Re: MuscleMayhem.com
Just read a thread on SC saying that MM is no longer in business.
Can anyone (Insider?) shed light on this development?
-
After trying to access the site, the domain doesn't seem to be up any longer...
-
It was given 6 kidney transplants over its lifetime. The government finally said no more. And it died a painful death.

Believe it or not, those titans of online commercial development Goodrum and Matt C have bought it.
Vince let it slip here two weeks ago.

Always thought Matt C was a decent guy until I saw his hair cut. Now I can never talk to him again :-\

MM is history.......no longer exists.

Wow, I had no idea. That really sucks, because many others and I wrote some brilliant shit there in the years when it was at its peak.
Censorship killed that fucker, though, exactly as most of us sadly predicted.
Damn, I should've copied all my genius. lol

The fact the it died gives a lot of insight into the mental illness of Chads brain. There's no reason whatsoever why that site couldn't have progressed and moved forward other than simple ego and mental illness.

There was a time when Mayhem ran a CLOSE second to GetBig and both were dominant forces in bodybuilding. If they'd maintained the forum as it was instead of trying to become a 'store', they'd likely still be just as popular today.

It will be better come the Olympia. At least that is what my gay barber tells me. I watched some Hollywood movies and got the impression that benders have a better sense of style. Is that true?

Wait, so you're saying Goodrum purchased musclemayhem.com?
If so, he truly did OWN them at the end...

I offered Chad's secretary 3500 dollars to buy Muscle Mayhem last year and she told me that they already had a buyer which was obviously a lie. I had been trying to buy it for almost 3 years now
I intended to rework the main page into a general bodybuilding news site, update the Vbulletin License and turn off the ability to upload files and delete the uploaded fileswhich was the reason why it was costing Chad about 400 dollars a month.

Yea, that was one thing that me and you agreed on. Too much censorship and moderators like Massive G that abused their powers. If I had bought the site, I would have unbanned Adonis, Mr Magoo, and McFarland, booted out the moderators, and brought back the good times that made it the awesome site it is when it started in 2002.
Muscle Mayhem was in fact No 1 for the first 2 years as Ron still had that shitty forum program running but eventually the censorship and the Slap Chop Cock Politics caused it to fall off until it was just costing them money to run it. Chad started the EFitStore to bring in revenue but he simply didn't get the right people to build it because it was a clusterfuck. Eventually, he just abandoned it.
Muscle Mayhem still has all the archived files so it could easily be revived with the right person who knows how to run Linux

Vince - were you not a laughing stock and the butt of jokes there to ?

Why is it dead? Three words: CASA LANA DORA
What a vomitorium of gladhanding, backslapping, asskissing and groveling at the feet of their two demi-gods; teh Chad and Lana.
An absolute waste of human capacity and marginal utility.

McFarland was one reason it was so popular for a while, and Tom Prince fucking hated that, even tried to start a fight with him at Golds (by using the same gestures that Cormier used at him to try and start him, yes great memory). Massive G was just a fat fuck.

Actually, not the first 2 years I was there. I was well respected at the time and gave a lot of info on making anabolic steroids. I had one post in particular that gave folks information on how to get 2 pounds of nor-androstendione for free from this company in China. A lot of people loved that article.

Vince all you need are the mysql db backup, inject that in the forum software they were using and voila.
30 min job.
-
no he didn't, he made them an offer
I've made 4 different offers in the past 3 years including Chad's EFitStore and the remaining inventory of supplements. Chad had some lady to answer all of his calls and emails...don't think it was his wife.
Its possible that he did sell it and that its being reworked but who knows. Its pretty much worthless now that its been delisted by Google. He could have stock a Google Adsense ad at the top of the page in place of that Lana Dora ad and made about 400-500 bucks a month easily.

Ah sorry - my mistake :)

I know...as well as disable the upload function. That's what was costing Chad all that money. People uploaded pictures here and there and over time maintaining that bandwidth would have been ridiculous.

its still valuable, as soon as the domain points to some quality content google will crawl it all over again - but I agree if you offer them money you should give them less now.
Idiot that he is not selling it.

