Title: Worst Gimmicks
Post by: littleguns on July 16, 2011, 01:47:17 PM
Who had the worst gimmick?

Yeah, Shockmaster is way up there on my list, along with Repo Man and Saba Simba.

My least favorite of all time, though, has to be Dusty Rhodes in the black and yellow polka dots with Sapphire.  I'm surprised he didn't just light VKM on fire when he found out that was going to be his gimmick.

I only watched the first video so forgive me if I'm redundant.  Some horrible gimmicks there.  I remember a couple more...Dumpster Drosie...and a one-shot called "Friar Ferguson"  oh, brother

Dusty has said a couple times the polka dots were his idea...but who knows?

Another "brilliant" idea from the same mind that produced the "Shockmaster," another "worst-of" thread highlight.
Once again, WHY THE FUKK IS RHODES CONSIDERED SOME KIND OF "LEGEND?"

The common man?
How fukkin common was it to leave your house and pass THIS on the street:

WHAT THE FUKK TERRITORY WAS HE IN THAT THEY GAVE HIM THAT MONIKER?

Rhodes was an incredibly versatile worker.
In a 9:36 second match, I counted:
2 bites,
2  kicks,
12 punches,
27 elbows,
Choking (I guess),
And ear pinching.

No wonder the Japanese fans loved him...shades of Karl Gotch.

What’s even worse is Rhodes actually wears an elbow pad…as if the dangling adipose isn’t enough to protect his humeral-condylar fragility.

The whole Kevin Sullivan thing where he was the master or something and had his followers going through the woods and caves all the time wearing their wrestling outfits.  I think thise who were in the spell were the Giant, Perry Saturn maybe...I don't know but it was so ridiculous it was funny.

Dammit, I’m melting down hard for the first time ever on this board, and I don’t give a shit!

Back to Rhodes...

He draped himself in black & yellow polka dots, and booked the “Shockmaster.”
Yep; sounds like one of the industry’s greatest minds to me.

Hogan inspired millions of kids to lift weights.
I would say that Rhodes inspired millions of kids to lift jelly doughnuts, but I doubt that’s true.
Growing up, I never saw a single kid dress up like Dusty.
Nobody was Dusty when we pretended to wrestle. Although, I now recognize the irony of pretending to engage in make-believe fighting as a child.

Dusty, you were a bum.
The only reason people liked you is that your pathetic lethargy, obesity, and tits were enough to make most guys feel better about themselves!

Dusty, the bottom line is that, even without the polka dots, YOU were the shittiest gimmick to ever plague professional wrestling…even when you stood in the same ring at the same time with this guy:

I can not remember his name, I'm pretty sure he was early wcw sometime in the late 80's. He was supposed to be from the future. He came back in time to save us or wrestling....does that ring anyone's bell?

Lasertron?

And putting Sting in this category is ridiculous.  The Crow gimmick was WAY over at the time, and I'm not a big Sting fan.

I would still vote for Red Rooster, but because it took a very solid in-ring talent and made him into a complete and utter joke who will always be remembered for it.

Kris Kanyon was a great talent though.

I remember that I quit on WCW (and missed out on the fingerpoke of doom, David Arquette, etc) when for about four weeks in a row the main event on Monday night was Glacier and Ernest "The Cat" Miller vs. Wrath and Mortis (managed by James Vandenberg).  Jeebus.

So Monty....tell us how you really feel about "The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes?  ;D

I really think his popularity had more to do with during that time period there was a clear face vs heel thing and if you followed territory wrestling during that time, they ALWAYS put Rhodes against the most over heels.  Whether it was Sullivan the devil worshipper in Florida, the Four Horsemen, etc...  I think it was more of a "he stands up to them" kinda thing.  I hated the fat slob, more as a mark than knowing anything about him.  And another not so small part of Rhodes "popularity" was he was often a major booker in the territories.

He & Sapphire were better than Savage & Liz, Heenan & Hennig, Hart & Hogan, Paul E. & LOD. Both HOF legends forever remembered as the greatest duo to grace the squared circle bar none.......

You probably already know this, but the Virgil character in WWF was meant as a dig at Rhodes (Virgil Runnels), who's product was running against Vince's at the time.

i love this  ;D ;D ;D

The only decent angle i remember with Dusty was when Dustin was attacked in the crowd by Dibiase & Virgil, leading onto their tag battle at that years RR (?), which somehow managed to work its way into the Hennig / KVE angle. If i remember correctly KVE saved Dustin from a beat down because they had slated Texans before assaulting Dustin, & Dibiase then arranged to be a special guest ring announcer (forgive me for any inaccuracies, i was 9 years old lol).

