So now we have at least one report from local TV in Wisconsin that the state's Democratic senators have left the state entirely, putting them out of the reach of the state police who have been ordered to round them up so that Republicans have a quorum and can take up Gov. Walker's union-busting budget bill.

But wait. There's more.

The Senate majority leader, Scott Fitzgerald, who is ordering the state police to track down the wayward Democratic senators is the son of the head of the state police, Steve Fitzgerald, who in turn was appointed to the top spot by Walker. Steve Fitzgerald is also the father of the state's speaker of the House, Jeff Fitzgerald.

As for whether the Democratic senators have in fact left the state, the spokesperson for the state Democratic Party tells TPM: "I know the whereabouts of not a single Democratic senator. I do not know what latitude they're on, or know what longitude they're on. I assume they're in this hemisphere, I'll say that."

Budget Battle: GOP Senator Says Dems Have Left State
By Jay Sorgi and the Associated Press

MADISON - The State Senate has convened in Wisconsin to discuss, debate and possibly vote on Governor Scott Walker's controversial budget bill, but not all the Senate members are there; all Democrats in the Senate are absent.

Law enforcement officials are looking for at least one Democratic senator to bring in for a quorum required for a fiscal measure, but River Hills Republican Senator Alberta Darling claimed to Newsradio 620 WTMJ that all the Democrats got on one bus and left the state.

"Guess where they are?  They got on a bus, left and went to another state.  That's pretty awful," said Darling to Newsradio 620 WTMJ's John Mercure.

But according to the Twitter account of Democrat State Senator Chris Larson from Bay View, "For those looking for us, we are right here, standing with the people of Wisconsin."

When asked by TODAY'S TMJ4's Tom Murray why he would not divulge his location, he said "I don't want those details to take away from the message being sent by the people of Wisconsin."

As observers in the senate chamber were shouting over the microphoned senators, a roll call was happening with no Senate Democrat in the chambers, and the discussion, debate and vote cannot occur because a 3/5ths quorum cannot be reached.
"The senate is now under a call of the house, and we will try to find the members who decided not to show up for work today.  We will stand informal pending the resolution of the call of the house," said State Senator Mike Ellis.

A staff member for Senator Lena Taylor (D.-Milwaukee) said that office staffers cannot even leave their office because of the commotion inside the Capitol.

With the Democrats gone, not enough Senators are available for a quorum to vote on the bill.

"We do not have the 3/5th's" said Ellis to cheers in the crowd.

"We will leave the call of the house on until we receive enough members to continue to do business.  I don't know how long that will take."

"Once we have enough people to continue to work, if they're still in the building, you will hear this bell and the Senate will be reconvened."

The wait could happen for as long as hours, or even days, until a Democratic senator comes in.

The proposal has been the focus of intense protests at the Statehouse for three days. As Republicans tried to begin Senate business Thursday, observers in the gallery screamed "Freedom! Democracy! Unions!"

Republicans hold a 19-14 majority, but they need at least one Democrat to be present before taking a vote on the bill.

Democratic Minority Leader Mark Miller released a statement on behalf of all Democrats urging Gov. Scott Walker and Republicans to listen to opponents of the measure and seek a compromise. His statement did not address where Democrats were or when they planned to return.

Bill opponents in the Senate gallery cheered when Senate President Mike Ellis announced that there were not enough senators present to proceed.

The bill came to the Senate after the Legislature's budget committee endorsed it just before midnight Wednesday.

Walker and Republican leaders have said they have the votes to pass the plan.

That didn't stop thousands of protesters from clogging the hallway outside the Senate chamber beating on drums, holding signs deriding Walker and pleading for lawmakers to kill the bill. Protesters also demonstrated outside the homes of some lawmakers.

Hundreds of teachers called in sick, forcing a number of school districts to cancel classes. Madison schools, the state's second-largest district with 24,000 students, closed for a second day as teachers poured into the Capitol.

Hundreds more people, many of them students from the nearby University of Wisconsin, slept in the rotunda for a second night.

"We are all willing to come to the table, we've have all been willing from day one," said Madison teacher Rita Miller. "But you can't take A, B, C, D and everything we've worked for in one fell swoop."

The head of the 98,000-member statewide teachers union called on all Wisconsin residents to come to the Capitol on Thursday for the votes in the Senate and Assembly.

"Our goal is not to close schools, but instead to remain vigilant in our efforts to be heard," said Wisconsin Education Association Council President Mary Bell.

The proposal marks a dramatic shift for Wisconsin, which passed a comprehensive collective bargaining law in 1959 and was the birthplace of the national union representing all non-federal public employees.

But so far, Democrats have been powerless to stop the bill.

"The story around the world is the rush to democracy," said Democratic Sen. Bob Jauch of Poplar. "The story in Wisconsin is the end of the democratic process."

In addition to eliminating collective bargaining rights, the legislation also would make public workers pay half the costs of their pensions and at least 12.6 percent of their health care coverage -- increases Walker calls "modest" compared with those in the private sector.

Republican leaders said they expected Wisconsin residents would be pleased with the savings the bill would achieve -- $30 million by July 1 and $300 million over the next two years to address a $3.6 billion budget shortfall.

"I think the taxpayers will support this idea," Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald said.

Wisconsin has long been a bastion for workers' rights. It was the first state to grant collective bargaining rights to public employees more than a half-century ago. And the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees was founded in 1936 in Madison.

But when voters elected Walker, an outspoken conservative, along with GOP majorities in both legislative chambers, it set the stage for a dramatic reversal of the state's labor history.

Under Walker's plan, state employees' share of pension and health care costs would go up by an average of 8 percent.

Unions still could represent workers, but could not seek pay increases above those pegged to the Consumer Price Index unless approved by a public referendum. Unions also could not force employees to pay dues and would have to hold annual votes to stay organized.

In exchange for bearing more costs and losing bargaining leverage, public employees were promised no furloughs or layoffs. Walker has threatened to order layoffs of up to 6,000 state workers if the measure does not pass.

Thousands of Union Protesters Storm WI State Capitol; Target Homes of GOP Lawmakers

Behind closed doors, Scott Walker, the Republican who has been governor for about six weeks, calmly described his intent to forge ahead with the plans that had set off the uprising: He wants to require public workers to pay more for their health insurance and pensions, effectively cutting the take-home pay of many by around 7 percent.

...

Scott Fitzgerald, the Republican leader in the State Senate, slipped out of the Capitol Wednesday morning with his sunglasses on, head down. Protesters had gone to his home earlier in the week, forcing his family (including his wife, a school guidance counselor) to go elsewhere for a bit.

Budget Battle: Democrats Who Left State are Located

MADISON - Democratic State Senators who protested the budget repair bill by leaving the state have been found.

The lawmakers are in the Best Western Clock Tower in Rockford Illinois.

Law enforcement officials have been looking for at least one Democratic senator to bring in for a quorum required for a fiscal measure, but Democratic Senator Jon Erpenbach confirmed to Newsradio 620 WTMJ that he and all of his Democratic colleagues boarded a bus and left the state.

"We're not in Wisconsin right now," Erpenbach said.  "The reason why we're doing this is because there are some jurisdictional issues that we'd be dealing with."

A Liberal Meltdown in Wisconsin [The First of Many Dems Nightmares]

The Wisconsin State Capitol is currently locked down. Pro-union protesters are intimidating legislators by pounding on windows, screaming insults and vandalising public property. Above is a picture of union protestors, many of whom are teachers who called off sick to storm the Capitol. Teacher strikes are illegal in Wisconsin.

The Senate needs 20 members present for a quorum; there are 19 Republicans. Sen. Roberta Darling (R) told the media today that all Democrat Senators are on a bus heading out of the state so as to avoid quorum. The police have been dispatched to find them and drag them back to the Capitol to represent their constituents.

The events unfolding in Madison today completely validate SB 11 itself...

DNC.DNC playing role in Wisconsin protests

The Democratic National Committee's Organizing for America arm -- the remnant of the 2008 Obama campaign -- is playing an active role in organizing protests against Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker's attempt to strip most public employees of collective bargaining rights.

OfA, as the campaign group is known, has been criticized at times for staying out of local issues like same-sex marraige, but it's riding to the aide of the public sector unions who hoping to persuade some Republican legislators to oppose Walker's plan. And while Obama may have his difference with teachers unions, OfA's engagement with the fight -- and Obama's own clear stance against Walker -- mean that he's remaining loyal to key Democratic Party allies at what is, for them, a very dangerous moment.

OfA Wisconsin's field efforts include filling buses and building turnout for the rallies this week in Madison, organizing 15 rapid response phone banks urging supporters to call their state legislators, and working on planning and producing rallies, a Democratic Party official in Washington said.

The @OFA_WI twitter account has published 54 tweets promoting the rallies, which the group has also plugged on its blog.

"At a time when most folks are still struggling to get back on their feet, Gov. Walker has asked the state legislature to strip public employees of their collective bargaining rights. Under his plan, park rangers, teachers, and prison guards would no longer be able to fight back if the new Republican majority tries to slash their health benefits or pensions," OfA Wisconsin State Director Dan Grandone wrote supporters in an email. "But that's not even the most shocking part: The governor has also put the state National Guard on alert in case of 'labor unrest.' We can't -- and won't -- let Scott Walker's heavy-handed tactics scare us. This Tuesday and Wednesday, February 15th and 16th, volunteers will be attending rallies at the state

He continued:

Gov. Walker won't even talk to state workers about his proposal to strip them of their rights. He is ignoring Wisconsin voices today and asking for the power to drown them out permanently tomorrow.

We're ready to do all we can to make sure that doesn't happen. OFA volunteers are going to fight for our friends with state jobs, our allies in organized labor, and the freedom of all Wisconsinites to organize their communities.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Police have hand-cuffed a protester at the state Capitol after he apparently tried to charge into the state Assembly.

Moments before a roll call began in the Assembly Thursday, reporters heard a crash outside the chamber. They rushed out and saw a man on the ground. Police officers were on top of him.

Missing Wisconsin Dem speaks: We're MIA until GOP drops assault on workers rights washington post ^ | 2/17/2011 | Greg Sargent

just got off the phone with Wisconsin State Senator Chris Larson, one of the Democrats who has left the capitol in order to stall the GOP's plan to rolll back the bargaining rights of public employees. Speaking to me by cell phone from an undisclosed location, Larson said he and his fellow Democrats would not return until the GOP takes its assault on organizing rights "off the table."

"Each of us is in a secure location," he told me, confirming that they were not all together but were monitoring events on the Web and on Twitter. Larson refused to say whether he and his fellow Dems had left the state, as some have speculated.

Now we know who is really serious about dealing with deficits. Hint: Its not the Democrats. I like Christ Christi and what he is doing in New Jersey, but he was wrong in his most recent speech when he said this is not a partisan issue, Cuomo not withstanding. It is just like Democrats to get out of town when a Republican gets serious about cutting the budget. What's even more pathetic and stupid is how Obama got into this mess. How do all you Dems and Libs out there square this? Why should public employees be getting free healthcare and free pensions when 10% of the country is unemployed?

What I am really offended at is the people who are against the governor for this, even people who voted for him. And there is the rub guys. The crux of the issue. The real problem with all the stupid people in this country. Americans want to have thier cake and eat it too. My god. This is really bad. The governor has found what should have been a very non contreversial way to cut the budget - getting public employees' healthcare and pension contributions more in line with those of the private sector. And it becomes a big controversey. I'll say it again: Americans are doing this to themselves.

Now, I want you guys to be ready for a tactic from the Democrats. This is what they are going to say. I know these poeple very well. They are going to mention the fact that the public pension fund of Wisconsin is fully furnised and does not need to be replenished, and therefore public employees do not need to contribute more. And your response should be: ANd therefore what? The state budget is used to pay off the pension fund, and the state has a shortfall of a billion dollars. It is used to contribute to the pension fund.