Yea, the backlinks never disapppear and the Alexa rank is decent even with it being delisted. But every day its down, the value goes with it and it makes it harder to get it back running

well sooner or later the backlinks will disappear as well ;)
Did he ever say why he wouldn't sell it? might be an idea to go with a middle man - if you believe he will not sell due to spite or a grudge he holds against you.

No, me and Chad have been pretty cool over the years. I referred a couple of people over to him back in the day. However, the lady who answered his emails and calls prob did. Who knows.

EXACTLY why it went down. It was once a great forum filled with some epic threads. The moderators thought it was better to censor everything with a personal agenda which lead to it's demise.

Correction, the moderators were instructed to censor certain things,no personal agendas,(on my part anyway)just doing what the higher ups wanted us to do.

That may be true but each moderator had their own agenda and censored their own stuff as well as what the Admin wanted and one even allowed a guy to openly sell steroids in the Chemical Warfare section.
Ultimately, you ended up with people either too afraid to post something for risk of banishment and just boring conversation. Massive G was the biggest jackasses of them all. He thought that as long as he posted a girl's titty every week that people would just overlook the censorship of the site. Just doesn't work these days
-
Others may have had agendas, but I tried to be objective and just mod the way they wanted me to.
I certainly can`t speak for the other mods, but I thought I did a good job and used as much diplomacy as I could.
Ya` know, some posters there were only there to be dickheads as well as some mods too, kind of a 50-50 type deal.

Mayhem always sucked as far as i'm concerned..

Mayhem always sucked as far as i'm concerned..
People who were at least somewhat serious about their own bodybuilding or about the sport had a place to 'be serious' at Mayhem. GetBig was *always* more entertaining, but although this place has been a great information source, Mayhem was more focused on the information element than on letting the guys have a little fun every now and again.
They did do a great job in giving McFarland a platform, though, and there were 100s and 100s of viewers who enjoyed his man-in-the-street event coverage. RxMuscle should've had Singerman do an apprenticeship under him.

People dont realize that it costs money to keep a website up. Oh, not one that has a few hundred people visiting, but one in which you upload pictures, downloads huge mega bandwidhs, and have a lot of visitors a day, which requires more than one processor (this site has 8 on one computer).
It also requires time, commitment, and a lot of hassles from many people.

That's true but that why I would have disabled the upload feature had I purchased Muscle Mayhem. That would have cut down on the bandwidth having people to image link instead. Better to use someone else's bandwidth and space than your own. With that out of the way, you would only need about half the processors which could easily be paid by ad sponsors.
BTW, I'm curious Ron as to how much it cost to run this site. The server I use for my websites runs about 150 dollars a month
-
EXACTLY why it went down. It was once a great forum filled with some epic threads. The moderators thought it was better to censor everything with a personal agenda which lead to it's demise.
I don't remember the one moderator's name (his avatar was Bubbles from 'Trailer Park Boys') who frequently censored my posts, but in a discussion on pro women's bodybuilding, I stated a position I've held for years - that the judges made mistakes in 1988 and again in 1996 that forever changed the landscape of the sport, and not necessarily for the better - and that post was deleted.
When I complained, one of the other mods argued that my post was disrespectful to Kim C (who won the Ms. O) that year, even though what I said had nothing to do with her and everything to do with the judges.
He then said that if I didn't like the censorship on Mayhem that I could go elsewhere. I said I would, and did. And looks like pretty much everyone else eventually got the same message, too.
I'm not one to wish failure upon anyone, but I do love being right, so yes, there's a bit of schadenfreude in this instance.
-

They had the volunteers. In bodybuilding/fitness, just as in most any other community, there's no shortage of people willing to be hall monitors, aka moderators.
With respect to cost, unless they just had a bad hosting deal - and let's be honest here, a lot of people who have generally successful sites aren't necessarily the sharpest tools in the shed - the bandwidth cost should not have been higher than $400-500/month. Mike's a smart guy, but that doesn't necessarily mean that Chad would've always listened to him.

haha i'll never forget the getbig/mayhem feud back in 2003
it was hilarious how the dumbest (or most interesting?) posters got a "blithering idiot" tag next to their name
a lot of getbiggers started there and then came to getbig after mayhem banned them
mcfarland, adonis, power rod, magoo, come to mind

Didn't a lot of the so called "females" sell their ass on that site. Wasn't there a schmoe squatting thread that blew the whistle on a lot of ho's over there?
