Title: I am in the market for a TV
Post by: GroinkTropin on April 26, 2011, 08:48:17 PM
I know, I know-

I have not turned pro yet, naturally.

I have shitty credit.

So all of that aside, I want something above 42 inches, plasma preferably (I think)

Said TV will be used primarily for playing video games, watching sports in HD and movies in Blu-Ray.

Trying to keep price around $500

Advice appreciated.

And yes better credit would help, but I have cash so it's not an issue.

Spend the money on steroids.

Maybe.

If I can get in the gym more consistently than three times a week we will see.

Spend the money on steroids.

You don't need steroids. I saw a guy at the gym who was a massive 160 pounds of skinny fat glory.  I overheard him telling his training partner that he doesn't take No2 products because he doesn't want to get too big. Based on his physique he knows his stuff.

I am working with a credit repair type place. Shouldn't be long as most of my debt is 7-8 years old or very close to it. Maybe 2k to fix the rest and I will be on my way.

Lesson learned. Having shitty credit sucks :(

Pretty sure I do not need financial advice from you.

And FWIW I believe Cash is King in the new American Economy. I do not want to finance anything, especially not a TV, so my credit has nothing to do with this.

How much debt do you have? $500 should be able to take a good chunk out of your debt.

Seriously, no “place” can “repair” your credit.  We are not talking about mending a broken vase.  Pay down your debt!  That is the only way to rebuild your credit.  Once you do so, you will get offers for new credit, or you can obtain a secured credit card; use it and pay off the charges regularly.

When it comes to credit, the only escape from your bad choices in the past is to make good choices in the present and future.  Your first good choice must be to pay off your debts.  Trying to excuse or ignore existing debt because it is old (“most of my debt is 7-8 years old”) shows that you have not learned your lesson.   :'(

Mike, how old are you? You say that your "Debt" is from 7 years ago or so...so, i take it that you were 18 years old and kept charging your Credit Card/s and neglected to pay your bills, i am somewhere in the ball park?

Pretty much. I have old debt that has haunted me for years.

For the most part they were palty 250 dollar credit cards that some asshole collection agency now thinks will net them 800 plus.

And Bay, I WOULD settle and have offered to. However the agencies handling this shit are complete assholes and they will offer my random settlements but nothing in writing and no timeline as to when they will report to the credit agencies.

I am no sucker, I know damn well without a deal in writing they could take my settlement payment as just a partial payment on the entire balance.

I am not lying here- I HAVE TRIED paying off my debt and not gotten anywhere.

People make it sound like collection agencies would love to work with you and that has not been my experience with them.

As a matter of principal NO I am not paying more than I spent in the first place. If I spent 250 and didn't pay on time, I will pay 250 but I am not paying some magical number a collection agency feels like I should pay. They can fuck off and die for all I care.

this is why you have bad credit, retard.  it's called interest.  man up and pay or you will forever be fucked because of your own stupidity.

you have no excuse.

i have never made more than about $40k/yr yet:

i have paid off every credit card bill completely every single month.

i have gone into debt for one house and two cars and have paid off every payment completely and on time, if not early.

i get credit card offers up the yin yang and my credit score is insane.

and im only 27.

..but im jewish so i was born knowing what to do with money.  ;D

So, you are now working with a Credit Agency that "Helps you" and i am pretty sure that they charge you money, correct? So, instead of just paying off the bills you choose to give money away to a agency that "Helps" you re-gain your credit back, right?  ??? Why not dump the agency and just pay off your debt in increments. Ohh yea, about the $250 you owe, it's turned into $800 and counting.  :D Just pay the debt off.

Mike, ask yourself what is more important, My credit which will influence your future. So, said T.V. will be used for video games and Blu-Ray movies....sigh....averag e Blu-Ray movie runs around $20 and the average Video Game runs around $65 including tax. So, how about cutting those out and use the money that you spend on movies, Video Games,..etc. paying your old debts?  ???