You see, I know these people very well. What they do is present facts that are usually 100% accurate. BUt the problem is that they are never relevant to the situation.

Everybody is looking out for themselves first-and-foremost thats just how it is

But it seems that they are not aware of the economic situation we are in and they should be lucky to have a job

Maybe Christie should take a debate with these people he seem to know how to get his message through :)

Im my experience the public sector folks do seem to think they have a guarantee for their work/pentions etc unlike those of us who work in the private sector. However they need to realise that the public sector is only made possible because of the productivity of the private sector.

Obama Calls Wisconsin Budget Bill 'Assault on Unions' (Obama approves of Government shutdowns)
Fox News ^ | 2/18/2011 | fox news

________________________ ___________________

President Obama has accused Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, a Republican, of unleashing "an assault" on unions by pressing legislation that would end collective bargaining rights for public employees and sharply increase their health care and pension payments.

"Some of what I've heard coming out of Wisconsin, where you're just making it harder for public employees to collectively bargain generally seems like more of an assault on unions," Obama told WTMJ-TV in a White House interview Wednesday. "And I think it's very important for us to understand that public employees, they're our neighbors, they're our friends."

"I think everybody's got to make some adjustments, but I think it's also important to recognize that public employees make enormous contributions to our states and our citizens," he continued.

But Walker said the demands on public employees are "modest" compared with those in the private sector, and are meant to prevent a shutdown, which could result in 6,000 state workers not getting paid.

Obama WANTS Wisconsin Mess
By Quin Hillyer on 2.17.11 @ 10:46PM

http://spectator.org/blog/2011/02/17/obama-wants-wisconsin-mess

________________________ ________________________ _____________

Over at NRO, Jay guy makes an incredibly good point: Barack Obama should be urging calm in Wisconsin, no matter WHAT side of the underlying issue he is on. It is not just unpresidential of him, but despicable, for him in effect to be urging on the mass demonstrations. But as J. Christian Adams, Justice Department whistle-blower extraordinaire, reminded me in an email accompanying this post of his, these are not only the tactics always favored by the left in general, but specifically the sorts of tactics Obama himself was trained in -- AND exactly what I myself warned about (as Christian reminded me) in my very first post-presidential election column in 2008.

And, always, a few carefully calibrated street demonstrations, splashed with just the right headlines across the East Coast newspapers and captured by just the right camera angle on CBS News, will be used any time, on any issue, to make the point that civil unrest would be the price of resistance to the benevolent desires of the Obama regime.

In that same column I rightly warned that the Obamites would find a way to finagle the 60th vote needed in the Senate for a filibuster-proof majority. I warned: "Watch what Michael Barone called the Obama 'thugocracy' use the Justice Department to stifle dissent." And: "Provision after provision giving favors to the trial bar so it can sue enemies into submission. Copious new regulations, especially environmental, to be used selectively to ensnare other conservative malcontents." And so on.

These tactics come right out of Saul Alinsky's playbook.

These are dangerous times. The Obama left will not go quietly into that good night. And they will not let their targets sleep quietly at night. They want their targets -- in the Wisconsin legislature, and at Speaker Boehner's house, and, watch, in other places as well -- to feel fear of the mob.

I have news for them. We don't fear them. We think they are beneath contempt, these rabbles of rabid radicals. In America, we are above these hoodlums, and we transcend them. We are a society of ordered liberty, and we have endured worse than these pathetic paraders will muster.

They have Saul Alinsky. We have James Madison and George Washington. We win, they lose.

Unions want to overturn election result
e-mail print Feb. 16, 2011 |(183) Comments

________________________ ________________________ ______________-

Say you generally liked Gov. Scott Walker's move to rein in government labor costs but had a few doubts on his method. The last few days should have cleared that up nicely.

The public-sector union tantrums, meant to make lawmakers wobble, have an inadvertent message for the rest of us: Voters can vote all they want. We can elect a cheapskate governor and a Legislature to match. But come the moment, unions will have the last, loudest word.

They'll have it if takes marches. They'll have it if it takes what amounts to an illegal strike, with so many Madison teachers calling in sick Wednesday that the district closed schools. If it takes showing up for a we-know-where-your-family-is protest on Walker's Wauwatosa lawn while he was at work, the unions are sure they can outshout any election result.

This is exactly why Walker is right to limit the unions' power over government spending.

Walker, remember, is not removing unions' fundamental power to bargain for wages. He is demanding that state workers put 5.8% of their wages toward retirement and that they cover 12.6% of their health care premiums, which would still have them paying more than $100 less a month than the average schmoe. He is also proposing that elected officials determine the shape of employee benefits without having to bargain them, and this as much as the added cost has unions crying "unfair."

They insist this is the end of unionization in government, something to which they have as much right, they say, as anyone else.

But they miss a bedrock difference. Unions in the private sector are a way of organizing private interests, those of employees, against other private interests, those of a company's owners, for economic gain and for protection against unfairness. In government, workers are already protected against unfairness by civil service laws, and Walker has supported expanding those. Economically, government unions pit a private interest, that of employees, against the public's interest, that of taxpayers and voters.

We see the result. Walker's moves are prompted by the state's vast deficit. The alternative, he says, is to lay off thousands. Nonsense, charge the marchers: Just raise taxes. Unions and allies have for years been demanding more sales taxes, new business taxes and higher taxes on other people's incomes, all to keep the state flush and generous. We're taxed enough already, said a voting majority in November. Not yet, insist the unions that have become the largest players in Wisconsin politics precisely to counter any such voter sentiment.

Anyway, union leaders were conceding the pension and health care premiums by this week. They said they knew they'd have to pay more eventually - so when unions in December said such payments were tantamount to slavery, it must have been just maneuvering. Bygones, say unions, as long as Walker leaves them the power to set health benefits via bargaining. Leave that, they say, and it's peace.

Yeah? Recall how we got here. How is it that only in desperation will unions accept a deal that still leaves them better off than everyone else? How did we achieve not just next year's $3.3 billion deficit but the decade of structural deficits before? Easy: It's because labor costs for years have been outstripping taxpayers' capacity. That in turn was caused by officials, elected in a union-dominated political environment, buying labor peace via benefits, where it's harder for voters to see the costs adding up.

If the Legislature takes the 5% and 12% and doesn't reform collective bargaining, the 5% and 12% soon will be won back by unions. Any further savings are out the window. Walker talks of moving to consumer-driven benefits, as many companies have done, to restrain medical costs. That's anathema to unions, who will resist it contract by contract. Without bargaining reform, government costs will have taken only a pause in their ascent.

Union activists in Madison Tuesday spoke apocalyptically of "class war," hinting wildly at general strikes and takeovers of the Capitol. They correctly see their control of the state slipping and must figure that if they bring 13,000 shouting people to Madison, they can overrule the election.

Any worried legislators should keep in mind that Walker drew about five times that many votes in Dane County alone in November.

They attack the fact that bonuses is given in the private sector. They fail to forget not all of us are CEO's and we get our bonuses for work performed meaning you bust your ass that much more. Many public employees dont get this concept because they are on a fixed pay regardless so they get paid for sitting their ass. Much like in Communism

Officials with the Hudson School District have decided to cancel classes Friday because of what they call 'the unusually high teacher absences."

District officials also cited a lack of qualified substitutes.

The state's largest school district has joined those that have canceled classes due to teacher shortages caused by union protests at the state Capitol.

Officials say more than 600 of the 5,400 teachers in Milwaukee Public Schools called in sick Friday to attend the protests over Gov. Scott Walker's budget repair bill. The district has more than 82,000 students at 184 schools.

Schools in Madison, Janesville, Wisconsin Dells and other districts around Wisconsin are also closed. Teachers and other state union workers are upset that Republican Gov. Scott Walker wants to curtail their collective bargaining rights and is asking them to contribute more to their health insurance and pensions.

Angry public workers have packed the state Capitol in Madison in protest.

Wis. governor: GOP won't be 'bullied' by union bill protesters

By Jordan Fabian - 02/18/11 07:55 AM ET

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) says his party has been emboldened by massive protests against his controversial budget plan.

Walker said demonstrators who filled the state capitol building in Madison and the boycott by state Senate Democrats — some of whom fled the state in protest — have steeled the resolve of members of his party.

"If anything, I think it's made the Republicans in the Assembly and the Senate stronger," he told Fox News's Greta Van Susteren in an interview Thursday night. "They're not going to be bullied. They're not going to be intimidated."

Walker also fired back at President Obama, who sided with the public employees, saying on Fox News Friday, "We are focused on balancing our budget. It would be wise for the government and others in Washington to focus on balancing their budgets, which they are a long way off from doing."

The unrest in Wisconsin has attracted attention from national lawmakers and political figures, who have incorporated the state's tussle over Walker's budget proposal into the debate over the federal government's fiscal woes.

Public-sector workers are upset with the plan, which calls on them to pay to receive pension and health benefits and removes collective bargaining rights for some.

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) issued a statement backing Walker's proposal, saying governors like Walker "are daring to speak the truth about the dire fiscal challenges Americans face at all levels of government, and daring to commit themselves to solutions that will liberate our economy and help put our citizens on a path to prosperity."

AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka, meanwhile, has called the plan an "assault" on the middle class and compared Walker's plan to drastic cuts House Republicans in Washington want to make.

"This federal budget madness echoes pound-foolish actions we're seeing in state after state, where Republican legislators and governors elected with lucrative CEO support are ignoring the jobs crisis and playing politics as usual with the lives of working families," he wrote in a Huffington Post op-ed......

What idiots like Trumka dont grasp is that the taxes required to pay these crazy maddoffian level benes for govt workers are destroying the middle class and sending jobs overseas.

Democrat Play Book 101 On Display In Wisconsin, Unions Take Control

Lots of news stories and blog posts about the teachers unions taking over the Wisconsin State Legislature yesterday and how the Democrats went into hiding to avoid what I suppose is their sworn duty. In reality they did not just hide, they fled the state.

This is right out of the Democrat’s playbook. If they win an election … they WON. Don’t you remember what President Obama said two years ago? When the legislative and executive branches were held by Democrats, the mantra was “we won, deal with it.”

After the elections last November, the tide turned. Republicans took control of the US House, and many state legislatures flipped too. The 2010 election in Wisconsin was a dramatic shift. Prior to the election, Democrats had a strong hold on both the State Senate and Assembly with 52 Democrats, 33 Republicans and three representing other parties. Republicans now hold 53 of the seats to the Democrat’s 33 -- a complete reversal.

AWOL Wisconsin Democrat calls CNN with list of demands
By Mary Katharine Ham - The Daily Caller
Updated: 4:31 PM 02/17/2011

State Senator Mark Miller, a member of the missing band of Wisconsin Democratic lawmakers who fled Madison Thursday to avoid a vote on a budget bill, called into CNN with the group’s list of demands for Republican Gov. Scott Walker.

Miller, a state senator since 2004, would not disclose where he and his colleagues were hiding out, saying only “we are in what we consider a secure location outside the capital. We are not all in one place at this time.”

Miller’s demands focused on the collective bargaining portions of the bill.

“We demand that the provisions that completely eliminate the ability of workers… to negotiate on a fair basis with their employers be removed from the budget repair bill and any other future budget,” Miller said.

He also demanded legislative oversight on changes to the state’s medical programs, which are targeted for changes in the bill. The bill would also require union members to contribute to their health care and pensions.

Miller and 13 other Democrats went missing Thursday morning when a vote on a budget-repair measure was imminent in the Republican-controlled Senate. It would have passed the Senate after getting out of committee on a party-line vote late last night, so Democrats left the building to stall a vote on the measure.

Wisconsin Democrats Reach Legend Status
jenkuznicki.com ^ | 2/18/11 | Jen Kuznicki

________________________ ____________________

When the Wisconsin Democrats left the floor of the Capitol on a short yellow bus and ended up in Illinois, they reached legend status. And not in a good way. From now on, whenever anyone runs away politically or a pundit tries to evade the issue at hand, they are going to be referred to as a Wisconsin Democrat.

