I am averaging about 5.2 miles in 40 minutes. Unfortunately after 3 days or so I have to take a day off to recover. I want to run 6 days a week, any tips on how to reduce the DOMS? I am already eating blueberries every day and stretching afer my run.
Newmom, any tips?
-
I think it's a matter of getting used to it
secondly... go run out fucking side ok, LOL :D
-
Pull your skirt down and run anyways.

Sounds to me that you are not drinking enough water and could be hydrated a bit better. If you are having any muscle soreness from running, you will QUICKLY adapt to it and it won`t affect you in the least.

no man, I enjoy treadmill running! I can track everything, specific time and splits. Also I am thinking about my knees, running on concrete can't be good for them. Also I don't know how to keep pace outside. Seeing the numbers on the treadmill keeps me focused on the end target. Turn my brain off, watch a couple of music videos and before you know the run is over.

Thanks TA, I will make a conscious effort to consume more water. Costco has vitamin water on sale, I may pick some up. They are just as cheap as buying regular bottled water
-
Try running on an outdoor track, that's what I do. By the way, an 8 min per mile pace for 5 miles ain't too shabby man.
-
I use to run 40 minutes every day but after a couple of days I found I was very far from my house.
I ran track in high school and college. I was a sprinter but I spent a lot of time running distance. 5 plus miles in 40 minutes is pretty good for a bodybuilder. Soreness could be because this is new to you? Soreness will just go in time. I would advise throwing in some intervals. Like 6 x 800 meters (half mile). 8 x 400 meters is good too. With the 800 walk or jog slowly a 400 meter rest period. On the 400 slow jog a 400 or walk a 200 meters. To many long runs takes the spring out of your legs. The intervals in time will improve your distance times. Make sure you have some non stressful runs too. Meaning just get out there and enjoy the run with no pressure of the clock.
Having a day off after three hard days is ok. Only pure distance runners that don't lift run 6 times a week. If you're lifting you can't do that without being put into a rubber room.
-
Good post oldtimer. I'm curious, which did you find harder, the 400 repeats, or the 800 repeats? We ran 400 repeats during track season, and 800 repeats during cross-country season, and I hated them both ;D
-
Unless ur an athlete don't run. There's no need for it. It will eventually take its toll on the joints. If u enjoy running or ur an athlete who MUST run then its ok. People who run to "lose weight" or "get ripped" are delusional. Tell me that u just enjoy running and that's why ur doing it. Or, that ur a professional athlete who MUST run.
-

hehe..actually if you check again my time is even better than that.. I do 5 minutes in 38 minutes. I am actually running 7:30/mile
I stop at 40 minutes because I want to be able to run as many days as possible per week without killing myself.
-
Gayer than taking a camera to gym for shooting your cardio results....... wait WUT.... :-\

Dov, I am doing it for the fun of it, at this stage I am getting a lot of joy out of running. I am far from a professional athlete, and for now running is more fun than lifting weights. Oddly enough I am not losing weight, my face has gotten leaner but overall I am the same weight and body composition (more or less)

I use my phone to as a pedometer, etc...It keeps track of all the details like calories, distance, pace, etc..Then it sync's with my email account. I'm sure you can do that on an iphone as well

A 7:30 per mile pace is even better, get it down to a 6 min per mile pace, and then you've really got something to write home about.

Cool and essential... I bet people were more fat an in worse shape some 40 years ago because they couldn't keep track of their calories on their phone ::)

It's all hard. Nothing hurts worse than an all out 400. It's longest any one can truly sprint near top speed. Judging by the speed of elite athletes it seems middle distance times show it's almost a sprint.

stop running on a treadmill...it does not equat to actuall running...
stay well hydrated, and take quinine, and potassium...
quinine can be as simple as a few glasses of tonic water a day...i take these though..you can get them at any grocery store for around $2.00 a bottle..

