That back exercise machine, why do gyms favor lat pull down machine instead of those, I like those better
-
Thanks for posting the pics. Sergio vs Arnold in the 1970 Mr World was the first time I saw a real bodybuilder.
I was 12 and the contest was shown live on ABC's Wide World of Sports on saturday in prime time.
I wanted to be a bodybuilder ever since.

Sergios forearm muscle starts at the elbow and goes down almost to his wrist. Crazy!!

It is the original Nautilus PullOVER * and I actually got to use one just like that at the Naut training center in Deland FL 30 yrs ago.
Dorian Yates has a similar model for his lats at his gym in England.
It is like a pec dec for your lats. Unreal back pump!

Both awesome bodybuilders! Their physiques are so different from one another.

Why doesn't every gym have this? Less people would be walking around with strained shoulder muscles and bigger backs if gyms had this instad of wide grip cable pull downs everywhere
-
Howard, that is an original Nautilus Pullover.
I have owned two of those, the first I retrofitted with needle bearings (took out the brass bushings) and it was smooth as glass. Someone offered me a load of money for that machine, and I sort of needed some funds at the time, but I stumbled upon another one in great shape, and now own that.
-

Sergio had a brother? ???
Any pics of what he looked like?
-
i saw sergio in person at the 84 o. he was still awesome even then.

Bingo! Thanks and I just went back and made my post correct thanks to your reminder *

The first time I met him was I believe at the 2004 Arnold Classic. He seemed pretty frail.
In fact, I had brought with me the February 1968 issue of Ironman with him on the cover to sign. When I presented it to him he was very surprised and asked where I got it. I told him eBay. ;D
-
never seen the second one, a good pic!

Nope , but they were both apparently athletes in Cuba

Olivia ALWAYS blows my mind. Not only with his physique either. But with the kind of life he lived. And, goddamn, was his diet legendary ! LOLOLOL !!! In my mind, GREATEST bb'er of all-time.
-
Sergio's condition guest posing at the 1971 Mr. Olympia was sick! More so, I think, than at the 1972 Mr. Olympia. Too bad he couldn't compete against Arnold. That would've been a sight to behold!
-

Yeah. In one of my Musclemag International magazines Sergio was saying how he'd eat pizza, black beans & rice and down them with Coke. All the way up to a show! :o
-
Insane arm size! :o
-
Much fuller than Arnie ever was, better condition as well. Too bad he was black or he would have been the posterboy for Weider and Co.
-
This pic blows my mind. Just look at the thickness from his forearms, biceps, triceps, chest and lats coming down to that tiny waist. Plus, he's not even hitting the pose yet. Sergio's victory pose will probably go down as the only pose to never be matched in my opinion.
-
I never knew how he tore his triceps, someone have details about it ?

Epic Dball fullness
Epic going bald in his 20s due to massive dosages of oral roids as well LOL made me laugh in an old interview i read with him, he said he took dbol, deca and winstrol but didnt like taking anything as he knew it couldnt be good for him, and he never touched a roid until he entered the Mr O ::)

lol, what can you do, its part of the "game", there was another interview where he only took minimal amounts of deca, cause its good for the joints, but wasnt really comfortable doing it, only took a few times
on another note, where was he shot? right arm and stomach?

I've never seen anybody use those right. They pull with their hands instead of drive with their elbows. When I would use that machine I wouldn't even bother holding on to the front part of the bar. I would just make sure my arms were kept bent at around 90 degrees or so, my chest held up, stretch all the way back so that my elbows were way behind my head and just drive back with my elbows. Nothing isolated the lats like that machine. My cheap ass gym doesn't even have that. They don't have a pec deck either.

Do you believe it to be the "upper-body squat" like AJ claimed it was?
-
Best bodybuilder of all time. Better than Arnold in my opinion.
-
Sergio was head and shoulders above anyone today!
-
Taking a bit of a pounding in this 1974 mexican film :D
-
Do you believe it to be the "upper-body squat" like AJ claimed it was?
I personally do not, however, my lats/rhomboids/traps grew tremendously at an early age from proper use of this machine. I had access to one of these in high school, and that is what began my journey with Nautilus equipment. For a couple of years I went to a more "hardcore" routine of barbells/dumbells (almost exclusively), and it was to my detriment.
-
AMAZING!!!!!!..makes Arnold look like a little boy
-
Sergio had the best genetics of all time except for maybe Paul Dillet!

I got both Spanish films that Sergio did, and his size in them is insane!

I read an interview of him awhile back. He said at his best he weighed 254 at 5'10". Weider mags always had him at 220 but out of his mouth it was 254.
I heard his health is giving him trouble. I hope it's not true but the most recent pictures don't look good. Father time will get us all. He is not a young man anymore. Considering he nearly died after being shot point blank back in the day it's amazing he came back from that. Another rumor is that he also got shot in the arm in Cuba as a young man too. He has the scar in many pictures.

