Title: Massive 8.9-magnitude quake strikes Japan
Post by: Benny B on March 10, 2011, 11:09:45 PM

TOKYO— A massive 8.8-magnitude
earthquake struck off Japan's northeastern
coast Friday afternoon, shaking buildings in
Tokyo for several minutes and sending people
out into the streets.

Japanese television showed major tsunami
damage in northern Japan on Friday. Public
broadcaster NHK showed cars, trucks, houses
and buildings being swept away by tsunami in
Onahama city in Fukushima prefecture.

A tsunami warning was in effect for Japan, Russia, Marcus Island and the Northern Marianas. A tsunami watch has been issued for Guam, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia and Hawaii.

Smoke was seen rising from a port building engulfed in flames.

Reporters at the Associated Press Tokyo Bureau take shelter under a table Friday while a strong earthquake strikes Japan.

The agency says the quake struck at 2:46 p.m. Friday at a depth of 6 miles (10 kilometers), about 80 miles (125 kilometers) off the eastern coast, about 240 miles northeast of Tokyo.

In downtown Tokyo, large buildings shook violently and workers poured into the street for safety. TV footage showed a large building on fire and bellowing smoke in the Odaiba district of Tokyo.

Footage on national broadcaster NHK from their Sendai office showed employees stumbling around and books and papers crashing from desks.

Police and coast guard officials said they were assessing possible damage from the quake.

Several quakes had hit the same region in recent days, including a 7.3 magnitude temblor on Wednesday.

An 8.9-magnitude earthquake struck Japan's northeastern coast around 0546 GMT on Friday.

It caused a four-metre tsunami in the port city of Kamishi and its tremors shook buildings in the capital Tokyo, over 300 kilometres away.

Now Taiwan has issued a tsunami warning.

Al Jazeera's Laurence Lee has more.

I'm in Tokyo, so not so close to the sea.

The earthquakes were pretty bad, although i was joking earlier. I met an older grandpops on the street (about 70 years old, like musclecenter) who said he has never experienced such an earthquake....  :o :o

I'm fucking scared of aftershocks, not so much because of me but the family. Like i said, several earthquakes have hit the city, the earth trembles every 30 minutes or so...

I think we all will sleep in street clothes tonight to be ready to leave the house immediatly, if i can sleep at all that is....  :-X :-X :-X :-X

Well i think it was much less in Tokyo, the real damage occured in the north!

But it was the hardest earthquake ever to be recorded in Japan.

The big earthquake was long overdo, if THIS was it, i am really relieved. If an 8.8 earthquake hits Tokyo directly, i don't know what will happen.  :o :o

very few countries could take this kind of quake with such a low number of deaths (so far, lets hope its not more), i think the Japanese are quite prepared for this type of situation, Japanese people have been telling me that the country is long overdue a serious earthquake, like DK said if this it then the country has handled it well.

Yes, compared to China where 100.000s would die in such an earthquake, Japan took it well.

So far there are 40 something confirmed deaths, but i think there will be a few hundred overall, which is still a very small number.

As far as i know, there was a very bad quake in Tokyo in i think 1923, since hen Tokyo had not had a really big one, there was a bad quake in Kobe in 1995 but Tokyo seemed to always avoid the big one, Japanese people believed that since Tokyo hadnt had a massive quake since the 20's that it was overdue one, not sure why they thought that but im guessing someone predicted the movements in the earths plates perhaps happening after so many years, DK might know more

Yes, if it happened in China,India or Pakistan it would be far far worse, Japan did take it well, and im sure knowing the Japs they will be back to normal in no time ;)

I'm not an expert in this, but earthquakes seem to occur in patterns, the Tokyo region has one big earthquake about every 70 years if i am not mistaken.

The Great Kanto Earthquake was in 1923, and it killled over 100.000 people.
Everybody expected the next big one around the year 2000, so this one is 11 years later.

SCHMOE. DK. OTHERS,

I also am no earthquake expert but after living along the California San Andreas faultline for a good number of years I've heard that scientists are learning to become pretty damn accurate in forecasting forthcoming quakes.

I believe it is the geologists who dig down into the earth and have discovered that quakes along the San Andreas have occurred like clockwork over long term periods of time and most feel that the San Francisco Bay Area quake is long overdue and should stand by and expect a major jolt at any time.

Others say that the smaller quakes in SoCal will alleviate some of the earthquake severity expected up north.

I seem to recall some concern that many years from now, Los Angeles will be a suburb of San Francisco as the San Andreas Fault line moves SoCal seven inches further north each year.

DK, I am glad you are doing well and I know the feeling of helplessness during major shakes. I don't mean to be funny here but I find myself being a bit braver by jumping up and down while yelling shit like, "Rlde 'em, cowboy!" while the earth shakes. That might sound stupid but on a couple of occasions it did seem to calm down the kids a bit.

But I still had to change my shorts immediately after!

The quakes seem to be happening along the rim clockwise. I recall Chile had one, then New Zealand, now Japan. If it is coming undone like a zipper, then the coast along Russia, Alaska, and the WA,OR,CA coast is next.