I run with my dogs, we only go for about a 1/2 hr but its more for the mind than the body. I can`t see running on a machine, I actually like running through the woods, getting muddy every now and again.
Oh yeah, I have to stretch first or I cramp like a bitch.

that's the thing for me too...running outside just clears your mind...gives you a chance to think about shit...treadmills don't..treadmills also throw your legs back for you, totally defeating the fundamentals of running...

I dunno you're an exception. Most serious runners are small and under 140 though, there is a reason for it, it's easier to move a lighter body.

The thing about running is that it literally pwns the shit out of all other forms of "aerobic" training. When I could run for a good clip everything else aerobically, was a cake walk.

Show me one heavyweight bodybuilder that can run a marathon in under 4 hours and I will be impressed.
-
A marathon is too damn far, how about Cooper's 12 min run test? It's a decent measure of aerobic fitness, and it doesn't require one to run 26 miles.
-

Well then! Tell your results, tough guy.
Me..3000 m back in the military days. That's the Last time I did cooper of course - it's pure torture and I'm hell no doing it voluntarily.
-
3000 meters in 12 min is damn good! Elite level even, and I am sincerly impressed ;D When I was 23 I did a VO2 max test at my unversity, and I topped out @ 71ml/kg/min
-
lol 3000m isn't elite level in cooper... it's good, but lol, elite :D
when people are in good shape they can run 3000 and 3000+, still in 1980's it was a regular to see 2800-3000 in cooper, now days it's considered elite? No it's not, peoples avarage fitness has just gone down the drain, that's all.
-

Show me a marathon runner than can carry a 230lb lifter while running a mile.

Yep, I must agree.
Thanks dj181 for your appreciation anyway :)
But 3k is not elite. There were many guys running that or more. I would say guys who did some sort of sports even with little seriousness and were active otherwise ran 3k on cooper.
So, not elite :(
-
Clearly elite.
-
I just checked it on the net, and multiple sources put 2700 meters or greater within the 12 min time frame at the elite level, for males within the age range of 30 to 39.
-
Then I was 18 yo and not on bodybuilding, weighing something like 170 lbs... maybe even less.
Kenenisa Bekele has been calculated to run 4 755m in 12 minutes as his WR on 5000m is 12.37,35 :o
That's something I would call elite ;D
-
Fuck you guys set some goddamn high standards! So, I bet dat my 1:57 in the 800 meters in high school sucked ass, right ;D lol
-
The most simple way to test aerobic fitness is the 1.5 mile test. It seems to be a standard in the US military and many police academies. If you can go under 9 you're in good cardio shape. Under 10 is decent.
It's good to be well rounded. Being strong but gassing because you have no conditioning is phony strength.
-
That's not bad dj. Not at all. Womens WR is 1.53,28 from 1983 ;D
Seriously speaking your result sounds good.
-

2700 m in 12 minutes? That is holding a 13.5 km/hr pace for 12 minutes, that's nowhere near 'elite'. My last treadmill run I did 13.5 km/hr for 35 minutes and I only run like 3 or 4 times a week and have never been more than a slightly above average runner.
-
Show me a marathon runner than can carry a 230lb lifter while running a mile.
well since I finished my 2nd marathon about 4 hours ago, there is NO way anyone could carry a 230llb anything LOL. Although, I did see some pretty overweight people running so good for them.
Red Hook, you can totally run 6 days a week. You've a good timing thing down. But seriously, especially when it warms up, go run outside. I so much prefer outside. That type of treadmill you run on gives me the worst shin splints. Just make sure to stretch before and after. Honestly I run faster outside
-

I used to run everyday and man, I was tired like a fuck..after a while I couldn't get a hard-on to save my life....my body was so run down..... though I did lose a ton of weight though...just run three to four days a week..thats good enough

same here..but also..my poundages went down..couldn't lift as heavy as before...I guess the extra mass gave me more leverage

run alot = feel good, look like shit
lift = look good, feel like shit
do GH and test while running AND lifting = look good and feel good
-

well if you dont replace what you burn off then yes you lose mass
you can gain mass by running if you eat enough or actually eating ALOT
you can also look just right while losing a tad bit of mass eating slightly above normal

