Feb. 8, 2010 -- Drinking as little as two soft drinks a week appears to nearly double the risk of getting pancreatic cancer, according to a new study.
''People who drank two or more soft drinks a week had an 87% increased risk -- or nearly twice the risk -- of pancreatic cancer compared to individuals consuming no soft drinks," says study lead author Noel T. Mueller, MPH, a research associate at the Cancer Control Program at Georgetown University Medical Center, Washington, D.C. The study is published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.
The beverage industry took strong exception to the study, calling it flawed and pointing to other research that has found no association between soda consumption and pancreatic cancer.
Cancer of the pancreas was diagnosed in about 42,000 people in the U.S. in 2009, according to American Cancer Society estimates, and about 35,240 deaths from the disease were expected. The pancreas lies behind the stomach. It makes hormones such as insulin to balance sugar in the blood and produces juices with enzymes to help break down fats and protein in foods.

lol @ you being on a "vegan diet" @ 290 pounds.

"Why the link with sugary sodas? Mueller says they are not certain. "What we believe is the sugar in the soft drinks is increasing the insulin level in the body, which we think contributes to pancreatic cancer cell growth. That increase in insulin is what may be leading to the development of the cancer."
wouldn't be surprised if this shows to be true

no the sugar is the most natural thing to consume when we do activity our blood sugar levels drop and need to be replaced by MORE sugars Not a drug like signaling to the pancreas we get from caffiene

I've heard that insulin aids angiogenesis in general. Never heard it's associated with cancer in the same organ that produces insulin tho.

if the pancreas dont get enough sugars you get inflamation of the nth degree wich is akin the cancer
you constantly plug your body with false stimulants like caffiene its gonna bite you in the behined boy

There is no way to say, where you get the cancer. There is billions of things which rise the probability of getting it, and human science has found few thousands. You can get it from ozone which is in the air, grilled meat, smoked fish, baked bread. If you eat or drink anything, there is the risk to get cancer from it. If you be vegetarian and grow your own food, you get it from the soil where you grow your plants. You can hide from it and it is fucking hard to even lower the probability of getting it. And the funny part is that you probably have it already, but you notice it ten or fifteen years from this day. How you can watch out for stepping the mine which blows up twenty years later? You can stop eating, drinking and breathing, and that is only way to do it. If you avoid the diet sodas, look your water, which has more carcinogens than in the soda. You have smoked weed? Weed which has been fertilized with DDT by some crooks, and how far exactly your home is from the nuclear test site? You use drugs, you try to kill yourself by eating yeast, without knowing how dangerous it can be, and you are worried about diet sodas?

Oh brother ::)
-
No, I am not entitled to my own Opinion when there is overwhelming Evidence and a Scientific Consensus that Aspartame is 100 Percent Safe with no links to any ill effects whatsoever.
http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Risk/artificial-sweeteners
Subsequently, NCI examined human data from the NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study of over half a million retirees. Increasing consumption of aspartame-containing beverages was not associated with the development of lymphoma, leukemia, or brain cancer (2).
-
I go with the Science and Evidence. Opinions are useless in the face of overwhelming Evidence. Another authority on Cancer:
http://www.cancer.org/Cancer/CancerCauses/OtherCarcinogens/AtHome/aspartame
In the largest study of this issue, researchers from the NCI looked at cancer rates in more than 500,000 older adults. The study found that, compared to people who did not drink aspartame-containing beverages, those who did drink them did not have an increased risk of lymphomas, leukemias, or brain tumors.
What expert agencies say
Expert agencies in the United States and elsewhere that have evaluated aspartame have found it safe for use.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates the use of aspartame and other artificial sweeteners in the United States. In 2007, the FDA stated:
Considering results from the large number of studies on aspartame's safety, including five previously conducted negative chronic carcinogenicity studies, a recently reported large epidemiology study with negative associations between the use of aspartame and the occurrence of tumors, and negative findings from a series of three transgenic mouse assays, FDA finds no reason to alter its previous conclusion that aspartame is safe as a general purpose sweetener in food.
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) assesses the safety of sweeteners such as aspartame in the European Union. According to a 2009 report from its Panel on Food Additives and Nutrient Sources Added to Food:
Overall, the Panel concluded, on the basis of all the evidence currently available… that there is no indication of any genotoxic or carcinogenic potential of aspartame and that there is no reason to revise the previously established ADI for aspartame of 40 mg/kg [body weight].
Though research into a possible link between aspartame and cancer continues, these agencies agree that studies done so far have not found such a link.

