the context of a subject gets skewed and twisted here "Oh so fucking easily..."
Can I write a song? Nobody here knows the answer to that.
Can I make a living at playing the guitar?
Do I possibly just teach guitar and not perform?
Am I capable of doing both?
Have I ever even considered trying to make a living at playing or teaching guitar?
Is it true, that all I am is a good copy cat of other people's original material while having "0" originality of my own?
Well, to tell you the truth, all you can gather from the videos is that I'm an O.K guitarist and that I'm playing three different cheap Fender Stratocasters.
I will let you all just 'wonder' about the rest.
I might be a Safety and Compliance director for a large trucking company.
I might own my own personal training business.
I might do professional computer graphics for movie making companies.
I might be bilingual and work in a government job.
It is what it is. I'm just a little jackass sitting around copying other peoples shit and then posting on Youtube hoping that somehow, someway, I become "magically" famous...
Now I can laugh (or cry) myself to sleep. Ha ha. Ja ja.
BTW, as long as it was 'gh15 approved' I mean, who really cares? I think there are a few blank stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame just waiting for me...
I may have just stepped on one at the corner of Hollywood and Cherokee... damn! Wait, I don't want my name stepped on by some rag head working in this P.O.S convenience store everyday... shit.
-
the point is that this fella can bring his to a band or anything,,i talk only guiatr level performance,,the problem for him is to find that eddie vedder,,kurt kobain,,and other equaly telented individual to take the all thing somewhere,,he can bring his own ,,listen to the level of playing its no amaturish,,no go find eddie vedder....lol music in general is not what it used to be,,today is all computer programing ,,you dont need to know shit,, but neverthe less he can be great studio guitarist ,,they get payed more than 50$ lol

I disagree. While some may not consider an improvised solo 'composed' b/c it's made up on the spot, most solos are 'composed'. If you're sitting down to develop and practice a solo before it's performed, that's considered composition.

Good point, but kind of "over the top" for a 'bodybuilding forum'
Had I posted these vids on a music forum under the topic of 'composition'--well, we could go on for days.
The fact of the matter is, I do write original music. I also have numerous people that write for me. They are not musicians. Some people are natural "lyricists" much like poets.
Now, if you can do that, and be able to put it to music that is catchy enough to sell, well then, you are a "composer" and may have the capability of becoming something.
Getting a contract and continually creating music that is attractive is something that only few bands can do.
The ones that do it for a lifetime, like the Stones, are just beyond words to me. How can someone write hit after hit for decades? They have a knack for it.
How many songs has Bob Dylan written for others that became their biggest hits?
My heart is not in music. I have no desire to be "famous" in the music world. Music is a hobby for me, just like bodybuilding, or anything else that I do.
If I had to be realistic and say: "I must make money at this in order to survive"- I wouldn't plant myself on the strip and hit up every producer I could find. I would simply open up my own studio and make a name for myself as a guitar teacher, much like Randy Rhoades did. That is where his heart was. Unfortunately he died before he could get back to his mom's store in Pasadena and start teaching again.
-

If what you do here with your dialect is your idea of "funny" ....I doubt you have much talent as a writer
-
IMHO this is the best guitar solo ever laid down in a studio. Here's a little back story...
The group all dropped acid before they started recording. George Clinton(the leader of Funkadelic) told Eddie Hazel(R.I.P.) to play as if he just found out his mother died. So he proceeded to play the most emotional heart wrenching solo you're likely to ever hear. It wasn't rehearsed. It was recorded in 1 take.
-
Well, my writing talent many has to do with romantic "verses" and some haiku. Believe it or not, I've had many people tell me that I have very good writing talent, particularly with creating a "beautiful picture" with my words. Believe me, I really do hate to admit that I'm such a "romantic" guy. Here are some of my fav romantic lyrics, "Love soft as an easy chair, love fresh as the morning air. Oh, love let us share that tune I have found in you" from Evergreen by Barbara Striesand

best solo ever.

-
Supposedly Jimmy Page's fav solo was Steely Dans "Realin in the years"
-
Well, dat "corny shit" sure did make Babs and Paul Williams (the writer of those lyrics) some decent cash, seeing that "Evergreen" was a major hit back in the day ;D So I take it that you prefer more gritty lyrics like these ones, "You better stay home and do as you're told, get out of the road if you want to grow old" from Sheep by Pink Floyd
-
And Denny Dias was the guitar man in the solo from Steely Dan's Reeling in the Years.

Just because something is popular doesn't mean its good.....as I recall the Spice Girls sold a few records in their day.
Now I'm fully aware that Paul Williams was a very accomplished lyricist. ...but I'd take Burt Bacarach , Bernie Taupin or Carol King over him...if we are sticking to "maudlin love songs" for $500.
;D
But as far as what I like. ..its not an" either or" thing

not a strat but still one of my favorites, solo at 1:36,
Also some nice blues soloing in this:

Sorry, I don't hear it. To me that was musically uninteresting and there was not much technical skill involved either. Even the tone was not much,,,
NN
-
Love this track from Peter Green, a few years before he founded Fleetwood Mac.
-
And Denny Dias was the guitar man in the solo from Steely Dan's Reeling in the Years.
I thought there were two: Jeff "the Skunk" Baxter and Tommy Tedesco (at least on the studio cut)
-
You could be right man, maybe it was Skunk's riff. I think that Dias played that wicked riff in "Do it again" though. And how about the riff in "Peg" from the Aja album, was that Skunk Baxter?
-
Carlos Santana
Eddie Van Halen
Eric Clapton
Jimi Hendrix
Don't know his name......but he played in Focus (early 70s) the song was Hocus Pocus
Jeff Beck (in a league of his own)
Joe Satriani
Jimmy Page

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elliott_Randall
You're both wrong. The dyslexic is correct about line-up at one point of Steely Dan's career, Elliot Randall was more of a studio guy at one time so he really just played on a record and no tours. Tommy Tedesco was like this too. Why go on the road spending money and making little of it, when you can stay at home record and get session pay for 20 sessions a day (Tedesco did this fairly regularly) and you're not sleeping on a bench seat in a van somewhere?
As far as greatest solo ever? You cannot pinpoint that. You have your punk rock fan, and he'll discount a Jimmie Vaughan solo with 15 total notes because the JLV doesn't have an aggressive attack. Yngwie can play neo-classical and tear up Paganini like nobody else. But he can't (or hasn't released evidence) that he can be Joe Pass, Grant Green or the guy from Good Charlotte.
Different styles hold different values for everyone.
