Is at a jackpot of $312,000,000.00. Would you take the cash option of $198,000,000.00 or go for the 26 year payout of a steady $12,000,000.00? That's a tough call! The temptation to blow huge portions if you took the one time payout would be pretty tough to resist, but the security of knowing that you will be netting almost $8mm a year for the next 26 years is pretty satisfying! This is obviously for the Getbiggers who do not already net $8mm per year.
-
Yeah because receiving 198 million dollars would not provide enough financial "security" ::)
-
One shot payout.
.....gonna make serious intrest on that much money in the bank anyway.
-
Of course it would, but then sitting there everyday thinking, "Well if I invest $40mm and make 10%....", before long one/I might have blown $198mm! I would go with the cool $12mm every year.

I'd be dead by the time I blew all that cash.
.....would of had a great time along the way :)
-
I'd take the 26 yr pay out .. easy peasy choice for me to make ... no need IMO to get a huge lump sum .. $1 M a year is a lot of money so more than that is sounding great to me

I agree, I would go hog wild buying cheap real estate, and then when I sobered up, I would be broke with a bunch of real estate I cannot sell for the next 5-10 years.
-
I'd take it all up front.this way when I die I can leave whats leftover to family and friends.
....the payments stop coming when you die.
-
i wouldnt know what to do with so much money lol.

That is shitty, I did not know that. Well then up front for me then.
-
getting that much money is no guarantee for happyness either
-
I'd take the lump sum payout....
However, i don't have any chance to win the lotto...I never play....
-
Why let them earn interest on your money?
You take the payout, without question. Even if you averaged only a 2% gain each year, you make more than the payout.
-

same here, id by realestate and have hookers help me paint and video tape it all
-
id also pay some people in the know to attain the knowledge of the mysteries of the sphinx and be shown the master texts
-
I'd take the one time payout. Most of these morons can't handle it bc they don't come from money.
-
Lump sum. No brainer. That's a lot of FuckU money.

some very rich people manage to end up broke its unbelievable what kind of morons this world inhibits.

This is completely incorrect. The payments are guaranteed and you can have them continue paying to a trust or someone can inherit the payments. You can transfer the payments to anyone at anytime.
There are companies out there that will buy people out of their payments. Say you have 10 years and $1 mill per year still coming, they'll offer you $3 million up front to take over the payments.
1.Mega Million lottery and most others can be inherited in annuity payout form. So for estate tax purposes, it is really important whose name is on the ticket when you claim the prize. If you do it right, you can set up a trust before you claim the prize, making the trust as the owner, and work toward getting the money out of your estate.

Don't you think you'll be giving a lot to your family and friends before you die ? Anytime I've read about lottery winners they always say people line up with their hands out wanting some "help" ... I'm not keen on putting a huge sum of money into a bank that will make profit .. sure the interest would be an advantage .. but the banks don't just babysit your money for free .. I'd much rather choose who and what I spend my money on and not just allow someone else to gain from it

Esp poor people with a low IQ who became rich quickly, like lotto winners, drug dealers and rappers. If you can't deal with wealth, you don't deserve it.

Someone else will gain on it either way: either the big bad bank or the big bad government. On both options, one of these makes the money off your money, but only you gain maximum earnings on the lump sum. It really shouldn't even be a question.

I would buy Canada and turn it into a "Crocodile Dundee" type of environment, but with Hockey Sticks too.

I would like to think that I'm a nice enough guy that I would take care of family and friends before I die.
198mil is a fokin lot of $.I wouldn't be able to spend all that before I die so I'd have to leave a will.
....and you'd better take the lump payment...do you think you're gonna have me live on an allowance ??? >:(

i think its a shame they give away that perverse amount of money. how cant they just make 198 people very happy with one million?
-
In 26 years, inflation will have cut the value of the payout by more than 2. 198 millions can be invested in a very secure way with a return rate around 8-9%. The payout is for pussies who'd rather let someone else take responsabilities and also the real profits.
-

People choose to buy the tickets.this may sound absurd but one millon would just put alot of people in debt by the time they spent it!

That's how they roll in the U.S.; on the long term they spend more than they actually earn.

One time payout.
Who knows what the dollar will be worth down the road...possibly nothing.
Also, what is the guarantee the lotto will still have anything to pay to you?

