Title: how to train quads in a gym without squat rack or other machine?
Post by: noeasywayout on September 01, 2011, 08:37:33 AM
I  workout in my college gym, and the gym is the shittest gym I've ever known... >:(

the leg press/hack squat machine broke last month maybe due to heavy load (I loaded only 840lbs... WTF ::) ::))

and there's no quads machine or squat rack, we only got one  smith machine  and everyone wants to use it to train
chest....

so I train quads with

1. two 130lb dumbbells squat (the heavist in my gym) ::)
2.some barbell hack squat  :-X

any advice? thanks...

Having been in a similar situation, I got the most out of Split Squats and Step Ups, you could also C/J it, and front squat it for reps.

Or if you adventurious, you could Steinborn it, and do high rep squats, that's what they did before racks-

.

snatch grip deadlifts or wide grip deadlifts they force you to squat down a lot lower you could even elevate your heels if you have a trap bar that would be a great movement also. goblet squats with one or two dumbells and vince gironda sissy squats. step ups would prolly be another good one if the celling is high enough

I think the record in the Steinborn lift is Mid 400's, or even #500 or so.

if you've got a good pair of heels, you could try the old fashioned leg press ;) :P-

That's Wilber Miller a World class deadlifter from the 60's doing #505 for reps.

And Here's Ed Zercher, of Zercher Squat fame-

Things were tougher back then:).

Yes it does, especially trap bar deads.

Depends on the biomechanics of the lifter and still its not even close to any form of squats in terms of quad hypertrophy. Especially hip dominant lifters have very little quad involvement in a deadlift, so stating "dl is all you need" is retarded.

You have access to two 130lbs dumbbells?  Use wrist straps and squat with your back straight. Don't turn it into a deadlift. Hold the dumbbells at your sides. Squat until the dumbbells are within a half inch of the ground keeping your back upright.  This should be a nice deep squat. Concentrate on bending your legs.  Remember don't deadlift the weight.   If you can do sets of 12 like I described your in incredible shape.

Most will cheat this lift by turning it into a deadlift or doing shallow squats.  If you do it the way I described only someone with incredible strong legs could do 4 or 5 sets of 12 like I described.

Lunges.  They are a great way to build balance and real world strength.  Using dumbells instead of a barbell for this excersize is safer and easier on your back, IMO.

real world strength.

What is this exactly?

Strength gains that apply to tasks/situations you encounter in the real world, not the gym.  For example, carrying trash cans to the curb, helping a friend move, playing sports, removing heavy objects from high shelves, etc.  Or in your case, supporting the weight of the barnyard animal currently mounting you.

And a regular freeweight barbell squat or C/J won't? This arguement has been around for years, and smells only slightly better than Crossfit horseshit. Just get strong, it will transfer over more than enough for all of life's changes.

Haha, ok "cashfan".

Where did I say a basic squat wouldn't?  His gym doesnt have a squat rack, but does have heavy dumbells.  I said a lunge with dumbells instead of a barbell was safer and easier on your back.   You argue like a woman, all tangents and hasty conclusions, quit it.

@Hulk- You disagree with my opinion about lunges but make no attempt to deny fucking farm animals, interesting.

Lunges.  They are a great way to build balance and real world strength.

You began your post with that, Hulkotron asks-

What is this exactly?

Then you post-

Strength gains that apply to tasks/situations you encounter in the real world, not the gym.  For example, carrying trash cans to the curb, helping a friend move, playing sports, removing heavy objects from high shelves, etc.  Or in your case, supporting the weight of the barnyard animal currently mounting you.

Like lunges are some magic exercise that will build "real world strength"  ::) better than anything else proposed, when it's just another exercise more or less.
