You're choosing 2 pretty tough languages to learn.
I speak a little German - it's a pretty complicated language for an English speaker to get their heads around in parts, even though a lot of th vocab is quite similar. Chinese grammar is very easy but the different tones can be tough, Japanese grammar is also pretty easy but the alphabet can be tough because there are three of them. I speak a little of both but not well.
Not that I speak them seriously, but I thought the latin based languages are fairly simple. French, for example, was much much easier to pick up than German has been (I've forgotten it all now though), and I've been told Spanish is also pretty straightforward.
Most important language I think would be Chinese. If you look at history, we've been through Spanish dominated centuries and we're just leaving the English dominated 20th century. China is waking up and developing quickly. Half of Australia is already Chinese owned. The 21st century is going to be where China makes it mark on the world and knowing the language can only help get you ready for that.
IMO.
-
Chinese is the best choice, but extremely difficult to learn as an adult.

If you're planning on living in the states then spanish is probably the way to go.
-
6.5 years of Spanish study, many moons ago, which would come back ok. Spent a month in Spain and was doing pretty well by the end of it, except in non-Castilian regions where I infuriated a few gung-ho provincials. I can get by in Japanese (no reading or writing) as long as my victim is patient (a 'lil linguistics humor there...) but can't even begin to eavesdrop or sound like anything other than a 6 year old Jap Corky. Also spent a very expensive month there. Thoroughly embarrassed myself in Italy over this last Christmas but had a good time trying, and the locals who were taking my money in one capacity or another always had a forgiving smile on their face.

"sonbatty" ROFL! And che, wot you think bout ma 1 week progress ma man?
I think we need a full body picture of you holding a newspaper from the day of the photo.
-
Yeah man, I can understand that it may be a bit hard just to take my word for it, but there wasn't any trickery involved, and I did indeed do in 7 days. I will update each and every 7 days wearing the same trousers and for ma next photo I will loop a black, blue, or green baseball cap through a loop in ma trousers to prove that yes indeed these pics are current and legit. So if you want, tell me which color cap to loop and I'll do it. And sorry, but I won't post a full body pic til I'm sitting at sub-7. Remember, this 1st Phase is all about getting lean, so there's no need for a full body pic since one's level of leaness can be easily judged by midsection pics.

Most important are English, Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic.
Then German, Russian, French, Cantonese, Japanese are all second tier languages.
If you're in the US. Learn Spanish. It is BY FAR the most important language to learn for Americans.
I'm studying Spanish right now. ALso speak a bit of Japanese, Korean, Thai and Mandarin, but just the basics.

I want to say something here. Many people say that Spanish and Portuguese are very similar languages and if you speak Spanish then Portuguese will be pretty easy and vice versa. Well, that's NOT true at all. I don't understand not even one word in Portuguese. And I know some Brazilians living >6 years over here and their Spanish sucks really really bad.

Well, it is not that much difficult to learn spanish when you have portuguese as your language, it is harder to learn french. Brazilians have a very strong accent, that is transmited to every language, other than portuguese, that they might learn and speak. Pretty much like the spanish people, they have an horrible english.

Chinese (Mandarin of course!) and Spanish.
As for the guy who said that the Japanese grammar is easy.... ::) ::) ::)
How many lessons did you have? Japanese grammar is one of the most difficult in the world, and i am German. Sure the first few weeks are easy because there is no plural, articles, gender or cases.
But then the Japanese language has honorific language, a total different passive and so on and so on....
There aren't also 3 alphabets, clearly speaking there are 3 alphabets (Hiragana, Katakana and Latin) and the Kanji of which you would need about 3000 to be considered of education, 2000 are what Japs learn in School.
If you want to learn a language for the goal and not for the fun of it, go for Chinese or Spanish.

that may be the case, but given the direction of the wind and other hopeful factors, might not need be for japanese anything.

¿Que tan difícil se te hizo aprender español?
Depends.
For me, spanish was pretty difficult because i was used to learning Japanese without any genders, plural and so on. Also the different use of past tense and so on was pretty annoying for me.
As i have already some experience with latin, french, english, german, italian the vocabulary was almost no problem.
-
I speaka lil bita Spanish...I believe Spanish and Portuguese should be the ones are most important to Americans. Being that a large percentage of our populace speaks Spanish (Hell, we have options on whether to press 1 for Spanish, 2 for English). Doesn't make sense that a lot of Americans cannot communicate with one another... And that we should build relations with the Latin American countries. The Western Hemisphere needs more unity, more cohesion... Also, Brazil is the largest Latin American country (duh)...furthermore...the Latin womens are better than all the others womens---you want to communicates with the good looking womens...

That would be me. I agree with everything you say, but then my dad was half Japanese and half Chinese and I grew up in a martial arts environment and now teach Japanese taiko drumming - so I've kind of been surrounded by the language for awhile. Maybe that made it feel easier to pick up (and I don't speak it well, I know that). But grammatically I still find German the most difficult language I've tried to learn.
And I live in Schwaben. I have no idea what these fuckers are saying half the time.

Have to agree with DK about japanese. The first ten lessons were super easy but suddenly it goes in a completely different direction; actually, you can really feel the link between language and culture. So i must say I gave it up. I speak French of course, English, Persian and I used to be almost fluent in Italian as i was going there 4/5 times a year. Now, I can barely understand it.