You claim that you know....do you know that every day that you ignore or stop paying your bills that you will become even more in debt.  :-\ Now, i understand that you wanna watch Blu-Ray movies, so how about joining Net Flix and only paying about $8 a month.  8)

You fail to realize that part of the reason collection agencies will settle is because they pay pennies on the dollar. And I have suffered enough to offset the settlement. What I mean is, you get to settle for less because the shit credit score is a bad punishment in and of itself, you cannot do anything with bad credit! Unless you have a good source of income, which as a full time student I do not have.

Panasonic has some great prices on Plasma (and great quality too) - they are one of the few companies REALLY pushing the technology!

Don't get a 3D model, in a few years there will be glasses-free models out!

If you were to get an LCD (or an LED), I would say Samsung or Sony!

And I personally think and LED with 120 Hz refresh rate would be best for video games, just my opinion!

I have suffered because I have to pay cash up front for anything that I buy. I cannot buy a car I cannot pay cash for, and can not lease most apartments. If shit hits the fan, I have only my savings as a backup, I can not live on credit for any length of time.

In all honesty I never realized what having good credit meant until I lost it. And my decision to only settle is based on the fact that one should never pay more than one has to. If you KNOW a collection agency will eventually settle, and can afford to wait, a smart man settles. They pay 8-10 cents on the dollar, just how much profit should I pump into these worthless fucks pockets?

Bottom line- a number of places HAVE agreed to settle, and I would have sent the check, yet they refused to provide for me a deal in writing. Also there is no point in paying a debt unless you know for a fact that the agency will report to the reporting agencies that you have paid, thus giving you back your good credit. If said collection agency refuses to provide a date, IN WRITING, that means they will report when they are good damn ready to do it. Could be years.

Point is- I want my deals in writing, and I want to know when I am getting my good name back, IN WRITING. The collection agencies seem to think anyone trying to settle must NEED credit and thus they have the upper hand, and they attempt to be assholes whenever they can be. They are scum trust me. If they would worth with me, I would have all my debt paid off already.

And FWIW I haven't had a regular job in nearly a year now as I am a full time student.

Insignia 42" for $429

Nice. You are saving 40 dollars on jeans by wearing some shitty 3 year old ones. And you won't spend 20 or 30 bucks on a watch.

But you will buy a 500 dollar TV. An item that is a shitty investment with low resale value. An item you definitely don't need.

 Winning  ::)

If you were really frugal you would just spend 50 bucks and get an old tv.
What's wrong with that? Why do you need to get brand new? You trying to impress somebody?

By the way. If you were really a "humble Christian" you wouldn't be on a bodybuilding board like this, and you wouldn't be named Methyl Mike. You seem young and confused.

I am really not. I know very little about tv's, but I hear plasma's have much better blacks and refresh rates, though my info can easily be incorrect.

I want whatever is best for the money that I have, and that looks like a great deal.

Can anyone else chime in? This is a big purchase for me, I want to get it right.

I've personally always been an LCD/LED man myself (and think I always will be)..

First of all how much sun light does your room bring in?... if it brings in a lot then Plasma is a bad idea as it will just get washed out and you're better with an LCD... if the room is pretty dim in general then Plasma is alright....

Plasma is definitely better in regards to the refresh rate, which means motion will be much more fluid, especially in fast action scenes and during fast moving sports!

The deeper blacks is a bit questionable, some new LCD's and LED's will smoke Plasmas with the contrast ratio, DARKER BLACKS and WHITER WHITES!

LCD is a brighter Crisper picture, Plasma may seem a bit more dim (If you walk into a TV store you'll be able to identify the plasmas right away when hung up nex to the LCD's and LED's)...

LCD for the win!

Get the Sharp - its a good deal!

And as an FYI - my main TV is a Samsung 46" LCD 1080p, 120 Hz!

Get the Sharp - its a good deal!

Why are you encouraging the kid to waste his money? You should be talking him out of it.

Dude says he can afford both paying off his debt and buying a TV?

Not my business to judge him.  Nor am I encouraging.... he wanted advice on a TV, and I'm giving him advice on a TV

And as an FYI - my main TV is a Samsung 46" LCD 1080p, 120 Hz!

Where did you get your samsung and how much did you pay?

Sounds like exactly what I am going for. And the closer to 50" the better.

