Title: So... had a bird die in my hands yesterday
Post by: Stark on May 30, 2011, 10:08:42 AM
Pretty weird experience, now you all gonna say its just a bird, but neverless I never had anything actually die in my hands.

I drove home in the morning after I went quickly to the shop, see this bird flapping on the side of the road, park the car and walk back since I'm just unable to see an animal hurt.
Pick the bird up its a blackbird, hes hurt bad I can tell either both his legs are broken or more likely his back, right than I knew there isn't much I can do since I am a qualified zookeeer I know the difference between there is hope and that's it - he wasn't even grabbing my fingers.
So I had two choices, 1) I can leave it at the side of the road 2) I can take it home or kill it quick.
So I took it home, I have no problem killing animals but I have seen birds hit a window/car full force and they come around again, so I took it home.
Coming home I can see he's getting worse, eyes closed and he is breathing real heavy, so I put it in a box with a towel inside and another on top to give him a bit of darkness.

After five minutes I checked the box and he was still alive and in pain, so I made the decision to just hold it in my hands, after a few seconds when I picked him up - he was just breathing now no movement he spasm real hard and than he slowly died.

It was weird and very sad even if it was just a bird, I never thought I feel like that, its a completely different experience to - finding something dead.
I cannot even imagine what it must feel like to have a friend or other person die in your arms.

Was he just gone? Like that?
Or did he drift away, that's what happened to the bird i could litteraly see and feel the life go away, heart slowed down and no more breathing than the head goes slowly limp.

When I was but a child, I witnessed a dog being struck by a car.  It was hurled to the side of the road and I did my best to comfort it in its last minutes.  Being with a relative when they pass is even more emotionally draining.  Was with my father and my grandmother.   To see the strength literally drained from the individual whom I will always regard as the most powerful man in my life is humbling to say the least.

Found him in the backyard, having some kind of seizure, then breating strangly. I picked it up and put it in the back of my car, to the vet. When I arrived there I lifted him out of the car and he literally gasped his last breath. Vet suggested to do an autopsy, but I would have to drive 150kms to have it and it was 30degrees C, so I just burried him. Was very weird because it went so quickly...

Im the same with animals, I could see someone knocked over by a car in the street and not think much of it, if it was a cat or a dog Id feel it alot more.

Its weird how you just feel it that its close, I mean my wife was standing beside me and I said... nearly done, and a second later he died, you can somewhat see it.

I grew up on a farm. Life and death is a part of life.

Saw numerous still born calfs (dead at birth)
Pigs being slaughtered and butchered
Hawks snatching up chickens
Our dog fucking up chickens

Cat getting killed by a coyote...

Death is sad but it's inevitable

I have seen most of these myself,
Slaughtered a wilderbeast in the zoo I worked
Saw loads and killed a lot of rats etc.

But actually having something slowly die is somewhat different, its not the - you are here now you're gone kind thing
its peacfull and a very sobering experience mixed with strangely being very very sad.

As a kid I was much more shocked by animals being killed than people. Must be because animals are always innocent, as are little children.

I haven't seen a lot of dead people, never seen a person actually die as in being right there, not that I want to see it, but I think over the years we have made death something obscene, something we should not talk or think about - so we have to look forever young and be young so we can pretend it ain't going to happen to us.
Were I just do it the other way around, I think a lot about death I am interested in death and so far I am not depressed or suicidal but I have my moments were I am not that scared anymore.

exactly.....my daughter's gerbil Homey died in my hand, same exact, shook violently and tensed every muscle in it's little body and then gone.....sobering is a good word.

When a loved one passes, for several moments thereafter it is as though the air itself is taken from the room.  Trust me... It gives one pause to one wonder at the sheer wonder of life itself as well as to reflect on what might be after.

I, being atheist think there is nothing.  But I will not belittle those (i.e., true Christians) that genuinely hold fast to the hope of a resurrection with loved ones.

To do so would not be atheistic, but rather assholistic, if you will.   At once both inhuman and inhumane.

As a doctor (I really am one) I've seen people actually die. Usually you see it coming, there is a last spark of life and then they stop breathing. It's not like in the movies that they suddenly turn their head or close their eyes. They just become motionless. Most of the time it's not ugly or terrible at all, except when it's a child or a young healthy person...

It is not a "peaceful" look, but instead one of emptiness.  The vessel is void of what made it that person.  Perhaps this is why you will hear people comment on the body and not the person.  When the last breath is exhaled and the heart beats no more, the color is stripped away and a pallor of grey sweeps over the body.  They are gone...

I suspect you know this all too well, sir.

its fucking weird, when the life is out of a person it suddenly is not that person anymore that you knew. also with my grandmother, when she was dead and prepared for the funeral service (dont know how you say that in english) i couldnt even recognise her anymore, as if the person was mistakenly changed for another.

Since some have begun quotes on life and death.  If I may...

"Why is it we rejoice at a birth and grieve at a funeral?  It is because we are not the person involved."  - Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain)

"Consummatum est" - Jesus of Nazareth at his death (or at least the Latin translation).

This is weird I had the same thing yesterday though the bird was not injured, just young.  He got lost and I was flying around indoors in my workplace, I noticed he'd given up and landed on the floor. So I picked it up (didn't even struggle) and took it outside next to the trees and gave it a flick.   I can out to my car 10 minutes later and it was next to my car on it side dying. Felt like a waste of my time.

I was at Mom's bedside when she passed...almost all of you have this in front of you.

Stark, a week ago...I was leaving work...I was behind a school bus, well it had stopped at the bottom of a bridge, right after a traffic light. It wasn't a scheduled stop...Well, we were wondering why it stopped, so I went in the other lane...the busdriver had stopped for a big ass pond turtle that was in the middle of the road. I did something that was uncharacteristic of me...I kept going, as I was leaving I saw that th busdriver had got gotten out and was going to move the pond turtle---even though he had a backup behind him. I thought about going back, but didn't...

As I got home, I saw that there was another pond turtle on a residential street...so, I got out, picked him up, and put him in the car. I was taking him to a nearby pond. It was a Painted Slider...it had a dirty carapace, but a beautifully colored plastron. I took him to the pond, and I felt better thar Mr. turtle wasn't roadkill.

My dog died in my arms, probably poisoned we think. It's not nice.

same. Best dog I ever had too.

My beloved dog Keesha died in my arms.  It was very hard, but I had been preparing myself mentally for a couple of years.  She was 1 week shy of 19.

That was nothing compared to holding my brother as he took his last breath.  :'(

Oh well, it wasn't going to chirp Beethoven's Ninth Symphony anyway...

judging by some of the warped and disturbing shit you post... i'm sure it won't be to long before you experience and enjoy death by your own hand.

I saw a box turtle that had been run over by a trashtruck...it's carapace was cracked and it was bleeding...chances are it's back was broken, due to it being part of it's carapace. It was still alive. I picked it up and put it in the woods...

You are a pussy who has never seen the brutal realities that exist outside whatever spoiled rich fist world country you live in.

Fly out to India and walk around for a while. You'll probably start crying at the abject poverty and suffering you see.

Go visit some poor countries and see what capitalism does to "those other people" who you don't see. It ain't pretty at all.

You shouldnt relocate the turtles.  Just move them safely off the road.  Research this a little.  I thought to relocate too, but evidently you're not supposed to.

Not strange at all, your dog probably treated you the best, never told you to go to bed, to eat more vegetables, that you are too loud, and all the other stuff parents tell their kids.

With your dog, you most likely have only positive memories, and you cared for him, as opposed to your father cared for you.