According to a fella on Ironage that knows Sergio and other oldtime Chicago lifters, Sergio was recently stuck up for his famous watch, gold chain, etc.... and it was a tremendous blow to his psyche. He won't make public apperances anymore because he doesn't want his fans to remember him in an aging and weakened state.
Shame to hear that.
-
Do you believe it to be the "upper-body squat" like AJ claimed it was?
Nah, Jones was prone to hyperbole. Take the pullover to ball busting failure and take squats to ball busting failure. Not even close. You can be in great shape and condition just doing squats. Doesn't mean you'll look like a bodybuilder but if you are banging out ass to heels squats for 20 reps and not pausing at the top with even just 185 lbs you are going to be heads and tails about the average masses as far as conditioning. If you just did Nat Pullovers you may have developed lats in comparison to the rest of your body but you are not really going to be in that great athletic condition.

I would think he was a Legit 5ft 10 in the YEAR 1971, you got to remember EVERYONE due to ageing process (and the natural curvature of the spine with age) loses a inch or 2 especially over 55yrs old or more pretty normal take a Look @ Arnold now in 2011 guaranteed hes @ least a couple inchs shorter than he was in 1971.
-

I met him in 87...so in his 40's...and I'm 5'11" and i was easliy two inches taller...I was looking down at the guy
-
Why don't we see guys like that on bodybuilding scene anymore? Troy Alves is prolly last guy that aspires to that look. And please don't tell me Branch Warren or someone else is "better". Yer, by bodybuilding standards he is but tell my fucking WHY after all those modern pro bodybuilders I've seen it's only physiques like this which make me think "WOW!"?

plenty of people try, the problem is he people walking around with mr o trophies are ronnie jay and warren, the judges see themselves as people with power, people at the top of this heirarchy called bodybuilding and first and foremost what they want is people to submit to them, so they will reward people who risked their lives and sacrficed and don;t even look human anymore, because this gets them off, this is what gets off people with a hunger for power. Dex got one for the same reason, he showed up every time in tip top shape and smiled like a good boy for them so they threw him a bone, he should have more trophies than you can count on one hand, but he is his own man and looks beautiful instead of freaky. Kevin and Shawn were also their own man, but they couldn't be denied so they were in the spot light as well, but dorian risked the most, he injected the most insulin, he got down the lowest body fat, he looked the most like an animal so they gave it to him. He sacrificed the most. In football it doesn't matter if you talk shit, just score tds, in bodybuilding you gotta submit to the will of weider

Unfuckingbelievable. Thats what an upper body should look like right there, crazy density and herculean look.

This is in my honest opinion look you just cannot achieve by injecting shit and eating right in few years. THis is a look that actually requires proper structure, dedication and years of training. He's DENSE. You don't see that look at the Olympia stage anymore except from few guys really. But you can meet guys like that in gyms all over the world. Not willing to compete, huge cartoon like freaks with dense muscle training for 15 years just on roids with limited budgets.

Couldnt of said it better. Thats a body built from real hard work heavy weights and diet. Dense and conditioned, thats the kind of muscle that makes you do a double take and say "wtf!" Thats what I call truly huge.

Have been claims that he was really 5'9".
-
I'm 5'7'' and when I met him back in 2004 he seemed to be 5'8'' TOPS!
Right and in 2004 he was an OLD MAN (in his 60's), so that would put at about 5'9" in his PRIME. Look at Arnold serious height loss since 2003. The man is struggling with 5'10" today and was 6'1.5"-6'2" during his prime.
-
I met him in 87...so in his 40's...and I'm 5'11" and i was easliy two inches taller...I was looking down at the guy
You don't look down at someone being only 2" taller than them. That's just you acting like you're bigger and better than him. It's a psychological game your mind plays to make you feel superior because you really feel insecure.
-
Sorry, im a big Sergio fan but hes not in the same league as Arnold as an overall physique. Sure he looks freakier in a lot of those pics standing himself, but next to Arnold , who is a fair bit taller, he doesn't seem as 'massive'. Add in that Arnold was always more conditioned, and you have the better overall BB of the 2.
-

The Nautilus Pullover was the first Nautilus machine developed by Arthur Jones. He wanted fully isolate the lats because he felt the biceps, forearms/grip were the weak links in traditional pulling movements done for lats/back. The lats are such a large muscle group compare to the biceps so the biceps would fail first before make deep inroads into the lats. If you remember, the original pullover was coupled with a pull down so you could do pre exhaust with the pullover and go immediately to the pull down.
It fell out of favor because most people simply did it wrong. They would pull with their hands rather than drive with their elbows defeating the purpose of the machine. I use to dispense even touching the bar with my hands and just position my elbows on the pad and just keep my arms bent at a 90 degree angle and just drive with my elbows. This movement mimicked the front under grip pull down except full range of motion, your elbows would stretch back to behind your ears and go down all the way to your waist. No arms. Just pure lats.
He also developed another brilliant piece that mimicked the traditional front wide grip pull down except, again, the resistance was on the elbows/upper arms (by passing the biceps) and again a full range of motion. Twice the range than the traditional pulldown as your bicep would press against your ears and go down to your waist.
Again, it fell out of favor as most had to taught how to use it correctly therefore most used it wrong.
Jones was a genius.