On a serious note, a friend of mine, CJ, got a note from a fellow who was in Madison, and it kind of proves to me that what happened in Wisconsin was no small, spontaneous sequence of events.

"I was there on Tuesday and testified before the joint finance committee. Since then the Democratic Senators got on a bus and left the state, we are one short of a quorum to vote. Today the majority of the schools closed due to teachers calling in sick, the unions are busing people in from out-of-state, stairs are blocked, restrooms are a permanently occupied to prevent use by anybody, elevators full and kids are running through the halls pounding on doors and yelling. The capital police have the building completely in lock down for security reasons. No business can be conducted. Saul would be proud of their actions. It is like being a third world country, it is truly sad."

The man was referring to Saul Alinsky who wrote "Rules For Radicals."

So, besides the Wisconsin Democrat side show of running away and holing up in a Best Western in Illinois, we have this spectacle of absolute anarchy, and it was obviously orchestrated. The teachers of Wisconsin, at least a majority of them were complicit, somebody had to organize the children to be disruptive, somebody had to get a whole bunch of people to just hang around in the bathrooms all day, this is truly sick, and here's the problem. The American people will not stand for this. Just like the fellow said, it is sad, but it is also angering the American people.

I'm reminded of a friend of mine, a tea partier, who walked miles and miles to knock on doors last fall, and he came to a house, and after an initial greeting, my friend asked him if he was a Republican or a Democrat. The man got very animated, angry, and he said, "I'm a proud Democrat, and I'll tell ya, if they don't stop doing what their doing, I'm throwing the whole bunch of them out!"

Whoever orchestrated this crap in Wisconsin had better notice that you can't treat America like the streets of Chicago.

MADISON - According to the Wisconsin senate majority leader, the Governor's office is sending out state troopers to go after Wisconsin's Democratic Senate members to bring in a vote on Governor Walker's budget bill which would dramatically limit government workers union's ability to negotiate many of their benefits.

"They are prepared to dispatch state troopers to go out to some of the residences of some of the senators," said Republican State Senator Scott Fitzgerald on Newsradio 620 WTMJ's "Midday with Charlie Sykes."

"We don't know that everybody is out of state. These troopers are going to go and try to escort these senators back to the chamber."

The State Patrol cannot go after the Democratic senators who have left the state, and Democratic State Senator Jon Erpenbach told "Wisconsin's Morning News" that all 14 Democratic Senate members have fled Wisconsin and have not announced a timetable for their return.

**SNIP**

Fitzgerald said he was not sure if Assembly Democrats are showing up or want to caucus.

Apocalypse Now: Wisconsin vs. Big Labor; Plus: More out-of-state union recruiting & another teacher
michelle malkin ^ | 2/18/11 | michelle malkin

This is a critical moment in the nation’s battle to dig itself out of debt and free itself from the iron grip of public union monopolies. As you know from reading this blog, the Wisconsin showdown has been a long time coming. I remind you that there are many brave workers exposing the corruption and costs of compulsory unionism. Today’s syndicated column gives an overview of the Big Labor battle in Wisconsin — now spreading to Ohio and Indiana, where the DNC/OFA are organizing the community of grievance-mongers kicking and screaming against overdue reforms.

Like someone famous always says: Change is never easy.

Apocalypse Now: Wisconsin vs. Big Labor by Michelle Malkin Creators Syndicate Copyright 2011

Welcome to the reckoning. We have met the fiscal apocalypse, and it is smack dab in the middle of the heartland. As Wisconsin goes, so goes the nation. Let us pray it does not go the way of the decrepit welfare states of the European Union.

Obama rallies union base as budget standoff grips Wisconsin
TheHill ^ | 02/18/11 | Jordan Fabian and Kevin Bogardus

The president is firing up labor groups critical to his reelection with talk of an “assault on unions” in Wisconsin.

President Obama is sending a clear message to his allies in the labor movement as he gears up for his reelection campaign: I’ve got your back.

The president has waded into the bitter standoff in Wisconsin between Gov. Scott Walker (R) and public service unions, siding with protesters who say Walker’s plan to shore up his state’s budget with cuts to pensions and benefits is an “assault on unions.”

"Some of what I've heard coming out of Wisconsin, where you're just making it harder for public employees to collectively bargain, generally seems like more of an assault on unions," Obama told the Milwaukee television affiliate WTMJ. "And I think it's very important for us to understand that public employees, they're our neighbors, they're our friends."

Jesse Jackson rallies protesters at Wis. Capitol

Associated Press - February 18, 2011 1:55 PM ET

________________________ ________________________ ___

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - The Rev. Jesse Jackson has urged thousands of protesters in the Wisconsin Capitol to continue their stand against a sweeping anti-union bill that state Republicans are pushing.

Jackson made an unannounced appearance at the protests Friday afternoon. Protesters rushed to shake his hand or high-five him, and many shouted, "Thank you, Jesse."

Jackson told the protesters they were fighting for a just cause. He told them to hold strong to their principles and continue fighting to kill the bill. Then he led the masses in a rendition of "We Shall Overcome."

Gov. Scott Walker's bill would cut costs in part by eliminating collective-bargaining rights.

Jackson likened the protest to anti-government fights in Egypt and Tunisia. He says Wisconsin workers should be allowed at the table to help find a solution.

I would tell these people very simply:

"Show up to work tommorow or you fired.   And if you don't like it - go make more money in the private sector where you think things are so great.  BTW - there are 1,000,000 people who will flock to our state to take your jobs.   Make your choice."

Poll: Public unions a hard sell (64% of Americans oppose public-sector unions)
Politico ^ | 2/18/2011 | Ben Smith

A new poll from the Washington-based Clarus Group asked:

Do you think government employees should be represented by labor unions that bargain for higher pay, benefits and pensions ... or do you think government employees should not be represented by labor unions?

A full 64% of the respondents said "no."

That includes 42% of Democrats, and an overwhelming majority of Republicans. Only 49% of Democrats think public workers should be in unions at all.

That's on the fundamental right to organize, before you get to wages and benefits. And that puts Scott Walker in a pretty good political place.

(According to the release, this was a national survey of 1,001 registered voters. One note: Clarus is a division of the global corporate public relations giant Qorvis, not exactly a labor bastion.)

25,000?

Damn - thats freaking huge.

What part of "broke" do these people not get?

Also - i work for myself, and believe, when i tally u what they people get in terms of job security, pensions, benes, and all that is breing asked is that they pay 7% - damn - thy need to STFU!

7% ?  That must be a typo!  Here, it's 70% :o   The average salary and benefit package, including pension, etc. for a Milwaukee Public School teacher is $100,005!!!  You're damn right they don't get it!  They're whining because "they're going to take away our collective bargaining agreement" whine "we'll have to contribute 7% to our overly-inflated pension fund" whine  "we have to contribute to our health care plan (like everyone else)" whine.  "this is going to put a lot of us in bankruptcy"  boofvckinghoo  Welcome to the party pal!  >:(  They're saying "we'd be willing to negotiate, but you're taking that away from us" Right  ::)  That's why it took 15 months to negotiate your last contract!  We don't have 15 months!  We're in a $3.6 billiondollar deficit!  This proposal ensures no layoffs, no furloughs, etc., unlike the last reign.

Meanwhile, school districts across the state have been having to close because of all the teachers calling in sick.  BUT!  It's all in the name of the children  >:( >:( >:(

I love this Wall Street Journal editorial.  Sums it up quite well.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704657704576150111817428004.html?mod=WSJ_Opinion_LEADTop

For Americans who don't think the welfare state riots of France or Greece can happen here, we recommend a look at the union and Democratic Party spectacle now unfolding in Wisconsin. Over the past few days, thousands have swarmed the state capital and airwaves to intimidate lawmakers and disrupt Governor Scott Walker's plan to level the playing field between taxpayers and government unions.

Mr. Walker's very modest proposal would take away the ability of most government employees to collectively bargain for benefits. They could still bargain for higher wages, but future wage increases would be capped at the federal Consumer Price Index, unless otherwise specified by a voter referendum. The bill would also require union members to contribute 5.8% of salary toward their pensions and chip in 12.6% of the cost of their health insurance premiums.

If those numbers don't sound outrageous, you probably work in the private economy. The comparable nationwide employee health-care contribution is 20% for private industry, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The average employee contribution from take-home pay for retirement was 7.5% in 2009, according to the Employee Benefits Research Institute.

Mr. Walker says he has no choice but to make these changes because unions refuse to negotiate any compensation changes, which is similar to the experience Chris Christie had upon taking office in New Jersey. Wisconsin is running a $137 million deficit this year and anticipates coming up another $3.6 billion short in the next two-year budget. Governor Walker's office estimates the proposals would save the state $300 million over the next two years, and the alternative would be to lay off 5,500 public employees.

None of this is deterring the crowds in Madison, aka Mad Town, where protesters, including many from the 98,000-member teachers union, have gone Greek. Madison's school district had to close Thursday when 40% of its teachers called in sick. So much for the claim that this is "all about the children." By the way, these are some of the same teachers who sued the Milwaukee school board last August to get Viagra coverage restored to their health-care plan.

The protests have an orchestrated quality, and sure enough, the Politico website reported yesterday that the Democratic Party's Organizing for America arm is helping to gin them up. The outfit is a remnant of President Obama's 2008 election campaign, so it's also no surprise that Mr. Obama said yesterday that while he knows nothing about the bill, he supports protesters occupying the Capitol building.

"These folks are teachers, and they're firefighters and they're social workers and they're police officers," he said, "and it's important not to vilify them." Mr. Obama is right that he knows nothing about the bill because it explicitly excludes police and firefighters. We'd have thought the President had enough to think about with his own $1.65 trillion deficit proposal going down with a thud in Congress, but it appears that the 2012 campaign is already underway.

The unions and their Democratic friends have also been rolling out their Hitler, Soviet Union and Hosni Mubarak analogies. "The story around the world is the rush to democracy," offered Democratic State Senator Bob Jauch. "The story in Wisconsin is the end of the democratic process."

The reality is that the unions are trying to trump the will of the voters as overwhelmingly rendered in November when they elected Mr. Walker and a new legislature.
As with the strikes against pension or labor reforms that routinely shut down Paris or Athens, the goal is to create enough mayhem that Republicans and voters will give up.

While Republicans now have the votes to pass the bill, on Thursday Big Labor's Democratic allies walked out of the state senate to block a vote. Under state rules, 20 members of the 33-member senate must be present to hold a vote on an appropriations bill, leaving the 19 Republicans one member short. By the end of the day some Democrats were reported to have fled the state. So who's really trying to short-circuit democracy?

Unions are treating these reforms as Armageddon because they've owned the Wisconsin legislature for years and the changes would reduce their dominance. Under Governor Walker's proposal, the government also would no longer collect union dues from paychecks and then send that money to the unions. Instead, unions would be responsible for their own collection regimes. The bill would also require unions to be recertified annually by a majority of all members. Imagine that: More accountability inside unions.

The larger reality is that collective bargaining for government workers is not a God-given or constitutional right. It is the result of the growing union dominance inside the Democratic Party during the middle of the last century. John Kennedy only granted it to federal workers in 1962 and Jerry Brown to California workers in 1978. Other states, including Indiana and Missouri, have taken away collective bargaining rights for public employees in recent years, and some 24 states have either limited it or banned it outright.

