Title: Caffeine+creatine=epic cramps
Post by: lovemonkey on February 23, 2011, 02:58:36 PM
Everything from my abdominals to my toes to my trapz started cramping today. Is this common? Creatine has given me slight cramps before but nothing like the ones I had today. Caffeine might be more potent in that regard than I previously thought. I tried to drink plenty water but didn't seem to help.

Discuss.

How much did you take? Also what form of creatine did you use?

Caffeine 200mg twice a day(morning and before workout/cardio).

Regular creatine monohydrate, roughly 5 grams two times a day.

Yeah caffeine and creatine is totally in the same ballpark as hormones, hgh, insulin and diuretics + weighing way too much. Totally.

Try lowering the dosages and taking the creatine at different times..I think you can get by with 2-5grams a day..

Yeah I was wondering about the creatine dose.. might have been a slight overkill.

do not read what the supplement companies tell you. There goal is sell you more and more of it.I think for someone of your weight you may be fine with low dosages...In example 3-5 grams is enough.

could it be dehydration?

Just up your fluids and electrolytes,  that should solve the problem....

I take creatine and caffeine together but I also drink alot of water,  something as simple as adding some celtic sea salt to your water could solve your problem....

400 mg/day is way too much caffeine.  You need to find your tolerance level.  You should have started small, say 50-100 mgs.

Creatine dose is also probably too high.  Don't take it more than twice a day... any more is just a waste.

Drink 3-4 liters of filtered water per day.

Invest in a good chelated multi-mineral supplement.  Take it twice a day.  That should take care of any cramps.

5g is fine once a day, just drink more and take a magnesium supplement.

If you cramp, magnesium and/or water intake is too low. Nothing to do with the creatine and caffeine.

You're toying with your life by stacking Creatine with Caffeine - it's as dangerous as Pop rocks and soda :o

Enjoy it while it lasts, both will be banned in the US for otc sale soon anyways, then you can get creatine only by prescription if you have low ATP levels, cost is 1500$ per kg.

Coffee will be even worse, you can buy it in a "coffehouse" "to go" for 1.55$ per cup.  :o :o :o

I hear early next year the feds are going to assign everyone in America with a gym membership a parole officer to report to post workout for random drug tests......

Gotta get that Cell Tech off the streets, think of the children.

That's a great idea.

I would say it would be even better if you were able to arrest bodybuilders on sight, because they all abuse steroids.  :o :o

It is quite common among idiots and fools, who doesn't know anything about nutrients and minerals. You don't need just water, you need magnesium, potassium etc. to keep up the balance in your system. If you ignore that fact, just enjoy your cramps and shut up.

So that would be the reason why I asked for information by making this thread since I was not sure what was going on with my body. A fool would keep doing the same thing and expect different results.

You're way too full of yourself, douche.

WUT?
Ain't caffeine acting like a diuretic? And ain't creatine storing water in your body?

You shouldn't be on caffeine when doing creatine. Simple as that. Taking caffeine will decrease the potential benefits of creatine.

My thinking is that I should be able to drink a tad bit more water to compensate for the diuretic effect of the caffeine, so the creatine will still be able to do its "magic".

Caffeine 200mg twice a day(morning and before workout/cardio).

that is a SHITLOAD of caffeine to be taking every day lol

i drink NO EXPLODE before pressing workouts which contains 200mg caffeine and supposedly creatine too, and it keeps me wide awake for like 8 hours or more. could not imagine doing 400mg caffeine every day, my heart would explode and/or id never be able to sleep.

lol really?

They say that 100mg is about equal to one cup of coffee or perhaps a tad bit more. 4-5 cups in a day is a bit much but by no means unheard of.

I've had plenty coffee in my day so that could explain my tolerance.

Spot on, "caffeine kills the effects of creatine" is 90's wisdom. No problem at all to take the two together.

Caffeine counteracts the ergogenic action of muscle creatine loading.

Abstract

This study aimed to compare the effects of oral creatine (Cr) supplementation with creatine supplementation in combination with caffeine (Cr+C) on muscle phosphocreatine (PCr) level and performance in healthy male volunteers (n = 9). Before and after 6 days of placebo, Cr (0.5 g x kg-1 x day-1), or Cr (0.5 g x kg-1 x day-1) + C (5 mg x kg-1 x day-1) supplementation, 31P-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy of the gastrocnemius muscle and a maximal intermittent exercise fatigue test of the knee extensors on an isokinetic dynamometer were performed. The exercise consisted of three consecutive maximal isometric contractions and three interval series of 90, 80, and 50 maximal voluntary contractions performed with a rest interval of 2 min between the series. Muscle ATP concentration remained constant over the three experimental conditions. Cr and Cr+C increased (P < 0.05) muscle PCr concentration by 4-6%. Dynamic torque production, however, was increased by 10-23% (P < 0.05) by Cr but was not changed by Cr+C. Torque improvement during Cr was most prominent immediately after the 2-min rest between the exercise bouts. The data show that Cr supplementation elevates muscle PCr concentration and markedly improves performance during intense intermittent exercise. This ergogenic effect, however, is completely eliminated by caffeine intake.

So I made 1 mistake, its a Belgian university. Anyway I think Vandenberghe K, Gillis N, Van Leemputte M, Van Hecke P, Vanstapel F, Hespel P know more than some random englishman in new york who thinks he knows everything. Stupid names notwithstanding.  :D

Aside from the fact that there are enough studies proving that caffeine has no effect on creatine, the problem with this study is that the environment was set for caffeine to interfere with the creatine. The study is from 1996, it's way too old.

It can be easily avoided by timing and enough water intake.
