Title: Bodybuilding books
Post by: DK II on February 28, 2011, 02:18:05 AM
I know this has been discussed before, but the search function sucks big time and i cannot find any thread.

I am looking for some good books about BB, anything from BB culture like "Muscle: Confessions of an Unlikely Bodybuilder" or "Pumping Iron", training books like "Starting Strength", Nutrition (Chris Aceto?) or William Llewellyn's "Anabolics".

Just give me a hint on your favorites.

I read that the 'Mayor of Bodybuilding' wrote 'Schmoeing 101', with a foreword by Evan Centopani and Lonnie Teper, but the pages were stuck together when the draft reached the publishers and they turned it down.

Seriously DK, you can't go wrong with stuff by Chris Aceto, Bill Starr and Arnie's encyclopaedia. Are you talking about ebooks or hard copies you can buy in bookstores?

Definitely get the Positions of Flexion books/movies if you can. Wish I had kept them...Re-shaped how I view training. In fact Dorians routines were based on POF principals (though I do not think he specifically did POF, just a variation).

Muscle by Jon Hotten was a good read.

Historical:

Duchaine's Underground Steroid Handbook. Always fun to read it from an historical prospective. Some stuff is still good in it, other things not some much. But Duchaine writes with a wit and charm about the topic which his fanboys rarely capture now a days.

Muscletown USA- Scholarly account history of York Barbell, who literally controled olympic lifting, powerlifting and bodybuilding from the start through the 1960's. Just a good book all around, and not a dry read like many historical readings. It's gossipy, but in a polite way.

Others I have not read, but are said to be good-

Muscle Wars by Rick Wayne.

Muscle, Smoke, and Mirrors by Randy Roach- Somewhat like Muscletown, but broader, and a bit more gossipy.

Chemical Pink- Like a female version of Muscle: Confessions......

-----

Bodybuilding:

Still like the original Poliquin Principles. Charles is a bit nuts now, but the old stuff is golden.

----------------

Powerlifting:

Starr's The Strong Shall Survive. All other 5 x5 programs are pretenders to the throne.

Inside Powerlifting, by Terry Todd. Good look at old school lifters and programs, but has gotten very expensive on the used book scene.

Fred Hatfield's Powerlifting and Bodybuilding books are still pretty good reads.

Anthony Ditillo's stuff is excellent.

---

Olympic Lifting:

Artie Dreschler's Weightlifting Encyclopedia. Everything about olympic lifting, but a dry read.

Tommy Kono's Weightlifting, Olympic Style. Great lifter, great teacher.

Greg Everett's Olympic Weightlifting. Good book.

-------

Nutrition:

I like the stuff Lyle McDonald puts out.

Duchaine's Bodyopus is a good read still, after all these years.

Yes, but i have read most of this stuff, and i was looking for sth "new", even if it's old.  ;D ;D

I was thinking about buying them online at amazon, but if i can download them (for a first look, obviously, and then i will buy them right away  ::) ::) ) i don't mind as well.

Thanks a lot, there's a lot of stuff in there that i didn't know yet!!

That's more "the practical guide to Bodybuilding". Although the Bible has a lot of entertainment and BB culture as well, but i have also red that one (every night before bed).

Why would you read a bb book? Personally I believe all bits of interesting info and truth have been posted on this site in the past 7-8 years. The reality of drugs, the lies, smoke and mirrors and not last the omnipresence of gay. It's a reality. This whole "industry is an illusion" much like our society today. As we get older we start seeing through the smoke and past the mirrors.

Because i am bored and i feel that "reading a book" is more intellectual than "surfing the internet".

Also, i feel like i should spend more time with old time, offline hobbies.

Is that a good enough answer?  ;D ;D ;D

I agree in a sense. I do believe we should read more and I started looking for more books. I write one so it also helps me research wise albeit the pleasurable kind. A bodybuilding book though? Come on.

So Nasser's book isn't coming out? Fuck, I'm crushed. All jokes aside, I don't get why nobody did already. I can see guys like Arnold, Columbu and others not doing it 'cause they built a part or all of their reputation on this business. But a lot of others fell in the gutter after years and years of gay for pay and drug abuse of all kinds. And none has come forward with a book about it.

Bill Pearl had a great book with like thousands of exercises in it, can't remember the name but I'm sure u can find it if u try

This is a great read but you can tell Wendy Leigh just has it in for Arnold and received most of her information from those who did as well (mainly Rick Wayne), she offered Barbara Outland $25,000 to put her name to what she said (which was fuck all) so who knows what she offered RW to exaggerate shit because he was jealous

You can get it for like $5-8 on Abebooks and that's shipped

However i am still interested in what is said in this book does anyone know where to get it cheap? Cheapest i could find on the net was over $50 shipped...or can anyone give us a break down on here on what was said in it

The Rick wayne book covers Weider and and general bodybuilding silliness from the late 60's- mid 80's. It's gossipy and apparently Wayne has a nice writing style. Check Ebay, copies show up in the $20-30 range, but I've been too cheap and not interested enough to buy a copy. If you're in the U.S., you might be able to get it on inter-library loan.

Another book that is said to be good is "The Iron Game" by David Carter, published in the late 70's, it covers all the nastiness of Venice Beach and California bodybuilding from that time. It is expensive used as well.

Yes, it's a good read. I wouldn't say it's written for the bodybuilding audience - there's nothing 'new' here you haven't heard before, but it's well written and a nice look at some of the personalities of a few years ago.

It's a positive book on bodybuilding and looks at it from an outsiders view. It also looks at different personalities in the sport. I really liked reading it especially since the previous BBing book i'd read was Flex Wheelers imaginary tales.

More i think about it who has $25,000 to splash about to some minor source for a book that wouldn't make that much? Obviously this was funded by the democrat party.