And for good reason. Public unions have a monopoly position that gives them undue bargaining power. Their campaign cash—collected via mandatory dues—also helps to elect the politicians who are then supposed to represent taxpayers in negotiations with those same unions. The unions sit, in effect, on both sides of the bargaining table. This is why such famous political friends of the working man as Franklin Roosevelt and Fiorello La Guardia opposed collective bargaining for government workers, even as they championed private unions.
***

The battle of Mad Town is a seminal showdown over whether government union power can be tamed, and overall government reined in. The alternative is higher taxes until the middle class is picked clean and the U.S. economy is no longer competitive. Voters said in November that they want reform, and Mr. Walker is trying to deliver. We hope Republicans hold firm, and that the people of Wisconsin understand that this battle is ultimately about their right to self-government.

But for Palin to call a 25 year old teacher (or whatever field) a term like UNAMERICAN for practicing their right to protest?  I guess it's only american when she agrees with them, like at back's rally, etc?

As for the FEDERAL govt shutting down,  yes I am in favor of that since it would stop the nation from continuing to accumulate such draconian levels of debt and deficit.  On the state level, most of the homeowners and taxpayers fundin these leeches have already paid their property taxes and should get what they have pre-paid for.

I assume you derive some portion of your income from real estate transaction so you won't complain if Fannie, Freddie, FHA are shut down and it effects your income and makes the economy even worse.   If I recall correctly you were actually in favor of letting the economy get much worse so maybe you'll get a chance to see that happen

then I guess you'd have no personal issue if virtually every real estate transaction in the country was put on hold

I mean, even if it had a huge negative effect on the economy and people from different economic classes that would still be a good thing right?

Agree.  My beef with obama is he and geithner allowed the bailouts to score record profits off the back of taxpayers.  Those bank bailouts should of had some HARD stipulations attached!!!

Wisconsin Democrats Keep on the Move (Governor may cut funding for AWOL Senators' staff)
wall street journal ^ | 2/19/2011 | DOUGLAS BELKIN And KRIS MAHER

________________________ _--

State Democratic senators, holed up in out-of-state hotels, gave no timetable for a return to the capital, putting on hold a fiscal bill that would limit collective-bargaining rights for most state workers.

"When we go back is ultimately up to the governor's willingness to sit down and talk about this and come up with some sort of resolution," said Sen. Jon Erpenbach, who fled with 13 colleagues on Thursday to deprive Republicans of the needed quorum to pass the measure. He spoke by phone from a Chicago hotel, where he planned to stay Friday night.

But Republicans, surrounded by thousands of raucous protesters singing and chanting on the Capitol grounds, offered little hope of compromise.

"The protesters have every right to have their voices heard, but I'm not going to be intimidated into thinking I should ignore the voices of the five-and-a-half million taxpayers," said Republican Gov. Scott Walker.

................

With no end to the standoff in sight, Mr. Walker said that if the Democratic senators don't return, he would consider cutting the funding that pays for their staff.

FDR's Ghost Is Smiling on Wisconsin's Governor
By Patrick McIlheran

Somewhere, Franklin Delano Roosevelt is grinning past his cigarette holder at Wisconsin's governor. They are on the same page regarding government unions.

Except that Scott Walker -- Republican cheapskate, his visage Hitlerized on signs waved by beet-faced union crowds besieging the Capitol -- is kind of a liberal squish compared to FDR. He's OK with some collective bargaining.

Walker, you might have heard, wants some changes in how Wisconsin deals with unions. He wants state employees to pay 5.8% of their salaries toward their pensions (they pay almost nothing now) and he wants them to cover 12.6% of their health care premiums (their share would go up from $79 a month to about $200; the average private-sector sap pays about $330).

Unions are enraged. They've been calling such increases unspeakable since Walker was elected handily in November. Then, Feb. 10, Walker went further. He'd allow public-sector unions to negotiate only pay, not benefits, mainly because he wants HSA-style health plans and 401(k)-style retirements for state workers, and unions would fight that, tooth and ragged red claw.

So unions erupted. Teachers faked illness in such numbers as to close school districts for days. Mobs beat on the doors of legislative chambers. And in some heavenly Hyde Park, the great liberal god of the 1930s is saying he saw it all along.

Roosevelt's reign certainly was the bright dawn of modern unionism. The legal and administrative paths that led to 35% of the nation's workforce eventually unionizing by a mid-1950s peak were laid by Roosevelt.

But only for the private sector. Roosevelt openly opposed bargaining rights for government unions.

"The process of collective bargaining, as usually understood, cannot be transplanted into the public service," Roosevelt wrote in 1937 to the National Federation of Federal Employees. Yes, public workers may demand fair treatment, wrote Roosevelt. But, he wrote, "I want to emphasize my conviction that militant tactics have no place" in the public sector. "A strike of public employees manifests nothing less than an intent on their part to prevent or obstruct the operations of Government."

And if you're the kind of guy who capitalizes "government," woe betide such obstructionists.

Roosevelt wasn't alone. It was orthodoxy among Democrats through the '50s that unions didn't belong in government work. Things began changing when, in 1959, Wisconsin's then-Gov. Gaylord Nelson signed collective bargaining into law for state workers. Other states followed, and gradually, municipal workers and teachers were unionized, too.

Even as that happened, the future was visible. Frank Zeidler, Milwaukee's mayor in the 1950s and the last card-carrying Socialist to head a major U.S. city, supported labor. But in 1969, the progressive icon wrote that rise of unions in government work put a competing power in charge of public business next to elected officials. Government unions "can mean considerable loss of control over the budget, and hence over tax rates," he warned.

There was "a revolutionary principle rather quietly at work in American government," he wrote.

The principle was working at about 100 decibels in Wisconsin's Capitol last week, once the union drum-beaters got going. What worked them up was the money they'd concede, they said, but even more that Walker would make their unions surrender the control they'd gained over every government budget.

Walker, like other Republicans, was long accused of hating government. For eight years as chief executive of heavily Democrat Milwaukee County, he would not raise taxes, which opponents said showed his contempt for government.

Yet all this past week, he praised public employees and he said the work government does is so necessary, taxpayers should get as much of it for their money as possible. Meanwhile, thousands of schoolteachers on the Capitol lawn manifested their intent to obstruct Government and their belief that the tots back at Roosevelt Elementary could darn well spend a day or three watching Nickelodeon at home.

And, to beat all, the president who now professes to be the new Reagan weighed in to say Walker was being unduly mean to unions. President Obama gave no audible word on whether unions were being unduly mean in shutting down schools.

Walker, good Republican, is no FDR but he is offering Wisconsin a new deal, lower-case. Wisconsin's been a seedbed of bad ideas since it hatched Progressivism, and for years it's stuck with unionized government even as the price swelled. Walker's radical shift is to try securing necessary government at a better price. The unions, whose model depends on making government labor as costly as taxpayers will bear, object.

May they be haunted by the ghost of the 32nd president, and his little dog, too.

These public sector unions better jump at these deals where there are no layoffs in return for a little giveback or the ax will really swing and thousands will be let go as the states are mostly under constituional mandate to balance their books.

Fake Doctors’ Notes Being Handed Out at Wisconsin Gov. Union Rally
MacIver News Service ^ | 2/19/11

[Madison, WI] As tens of thousands of public employees skipped work this week to attend protest rallies outside the Wisconsin State Capitol, many wondered if they would face any disciplinary action for unexcused absences.

On Saturday, a group of men and women in lab coats purporting to be doctors were handing out medical excuse notes, without examining the ‘patients.’

“I asked this doctor what he was doing and he told me they were handing out excuses to people who were feeling sick due to emotional, mental or financial distress,” said Christian Hartsock. “They never performed an exam–he asked me how I was feeling today and I said I’m from California and I’m not used to the cold, so he handed me a note.”

Another woman, who wished to remain anonymous, said they were handing out excuses like they were leaflets.

“I asked if they were handing out doctors’ excuses and a guy said yes and asked me if I needed one,” she said. “When I told them I needed one for February 16 and 17th, he wondered if I wanted to come back here for the protests next week.”

What happened next?

“I said, ‘sure,’ and I received a doctor’s note for the 16th through the 25th of February, without a medical exam.”

The notes read

Feb 19, 2011

Patient’s name______

Date of birth ____/_____/_____

To Whom it May Concern:

This is confirm I have seen and evaluated the above named patient.

Please excuse from work/school due to a medical condition from

Please contact me at badgerdoctors@gmail.com if additional information is needed. Thank you.

WI license number

Based on an examination of the signature and medical license number provided, one of the men handing out these notes was purporting to be James H Shropshire MD, a Clinical Associate Professor at the University Wisconsin Madison.

At this time, MacIver News Service is attempting to contact Dr. Shropshire to see if indeed he was the one handing out the notes on the Capitol Square.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi came out strongly in support of Wisconsin teachers and students who are protesting Gov. Scott Walker’s proposal to public employees of collective bargaining rights.

Pelosi told reporters Friday that the protests are “an extraordinary show of democracy in action.”

“Wisconsin's workers, teachers and public servants must have a seat at the table to fight for a safe workplace,” she said. “I stand in solidarity with the Wisconsin workers fighting for their rights, especially for all the students and young people leading the charge.”

Wisconsin senators' absence raises questions on tactic ('setting themselves up for a BIG failure')

Wisconsin senators' absence raises questions on tactic
By Eric Johnson – 17 mins ago

CHICAGO (Reuters) – As demonstrators wrangled on Saturday over Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker's move to weaken public unions, analysts weighed the consequences of 14 Democratic senators' decision to flee the state to stall the bill's consideration.

**SNIP**

"As far as the constitution goes, there is nothing that expressly forbids their actions," Copelovitch said. "But if the same thing that is happening in Wisconsin spreads to other states, there should be explicit rules written to forbid it."

Senator Jon Erpenbach said Friday that the senators were prepared to be away for weeks, and Assembly Minority Leader Peter Barca said he didn't know when they would return.

"Sooner or later all 14 will have to return--they are away from their states, homes, and businesses," said Sabato, adding that a vote is inevitable and the mathematics is not on the side of the Democrats.

"The upside is that they have brought a lot of attention to their point of view. The downside is they are setting themselves up for a big failure in public relations at some point," Sabato said.

Largest protest yet fails to sway Wis. lawmakers
AP – Tom Braun and Nathaniel Raghez, both of Milwaukee, debate opposite sides of Wisconsin's proposed budget …

MADISON, Wis. – Sometimes they cursed each other, sometimes they shook hands, sometimes they walked away from each other in disgust.

None of it — not the ear-splitting chants, the pounding drums or the back-and-forth debate between 70,000 protesters — changed the minds of Wisconsin lawmakers dug into a stalemate over Republican efforts to scrap union rights for almost all public workers.

"The people who are not around the Capitol square are with us," said Rep. Robin Vos, a Republican from Rochester and co-chair of the Legislature's budget committee. "They may have a bunch around the square, but we've got the rest on our side."

After nearly a week of political chaos in Madison, during which tens of thousands of pro-labor protesters turned the Capitol into a campsite that had started to smell like a locker room, supporters of Gov. Scott Walker came out in force Saturday.

They gathered on the muddy east lawn of the Capitol and were soon surrounded by a much larger group of union supporters who countered their chants of "Pass the bill! Pass the bill!" with chants of "Kill the bill! Kill the bill!"

"Go home!" union supporters yelled at Scott Lemke, a 46-year-old machine parts salesman from Cedarburg who wore a hard hat and carried a sign that read "If you don't like it, quit" on one side, and "If you don't like that, try you're fired" on the other.

A lone demonstrator stood between the crowds, saying nothing and holding a sign: "I'm praying that we can all respect each other. Let's try to understand each other."

The Wisconsin governor, elected in November's GOP wave that also gave control of the state Assembly and Senate to Republicans, set off the protests earlier this week by pushing ahead with a measure that would require government workers to contribute more to their health care and pension costs and largely eliminate their collective bargaining rights.

Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald, R-Juneau, said the crowds that have gotten bigger each day have yet to win over any member of his caucus.