That's my point. Hardcore running makes you weak and small.
Men have low test levels, women have low estrogen levels, and lose breast tissue, and both get the same "skinny fat" look, with flattish muscle tone. It's best to do medium runs, where you can develop stamina, yet still maintain muscle. Nobody is really designed for marathons, as it breaks down the body---who wants to look like a asexual being?
Just as bbing is extreme for the physique, so is Marathon.

if your just jogging you aint doing much but burning calories, you might aswell be doing painting or carpentry or mowing grass if you are going to run submaximal

Not exactly Parker, I'm talking mainly about the cause and effect relationship of being extremely fit. As one's fitness levels improve they also have greater and stronger feelings of well-being, ie. feeling invincible. And it is also true that running can be overdone, in my experience it's best not to run much more than 20 miles per week.
-
Just for shits and giggles I went out and ran a full hour this AM, probably covered about 6 miles or so. Didn`t feel nearly as good as a 3 mile run.

400 repeats are pure hell. when i ran track i was a solid quarter miler, but training for it was/is just hell. the oxygen deprivation during the last 100m really gets you in amazing condition, though. I've been doing my old track workouts again, got my 400m time down to 53. I think I can crack 50 again by the summer.

One day I realised bodybuilding was an illusion and that my idols were more familiar with needle gauges than the "Weider principles". A feeling of liberation swept my body as I tore up an autographed Jay Cutler 8x10 and proudly watched as the last remnants of my supplement stash swirled and vanished down the sink. Gone and very much forgotten.
And you know what? I decided to go for a little run. So I ran to the end of the road. And when I got there, I thought maybe I'd run to the end of town. And when I got there, I thought maybe I'd just run across Greenbow County. And I figured, since I run this far, maybe I'd just run across the great state of Alabama. And that's what I did. I ran clear across Alabama. For no particular reason I just kept on going. I ran clear to the ocean. And when I got there, I figured, since I'd gone this far, I might as well turn around, just keep on going. When I got to another ocean, I figured, since I'd gone this far, I might as well just turn back, keep right on going.

those are for the really elite runners that poop themselves. Marathons and even half marathons have plenty of port a potties along the route. Take up swimming. Unless you are sprinting. There isn't much reason to run long distance. Just take a look at the bodies of both sports athletes. Swimmers hold more mass and look better than long distance runners. Plus you don't have shin splints, joint issues later on.
-

Great "sport" ::)
If that happened in bodybuilding everybody would be calling it retarded, homo and whatever :D
-
Personally, I believe the key to good health and fitness lies in moderation. Running isn't bad for most folks as long as it doesn't become an obsession. The same is true for bodybuilding, and most other athletic endeavors. I don't run much anymore, fast walking, bicycling, stair-stepping and swimming are what I enjoy doing for the cardio benefits. I switch these out each day that I do cardio, which is 5 or 6 days a week.
I know people who trained for ran marathons and who are now a bit crippled as a result of the beating their joints took from this endeavor. So instead of being more fit than the average person their age, they are less so. Despite that most twenty-somethings can't imagine themselves ever being sixty-something (like I am) most will live that long and longer. And you can trust me on this, regardless of how old one lives to be, life is better when you are fit and still able to be active and do the things you've always did. There are fit men in their 70's who work out at the gym I do. A couple of them were amateur bodybuilders and power lifters. They may not be as muscular or as cut as they once were, but they are much more fit than some folks in their thirties.
-
Good post Prime, especially when you said "done in moderation". I can only speak from my own personal experience when I say that running is the king of aerobic exercise. When I was a very fit runner ALL other forms of aerobic exercise were a cake walk (swimming, cycling, hiking, etc).
-
I won't argue that running is "king" when it comes to aerobic exercises. I used to run outside in my old neighborhood despite the fact that living in the Pacific Northwest that means running in the rain. I bore too easily to run on the treadmill or even on a track....the best I can do is sprints on the treadmill. I like to run naked and barefoot, which is why I have a home treadmill as it is generally frowned on when one runs down the street stark naked. Ha, ha.