Japan's quake toll set to exceed 1,000, world offers help
Reuters

TOKYO (Reuters) – A devastating tsunami triggered by the biggest earthquake on record in Japan looked set to kill at least 1,000 people along the northeastern coast on Friday after a wall of water swept away everything in its path.

Thousands of residents were evacuated from an area around a nuclear plant after radiation levels rose in the reactor, but there was no word on whether there had actually been a leak.

Underscoring grave concerns about the Fukushima plant some 240 km (150 miles) north of Tokyo, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the U.S. air force had delivered coolant to avert a rise in the temperature of the facility's nuclear rods.

The unfolding disaster in the wake of the 8.9 magnitude earthquake and 10-meter (33-feet) high tsunami prompted offers of help from dozens of countries.

China said rescuers were ready to help with quake relief while President Barack Obama told Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan the United States would assist in any way.

Stunning TV footage showed a muddy torrent of water carrying cars and wrecked homes at high speed across farmland near the coastal city of Sendai, home to one million people and which lies 300 km (180 miles) northeast of Tokyo. Ships had been flung onto a harbor wharf, where they lay helplessly on their side.

Boats, cars and trucks were tossed around like toys in the water after a small tsunami hit the town of Kamaichi in northern Japan. An overpass, location unknown, appeared to have collapsed and cars were turning around and speeding away. Japanese politicians pushed for an emergency budget to fund relief efforts after Kan asked them to "save the country," Kyodo news agency reported. Japan is already the most heavily indebted major economy in the world, meaning any funding efforts would be closely scrutinized by financial markets.

Domestic media said the death toll was expected to exceed 1,000, most of whom appeared to have drowned.

The extent of the destruction along a lengthy stretch of coastline suggested the death toll could rise significantly.

Tsunami warnings were issued across the Pacific but were later lifted for some of the most populated countries in the region, including Australia, Taiwan and New Zealand.

Even in a nation accustomed to earthquakes, the devastation was shocking.

"A big area of Sendai city near the coast, is flooded. We are hearing that people who were evacuated are stranded," said Rie Sugimoto, a reporter for NHK television in Sendai.

"About 140 people, including children, were rushed to an elementary school and are on the rooftop but they are surrounded by water and have nowhere else to go."

Japan has prided itself on its speedy tsunami warning system, which has been upgraded several times since its inception in 1952, including after a 7.8 magnitude quake triggered a 30-meter high wave before a warning was given.

The country has also built countless breakwaters and floodgates to protect ports and coastal areas, although experts said they might not have been enough to prevent disasters such as what happened on Friday.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano told people to stay in safe places as the cold deepened into the night. "Please help each other and act calmly," he told a news conference.

In Tokyo, residents who had earlier fled swaying buildings jammed the streets trying to make their way home after much of the city's public transportation was halted.

Many subways in Tokyo later resumed operation but trains did not run. People who decided not to walk home slept in office buildings.

"I was unable stay on my feet because of the violent shaking. The aftershocks gave us no reprieve. Then the tsunamis came when we tried to run for cover. It was the strongest quake I experienced," a woman with a baby on her back told television in northern Japan.

FIRES ACROSS THE COAST

The quake, the most powerful since Japan started keeping records 140 years ago, sparked at least 80 fires in cities and towns along the coast, Kyodo said.

Other Japanese nuclear power plants and oil refineries were shut down and one refinery was ablaze. Television footage showed an intense fire in the waterfront area near Sendai.

Auto plants, electronics factories and refineries shut, roads buckled and power to millions of homes and businesses was knocked out. Several airports, including Tokyo's Narita, were closed and rail services halted. All ports were shut.

The central bank said it would cut short a two-day policy review scheduled for next week to one day on Monday and promised to do its utmost to ensure financial market stability.

The disaster occurred as the world's third-largest economy had been showing signs of reviving from an economic contraction in the final quarter of last year. The disaster raised the prospect of major disruptions for many key businesses and a massive repair bill running into tens of billions of dollars.

The tsunami alerts revived memories of the giant waves which struck Asia in 2004.

Warnings were issued for countries to the west of Japan and across the Pacific as far away as Colombia and Peru, but the tsunami dissipated as it sped across the ocean and worst fears in the Americas were not realized.

The earthquake was the fifth most powerful to hit the world in the past century.

"The building shook for what seemed a long time and many people in the newsroom grabbed their helmets and some got under their desks," Reuters correspondent Linda Sieg said in Tokyo. "It was probably the worst I have felt since I came to Japan more than 20 years ago."

The quake surpasses the Great Kanto quake of September 1, 1923, which had a magnitude of 7.9 and killed more than 140,000 people in the Tokyo area.

The 1995 Kobe quake caused $100 billion in damage and was the most expensive natural disaster in history. Economic damage from the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami was estimated at about $10 billion.