"What they're getting from individuals back home is stick to your guns, don't let them get to you," Fitzgerald said. "Every senator I've spoken to today is getting that back home, which is awesome. It's great to hear from people who are part of a rally ... (but) two people you meet at a fish fry or a person who comes up to you at a basketball game, those comments sink in."

Fitzgerald and other Republicans say the concessions are needed to deal with the state's projected $3.6 billion budget shortfall and to avoid layoffs of government workers. The move to restrict union rights has also taken hold in other states, including Tennessee and Indiana, where lawmakers have advanced bills to restrict bargaining for teachers' unions.

The throngs of Walker supporters who arrived in Madison on Saturday for an afternoon rally organized by Tea Party Patriots, the movement's largest umbrella group, and Americans for Prosperity, carried signs with a fresh set of messages: "Your Gravy Train Is Over ... Welcome to the Recession" and "Sorry, we're late Scott. We work for a living."

"We pay the bills!" tea party favorite Herman Cain yelled to cheers from the pro-Walker crowd. "This is why you elected Scott Walker, and he's doing his job. ... Wisconsin is broke. My question for the other side is, `What part of broke don't you understand?'"

Democrats in the Wisconsin Senate, short of the votes needed to keep Republicans from passing the so-called "budget repair" bill, fled the state on Thursday. They haven't been seen since, and said Saturday they are more resolved than ever to stay away "as long as it takes" until Walker agrees to negotiate.

"I don't think he's really thought it through, to be honest," Democratic Sen. Jon Erpenbach, of Middleton, said Saturday.

Democrats offered again Saturday to agree to the parts of Walker's proposal, so long as workers retain their right to negotiate with the state as a union.

Fitzgerald said that's an offer the GOP has rejected for months. The restrictions on collective bargaining rights are necessary so that local governments and the state have the flexibility needed to balance budgets after cuts Walker plans to announce next month, he said.

Walker, who was spending time with his family Saturday and didn't appear in public, also rejected the Democrats offer. His spokesman, Cullen Werwie, said the fastest way to end the stalemate was for Democrats to return and "do their jobs."

Madison police estimated that 60,000 or more people were outside the Capitol on Saturday, with up to 8,000 more inside. The normally an immaculate building had become a mess of mud-coated floors that reeked from days of protesters standing shoulder-to-shoulder.

Police spokesman Joel DeSpain said there were no arrests or problems during Saturday's protests. "We've seen and shown the world that in Madison, Wis., we can bring people together who disagree strongly on a bill in a peaceful way," he said.

Steve Boss, 26, a refrigerator technician from Oostburg, carried a sign that read "The Protesters Are All `Sick' -- Wash your Hands," a reference to the teacher sick-outs that swelled crowds at the Capitol to 40,000 people Friday and raised the noise in its rotunda to earsplitting levels. Boss said the cuts Walker has proposed were painful but needed to fix the state's financial problems.

"It's time to address the issue. They (public workers) got to take the same cuts as everyone else," he said. "It's a fairness thing."

Doctors from numerous hospitals set up a station near the Capitol to provide notes to explain public employees' absences from work. Family physician Lou Sanner, 59, of Madison, said he had given out hundreds of notes. Many of the people he spoke with seemed to be suffering from stress, he said.

"What employers have a right to know is if the patient was assessed by a duly licensed physician about time off of work," Sanner said. "Employers don't have a right to know the nature of that conversation or the nature of that illness. So it's as valid as every other work note that I've written for the last 30 years."

John Black, 46, of Madison, said he came out to the rallies in order to help bridge the gap between the pro-labor protesters and Walker's supporters. He carried signs that asked for a compromise on the budget bill while a friend's son handed out purple flowers.

"We liked Scott Walker as a change agent, but he moved too quickly and because of that there's always room for compromise," Black said.

1.  Fire every teacher who uses a fraudulent note.

2.  Every MD who issued one of these fraudulent letters needs to have his license suspended or be called to account.

3.  Andrew Breitbart again punked the communist left.

4.  These public unions have no idea how good they have it relative to the private sector.

5.  Jesse Jacksons' appearance was great for the governor and doomed the protesters.

6.  This is coming across the nation and these public unions better get on board quick or risk losing everything.

I normally dont listen to Sean Hannity because his conservatism isnt quite tempered enough for me, he goes along with the conservative herd mentality a little too much. But he said something that rang true on Friday. He says that he would love for teachers to make $200000 a year if they could. But that just isnt the world that we live in. Its always been common knowledge that these types of jobs are the places where you dont expect to make a lot of money. In fact, a lot of these people go into these types of jobs not expecting to be doing it thier whole life.

I'm sorry, but I disagree with him. Most teachers are morons. I say this having grown up around them (my mother was a public school teacher and principal in NYC) and because throughout my life I have been in contact with them constantly. There are exceptions; but by and large most of them are barely more intelligent than the students they teach and some are twice as lazy. You know why the unions are scared shitless over classroom performance being a measurement of firing/ hiring, salaries and pensions? Because the lazy slobs in their ranks will be forced to justify why they should keep their jobs. Parents of course are to blame as well (especially in minority communities excluding Asians), but at the end of the day, teaching isn't the same thing as collecting garbage or counting out exact change at a toll booth. Having a masters degree and being given the responsibility to shape the young minds of America is a challenging but simeltaneously rewarding job (if it is your calling in life and you have the work ethic and talent). The problem is, these fucks in the UFT think teaching is the same thing as unskilled labor. It's not. These leeches need to be reminded of that.

Pelosi: I'm Proud of Wisconsin Dems Who Fled
Saturday, 19 Feb 2011 12:09 PM

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi says she's proud of the Democratic state senators in Wisconsin who high-tailed it over the border rather than stay in Madison to face a vote that's extremely unpopular with public-sector employees, The Hill reports.

More than a dozen Democratic lawmakers left the state Thursday before the Senate could vote on a bill that would slash the pay, benefits and collective bargaining rights for unionized public employees.

“I saw some of them speak on TV, and they were very proud of the action that they took. I’m very proud of what they are doing,” Pelosi said. “They’re standing up for the rights of America's workingmen and -women to have a voice at the table about their jobs and their futures. So yes, I support them.”

BREAKING NEWS: Packers Captain Charles Woodson Stands With Wisconsin's Workers

Already multiple members of the Super Bowl winning Green Bay Packers have taken public stands against the frightening, dictatorial, anti-union rampage of Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker. These pro athletes have chosen to link arms with the tens of thousands of nurses, teachers, and firefighters standing as one against Governor Walker's efforts to destroy their unions and drive them into poverty. It's been remarkable to see a steady stream of players from the only non-profit, fan owned team in American sports, lend their voice to this fight.
Yet none of the Packers who've spoken out, have had the profile, respect, or cultural currency of the latest member of the team to stand strong with Wisconsin's working families: Charles Woodson. Woodson is the team's defensive icon. A former Heisman trophy winner at the University of Michigan, NFL defensive player of the year, and perennial pro-bowler, his voice will evoke cheers at the capital and shockwaves in the Governor's office. The team's defensive captain is also the acknowledged emotion leader of the team, charged with pumping them up at halftime and making speeches after the game. He was the person who said during the playoffs, "The President doesn't want to watch us in the Super Bowl? We'll go see him! Say White House on three!" This much watched youtube moment, certainly takes on a different meaning right now.
By the way, Charles Woodson is also one of the team's union reps. Without further preamble, here is his statement announcing his stand with Wisconsin's working families. (Aaron Rodgers? You're on deck.)

STATEMENT FROM GREEN BAY PACKER CHARLES WOODSON IN SUPPORT OF WORKING FAMILIES IN WISCONSIN
Last week I was proud when many of my current and former teammates announced their support for the working families fighting for their rights in Wisconsin. Today I am honored to join with them. Thousands of dedicated Wisconsin public workers provide vital services for Wisconsin citizens. They are the teachers, nurses and child care workers who take care of us and our families. These hard working people are under an unprecedented attack to take away their basic rights to have a voice and collectively bargain at work.
It is an honor for me to play for the Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers and be a part of the Green Bay and Wisconsin communities. I am also honored as a member of the NFL Players Association to stand together with working families of Wisconsin and organized labor in their fight against this attempt to hurt them by targeting unions. I hope those leading the attack will sit down with Wisconsin's public workers and discuss the problems Wisconsin faces, so that together they can truly move Wisconsin forward.
Charles Woodson, Green Bay Packer cornerback and one of the team's elected representatives to the players union.

They don't grasp it because they don't care. They couldn't give a fuck about the economic straits this country is in as long as they're getting their obscene salaries and benefits.

Madison Schools will be Closed Again Monday (Defy orders of State Union President)
wuwm ^ | 2/20/2011 | ann elise-henzel

http://www.wuwm.com/programs/news/view_news.php?articleid=7859

Madison public schools will be closed Monday for the fourth straight day, amid major demonstrations at the Capitol.

So many teachers have called in sick in recent days, to protest GOP Gov. Scott Walker's controversial budget repair bill, that Madison schoolchildren were told to stay home last Wednesday through Friday.

Numerous districts around the state, including the state's largest, the Milwaukee Public Schools, also were closed at various points last week.

Teachers, other public employees, and their supporters are outraged by the measure in Walker's bill, which would strip public workers of most of their collective bargaining rights. They call it an attack on unions.

Walker insists the move is needed to help balance the state's budget.

The closure of Madison schools Monday comes despite a call Sunday by the statewide teachers' union, the Wisconsin Education Association Council, for teachers to report to classrooms.

Union demonstrators given protest training
Chicago Tribune ^ | Feb. 19, 2011 | Staff

MADISON, Wis. — Some demonstrators against Gov. Scott Walker's budget bill curtailing state workers' union bargaining rights have been trained to peacefully respond to counter-protests at the state Capitol.

Chris Terrell of Madison says protesters spending the night inside the Capitol rotunda were instructed by union members in advance of the arrival of Tea Party activists. Terrell says demonstrators were taught how to remain calm during confrontations and respond to Tea Party activists with specific talking points.

Docs who handed out excuse notes surprised by response

Doctors who wrote medical notes over the weekend excusing protesters at the Wisconsin Capitol from work are getting slammed with angry phone calls and profane e-mails from people telling them they deserve to be thrown in jail, one doctor said Sunday.

The physicians wore lab coats Saturday as they stood on a street corner and offered medical notes to the tens of thousands of protesters who paraded past them. The protesters were rallying against a Republican-backed state bill that would eliminate collective bargaining rights for most state workers.

One of the doctors was Lou Sanner, 59, who practices family medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. Sanner said he gave out hundreds of notes and that many protesters with whom he spoke seemed to be suffering from stress.

"Some people think it's a nod-and-a-wink thing but it's not," he told The Associated Press on Sunday. "One of the biggest stresses in life is the threat of loss of income, loss of job, loss of health insurance. People have actually been getting ill from this, or they can't sleep."

Many of the protesters who chanted for lawmakers to "kill the bill" at the protests were teachers who missed classroom time during the week to attend the rallies. In some districts, teacher absences were so widespread that entire schools were shut down for as many as three days.

Protesting "Sick" Teachers Could Cost Wisc. Schools $3,000,000 per Day
Pundit Press ^ | 2/21/11 | Aurelius

Teachers in Madison, Wisconsin protesting the agenda of Governor Scott Walker will not only miss days of school, but they will also cost the state of Wisconsin up to one million dollars a day.

A brief explanation: When teachers call in sick in Wisconsin, they still get paid. So, even though the vast majority of teachers who called in sick last week were only doing so to protest, they still got their wages. According to the Madison Metropolitan School District administration, this is costing the state a tremendous amount of money.

Over $900,000 a day, to be precise.

And because these protests are going on day after day, and because many teachers have no compunction about lying to children's faces, the amount grows...

It must also be pointed out that the $900,000 figure is only in the Madison school district. State-wide, the amount could be substantially more. In other words, this will make Wisconsin's financial situation worse, while Wisconsin children are losing days of education. If all the teachers in Madison and Milwaukee alone call in sick, daily expenses for "sick days" exceeds $3,000,000.