To be sure no one on this forum will be talking me into or out of any decisions I make in life. Well, one person, but he only contributed to a decision I was already in the process of making. But he definitely helped steer me on the right path, and I tip my hat to him for taking the time to do it.

I found a big TV outside for free a few months ago. Works perfect. Didn't spend a dime.

If you're a working class sucker, just admit it and live on budget. That's what I did and now my bank account is growing well.

Big Ach obviously comes from a rich family and he seems a bit spoiled. He doesn't know what it's like to be in debt and earn every dime yourself. He doesn't know what the broke niggah struggle is all about.

I am a humble Christian, I hardly every buy anything. I do not own a watch and have the same jeans I bought three years ago. Try again...

Where to begin?  The unpaid debts?  Making excuses for the unpaid debts?  The bad credit?  The attempt to buy $100 earbuds?  If you have to tell people that you are a "humble Christian" then you are not. ::)

Life is too short to not have a nice tv.  When you're on your deathbed, you don't want to be thinking, "Man I wish I had had a great credit score like that overbearing gay dude on getbig."  You want to be thinking, "Man, I didn't get to travel/do much, but I got to see the world through a wonderful tv and also had some great times playing video games on my awesome tv."

That is exactly what he will be thinking, because if he had that great score he would have enjoyed frolicking on the beach (with muscle men in thongs) instead of watching it on a big screen.  Enjoy your TV . . . I'm off to Oahu--again!  8)

Realize that I am in school precisely so that I can do those things.

I am not going to be able to take multiple trips to exotic places just because I have a nice credit score.

Get real...

Don't give in to the credit score bullies, just keep racking up debt and then go off the grid... maybe on Oahu.

You're a poor college kid with bad credit buying expensive electronics? Hmm...

You're taking a lot of hard classes which take up a lot of time to study for to get those As. How are you going to take time to study and watch tv/play video games?

How are you getting student loans with bad credit?

By the way, you have shitty credit now and it's going to take another 2 years MINIMUM to rebuild it to a decent score ...after you pay off your shit.

Unless you're in a major that is in high demand right now with a more or less guaranteed job when you graduate WITH a halfway decent salary, you are fucked for the next few years as far as getting any sort of loan for a house, car...etc.

I always say that a high GPA and a college degree does not make a person smart... you are another example to support my point.

You have to realize that some people (collection agencies) are going to ALWAYS get the last laugh ... pay those fuckers.

don't listen to all these moralizing old men.  You're young, have fun!  By the time you're in your 50s like these old farts you'll have built your credit score back up.

To an audiophile $100 earbuds are a steal, I usually spend $3-400 on earbuds and headphones!

Every so often, you feel like you deserve a reward, so you buy yourself something. Of course you justify your purchase, that's what everyone does especially when they buy stuff they really cannot afford or actually could live without. And maybe the 42" plasma television will keep you entertained and save you spending money you don't have on going out partying.

Still....you have unpaid old credit. As others have already told you, spend you money on fixing your credit. Sure bill collectors are assholes, but you are an asshole too because you obviously didn't live up to your original credit agreement. You mention some of the old credit is nearly 8 years old. I assume this means you think it is alright to just let it go because it will be off your record anyway. Wrong! It will be off your credit report, but you should still honor your agreement to pay. Folks with and attitude like yours cost the rest of us money because retailers simply up the price of goods to cover these kinds of loses.

Several folks have posted advice to forget about the bad credit. In fact they suggest one rack up more bad credit if they can. Live in the moment, they say. When you are an old fart (like me) you'll have magically rebuilt your credit anyway. Interestingly enough, there are plenty of old folks with bad credit too.

Believe it or not, sooner or later, everyone pays the piper. One of the reasons the economy tanked is because people lived on borrowed money which they couldn't pay back. I know folks, young and old who borrowed against their homes in amounts which not only exceeded their ability to repay the loans but amount that exceeded the value of their property. Now they are either living in their cars, a shelter or if they are lucky some lack luster rental.

Pretty sure I do not need financial advice from you.

And FWIW I believe Cash is King in the new American Economy. I do not want to finance anything, especially not a TV, so my credit has nothing to do with this.

Cash is king if you want to get robbed via hyperinflation... :'(