Same with me when i was 4yrs old seeing lee haney and rich gaspari on tv. Probably mr. Olympia when they still televised it on regular tv since we only had the old school tv with a dial, no remote. Lol
-
what is the real story of him getting shot as a cop?
Don't know all the facts but I will repeat what I heard. He was having a fight with his wife. She got his service revolver. It was a .357 magnum loaded with .38 special 158 grain plus P lead hollow points. She shot him in the stomach at point blank range. How he recovered from that is beyond me.
The other time was when he was in the Army in Cuba. A guy shot him in the arm.

what is the real story of him getting shot as a cop?
His wife got tired of getting her ass kicked by him , she took his gun and shot him.

Ex-mr. Universe Turned Cop Shot In Quarrel With His Wife
July 25, 1986|By Philip Wattley and Edward Baumann.
Rogers Park District Patrol Officer Sergio Oliva, 45, an internationally recognized body-builder and former Mr. Universe, was in serious condition after being shot during an argument with his wife in their North Side home Thursday.
Investigators said preliminary reports indicated the shooting occurred after Oliva struck his wife twice. In a statement before undergoing surgery in St. Francis Hospital, Evanston, for a wound in the lower right abdomen, Oliva reportedly said the gun went off accidentally while he and his wife struggled in the bedroom.
Mrs. Oliva initially told investigators that she ran to the bedroom after Oliva struck her to get a .38 caliber revolver and that she shot him after he followed and struck her a second time. Mrs. Oliva is a body builder and operates a body-building clinic with her husband. Oliva was off duty at the time.
According to initial the reports, his wife helped Oliva down the stairs from their third-floor apartment after the shooting, and they waited in the street for an ambulance, which neighbors had called.
Oliva has won every professional body-building title in the world. Because of his 23-inch biceps he was known as the ``strong arm of the law.``
He defected from Cuba in 1962, taking with him all 32 members of Cuba`s weight-lifting team at the Pan American Games in Kingston, Jamaica.
He came to Chicago two years later and studied English at Wells High School to qualify for citizenship.
Oliva worked as a foundry worker and meatpacker for several years before being hired as a YMCA physical education instructor. He became interested in police work while employed as a civilian physical education instructor at the Chicago Police Academy.
Because of his dimensions--a 60-inch chest, 27-inch waist and 32-inch thighs--his police uniforms must be specially made.
The titles he has won include Mr. World at Montreal in 1966; Mr. Universe at Munich in 1967, 1968 and 1969; Mr. America in 1970; and Mr. Europe in 1981. He defeated Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1968 and 1969 in body-building competitions, and he won the World Cup seven times, three times in a row.
He also appeared in three movies produced in Mexico.

We have the same model yates uses in our gym, for me soon as you add weight it causes pain in the shoulders, whether you use your hands or not. I have good back development and feel my lats burst in all my other movements too

How he recovered from that is beyond me.
He said in an interview that he had so much muscle that it stopped the bullet from penetrating his major organs. It also made retrieving the bullet a bitch for the surgeons.

I read somewhere that even to today, the incident is still referred to in Chicago medical folk lore. Can't remember where.

It’s amazing how huge Sergio looks when on his own
Yet in that pic with an untrained overweight photographer
He doesn’t look large at all.
Great Bone Structure & Muscle Bellies - Tiny waist.
One of The Very Best Ever.

Of course one of the best ever. No argument there.
As Sergio not dwarfing the photographer. Probablly just the angle.
-
Nothing to do with the angle - He’s Just not Structurally physically big.
A True Body Builder - Small bone structure & joints, Big Full Muscle Bellies
Giving him the illusion of huge size.
That isn’t to say he wasn’t muscularly Big.

I get what you trying to say. A contrast to bone structure to let say Arnold. Still i call on angle making dude next to him bigger than in reality. He is closer to the camera thing ;D

Arnold’s bone structure is /was very light - Look At His Wrists / Knees / ankles
Only his hips were a bit boxy - Again Arnold looked a Lot Bigger Than He was
Because of Muscle Fulness & shape on a Light Skeletal structure.

Arnold's posing, vacuum make his waist a non issue.
Don't know whose skeleton is bigger.
Forgot that Arnold and Sergio have similar bone tickness therefore similar body type.
Would persume both would be more mesomorph.

Here is an edit I did of a Sergio photo. Sergio had probably the most impressive physique ever. Photo taken by Inge Cook, Arthur Jones' wife.
-
Here is a composition I did using a photo of Sergio with a photo of One Mile Beach at Forster that I took. I added the drop shadow which was time consuming.
Wayne Gallasch took the photo of Sergio. I contacted him online and asked if he had the negative. No, he said Wayne Bennett's wife had the negatives and doesn't reply to his emails.
In my opinion the physique in this photo is probably the best ever developed by anyone. Great size but also superb shape and proportions.