Still, tossing around that phrase 'unamerican'....

They can be wrong.  They can be morons... they can be lazy fvcksticks... but to say they are unamerican is pretty tough landguage... i haven't seen the word "unamerican" used to describe serial killers, rapists, etc... but a teacher who is pissed suddenly HATES AMERICA?

Sorry, I can't agree with that.  Call them bags of shit, I have no problem with that.  But the moment "anyone who protests over XYZ hates America" is accepted, it's a slippery slope.

Can I call them thieves, fraudulent hacks, cry babies, and pieces of shit?

Absolutely, 1000%.   From their point of view, the teachers are not willing to give up their collective bargaining rights (forever)... I can't blame them there... and they don't wanna take a pay cut.  THEIR motive is, I'm losing power, control, and a shitload of $ each year.

Okay, so sure they can be pissed.  Should they be striking?  No, but this is America and it's not like they're shutting down airlines or the army.  They're shutting down schools.  And if the governor wants to fire their silly asses, so be it.  They know the law, and if they're breaking their contract, dump em.  I'm a-okay with that!

But for any politician to say "if you strike, you hate america'..... well, that's dangerous.  Why not just come right out and call them communists?  The teachers have a right to be pissed, but they're not handling it correctly.  Fire them if you feel the need.  But that kind of wording, reminds me of some sad times in our history where people were on communist lists, etc.

From Cairo to Madison, some pizza
By: Meredith Shiner
February 20, 2011 04:05 PM EST

MADISON, Wis. — Someone in Egypt has been paying attention to what’s happening in Madison and wanted to send a message of solidarity from across the globe — so they ordered a pizza.

It might seem like a small gesture, but it’s overwhelming to the staff at Ian’s on State Street — a campus staple mere blocks from the Capitol — where in the last few days, they’ve fielded calls from concerned citizens of 12 countries, and 38 out of 50 states looking to donate money to provide free pizza to the Wisconsinites who have congregated here.

On Saturday alone, Ian’s gave away 1,057 free slices in their store and delivered more than 300 pizzas to the Capitol itself.

By 2 p.m. local time Sunday, they’d given away 351 slices and sent countless other full pies to the rotunda, where protesters have been gathering since well before noon. As a few locals stood waiting for their slices, an Ian’s staffer went to the chalkboard hanging behind the register and wrote, “Turkey” in big block letters and co-workers expressed a sense of disbelief.

“I don’t think we started it,” said Ryan O’Connor, a sophomore at a local technical school who works the register at Ian’s. “We made a post to our Facebook page because of the volume of calls we already had been getting unprompted.”

O’Connor said Ian’s got its first call Thursday when a mother of a University of Wisconsin student called and offered to donate $200 to help feed the people her daughter told her had flooded the Capitol. Since then, the outpouring of money from all over the world has put the pizza-makers into overdrive.

The blackboard behind the counter lists the “countries donating” as “Korea, Finland, Egypt, Denmark, Australia, US, Canada, Germany, China, London, Netherlands, Turkey” and has the abbreviations for all 50 states listed below, with donating states circled. As of Sunday afternoon, 38 states had been marked as contributors.

The small pizza chain with locations in Madison and Chicago has been using Facebook and Twitter to take what started as one phone call and make it into an international movement. Saturday night, the State Street location was so overwhelmed by orders it had to cease its delivery operations. But employees still are finding time to update the restaurant’s social media pages to keep the pizza revolution going and share with the world their chalkboard progress.

“This is astounding!” Ian’s posted Saturday to twitter.

Protesters in Wisconsin Say They Are Staying Put
nytimes ^ | February 20, 2011 | Andy Manis

________________________ ______

Union leaders urged Wisconsin teachers to return to work at schools that are open on Monday, but large protests were expected to continue at the Capitol against a plan to cut collective bargaining rights and benefits to state workers.

“We’ll be here Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday — as long as it takes,” Gary Lonzo, a union organizer and former Wisconsin corrections officer, said Sunday as he watched protesters banging drums and waving signs here for a sixth day in a row. “We’re not going anywhere.”

As the protests went on through falling sleet and snow, some lawmakers suggested that a compromise might yet be possible over the cuts that Gov. Scott Walker, a Republican, has proposed. A spokesman for Dale Schultz, a moderate Republican senator, said that Mr. Schultz supported Mr. Walker, particularly in his assessment that the state budget situation was dire, but that Mr. Schultz also hoped to work to preserve collective bargaining rights.

Medical Fraud in Madison
Big Government dot com ^ | 2-19-11 | Dr. David Janda

________________________ _________________

What is occurring in Madison, Wisconsin has become a microcosm of what is happening across America: conservative care givers are being blocked by progressive liberal statists. In Wisconsin, the elected Governor and conservative legislature are trying to institute rational, humane treatment to a sick patient, the state of Wisconsin’s failed economy. Unfortunately, progressive liberal statists and unions, as self-appointed “family members” of the patient, have decided to withhold treatment by NOT allowing the caregivers in the room and by trying to hide the patient in another state.

The progressive liberal statists and unions have taken the situation to a fraudulent and possibly criminal level, with the help of The Democratic National Committee, Organizing For America and their mouthpiece the “Organizer in Chief:” Barack Obama. They have recruited “physicians” in their white coats to hand out FRAUDULENT work notes to the “victims” of the needed treatment. These “physicians” in white coats were eerily similar in appearance to the “physicians” in white coats who slithered into the Rose Garden during the debate on Obama Care. In their actions, these “physicians” have violated and compromised The Hippocratic Oath, medical ethics and committed medical fraud.

The video of Andrew Breitbart shows him being “diagnosed” with “Walker Pneumonia” and being given a “medical release” from work. This is all the evidence needed to bring those “physicians” up on charges of FRAUD before the State of Wisconsin Medical Review Board, The State of Wisconsin Medical Society and The Wisconsin Attorney General’s Office. What these “physicians” have done is incomprehensible to those of us that uphold the Oath 24-7 year in and year out.

Thirty years ago, I stood with my 150 classmates in Thorn Hall, at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, as Dean James Eckenhoff asked us to raise our right hands and repeat after him:

I will apply measures for the benefit of the sick according to my ability and judgment; I will keep them from harm and injustice.

I will neither give a deadly drug to anybody if asked for it, nor will I make a suggestion to this effect. In purity and holiness I will guard my life and my art.

I will not use the knife, not even on sufferers from stone, but will withdraw in favor of such men as are engaged in this work.

Whatever houses I may visit, I will come for the benefit of the sick, remaining free of all intentional injustice.

Those words, from The Hippocratic Oath written in 400 B.C., changed my life and the lives of the hundreds of thousands of patients my classmates and I have touched over the past thirty years. I keep this Oath as my foundation as a practicing physician, clinical researcher and health care policy analyst. Unfortunately, the actions taken by those “physicians” in Madison wearing white coats and handing out FRAUDULENT “medical releases” harms ALL of us trying to uphold that sacred Oath.

Based on what I have seen from the progressive liberal statists, I would not be surprised if their next “stunt” will be to bring out the medical icon of the left for an appearance in Madison: Dr. Death himself, Jack Kevorkian. The problem is, we cannot sit by silently and watch Wisconsin self-administer this lethal injection, instead of swallowing the bitter, but life-saving medicine it so needs.

This is a country of free speech, and all are welcomed to the discussion. All sides need to be heard – legally and peacefully. Let’s not lose sight of truth and reality in that discussion. Yes, the needed medicine can be bitter, and can have difficult side effects. However, if we refuse to face the necessary steps, the patient, Wisconsin and our Country, will continue its downslide. The State will be bankrupt and there will be nothing there to pay any union benefits – or anything else. The heart and lungs of this patient will falter, and there will be nothing left to sustain that left hand flailing in the wind.

Protesting Teachers Could Reap $6 Million from Taxpayers to Attend Rallies
MacIver News Service ^ | 2/21/2011 | MacIver News Service

________________________ ________

[Madison, Wisc...] As Milwaukee Public School teachers left their classrooms to march in Madison Friday, they likely earned more than $3 million to not teach students in Wisconsin’s largest school district.

In Madison, the school district was closed for three days after hundreds of teachers engaged in a mass sick-out so they could attend protest rallies at the State Capitol. That could cost the district $2.7 million.

Late Sunday night Madison Metropolitan School District administration announced their schools would be shut down yet one more day, at a possible cost of more than $900,000.

Many of absent teachers converged on the Capitol to protest a bill which would alter their compensation packages and make changes in government employee unions’ ability to collectively bargain on issues other than wages.

While some have speculated that the absent teachers will see their pay docked, that may not be the case if they provide a doctor’s note. Due to collective bargaining rules currently in place, the absences could be considered excused and the teachers would be paid for their protesting.

That possibility took on added significance as the MacIver News Service broke the story Saturday that several doctors in lab coats were handing out medical excuse notes to passers by, without examining the ‘patients.’

“I asked if they were handing out doctors’ excuses and a guy said yes and asked me if I needed one,” one woman told MNS Saturday. “When I told them I needed one for February 16 and 17th, he wondered if I wanted to come back here for the protests next week.”

What happened next surprised her.

“I said, ‘sure,’ and I received a doctor’s note for the 16th through the 25th of February, without a medical exam.”

If all the teachers in Milwaukee and Madison are paid for the days missed, the protest related salaries for just the state’s two largest districts would exceed $6.6 million dollars.

Using a figure of $100,005 for average teacher compensation in MPS  and an average yearly workload of 195 days, these teachers cost approximately $513 per day in salary and benefits to employ. Spread over 5,960.3 full-time licensed teachers in the district, this adds up to $3,057,634 in daily expenses.

The average teacher’s total compensation in Madison is $74,912, according to the Department of Public Instruction. Each day costs $384.16 per teacher. The district has 2,370 teachers.

These figures don’t include administrators and support staff, many of which got an unexpected paid days off thanks to the week’s protests.

The issue extends far beyond Milwaukee and Madison, however. More than two dozen school districts were closed for at least one day last week as teachers called in sick to attend protests over the Budget Repair bill in Madison.

MNS is examining the total costs associated with those teachers’ salaries and will update this story when those figures are available.

Wis. gov to Dems: Stop vacation and get to work
Gov. Scott Walker holds firm as protests continue
Associated Press
8:21 a.m. CST, February 21, 2011

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker today ridiculed the 14 Democratic state senators for skipping town rather than voting on a bill that takes away collective bargaining rights for public workers.

Walker's officre released a statement accusing the Democrats of "vacationing" while taxpayers who pay their salaries are hard at work.

"Instead of stimulating the hospitality sector of Illinois’ economy, Senate Democrats should come back to the Madison, debate the bill, cast their vote, and help get Wisconsin’s economy back on track," Walker said in the statement.

The Democrats say they won't return unless Walker is willing to make concessions to the bill, something he has been unwilling to do. Republican legislative leaders say they have the votes to pass the bill as is.

Wisconsin's Real Doctors and Their Fake Sick Notes for Protesters
By Ford Vox
http://www.theatlantic.com/national/print/2011/02/wisconsins-real-doctors-and-their-fake-sick-notes-for-protesters/71500

Fears over becoming hostage to soaring health insurance premiums has Wisconsin's teachers and other public employees protesting in downtown Madison for the second week running. It's a very real threat to their economic stability, one they'll be ill-equipped to tackle without the unionizing rights proposed legislation would deny them.

No doubt many members of the University of Wisconsin's Department of Family Medicine share the teachers' concerns. Public employees are joining a struggle already familiar to most patients. Family doctors work the front lines advocating for our interests amidst a disintegrating health care system, summoning the will to keep battling with insurers and administrators all while trying to hold on to their belief that they can change human behavior. Family doctors feel your pain and have the battle scars to prove it.