Abstract
Over 20 years have elapsed since aspartame was approved by regulatory agencies as a sweetener and flavor enhancer. The safety of aspartame and its metabolic constituents was established through extensive toxicology studies in laboratory animals, using much greater doses than people could possibly consume. Its safety was further confirmed through studies in several human subpopulations, including healthy infants, children, adolescents, and adults; obese individuals; diabetics; lactating women; and individuals heterozygous (PKUH) for the genetic disease phenylketonuria (PKU) who have a decreased ability to metabolize the essential amino acid, phenylalanine. Several scientific issues continued to be raised after approval, largely as a concern for theoretical toxicity from its metabolic components--the amino acids, aspartate and phenylalanine, and methanol--even though dietary exposure to these components is much greater than from aspartame. Nonetheless, additional research, including evaluations of possible associations between aspartame and headaches, seizures, behavior, cognition, and mood as well as allergic-type reactions and use by potentially sensitive subpopulations, has continued after approval. These findings are reviewed here. The safety testing of aspartame has gone well beyond that required to evaluate the safety of a food additive. When all the research on aspartame, including evaluations in both the premarketing and postmarketing periods, is examined as a whole, it is clear that aspartame is safe, and there are no unresolved questions regarding its safety under conditions of intended use.

No because the Study, methodology are Peer-Reviewed and it follows the Scientific Method.
The link Free-Spirit provided was just selling some wacky diet.
Furthermore, the other links I provided from the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society should be more than sufficient. Coupled with the fact that all of the European Agencies as well have come to the same conclusion that Aspartame is completely harmless.
What more do you want? It does not look good in your favor when there is no evidence to support your conclusion. How would you even arrive at a conclusion without Evidence or Fact? Faith?

The drugs that came out a few years ago are the same ones that are causing birth defects and other maladies today. The TV is filled with commercials with lawyers suing pharmaceutical companies. This is my choice not to put total 100% faith in what the FDA approves. Fact is they have been fatally wrong before.

You cannot prove any of what you said. You can ramble about corrupt scientists, government lies and anything you want but bottom line is you cannot provide us with ANY __SCIENTIFIC__ evidence aspartame is unsafe. Everyone can make up any bullshit theory and post it on their site or even make documentary about it but bottom line is:
IF there were any natural treatment for cancer for which works then somewhere there in the world some scientist would research it and prove it works. If aspartame were cancerous then someone would prove it to be so. You have obviously no idea about scientific world and how many universities there are in this world. Do you even have degree or are in the process of obtaining it?
-
Don't complain if you get cancer though. It's your choice.
I'll rest my case. :)

What happens when you die and is it a reduced sate compared to living?
Could death itself be like graduating?

The sodas and serious adverse health effects is just a fact of life. Just as well researched and established that eating flesh increases various cancer risks.
"Phosphoric acid, used in many soft drinks (primarily cola), has been linked to lower bone density in epidemiological studies"
"Cola consumption has also been associated with chronic kidney disease and kidney stones through medical research.[6] The preliminary results suggest that cola consumption may increase the risk of chronic kidney disease.

Unless a study is 100% controlled, it means nothing.
They did the same shit with coffee and eggs ... all kinds of things that they have since changed their minds about.
If a study like this has the potential to hurt the industry, you can be assured that there will be hundreds of new studies coming out to refute (they just won't be controlled)
It's all about this: How long am I going to live? How am I going to die?
One thing for sure: We are all getting older every day, and will all die one day. It's about that simple. Question is: Are you at peace with this fact? Or, better yet, are you at peace with your maker?
I can already see the Atheists coming. They are dressed like Saints too....

40g of sugar in one standard size can? Hardly anything at all? Half a cup of sugar is hardly anything at all? And who drink only one can of coke per day? 5 cans equals 200 grams of sugar. In fact it is quite a lot. If you are on diet with 2400 calories per day, you can drink third of your daily calories just by drinking 5 cans of coke per day, with zero protein, zero anything at all, but sugar. Measure that amout of sugar in the scale, and eat it. Let see how fun that is .