Earthquakes are common in Japan, one of the world's most seismically active areas. (Writing by Dean Yates; Editing by John Chalmers; Singapore +65 6870 3815)

Japan quake-tsunami death toll likely over 10,000
By JAY ALABASTER, Associated Press

TAGAJO, Japan – The death toll in Japan's earthquake and tsunami will likely exceed 10,000 in one state alone, an official said Sunday, as millions of survivors were left without drinking water, electricity and proper food along the pulverized northeastern coast.

Although the government doubled the number of soldiers deployed in the aid effort to 100,000, it seemed overwhelmed by what's turning out to be a triple disaster. Friday's quake and tsunami damaged two nuclear reactors at a power plant on the coast, and at least one of them appeared to be going through a partial meltdown, raising fears of a radiation leak.

The police chief of Miyagi prefecture, or state, told a gathering of disaster relief officials that his estimate for deaths was more than 10,000, police spokesman Go Sugawara told The Associated Press. Miyagi has a population of 2.3 million and is one of the three prefectures hardest hit in Friday's disaster. Only 379 people have officially been confirmed as dead in Miyagi.

The nuclear crisis posed fresh concerns for those who survived the horrors of Friday's earthquake and tsunami, which hit with breathtaking force and speed, breaking or sweeping away everything in its path.

"First I was worried about the quake, now I'm worried about radiation. I live near the plants, so I came here to find out if I'm OK. I tested negative, but I don't know what to do next," Kenji Koshiba, a construction worker, said at an emergency center in Koriyama town near the power plant in Fukushima.

According to officials, at least 1,000 people were killed — including 200 people whose bodies were found Sunday along the coast — and 678 were missing in the disasters.

The U.S. Geological Survey calculated the initial quake to have a magnitude of 8.9, while Japanese officials raised their estimate on Sunday to 9.0. Either way it was the strongest quake ever recorded in Japan. It has been followed by hundreds of powerful aftershocks.

Teams searched for the missing along hundreds of miles (kilometers) of Japanese coastline, and hundreds of thousands of hungry survivors huddled in darkened emergency centers that were cut off from rescuers and aid. At least 1.4 million households had gone without water since the quake struck and some 2.5 million households were without electricity.

Japanese Trade Minister Banri Kaeda said the region was likely to face further blackouts and that power would be rationed to ensure supplies go to essential needs.

Large areas of the countryside remained surrounded by water and unreachable. Fuel stations were closed and people were running out of gasoline for their vehicles.

Public broadcaster NHK said around 380,000 people have been evacuated to emergency shelters, many of them without power.

In Iwaki town, residents were leaving due to concerns over dwindling food and fuel supplies. The town had no electricity and all stores were closed. Local police took in about 90 people and gave them blankets and rice balls but there was no sign of government or military aid trucks.

At a large refinery on the outskirts of the hard-hit port city of Sendai, 100-foot (30-meter) high bright orange flames rose in the air, spitting out dark plumes of smoke. The facility has been burning since Friday. A reporter who approached the area could hear the roaring fire from afar, and after a few minutes the gaseous stench began burning the eyes and throat.

At a small park near the refinery, trees and large swathes of grass were covered in thick black crude oil. Two large tanker trucks were jammed sideways among the trees, their gas tanks crumpled.

Mayumi Yagoshi, an office worker at the refinery, said she had taken the day off Friday because she had slipped and hurt her back.

"I was lucky, but I feel really bad. My mobile phone doesn't work and I have no idea what happened to everyone else," she said.

In the small town of Tagajo, near the hard-hit port city of Sendai, dazed residents roamed streets cluttered with smashed cars, broken homes and twisted metal.

Residents said the water surged in and quickly rose higher than the first floor of buildings. At Sengen General Hospital the staff worked feverishly to haul bedridden patients up the stairs one at a time. With the halls now dark, those that can leave have gone to the local community center.

"There is still no water or power, and we've got some very sick people in here," said hospital official Ikuro Matsumoto.

One older neighborhood sits on low ground near a canal. The tsunami came in from the canal side and blasted through the frail wooden houses, coating the interiors with a thick layer of mud and spilling their contents out into the street on the other side.

"It's been two days, and all I've been given so far is a piece of bread and a rice ball," said Masashi Imai, 56.

Police cars drove slowly through the town and warned residents through loudspeakers to seek higher ground, but most simply stood by and watched them pass.

Dozens of countries have offered assistance. Two U.S. aircraft carrier groups were off Japan's coast and ready to provide assistance.

Two other U.S. rescue teams of 72 personnel each and rescue dogs were scheduled to arrive later Sunday, as was a five-dog team from Singapore.

I'm not an expert in this, but earthquakes seem to occur in patterns, the Tokyo region has one big earthquake about every 70 years if i am not mistaken.

The Great Kanto Earthquake was in 1923, and it killled over 100.000 people.
Everybody expected the next big one around the year 2000, so this one is 11 years later.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_seismicity_in_Japan

Yes,that's what i know too...every 70 years or so they should have a big one.

Unfortunately it seem that the one that just happened in Sendai is NOT the one we are all expecting in Tokyo as the tectonic plates involved are different :( :( :( :( :(