But last week some of these weary warriors carried their patient advocacy too far. In videos breathlessly presented throughout the conservative mediasphere this weekend [scroll down to see], doctor after doctor is videotaped writing patently fraudulent sick notes so that the protesting teachers (whose contracts specify that missing work without an excuse can result in dismissal) can keep marching on against the state's union-busting Republican government.

After viewing the videos at my request last night, Dr. Arthur Derse called me up exclaiming, "Holy mackerel! It's much worse than it looked in the paper. I'm stunned, absolutely stunned." Dr. Derse is the Director of Center for Bioethics and Medical Humanities a the Medical College of Wisconsin. "When all's said and done, it's really the profession of medicine that has the black eye in this case," he says.

There is no question these doctors are masking political opinion in the white coat of the medical profession, Dr. Derse believes. "The videos are pretty damning."

It's sad, but what puzzles me most is how in the world three of the four physicians I can identify from these videos and other media reports are faculty members of UW's Family Medicine department, and one is a senior resident in that same department. It's a good training program, committed to providing sorely-needed primary care doctors to the state of Wisconsin. It teaches professionalism, and its faculty are supposed to model integrity. What were they thinking?

They've managed to belittle a public trust between physicians, employers and patients. A doctor's sick note is a serious document. It represents an employer's desire to verify through a respected, independent, medically qualified third party the fact of an illness and the true need for convalescence. In the videos now circulating online, we witness multiple members of a noted family medicine department trash one of the well-recognized rights and privileges of their profession, with little forethought as to the consequences.

UW's doctors have demeaned not only the doctor-patient relationship, but in so doing, risked the stature doctors hold in our discourse on public policy. When commenting on social issues, physicians trade on the honor of our profession, benefiting from the public's assumption that the wisdom won of caring for so many at their most vulnerable imbues us with some privileged understanding of collective need.

In one of the videos and a newspaper account, Associate Professor Lou Sanner says he's giving out sick notes for "stress" (not a medical diagnosis). He claims he's forming doctor-patient relationships in his slapdash street encounters with apparently healthy protesters. Besides his work in bioethics, Dr. Derse is an emergency physician, regularly tasked with determining fitness for work. He's offended by Dr. Sanner's thin claims. "I couldn't imagine just walking up to people with a stack of work excuses, 'What's your name? Here you go.' ... It reflects poorly on the practice of medicine, and it reflects poorly on physicians who actually do take the time and effort try to determine whether someone is ill and is legitimately away from work," he adds.

These doctors sacrificed a slice of the medical profession's credibility for a political cause. Was it worth it? The fallout is mounting.

After declining to make an administrator available for comment, a public affairs representative
for the University of Wisconsin read the following statement:

It has been reported by some local news media that some protesters at Capitol Square in Madison, Wisconsin have received medical excuse notes from physicians associated with UW Health. While we cannot confirm this event, physicians who may be distributing such material are doing so of their own accord and do not represent UW Health on this issue. We are looking further into this matter.

There's little left to confirm. I expect we will be hearing more from UW this week. UW's unwitting family doctors were swarmed by enterprising conservative videographers who know an O'Keefe moment when it slaps them upside the head. They handily outmaneuvered their naïve prey, succeeding in recording every foible. The videos, including an especially uncomfortable one featuring resident Dr. Patrick McKenna (son of a teacher!), make their intentions transparent and reveal they didn't think too far ahead.

When they did stay on it message, it wasn't much to behold. One of the unidentified young physicians tells an inquisitive local libertarian organization called the MacIver Institute, "We are here writing doctor's notes to support our public employees who have been mentally anguished and distressed this last week and needed to be out here for their mental health." Medically speaking, that's comedy.

Elsewhere in the tape UW faculty member Dr. James Shropshire signs a fake sick note for the MacIver videographer, who tells him he's from California and isn't tolerating the cold Wisconsin weather so well. Dr. Shropshire responds flatly, "So I'm concerned about that. I'd like you to take the rest of the day off today, get some rest, and try to stay healthy," and signs his excuse note.

I discussed what happens next with Dr. Tim Bartholow, Senior Vice President for policy, membership and professional development at the Wisconsin Medical Society. "We do know that our medical examining board is aware, and I think they need to be aware," he says. "I don't think our medical board will be reluctant to respond if they find misrepresentation."

I expect forthcoming complaints will center around this idea of fraudulent representation (and come from folks with obvious political agendas). Theoretically a school board official could make a complaint that their organization was financially harmed (many schools had to close due to the number of teachers at the protests, and some may have received pay on sick days). I'll wager any complaining school board official will be a registered Republican.
Personally I think suspension or revocation of medical licenses would be quite a disproportionate response to the actual harm involved in this high-profile infraction of professional ethics.

The lasting damage is medicine's tarnished public image, and it is in that context that the Wisconsin Medical Society should craft a swift response. As is the case in every state, medical societies represent professional interests and are separate institutions from the medical boards responsible for issuing licenses. Societies accept members in good standing with the boards. In the two years Dr. Bartholow has worked for Wisconsin's medical society, his organization has never had to issue a position statement on a particular case. That silent streak probably ends now, given that the body is charged with representing Wisconsin's doctors to its citizens and its government.

"I think the physicians were seeking to support individually an action that they thought was important, but there are probably going to be some discussions about whether that comports fully with the patient-physician relationship," Dr. Bartholow says.

I've requested interviews with the four UW physicians I could identify and hope to share their side here with you.

48% Back GOP Governor in Wisconsin Spat, 38% Side With Unions
Monday, February 21, 2011

A sizable number of voters are following new Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker’s showdown with unionized public employees in his state, and nearly half side with the governor.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 48% of Likely U.S. Voters agree more with the Republican governor in his dispute with union workers. Thirty-eight percent (38%) agree more with the unionized public employees, while 14% are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

In an effort to close the state’s sizable budget deficit, Walker is proposing to eliminate collective bargaining for public employees including teachers on everything but wage issues. He is excluding public safety workers such as policemen and firemen from his plan.

Thirty-eight percent (38%) of voters think teachers, firemen and policemen should be allowed to go on strike, but 49% disagree and believe they should not have that right. Thirteen percent (13%) are not sure.

There’s strong partisan disagreement on both questions and a wide gap between the Political Class and Mainstream voters.

Thirty-six percent (36%) of all voters say that in their state the average public employee earns more than the average private sector worker. Twenty-one percent (21%) say the government employee earns less, while 20% think their pay is about the same. Twenty-three percent (23%) are not sure.

With states across the country finding that benefits for public workers are becoming difficult to fund in the current economic climate, support for public employee unions has fallen.  Forty-five percent (45%) of Americans favor them, and 45% don’t. These findings include 21% who Strongly Favor such unions and 30% who are Strongly Opposed to them.

(Want a free daily e-mail update? If it's in the news, it's in our polls). Rasmussen Reports updates are also available on Twitter or Facebook.

The survey of 1,000 Likely Voters was conducted on February 18-19, 2011 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.

Fifty percent (50%) of voters favor reducing their home state’s government payroll by one percent a year for 10 years either by reducing the number of state employees or by cutting the pay of state workers.

Twenty-eight percent (28%) oppose a cut of this nature, while another 23% aren’t sure about it.

In a survey last month, voters were evenly divided over the idea of a 10% across-the-board pay cut for all state employees to help reduce overall spending.

Public employee unions have long been strong supporters, financially and otherwise, of Democratic Party candidates, so it’s no surprise that 68% of Democrats support the union workers in the Wisconsin dispute.

Sixty-eight percent (68%) of Republicans and 56% of voters not affiliated with either of the major political parties side with the governor.

Most Democrats (54%) say teachers, firemen and policemen should be allowed to go on strike. The majority of GOP voters (62%) and unaffiliateds (58%) disagree.

While 61% of Republicans and 56% of unaffiliated voters like the idea of a one percent reduction in their state’s government payroll for the next 10 years, a plurality (41%) of Democrats are opposed.

The Political Class’ opposition is more emphatic. Sixty-four percent (64%) of Political Class voters oppose a payroll cut of this kind, while 56% of those in the Mainstream think it’s a good idea.

But then 56% of Mainstream voters agree more with the governor in the Wisconsin dispute, while 56% of the Political Class side with the union workers.

Sixty-seven percent (67%) of all voters say they are following at least somewhat closely news reports about the Wisconsin governor’s effort to limit collective bargaining rights for most state employees, with 37% who are following Very Closely.

With new Republican majorities in both chambers of Wisconsin’s legislature, the governor’s plan is likely to pass, prompting thousands of protesting public workers and their allies to descend on the state capital.

President Obama and the Rev. Jesse Jackson, among others, have publicly sided with the protestors, while national Republicans have backed the governor.

A sizable majority of Americans say their states are now having major budget problems, and they think spending cuts, not higher taxes, are the solution.

Most voters continue to oppose federal bailouts for financially troubled states.  Voters aren’t thrilled with the idea of letting states declare bankruptcy, but they're more supportive if told government employees might have their pensions reduced in the process.

Seventy-eight percent (78%) of Americans say politicians’ unwillingness to reduce government spending is to blame for the budget crises in many states.

When it comes to the nation’s historic-level federal budget deficit, 70% of all voters think voters are more willing to make the hard choices needed to reduce government spending than elected politicians are.

Sixty-six percent (66%) of all voters nationwide favor a proposal to cut the federal payroll by 10% over the coming decade.

Sixty-eight percent (68%) of Americans think workers in the private sector work harder than government workers.

Why should they get any sympathy at all?   We all are dealing with the horrible economy, so why should they be immune?

Thats not what I said.  I personally don't think they should be, but I've seen teachers, firemen, police, etc... from other states siding with them.  Not to mention, I'm sure that many within their state might have thought that they "deserve" what they have, without looking into the situation.  Teachers staying away and causing headaches for parents will alienate them.

Escape to Illinois to avoid vote on budget leaves lawmakers short on essentials

Neither the Illinois nor the Wisconsin constitutions allow for the arrest of a member of the state legislature during the session unless the lawmaker is being charged with a felony, treason or a breach of the peace.

"Gov. Walker has said in the last few days that he has no intention to order police to arrest lawmakers," said his press secretary, Cullen Werwie.

Mordecai Lee, a professor of government affairs at the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee and former Democratic state senator, said that on several occasions during his Senate career, the sergeant-at-arms came to his office to tell him it was time to vote, escorting him to the floor.

In a "Call of the House," the sergeant-at-arms locks the doors to the Senate chambers with the lawmakers inside while searching the Capitol to make a quorum, Lee said.

Lee said Wisconsin police have no power to take the lawmakers into custody as long as they remain out of the state.

Even so, the senators remain mum on their exact locations in Illinois.

"There's no point in issuing a press release about where I am," said Sen. Fred Risser, D-Madison. "I'm not necessarily in one place."

Sen. Jim Holperin, D-Eagle River, said they don't want protesters showing up at their doors.

"We are at work and we do need to have the ability to do that without distraction," he said.

While in their self-imposed exile, the lawmakers are trying to stay connected to home.

Two-Thirds of Wisconsin Public-School 8th Graders Can’t Read Proficiently—Despite Highest Per Pupil Spending in Midwest
Tuesday, February 22, 2011
By Terence P. Jeffrey

(CNSNews.com) - Two-thirds of the eighth graders in Wisconsin public schools cannot read proficiently according to the U.S. Department of Education, despite the fact that Wisconsin spends more per pupil in its public schools than any other state in the Midwest.

In the National Assessment of Educational Progress tests administered by the U.S. Department of Education in 2009—the latest year available—only 32 percent of Wisconsin public-school eighth graders earned a “proficient” rating while another 2 percent earned an “advanced” rating. The other 66 percent of Wisconsin public-school eighth graders earned ratings below “proficient,” including 44 percent who earned a rating of “basic” and 22 percent who earned a rating of “below basic.”

