Title: For all the heavy smokers
Post by: DroppingPlates on April 07, 2011, 05:27:10 AM
What would be more effective against smoking, this Australian law to print pics like these on sigarette packs or to double their price?

There's been research about what's effective. These pictures are not. Raise the price is effective and limiting the number of selling points.

In theory a good idea but probably also a great stimulus for the black market.
I can't say what's the mental impact of these pics on smokers since I don't smoke, but I find them pretty disgusting.

When the warnings were put on the packets some years ago, people shoved them in those leather boxes. After a few month you didn't see those anymore. people get used to warnings and filthy pictures. That's why telling people they get lung cancer doesn't work as well; everybody already knows that.

They've got those pics on decks in Canada. Cost, I'd say, is a more effective deterrent.

of course if you price them at 100 bucks it would be 100% effective (as far as regular markets goes). In Brazil we have this shit in every cigarette pack and once it worked for me (pic of a dead guy who just puked some green goose) but Im not a big fan of cigs in the first place.

That's the power of addiction. To me those pics are fucking scary, but the serious smokers seem to laugh about or deny them.

two things caused me to quit cold turkey:

1.  the banning of smoking in all indoor spaces and within 15 ft of a public doorway (wtf, i live/work in Chicagoland, there's a public doorway every 5 feet, i have to drive out to Indiana to smoke)
2.  having a kid.  when i had my kid, i didn't want to be a negro who smokes around his kids, so the day my kid was born, i had 3 cigarettes in my pack.  i smoked them right in a row and threw out the pack and haven't had one since.

i'm not gonna preach here, smoke yourself to death if you want, but i just didn't want to pay others to poison me.  smoker's breath used to be cool 15 years ago, but now you just smell like a doucher.

True - but maybe it'll freak the kids out enough to at least nag mum/dad to stop. No-one wants to frighten their children. In Australia, cigarettes are the first thing hit if more taxes are needed. They already cost a lot more than most other places in the world (apparently), but it doesn't seem to be discouraging that many people.

I work in a cancer center and see death literally everyday...still about 25% of the people working here smoke.  There is an absolute denial that it will not happen to them until that fateful diagnosis day comes!  I love the comments, I know a guy who lived to be hundred and smoked everyday, but you never hear, I knew an eight year old that died of second hand smoke with colon cancer.   :-[

How do you prove your colon cancer has been caused by second hand smoke anyway.

Pretty simple really.   How did they find out small cell lung cancer was caused by cigarette smoke?  The type of mutated cell that started growing abnormally will have the same origin, just as a metastatic disease in the body will contain that same type of tissue in the mutated DNA stands.

This is quiet simplified of course but is it in a nut shell.

Make them $20 a pack and tax the shit out of them like Australia does and that will get people to quit real quick.

Do things like this enough = more black market sales. People are still going to do drugs if they don't like the packaging they might just go elsewhere.

There are many kinds of cancer you can get by 2nd hand smoke, but colon cancer isn't one of them.
Actually, it's the only kind of cancer you see less in smokers.....Weird but true.

As anyone of us, we all have abnormal cells, and what triggers them to start multiplying is truly up to that person's vulnerability. Coffee, certain chemicals that we are exposed to, etc., but to say never I would never say.  Too many anomalies and unexplained cases out there to say never.  To say the little girl was misdiagnosed, I do not work at that particular center and only read about her case.  As rare as it seems, it seemed more rare to me that an 8 year actually had colon cancer, would you not agree, that this would be an extremely rare case and the cause I would imagine could also be rare?  This was this center's assessment and with the reputation of this particular institution that it was researched at, it would be hard for anyone to disagree, but this is Get Big, so nothing should be surprising.   :-\

Yup. I know some that go to local Indian reserves for the 200 smokes in a bread-bag-sized zip-lock for $15-$20. Apparently, they taste like shit, but they're cheap smokes.   :-\
