RIYADH: Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal yesterday unveiled plans to build the world's tallest tower in Jeddah, signing a 4.6 billion riyal (BD463 million, $1.23bn) contract with Bin Laden Group. The proposed tower, which will rise more than 1,000 metres and take just over five years to complete, is the centrepiece of the planned Kingdom City development being built outside Jeddah by Prince Alwaleed's Kingdom Holding.
When completed, it would replace Dubai's 828-metre Burj Khalifa as the tallest tower in the world.
The Jeddah tower, which is to include a hotel, serviced apartments, luxury condominiums and offices, will be designed by US architecture firm Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill.

I am impressed with those tall towers. Has anyone here been to see the Burj Khalifa? Sydney's tallest tower is about 300m high so it is hard to imagine a tower more than 3 times that height.

Shrewd. The Burj Khalifa vacancy rate remains, what, 75%, and these clowns want to build another vanity tower, in a continuing recession!? More money than brains. ::)

Imagine how easy it will be for Americanos to spread sum' democracy to that tower when oil gets tight :D

I've seen Burj Khalifa upclose - never been up though!
It looks really incredible when you're flying in and you can see how it dwarfs all the other buildings and pierces through the clouds!
I worked with a company who supplied a number of the AC products for that tower, so they took us on a tour of the towers machine room! Never went up though!

disgusting Western decadence

The 'Freedom Tower' is starting to get up there.... if you guys haven't been to NYC, the next time you go you'll see its progress.

My specwriter wrote the entire Khalifa specification for doors and hardware. SEVEN years, it took him. What a colossal failure that thing is so far.

Build enough money losing buildings and you won't be a billionaire any longer.

Do you have any pictures from that trip? I am always pretty fascinated by that area, the people and buildings and such.

Yeah not very good ones though... but here, 2 of Burj Khalifa (From far away - it wasn't complete yet and was still towering over all the other buildings as you can see)...
and 2 of Burj Al Arab!

These tall buildings being built by Arab countries are meant as a dig to America, with the loss of WTC. They've even got the Bin Laden organization producing this one. Funny fucking world, it is. ::)

Not a dig at the US - many of those buildings were being planned long before the attack on the Twin Towers!
Also, Do no confuse the Bin Laden Corporation wtih Osama - The Bin Laden Family (who run the corporation), one of the wealthiest families in the middle east, has long disowned their crazy ass son, and cut off all ties with him. I gaurantee you, they would've given him that bullet to his head if they could've found him before the US did! They are completely ashamed of what he has done and now their family name is tainted because he climbed to the #1 most wanted list. They run an honest business and they are very good at it!

well chimps, you can't win. if Africans annex their land and the oil, then they would just use it to set each other on fire over potatoes. even with wildlife, oil, diamonds, the whole region still can't buy its' way out of a 3rd world "shit for brains" and tribal mentally.

Listen to some of you guys. Whoever has the tallest building gets prestige for their city and country. That has always been so. Who would remember the Empire State Building if this wasn't true? I would love to photograph this building. Do some big panoramas to get heaps more detail.

The problem is that these days, news gets old very fast.
When the Empire State Building was built, they had a bit more time to bask in its glory.
Now, you can find massively tall buildings almost anywhere.

And you would say this if this tower were to be build in the US, you dirty capitalist? :D :D :D
But you are right. It's all about the ongoing competition of east and the west on who has the biggest phallic symbol (towers or bombs).

Nice going. Now you Arabs can feel really proud: a building built mostly by European and American engineers, payed for with money you made selling them oil(something you did nothing to earn) but you can claim it for yourselves since it will be build in an Arab country.

Because a person could feel proudness of the phallic symbol if it were built and designed by Arabs even though that person had nothing to do with the said phallic symbol. Just shows how simple you are. ::)

Skyscrapers and bridges are pretty fascinating when you think about it. I know with these new monsters they have to take into account temperature and pressure differences at the various heights of the building, especially for the men who are doing the work.
I worked as a project manager for a construction company rebuilding NYC subways for over a year and the underground stuff was pretty neat, but I was always fascinated by bridges and skyscrapers.
-
Wow, that building sure is tall....
5 seconds later....
What's on TV tonight?

what else are they supposed to do with the money? invest it in "homeless shelters"? please. currencies around the world (the arab being the US Dollar ) are losing value by the second. instead of sitting on piles, they want to at least have something to show for their money once they're dead and the oil dries up (if ever). of course these buildings are purely made for vanity, you could make that case for any building in the western world. we could all live in dirt huts, but as a society we've decided to show off our capabilities through bank account balances and house/building sizes.
more power to them, it doesn't affect me in any way. not like they're building a huge missile silo pointed towards Chicago.

The world’s tallest residential building, Central Park Tower, tops out at 1,550 feet
Central Park Tower officially topped out on Tuesday, breaking the record set by nearby 432 Park Avenue for the tallest residential building in the world. Reaching 1,550 feet high, the skyscraper at 217 West 57th Street would be the tallest building in New York City if not for the 400-foot spire of One World Trade, as New York Magazine reported. Developed by supertall-specialists Extell, Central Park Tower includes a seven-story Nordstrom flagship store and 179 luxury condos.
Some of the residences were listed for the first time in May, ranging from a $6.9 million two-bedroom to a five-bedroom apartment for $63 million. In 2017, it was reported that 20 of the 179 units will ask for $60 million and above, including a penthouse for $95 million. Closings are expected to begin in the first quarter of next year.
Developers predict the building will have a sellout of more than $4 billion, which would make Central Park Tower the country’s most expensive condo project ever.
But the market has slowed for luxury towers, specifically those located on Billionaires’ Row. Jonathan Miller, a real estate appraiser, told the New York Times that 40 percent of seven towers in the Central Park South area are unsold. While sales data for Central Park Tower has not yet been released, the Commercial Observer reported last month that Extell’s other supertall on the Lower East Side, One Manhattan Square, has seen just 173 of 815 condos closed.
According to a press release from Extell, “Central Park Tower’s beautiful facade features combined elements of glass, satin-finished stainless steel, and light-catching vertical and horizontal details that accentuate the interplay of texture and light. At a height of 300 feet from the street, the tower cantilevers to the east, creating Central Park views for all north-facing residences.”
The 131-story tower was designed by Chicago-based Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture and includes three full floors of amenity space, dubbed the Central Park Club. The club spans 50,000 square feet and features an outdoor terrace with a pool, a wellness center with an indoor pool, and a massive ballroom and cigar bar on the marketed 100th floor.
Smith designed Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the current tallest building in world, and the Jeddah Tower, the soon-to-be tallest, a 3,280-foot tower in Saudi Arabia. In an interview published Monday, New York Magazine architecture critic Justin Davidson asked the architect if Central Park Tower could have been taller if local zoning had allowed it.
“Oh yeah,” Smith said. “Jeddah Tower is twice the height of this one. You could drop that in here for sure.”

Did you know that the Burj Khalifa is not connected to a sewage system? There isn't one to connect to. It has to be hauled away in tanker trucks...
Furthermore...Most of the buildings you see around it in that district do the same...There are no sewers there.