That is true too! Perhaps the one time payout is the way to go. I can get pretty carried away with spending though. I like to think I have learned my lessons, but that would be an all new kind of money. I could go up and down the street buying all the buildings next to the people I dislike and opening taverns that run from 7a.m. -3a.m., all with some sort of Germanic theme and beautiful college girls wearing lederhosen, then not let those people in! :D

198 mil at 2% gives ya about 4 mil a year in interest, compounded over 30 years you will have 358,649,593.65 used this calc to get to this http://www.moneychimp.com/calculator/compound_interest_calculator.htm
obviously you will spend some money etc but Id say grab the money, because if you dont and in 5 years you want to cash out a lump sum it will cost ya a ton of money to get upfront money from places like jg wentworth.

wonder how many people said that prior to coming into money then when they got it they changed.
i've been in a 10M home, dont need that much house, have no clue why people go buck wild when they get money. 124M? my folks and sisters are comfortable to death. i'd pretty much travel. if i wanted to go to sweden...i'd rent a house for 6 mths there and enjoy the culture and women. that's pretty much my biggest expenditure. i'd move around alot and play it normal, buy 2-3 houses in areas i like but they wouldnt be more than 700k or so a piece. a 1M house is alotta of house, dont need that much space. obivously...work with advisers for long investment goals. no jews like bennie, that's for sure or i'm back to square one.

I have a friend and his wife who won the California Lotto twice within a matter of a few months. I don't know how many millions but it was millions and except for the following .... his lifestyle did'nt change at all.
Once things settled down a bit he took 20 of his best friends to Las Vegas for a 5 night stay at the Encore Hotel/Casino and gave them each $1,000 a day to gamble with.
He paid all the expenses including the flights to LV, the meals in LV (most of those meals were within the Wynn Hotels' best restaurants), a side helicopter flight to to the Grand Canyon with a buffet lunch served on one of the canyon rims way out in the middle of no-where, the top Strip Shows .. Ka, Mystere, "O", La RIve, etc., etc.
Most of the guys lost their $1,000 a day playing Craps while they were loaded and lost that daily bankroll within 20 minutes of play. (Unfortunately the dice were NOT loaded but the Players were.)
But a few of the wives stuck to the Blackjack tables (and the Spa) and did pretty well.
And then one afternoon we found a WAR table at the Bellagio, so the wives played WAR just like most of us did as kinds and hit a winning streak while the guys once again lost big time at the Craps table (except for one player who had no idea what he was doing so he just played the Hard Ways and managed to more than double his money .... way more than double !).
It was a great time .... so I think I'll do the same thing when I win the Mega-Millions providing I don't go broke in the process.
I'd definitely take it all right away and do some investing and purchase a couple of prime real estate properties .,,,, because it's eventually gonna return someday providing that the San Andreas does'nt get too damn active.
Other than the above tour to LV, the winners' lifestyle hasn't noticeable changed at all.
-
I could get a lifetime's worth of a gym membership with that kinda money...

I could have 9,9 million autographed pictures of me with Lou Ferrigno!! Maybe I could persuade him to round it up to 10 M!

The irony of it all. It's like you win millions in a lottery and then you go gambling for more in losing games. It's like you haven't won enough. What do you reasonably stand at winning in a casino? Maybe 50K tops if you are a serious player until they bar you but not worth the effort if you have millions. Far more better endeavors, but try to explain that to a person who won the lottery twice...ain't gonna happen.

The 198 million cash option is for sure the way to go. However the government takes 25% right off the top. And most states take their cut(between 5-10%). Also come tax time, your now at the top tax bracket. So you will owe the government another 10% on top of the 25% they already took when the lotto office scratched you the check. So that 198 million cash option really is about 45%. But were still talking about 120 million take home.
If you think you're gonna just give family members millions of dollars, think again. You can do it, but they will have to pay taxes on anything over 12 grand a year gift(taxes you already paid on) Sure there are ways around it(trusts and what not) however you are forever REDFLAGGED by the IRS. You will find out real quick by your attorney's just how hard it is to give away money and not get killed tax wise.

I was thinking I would just hire them on to work for me in real estate, and everybody's salary would be $250,000 per year. Hours of 11-2:30. Then it is bar time!

lolz. ya there are ways around things. That kind of money takes on a lot of responsibility. Helping people live on easy street comes with a lot of baggage. And drugs and alcohol almost always show their ugly heads.

The cash option of 198 is before taxes. I think you'd lose around 40% to taxes? Still and insane amount, but they shouldn't be allowed to advertise it as $312 million if it's really considered to be worth $198 million.
-
I only plan on getting what I give. Hard work. Don't gamble.
I can't even conceive what it would be like to "win" or receive money through any means other than pure hard work.