Dibiase ultimately costing KVE the IC title devestated me, "Did you hear that? And NEW in-ter-con-tin-en-tal champion, MR PERFECT AHAHAHAHAHAHA".

Yeah, but it worked out...especially after Kerry did not (as I-C champ).
I've given some thought to why KVE never really got over in the Fed, but could never come up with any kind of substantial conclusion.

However, starting with Hennig, we saw a string of incredible workers who restored prestige to the Intercontinental belt, and even elevated it beyond what it had ever seen.
Hennig, Bret, Shawn, Davey, etc... for quite a number of years, the best mat-workers in the company traded that belt.
Had Steamboat not pissed off the wrong people, I suspect he would have remained a strong player in that mix, as well.
Title: Re: Worst Gimmicks
Post by: GraniteCityDon on October 22, 2011, 07:26:13 AM
I dont think KVE was particularly strong on the mic, but he had a decent skill set in the ring and a look to die for. Vince had a habit of bringing in the best guys on offer in rival companies and relegating them to mid carders, i believe KVE was one such example. The fact he only had 1 foot was incredible but i too am at a loss as to why exactly he didnt become a top top face.

You guys discussing Rhodes, his time in the WWF was just plain awful.  He had some great feuds with Sullivan in Florida, Tully and Flair in the mid-atlantic, etc.... not to mention the old days with Murdoch.  To base anything about the guy on turd-ball Mcmahon's shitty gimmicks that he gave virtually every worker from other territories is unfair.

As for Kerry.  He was way over in Texas because of the way his dad pushed him.  Looked like a million bucks, avg at best in-ring and pure garbage on the mic.  I will say though that for much of his WWF run he only had half a foot, so I'm sure it had to limit him somewhat.    Man that family is a freakin' trainwreck and a half.....just wow....

In my mind, I kind of liken Adrian's "Adorable" gimmick to Matt Borne's Doink the Clown: both men were good workers who actually made a go out of an idea that was probably created by Vince solely for his own amusement.

The old man has been known to do that quite often to his talent.
It's "kinda" neat when it backfires on him; although, it just translates to more money for him in the end.

What VKM did with Adonis was pathetic.  If you ever saw him in Texas or Southwest Championship wrestling, he was awesome.  And his tagteam with Ventura in the AWA was pure gold.....I think they reteamed in the WWF for a time too, but can't remember that for sure.  The East-West Connection !!!

Vince took all these guys that were stars other places and gave them stupid gimmicks . I feel he did this intentionally trying to prove something.

Lets all not forget "The Stalker" Berry Windom Or The Repo Man also The Skinner , Steve Keirn is a good worker but i thought the gimmick was dumb .

As far as Goldust is concerned  he got over well with the crowed , he was a good heel or baby face.

I don't think they could have pushed him any harder.

Vince was so desperate for a "new Hulk Hogan."
But, to Lex's credit - that was a very tough time in pro-wreslting; particularly the WWF.
Hell, even Hogan couldn't cut it as the "new Hulkster," if you know what I mean.

The best Lex was the 4 Horseman version... That was the best run he ever had... Great US champ at the time too.

I agree that his NWA work was by far better than that disaster he ran in the Fed.
I was just always indifferent to Luger - at any time.

In what era in the Federation history do you think he could have been successful? I think this guy is the "Total Package" of loserness. Theres a few guys that Bret couldn't make look golden and this guy was one of them. All physique.

I think he could have worked somewhere on the card; just not at the very top like they tried to force him.
As Tu pointed out, Lex faired well in Georgia.
I think the biggest reason he "failed" in WWF was they tried to make him something he wasn't suited to be.

This was at a time when Vince was desperately trying to "manufacture" a new champion to take Hogan's spot.
In looking for a new face to carry the company, the old man tried a number of guys in the driver's seat: Diesel, Sid, Luger...all failed.
Even Shawn couldn't cut it. He had an extremely devoted, but extremely small fanbase.
The WWF's bleakest financial years were during Shawn's reign as champ - that's directly from Dave Meltzer's newsletter.

Bret was probably about the best option they had at the time.
And, unlike the Luger's & Sid's, Bret earned the spot by proving himself with hard work and excellent performances.

Lex belonged, just not in that spot.