The test also showed that the reading abilities of Wisconsin public-school eighth graders had not improved at all between 1998 and 2009 despite a significant inflation-adjusted increase in the amount of money Wisconsin public schools spent per pupil each year.

In 1998, according to the U.S. Department of Education, Wisconsin public school eighth graders scored an average of 266 out of 500 on the NAEP reading test. In 2009, Wisconsin public school eighth graders once again scored an average of 266 out of 500 on the NAEP reading test.  Meanwhile, Wisconsin public schools increased their per pupil expenditures from $4,956 per pupil in 1998 to 10,791 per pupil in 2008. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics inflation calculator the $4,956 Wisconsin spent per pupil in 1998 dollars equaled $6,546 in 2008 dollars. That means that from 1998 to 2008, Wisconsin public schools increased their per pupil spending by $4,245 in real terms yet did not add a single point to the reading scores of their eighth graders and still could lift only one-third of their eighth graders to at least a “proficient” level in reading.

The $10,791 that Wisconsin spent per pupil in its public elementary and secondary schools in fiscal year 2008 was more than any other state in the Midwest.

Neighboring Illinois spent $10,353 per student in 2008, Minnesota spent $10,048 per student; Iowa spent $9,520 per student.  Among Midwest states, Nebraska was second to Wisconsin in per pupil spending in its public schools, spending $10,565 per student.

Of these nearby states, only Minnesota did slightly better teaching reading to its public school students. In 2009, 39 percent of eighth graders in Minnesota public schools earned a rating of “proficient” or better in reading, and the average eighth grade reading score in the state was 270 out of 500.

In Illinois, only 32 percent of eighth graders earned a rating of “proficient” or better in reading, and the average eighth grade reading score was 265 out of 500. In Iowa, only 32 percent of eighth graders earned a rating of “proficient” or better in reading, and the average reading score was 265 out of 500. In Nebraska, only 35 percent of eighth graders earned a rating of “proficient” or better in their public schools, and the average reading score was 267 out of 500.

Nationwide, only 30 percent of public school eighth graders earned a rating of “proficient” or better in reading, and the average reading score on the NAEP test was 262 out of 500.

The National Assessment of Educational Progress explains its student rating system as follows: “Basic denotes partial mastery of prerequisite knowledge and skills that are fundamental for proficient work at each
grade. Proficient represents solid academic performance. Students reaching this level have demonstrated competency over challenging subject matter. Advanced represents superior performance.”

In other words, despite the $10,791 that taxpayers were paying to educate students in Wisconsin public schools, two-thirds of eighth graders in those schools showed at best only a “partial mastery of prerequisite knowledge and skills that are fundamental for proficient work” at that grade level.

In fiscal 2008, the federal government provided $669.6 million in subsidies to the public schools in Wisconsin.

Wisconsin Teachers Union owns health insurance company - collectively bargained for.
PublicSchoolSpending.com ^ | Fall 2010 | Education Action Group / MacIver Institute

Here are a few simple, startling facts for anyone concerned about the financial condition of Wisconsin public schools:

WEA Trust, an insurance company established and closely associated with the Wisconsin Education Association Council (WEAC), siphons millions of crucial dollars from K-12 schools and their students every year.

WEA Trust has grown very fat on public school dollars, with a net worth of $316 million and a team of 12 administrators all receiving compensation packages worth six figures per year.

Sadly, this insurance swindle is endorsed by state law. We at Education Action Group believe it’s time for the citizens of Wisconsin to demand that their school boards be allowed to freely shop for less expensive employee health insurance.

That’s particularly important in the current economic environment, when schools have been forced to lay off teachers, curtail student programs, privatize services and, in some districts, seek permission from voters to exceed their local revenue caps.

The problem is state law, which makes the identity of a school district’s employee health insurance carrier a topic of collective bargaining. That means school boards and local school employee unions must agree on the insurance company that will provide health coverage.

So most unions have traditionally come to the negotiating table demanding expensive WEA Trust insurance coverage, and the strategy has been effective. About 64 percent of Wisconsin’s 426 districts carry WEA Trust insurance, despite its prohibitive costs.

Why do union employees demand WEA Trust coverage?

WEA Trust offers what is commonly known as the “Cadillac” of school employee health coverage. It earned that moniker for two very good reasons - the health coverage is very thorough, and the cost to local school districts is very high.

WEAC pressures its local union officials to stick with WEA Trust. One district administrator told us about a meeting where everyone present, including union employees, agreed that a non-WEA health plan would be better for the district. He said state WEAC representatives were present and argued in favor of WEA Trust, just because it’s the union’s insurance brand.

WI State Employees Receive Preliminary Layoff Notices (inc GOP Sen majority leader's wife)
Channel 3000 ^ | February 24, 2011 | WISC

HUSTISFORD, Wis. -- Lisa Fitzgerald, wife of Republican Senate majority leader Scott Fitzgerald, is among a group of 34 state employees who have received preliminary layoff notices.

Superintendent Jeremy Biehl said the school board sent layoff slips to all 34 members of the teaching staff, including librarians and counselors. Biehl said the move is in response to the uncertainty of the state budget repair bill.

The superintendent said the district is following the advice of the Wisconsin Association of School Boards, which urged local school officials to decide on staff cuts by Monday or risk having those layoffs challenged later in court.

State law requires school districts to provide staff final layoff notices by March 15 and preliminary notices 15 days before that.

(Credit: AP Photo/The Oshkosh Northwestern, Adam Jungwirth) Back in 2007, then-Sen. Barack Obama said that if he were president, he'd be walking the picket lines in solidarity with workers if unions were ever threatened. Now, the president has that chance in Wisconsin, but the White House says President Obama has no such plans.

Massive demonstrations have gone on for days in Wisconsin, as public workers and their supporters protest Republican Gov. Scott Walker's so-called "budget repair bill," which would scale back public workers' benefits, as well as their collective bargaining rights.

Public workers and their supporters argue that eliminating most public unions' collective bargaining rights has nothing to do with the budget and that the governor should drop that element of his plan. Walker isn't budging, however -- meaning that the ongoing debate has more to do with ideology than the state budget.

On the campaign trail in 2007, Mr. Obama had this to say: "If American workers are being denied their right to organize when I'm in the White House, I will put on a comfortable pair of shoes and I will walk on that picket line with you as President of the United States."

CBS News chief White House correspondent Chip Reid asked White House Press Secretary Jay Carney about that promise today, to which Carney responded that the president has already made his position on the matter clear.

"I think that the president has different means of speaking out on issues and being heard," he said. "And, clearly, he did. He made his viewpoints known on the situation in Wisconsin, the need for people to come together."

In an interview last week with local television station WTMJ-TV, Mr. Obama said, "Some of what I've heard coming out of Wisconsin, where you're just making it harder for public employees to collectively bargain generally seems like more of an assault on unions. And I think it's very important for us to understand that public employees, they're our neighbors, they're our friends... And I think it's important not to vilify them or to suggest that somehow all these budget problems are due to public employees."

Organizing for America, Mr. Obama's political arm of the Democratic National Committee, has played a role in facilitating the protests in Wisconsin and across the country, but the organization has downplayed its role. Meanwhile, as the conflict over public sector workers spreads to other states, several of Mr. Obama's potential 2012 Republican challengers are speaking out in support of Gov. Walker.

Leaders of the House Progressive Caucus are calling on the president to go to Wisconsin and continue to voice his support for unions.

"Of course I'd like to hear more from President Obama," Caucus co-chair Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) said on MSNBC on Wednesday. " He's made some statements, he should get credit for that, we'd like to hear him make some more statements. I think President Obama should come to Wisconsin and stand with the workers."

On a conference call on Wednesday, co-chair Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.) said, "There's a bully pulpit there that the president has and I think it needs to be used."

Amy Dean, a labor activist and former AFL-CIO official in California, told the Wall Street Journal the president could do more as the leader of the Democratic Party.

"Everybody is looking to the president on this one," she said.

Protesters in Wisconsin said the same to the Huffington Post.

"He owes it to us," said Kathie Free, a retired Milwaukee public school social worker. "Obama was not put into office just by the big money. He was put into office by millions of poor and middle-class people who walk the neighborhoods, talking to neighbors, getting the votes, and that's how Obama got in, and he has to start remember how he got in. He'd better start working for the middle class and poor people."

Not everyone on the side of the unions, however, thinks the president's presence would benefit their cause. "I don't think the president's involvement in making this a Republican and Democrat issue would be particularly helpful at this point," said Andy Stern, a former president of the Service Employees International Union, the Wall Street Journal reports.

AWOL WI Dem admits parents financially supporting him in lieu of paycheck
Examiner ^ | March 2, 2011 | Marc Schenker

AWOL WI Dem admits parents financially supporting him in lieu of paycheck. AWOL Wisconsin Democrat State Senator Jon Erpenbach is admitting that his mom and dad are now financially supporting him because he refuses to go back to Wisconsin to pick up his paycheck for being a state senator. In a TV interview from an undisclosed location in Chicago, the absent Erpenback also admitted that he was basically running out of money to support the hotel stay in Illinois that he has chosen for himself due to his refusal to come back to Wisconsin. He also confessed that he lives paycheck to paycheck and that he is grateful that his parents are there to prop him up. The only problem is that Erpenbach is 50 years old, which is an age that is too old for a man to still be relying on mom and dad (who are already on Social Security).

Wisconsin State Employees Should Have Some Koch and Smile

By Christian Schneider

Posted on March 01, 2011 10:32 AM When the history books record l’affaire Wisconsin, public-employee unions will have plenty of villains. They will remember Republican governor Scott Walker, who proposed scaling back their ability to collectively bargain. They will revile Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald, who cut off debate and “rushed” the bill to a vote after 61 hours of debate on the Assembly floor. But for the Left, the most enduring villain might be the billionaire Koch brothers.

When frequently vile Buffalobeast.com blogger Ian Murphy prank-called Walker, he pretended to be David Koch — thinking that would be the most embarrassing call Walker could take. (Or perhaps Murphy simply hadn’t perfected a Kim Jong-il impersonation yet. “Hey Scott, it’s your boy Kim!”)

The vitriol from protesting Wisconsin workers towards the Kochs emerged quickly and intensely. Signs ranging between lame and vulgar (often both) dot the public-union marches.

But what the protesters don’t realize is that they actually have a reason to root for the Koch brothers.

According to the State of Wisconsin Investment Board (SWIB), the Wisconsin Retirement System owns $5.5 million in Georgia Pacific corporate bonds. (Georgia Pacific is owned by Koch Industries.) This is the retirement system in which the overwhelming majority of state and local employees participate. These are the pension benefits that public employees are trying so hard to protect.

So here’s the challenge: Explain to a Wisconsin state worker that they are the ones helping fund the Koch brothers. Then sit back and watch the fun.

Granted, $5.5 million out of a $18.5 billion fixed-income bond fund isn’t a whole lot. (The state also holds about $5 million worth of Colgate bonds, meaning it is in the pocket of Big Toothpaste.) But one imagines the public unions’ vitriol will soften a little bit when they realize their retirement payout is incumbent on the success of the Kochs. They’re all part of the same money-making ecosystem, despite many state employees believing all their retirement funds are invested exclusively in dreams and rainbows.

So in the end, public unions should recognize that the real Koch will do them a lot more good than the fake one ever did.

State says damage to marble at Capitol could hit $7.5 million (Slobs destroy MY Capitol building!)
 jsonline ^ | 3/3/2011 | don walker

State officials said Thursday that damage to the marble inside and out the State Capitol would cost an estimated $7.5 million.

Cari Anne Renlund, chief legal counsel for the state Department of Administration, said in Dane County court that estimates of damage to marble includes $6 million to repair damaged marble inside the Capitol, $1 million for damage outside and $500,000 for costs to supervise the damage.

Much of the damage apparently has come from tape used to put up signs and placards at the Capitol.
